Overview
The Realms of Creation[1][2] (also called the lands of Creation,[3] the universe,[4] or the mortal world[5] by the Source Dragons) are a variety of worlds located within the Ethereal Divide. It's heavily implied that the realms have been altered many times in the history of the universe creating a cyclic model.[6] Inter-realm travel was once only able to be accomplished using the Realm Crystal, an artifact that was created by the First Spinjitzu Master and located in his tomb; along with various other methods of transportation. The Realm of Oni and Dragons was the first of all the realms in existence and the First Spinjitzu Master created four of the realms,[7][8][9] one of which is Imperium.[10]
Before the Merge, there were Sixteen Realms parallel to Ninjago in the Ethereal Divide, so seventeen realms in total,[8][11] though following the destruction of the Cursed Realm and consequently Djinjago, there were seemingly only fifteen realms left. In truth, the essence of the realms cannot be truly destroyed, as the Preeminent existed within the Departed Realm[12] and a fragment of Djinjago remains with the power to be restored by the magic of the djinns.[13] With the Merge reforming both the Cursed Realm and the Departed Realm into the Spectral Lands, there are now only sixteen former realms in the Ethereal Divide.
Following the Merge, the realms were merged into one, and are now known as the Merged Realms, the Merged Lands or the Merged World.[14] As a result, some of the realms were given new names as they were no longer classified as realms, but rather as kingdoms or landmarks. Some of the displaced people created a home called the Crossroads, located where the epicenter of the Merge took place.

Locations of the lands and travel after the Merge
Locations of the lands and travel after the Merge[]
Following the Merge, travelling between different lands has become easier. However, without the use of portal gates, the different methods of reaching lands vary: From Ninjago, only Imperium can be accessed by overland travel,[29] due to it being the only realm to border the island. Travelling from Ninjago to the Wyldness (specifically the Lava Wastes) requires passing by the Greenbone Warriors' forest.[30] The red-water ocean and the Algae farmers' village is located in-between Ninjago and the Mother Garden and between the First Land and the Land of Lee.[18][31]
The Land of Monsters appears to be isolated on its own island similar to the World Forest,[32] as Kai needed to use the Bounty to travel back to Ninjago.
The Land of Madness, the First Land, the Spectral Lands, Mysterium and the Underworld all seem to be in close proximity or even bordering each other. The Spectral Lands border the south of the First Land, specifically near the South Woods and not too far from Storm Mountain, which is located near the wastelands. Furthermore, travelling from the Administration to the Spectral Lands requires passing by the First Land's entrance.[28] Travelling from Ninjago to Mysterium requires passing by the Land of Madness.[33] Overland travel from the First Land to Mysterium is possible, as Powerlid easily travelled back and fourth from the South Woods and the Cave of Bells, and Arin, Sora and Ras travelled to Abracalabria using bikes.[34]
The Cloud Kingdom is constantly moving, and the rebuilt Djinjago is currently placed in an ocean by Arrakore from the Pinnacle of Crystals.

Trivia
Trivia[]
- The Hageman Brothers came up with the idea of the realms,[35] including the idea that Chima was one of them.[36]
- It was later revealed that Chima itself was not a realm but rather a floating island within the Wyldness, one of the realms.
- The First Spinjitzu Master created four of the realms.[7][8][9]
- The concept of the realms is similar to the Nine Realms from Norse Mythology.
- The concept of the realms is different from the common science fiction concept of parallel timelines and the multiverse, as there are no alternate universes in the Ninjago canon.[37]
- However, an alternate universe is explored in the non-canon[38] graphic novel Kingdom of the Snakes, and time travel is a recurring plot mechanism in the original series.
- Ninjago is referred as a universe by Wu,[39] and as "all of space and time" by Kai,[40] which would suggest the other realms are simply parallel space-time continuums to Ninjago while not being alternate timelines like in the common format of multiverse shown in Marvel Comics.
- The New Heroes describes Wyldfyre's homeland as a planet different from the Wyldness.
- There is conflicting information about the exact number of realms there are. Some information indicates 16 including Ninjago,[41][16] and others state that there are 16 beyond Ninjago, which would mean there are 17 realms in total.[42][43][44][45][8] The latest official information about the subject states that there were indeed 16 beyond Ninjago, so 17 in total.[11] Given that the Departed and Cursed Realms combined into one location after the Merge, both options are technically correct now.[46]
- The realms were surrounded by an infinitely vast, formless void known as the Ethereal Divide.
- It has been confirmed by Tommy Andreasen that the worlds of Nexo Knights,[47] Hidden Side,[48] LEGO Island,[49] Bionicle,[50] and Dreamzzz are not part of the 16 realms in the Ninjago storyline.
- However, Ninjago and Chima exist as fictional universes within the world of Nexo Knights.[51]
- As for why Nexo Knights is not connected in terms of realms, Tommy Andreasen stated that "Not everything needs to be linked" and Nexo Knights "has a more easy going vibe."[52]
- Ninjago and Chima only exists as a TV shows in Dreamzzz.[53]
- There are a number of locations that have been confirmed as non-realms, and others whose status in relation to the realms is unclear:
- The Digiverse is not a realm.[54]
- Outer space is not a realm.[55] When asked if the realms are different planets or locations on the same planet, Tommy Andreasen said, "No ... just places."[56]
- Although the location where the ninja fought Clouse in The Realm of Shadows was said to be a realm by Tommy Andreasen,[57] it appears to be simply a temple in the Toxic Bogs.
Realm of Shadows
- Unagami and Dareth refer to Prime Empire as a realm.[58][59][60] However, it is not a realm.[61]
- The zoetrope room seen in "Grave Danger" is similar to the Entrance Chamber of the Department of Mysteries in the Harry Potter novel series. Both are circular rooms surrounded by doors, and have a bluish glow.
- The symbols from the first test represent the 16 realms. The yin-yang symbol probably represents Ninjago.
- However, Tommy Andreasen doesn't think the 16 doors seen in "Grave Danger" lead to the other 16 realms.[62][63]
- In "Grave Danger," Cole joked about one of the realms to be a "realm of hurt," which references the phrase, a "world of hurt."
- Zane was figuring out which door in the Tomb of the First Spinjitzu Master would lead to the rest of the chambers of the tomb in "Grave Danger," and Kai noted that the door Zane selected was the same way they came in. However, both halves of the tomb exist in Ninjago. Thus, the ninja did not cross between realms, instead, Zane performing Spinjitzu may have triggered a mechanism that rotated the entire room and landed that door on the other side of the tomb.
- According to Tommy Andreasen, not every realm has a living embodiment as the Cursed Realm did.[64]
- Tommy Andreasen has stated that the Wyldness (specifically the island of Chima) is his favorite realm.[65]
- As seen with the destruction of the Cursed Realm, destroying a realm consequently destroys its sister realm; in this case Djinjago.
- According to Tommy Andreasen, every realm has a sister realm.[66]
- However, Chris "Doc" Wyatt doesn't think that every realm has one.[67]
- However, due to there being 17 realms in total, one of the realms doesn't have one.
- According to Tommy Andreasen, Ninjago and the Underworld are not sister realms.[68]
- According to Tommy Andreasen, every realm has a sister realm.[66]
- When asked if the other realms would eventually fall as the Cursed Realm and Djinjago had, Tommy Andreasen replied, "There is an end to everything. Facts of life."[69] This implies that ultimately all the realms will be destroyed or become uninhabitable.
- Time passes differently in some realms, explaining how the Sky Pirates stayed alive for 200 years from Ninjago's perspective while being trapped in other realms.[70][71]
- However, none of the realms in the series so far have shown such a time difference. Though Lloyd speculated in "A Fragile Hope" that this was the case with the Never-Realm, Tommy Andreasen later clarified that Zane had been sent into the past when he was banished there, meaning this was not the case.[72]
- The time difference between Ninjago and the Wyldness was fluctuating before the Merge.[73]
- In Season 1, The adventure of Garmadon and Wu in the Land of Madness appeared to take place in a shorter amount of time than the events in Ninjago between the Wu's departure into the Land of Madness and the return of him and Garmadon.
- When the events of Skybound were undone by Jay's final wish in "The Way Back", other realms may not have been affected.[74]
- When asked whether the realms are more like separate universes or different dimensions, Andreasen responded, "Whatever ensures creative freedom."[75]
- As shown in "How to Build a Dragon," it is possible to listen to the broadcast from Ninjago in the Realm of Oni and Dragons.
- The characters referred to the realms as the "Realms/Lands of Creation," implying that they may have some affiliation with or were created by the power of Creation.
- In "A Cold Goodbye," Wu said that the Never-Realm is the most distant of all realms.
- Tommy Andreasen didn't know whether all realms will ever be shown, because "stuff like that needs to happen organically."[76]
- Chris "Doc" Wyatt stated that Ninjago: Dragons Rising will explore the other realms.[77]
- Since the release of Dragon Rising, there have been noticeable changes in the way the realms and its inhabitants are portrayed in comparison to the original series.
- It was put under question by the ninja whether Writers of Destiny can control destiny at all, but it was clarified that the writers do have some influence over events, but not to the extent they believe they do.[78]
- The correlation between the djinns' magic and Djinjago was underscored in "The Last Djinn," showing their interdependence. However, this was not the case in Skybound, as Nadakhan possessed the power to grant wishes, despite the lack of Djinjago's restoration or the replacement until the end of "Misfortune Rising."
- The Merged Realms originally had two moons, but after the Dragons Cores stabilized the world, there is now a single moon.
- Chris "Doc" Wyatt confirmed this was not an error.[82]
