The Maze of the Sphinx (flashback)[]
As Wu and Garmadon continued their journey, they took shelter from the rain inside a cave, making their way through many tunnels before finally discovering the exit. Upon leaving the tunnel, the brothers found themselves stunned in disbelief as they entered a sprawling desert village that was dominated by a black pyramid in its center.
Entering the village, the brothers made their way to the marketplace in search of supplies and directions to the Northern Ocean, passing by many of the local inhabitants, all of whom wore hats shaped exactly like the black pyramid, only smaller of course. One of the locals, Sage, welcomed the brothers to the Valley of the Sphinx and brought them to a food stall run by Mina where over tea and honey cakes, Sage answered some of the brothers' questions about the culture and inhabitants of the village. Amongst the answers they learned included that none of the locals ever leave the Valley, believing that a mythical Sphinx who was said to reside in the black pyramid would provide for their every need. After learning that, according to legend, the Sphinx had the power to grant wishes to those who approached it, Garmadon immediately rushed off to find a way into the pyramid, forcing Wu to run after his brother.
Some time later, the brothers and another traveler, Shezada, were successfully able to escape from the pyramid, being the first in many centuries to do so. Their escape did not go unnoticed, and many of the Valley's locals gathered around the trio to learn about their adventures inside the Pyramid, for as far as they knew, none who entered ever returned. In the midst of this chaos, Shezada disappeared into the crowd and the brothers decided to spend the night in the Valley before continuing their journey in the morning.
