History
History[]
Prior to the series[]
After Nyad defeated Wojira by prying her amulets, the First Spinjitzu Master gave the Wave Amulet to one of Trimaar's ancestors so the Merlopians could protect it.[2]
Prior to Seabound[]
Not long after his birth, Prince Kalmaar developed an interest in the ancient history of Merlopia. Of particular interest to the young prince was about his kingdom's near dominion over the entire world in days long gone. As he grew older, this interest began to take a darker turn, with the prince becoming ever increasingly obsessed with dominion and the legends of Wojira, whose powers he believed could wipe out the surface dwellers and return dominion of the world back to the seas. This obsession was not lost on Kalmaar's father, King Trimaar, who was rather disturbed by his son's occasional ramblings of superiority but chose not to dwell to hard on them, believing that his son would eventually outgrow his obsession with Wojira.
One day, as Trimaar and Kalmaar traveled the Endless Sea, they came across a sunken ship from the surface. While Kalmaar once again spoke of his distaste for the inferior surface dwellers, Trimaar spotted a young child being terrorized by a trio of eels. Fueled by sympathy for the child, Trimaar saved the boy and decided to adopt him, christening him "Benthomaar," meaning "deep sea."
As they grew older, both princes began to grow into very different people. While Benthomaar picked up his adoptive father's traits, such as kindness, honor, and sympathy for all living beings, Kalmaar on the other hand, would only delve further into his obsessions with Wojira. Eventually, these obsessions would lead to Kalmaar's discovery of the Temple of Wojira - a discovery that greatly alarmed Trimaar, who up to this point had believed that his son's studious nature was for other means.
Throughout these years, Benthomaar always tried make his adoptive brother come to love him as much as Trimaar did, though every attempt would be met with disdain. Following Kalmaar's discovery of the Temple of Wojira however, the former approached Bethomaar under the guise of finally wanting to accept him as a brother and suggested that they explore the Tartarus Trench together. Unfortunately, Benthomaar would soon discover to his broken dismay that Kalmaar was only interested in using him to find a safe passage to the Temple of Wojira. Once this was accomplished, Kalmaar made it clear in no uncertain terms that he would never care for Bethomaar as his brother and that he would want nothing to do with him. Left heartbroken, Benthomaar returned home, leaving Kalmaar to conduct his experiences on awakening Wojira undetected for several years.
Seabound[]
After countless failed attempts at recreating the Storm Amulet to awaken Wojira, Kalmaar's latest attempts finally drew the attention of outsiders thanks to this new method's expulsion of massive energy pulses. One day, after another failed attempt, Kalmaar discovered two surface dwellers inside the Temple of Wojira, instigating a brief skirmish.
After the surface dwellers escaped from Kalmaar and were summoned to face King Trimaar, they informed the latter king of Kalmaar's experiments on Wojira. Horrified by these accusations, Trimaar summoned his son to his chamber, only to learn from Kalmaar himself that all of the accusations were indeed true. Before Trimaar could do anything more, however, Kalmaar shot him with a blast from his trident, fatally wounding him.
Before he passed, Trimaar disclosed the truth of his assassination to Bethomaar and in his dying breath, expressed his love for his adoptive son and pleaded for him to assist the surface dwellers in stopping Kalmaar from awakening Wojira. Benthomaar would go on to fulfill his adoptive father's final wishes, journeying alongside the Ninja to secure the Storm Amulet from the Island of the Keepers while assisting them in battle against Kalmaar and the Maaray guards on multiple occasions.
During the Great Flood, Kalmaar rode into Ninjago City atop of Wojira, cackling maniacally as victory seemed almost within his grasp. In his final battle against Bethomaar however, Kalmaar's trident was destroyed by the latter, causing him to lose control over Wojira who promptly turned against her tormentor and devoured him, ending his life. Following Wojira's defeat and the receding of the waters, Benthomaar returned to Merlopia where he was crowned King of the Endless Sea.
