Death

Overview

This article is about a subject that is relevant to both the main Ninjago storyline and The LEGO Ninjago Movie. Information may be more directed toward one continuity than the other.
“After the Merge, the Departed were finally able to move on.”
“Move on? To where?”
“I don't know. Another phase of existence? To be reborn? Beats me, but I like to think they go to eternal rest.”
Morro and Arin, "The Spectral Lands"

Death is the fate that awaits most living beings throughout the realms, whether through a premature end or the ravages of time. It is the separation of the soul from the body, after which the soul may pass into one of the afterlife realms.

Before the existence of the afterlife realms, souls moved on after death.[1] After the creation of the Departed Realm, majority of the dead once dwelled there for the rest of the eternity. After the Merge, the Departed Realm and Cursed Realm have fused into the Spectral Lands, a region of the merged lands that functions as an antechamber where departed souls pass through before "moving on" to whatever comes next. The final fate of the deceased is now unknown.

Realms of the deceased

Realms of the deceased[]

In the Merged Realms, there are two known realms for the deceased to exist in (originally three before the Merge). Deceased souls are normally sent to the Spectral Lands, though the realm is not the afterlife, merely a passageway for souls to transcend beyond the Ethereal Divide to an unknown existence.

Returning to life

Returning to life[]

Death can also be thwarted, but the ways that this can be accomplished are generally considered immoral, as it goes against the natural order of the world. Likewise, the consequences of such methods can prove too dire or even worse than death itself. These are some ways that have been used to defy death:

  • Resurrection with the help of Higher Powers (resurrection by the forces of someone who has incredible power: First Spinjitzu Master or The Overlord)
  • Resurrectea (temporary postponement of death, requires the deceased individual's body to be present to ingest it)
  • Rift of Return (requires powerful magic from the Yin-Yang Eclipse to sustain; once every 3,721 years)
  • The power of the Yin Blade (places victim into a state of ghost-like limbo; destroyed)
  • Being wished into the body of another living being by a Djinn King (possession of another person)
  • Killing one's murderer (or one closely associated with the circumstances that caused their death) with a Departed Blade
  • Escaping from the Cursed Realm or Underworld (escapee is left in an undead state of being, either skeletal or cursed; Cursed Realm destroyed)
  • Resurrection by the Mega Weapon (massive energy toll on user required; destroyed)
  • Reversing time on the corpse of the deceased (can be negated by Tomorrow's Tea)
  • Escape from the Departed Realm (requires a massive amount of catalyzed magic to sustain indefinitely)
  • Imprisonment in the Djinn Blade (indefinite, unconscious limbo for all eternity)
  • Oni Masks (when they are united; exclusive to those with Oni blood; two masks destroyed)
  • Necromancy
  • Having nine lives as a cat due to the Cat-Eye Jewel.[13]
  • Within the Prime Empire video game world

Trivia

Trivia[]

  • Although no skeletons have been released since 2015 that have arms with ball and socket joints which allowed them to move all the way out to the side and all the way around, all skeletons in Ninjago have hands made this way, except the Skulkin and Re-Awakened, who use a newer version of the hands. The reason for preserving the original hands is probably that the skeletons can be in better and more diverse positions.
  • Interestingly, although all the other skeletons in the show have the same design as the real LEGO skeletons, the Fangpyre skeleton in "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" and Anacondrai skeletons in "Never Trust a Snake" look like real skeletons, although in "Green and Gold" Serpentine have the same skeletons as humans.
  • Whatever race they are, any deceased individual's soul will pass through the Spectral Lands before moving on. However, the deceased can be intercepted during their trek through the Spectral Lands or even resurrected by greater beings as seen with Lloyd and Harumi.
