Overview
The ninja[note 1] (also known as the Masters of Spinjitzu[2]) are a group of young warriors, mostly Elemental Masters, founded by Master Wu, that protect the land of Ninjago, and later the Merged Lands.
The original iteration initially composed of Zane, Jay, Cole, and Kai, led by Wu, but were later joined by the fabled Green Ninja of prophecy, Lloyd Garmadon, and Kai's sister Nya, who originally aided the ninja as Samurai X and later became Elemental Master of Water; the mantle of Samurai X was later adopted by Nindroid ally P.I.X.A.L.. After a cataclysmic event known as the Merge scattered the ninja and their closest allies across the Merged Realms, Lloyd took on a new generation of ninja students in Arin, Sora, Riyu, Wyldfyre, and Frak.

Pilot episodes[]
The original four ninja
Dreading the return of his evil brother, Lord Garmadon, who is desperate to claim the Golden Weapons of Spinjitzu, Master Wu, the younger son of the First Spinjitzu Master who created Ninjago with the weapons, searched the land for four teenagers to find the weapons first. He came across the current Elemental Masters of the Elements of Creation: Cole—the Master of Earth, Zane—the Master of Ice, Jay—the Master of Lightning, and Kai—the Master of Fire, whose sister Nya had been kidnapped by Garmadon's army of Skulkin, though none of the four had unlocked their respective Elemental Powers yet. With Wu's teaching, the four became ninja, learned the art of Spinjitzu, and retrieved all but the last weapon, the Sword of Fire. Unfortunately, Garmadon used Nya to lure Kai to the Fire Temple and stole the sword while the Skeleton Army snuck up on the sleeping ninja and stole the other three weapons.
Wu followed the Skulkin general Samukai to the Underworld while the ninja followed him by taming the four dragons who guarded the Golden Weapons.
The four watched as Wu and Samukai fought, the former only possessing the Sword of Fire against Samukai with the other three weapons, giving him the advantage. Samukai eventually gained a hold of all four and intended to use them against Garmadon, however, their immense power overwhelmed him leading to his death, the ensuing tear through space and time allowing Garmadon to escape to the Realm of Madness, which would enable him to wield all four weapons without death. Once the ninja, along with Nya, had moved to Wu's Monastery, they continuing their training for Garmadon's return.
Rise of the Snakes[]
Playing video games
Unfortunately, lack of action led them to laziness, preferring to play video games instead of staying fit and powerful. Unbeknownst to them, a new threat was brewing. Wishing to live up to his father's feared name, while harboring feelings of sadness for his dad's departure, Garmadon's son Lloyd sought to cause chaos in Ninjago, and achieve his selfish desires in the process. After the ninja made a fool of him, he inadvertently led to the successful release of all five tribes of the mythical Serpentine (one tribe, the Hypnobrai, burning down Wu's Monastery, forcing the team to relocate to the Destiny's Bounty, a damaged pirate ship Zane found by following a mysterious Falcon), now led by the last of the Anacondrai, Pythor P. Chumsworth, who seeks the Fangblades to awaken the Great Devourer, the monster responsible for turning Garmadon's heart evil.
Training in the Monastery of Spinjitzu
The Serpentine
The ninja battle the united Serpentine, while a mysterious samurai continuously steals their thunder. Eventually, Lloyd, who was taken in by the ninja after being betrayed by the snakes, is captured and Wu leaves to find someone who can help free him. On their own, the ninja engage in battle with the Serpentine to stop the awakening of the Devourer, each one unlocking their true potential in the process (with the team learning Zane is a Nindroid). They also learn Nya is the Samurai due to being left out.
Wu returns with Garmadon to help save Lloyd, who to everyone's surprise (and Garmadon's dismay) is the Green Ninja, the warrior prophesied to defeat the "dark lord." Though the ninja, with Garmadon's help, recoveri all four Fang Blades, Pythor steals them and manages to awaken the Great Devourer, though it devours him and Wu. The Devourer was only able to be defeated by Garmadon with the help of the ninja, wielding all four Golden Weapons, the "dark lord" escaping afterward.
Finding Wu in a puddle of the Devourer's venom, the ninja promise to train Lloyd so he'll be ready for the decisive battle against his father.
Legacy of the Green Ninja[]
The Stone Army
After the defeat of the Great Devourer, the ninja, along with the Green Ninja, fought against Garmadon and the remaining Serpentine army. Garmadon tries to get rid of the ninja using his newly made Mega Weapon many times in order for Lloyd to not become the Green Ninja but they eventually destroyed it with help from the past versions of the Golden Weapons. Lloyd also used Tomorrow's Tea to age up in the process.
The Final Battle between good and evil
After Garmadon was betrayed by the Serpentine, he came across an evil spirit called the Overlord and formed an alliance with him to take over Ninjago. But the Overlord ended up possessing him and turn him into his true Dragon form to purge Ninjago into pure Darkness. Luckily Lloyd, having become the Golden Ninja thanks to the other ninja, was finally able to defeat him and Garmadon returns to normal along with anyone else being corrupted by the Dark Matter.
Rebooted[]
Ninjago was at peace, thanks to Lloyd, who defeated the Overlord, but he returns, having integrated himself into the Borg Industries' computer systems. The ninja had to fight again with the Overlord, only now with an old enemy, Pythor, and an army of Nindroids created based on Zane's blueprints to serve the Overlord.
The Overlord's army of Nindroids
However, the ninja emerged victoriously, but at the cost of Zane, who sacrificed himself. Unbeknownst to the others, however, Zane's mind and spirit had transferred into the Digiverse and managed to rebuild himself.
The Overlord in his Golden Master form
Soon after, however, he was captured by a thief named Ronin along with his fellow Nindroid/girlfriend, P.I.X.A.L.. Zane was taken to Garmadon's old mentor, Chen, where he was stripped of his power and held hostage.
Tournament of Elements[]
The ninja allying with the descendant Elemental Masters
After the apparent sacrifice of Zane, the ninja are divided, where they part ways. However, everything changed when Lloyd attempts to bring them back together and they discovered that Zane was still alive. To rescue him they had to go to Chen's Island and take part in the Tournament of Elements.
During this time, they discovered the truth of their powers after they met and befriended the Elemental Masters. The ninja was also able to unlock the ability to use Elemental Dragons.
The ninja allied with their new friends and old ones to make one final effort at the Corridor of Elders in order to defend their home against Chen and his cult of Anacondrai worshippers.
The ninja looking forward to the future
With the sacrifice of Garmadon, Chen and his army were banished to the Cursed Realm, officially bringing peace between the Serpentine and the humans.
Shadow of Ronin (non-canon)[]
Despite defeating Chen, the Ninja continue their training with Wu in the city of Spinjago. One day, the team were suddenly attacked by the mercenary group known as the Dark Samurai. As they fought the forces of the Dark Samurai across the city, they encountered Ronin, the group's leader. After their initial confrontation with the mercenary, he used an ancient artifact, the Obsidian Glaive, to drain the Ninja of their memories. Thanks to Wu's timely intervention however, Ronin failed to completely drain the Ninja of their memories and was forced to escape.
In order to restore their memories, the Ninja embarked on a quest to discover the four Obsidian Weapons. Throughout this quest, the Ninja fought against Ronin and his Dark Samurai throughout multiple encounters, eventually coming to a head at the Floating Ruins where Ronin revealed his possession of one of the Elemental Forges. Realizing the evil that Ronin could unleash with such artifacts, Wu split the ninja into two teams to recover the forges of fire and ice before Ronin could get to them. Kai, Zane, and Wu embarked to Torchfire mountain to retrieve the forge of fire, while Jay, Cole, and Dareth searched for the forge of ice. Although both teams were to rendezvous outside the vault of ice, Ronin intercepted them and used his newly possessed forge of earth to force the Ninja into giving him the two that they had collected.
Having lost the forges, Wu leads the Ninja to Hiroshi's Labyrinth in search of the Primal Fulcrum, now with the assistance of Lloyd and Misako. Upon uncovering the fulcrum however, Misako betrayed the team, revealing that she had her memories altered by Ronin and now believed that the mercenary was her beloved. Enraged by this, Lloyd destroyed the Obsidian Glaive, restoring Misako's memories as Ronin and his soldiers escaped to Chen's island to complete their plan. The Ninja then pursued Ronin to Chen's Island, fighting their way through the Dark Samurai ranks, until they reached the palace's courtyard where Ronin was activating the fulcrum. After an attempt to reason with the mercenary failed, the Ninja pursued him into the vortex he had opened.
Atop a series of stones floating within the Ethereal Divide, the Ninja face off against Ronin and the last of his guards as they attempt to return Chen from the Cursed Realm. In the ensuing battle, the Ninja exhaust the powers of the elemental forges, successfully destroying them and foiling Ronin's plan. Infuriated by his defeat, the mercenary covers his escape with gun fire as a giant, ghostly hand briefly emerges from the fading portal. In order to prevent further horrors from escaping, the Ninja channel their elemental powers through the Obsidian Weapons to destroy the primal fulcrum, resulting in an explosion that scatters the Obsidian Weapons while returning the Ninja back to Ninjago.
Before Possession[]
At some point in time, the ninja had another encounter with Ronin, who ultimately abandoned them in a precarious situation.[3]
Possession[]
Morro and the Ghost Warriors
When opening the portal to the Cursed Realm, a ghost named Morro, who was the first student of Master Wu, escaped and possessed Lloyd and shortly after takes the Realm Crystal and liberates the Preeminent, the physical embodiment of the Cursed Realm. The ninja were faced with problems, as their power depended on Lloyd, which left them powerless, and Cole was turned into a ghost, and Ronin betrayed them to the Ghost Warriors. However, things shifted for the better as they learned a new technique Airjitzu and Cole learned how to accept his form and learned some new ghost moves. Nya also learned she was the master of Water and trained to use her powers.
Eventually, Lloyd was freed of his possession in exchange for the Realm Crystal and the ninja regain their powers and put up a better fight with the ghosts.
The ninja after their victory
In the end, thanks to Nya, who unlocked her True Potential, they defeated the Preeminent and Morro, thus sending them to the Departed Realm along with the rest of the Ghost Warriors as well as the people who were still trapped in the Cursed Realm, including Chen and Garmadon. With this, the ninja achieved victory and gained a new member for their team.
Skybound[]
Nadakhan and the Sky Pirates
When Chen's right-hand man Clouse, who escaped the Cursed Realm, released a Djinn, Nadakhan, the ninja will have to stop him before he marries Nya and gains infinite wishes. Unfortunately, he stole the Realm Crystal and released the rest of his pirate crew, who helped him build Djinjago from parts of Ninjago. All the Ninja other than Jay and Nya were trapped inside of the Djinn Blade and will count on Jay to save them. Fortunately. Jay's last wish caused everyone, except him and Nya, to forget the majority of the season as well as preventing Clouse from releasing Nadakhan.
Dark Island Trilogy[]
Unwilling to give up his vengeance against the Ninja, Clouse stumbled on the Dark Island and regains his magic. He then released Nadakhan's crew and used them to help him corrupt the Temple of Light which in turn corrupt Ninjago. To do so, they kidnap numerous fishermen, and Lloyd's mother, Misako to retrieve the Dark Matter to corrupt the temple. The Ninja and Master Wu went to rescue them but were briefly separated. Fortunately, Wu uses the Golden Mech to cleanse the Temple from the darkness, causing Ninjago to turn back to normal and Clouse ends up getting banished to the Underworld.
Day of the Departed[]
Following the Sky Pirate conflict, Ninjago celebrated Day of the Departed, a holiday, and the ninja spread out across the land of Ninjago to remember their ancestors. Zane remembers his father, Dr. Julien, at Birchwood Forest, Kai and Nya remember their parents, Ray and Maya, at their blacksmith shop, Lloyd and Misako, remember Garmadon at the Corridor of Elders, and Wu remembers his father at the Monastery of Spinjitzu, while Jay spends time with his parents at their junkyard.
Samukai, General Kozu, General Cryptor, Master Chen, and Morro resurrected
In the meantime, Cole was suddenly forgotten by his friends and goes to Master Yang's Haunted Temple to settle his debt with the ghostly master. However, a sinister plot by Yang leads Cole to free the spirits of the ninja old enemies from the Departed Realm, including Samukai, Kozu, Cryptor, Chen, and Morro, all of whom possess statues at the Ninjago Museum of History. Seeking revenge, the revived villains spread throughout Ninjago to confront their adversaries.
The ninja defeated their ghostly foes and gathered at the museum, where they were told by Wu and a redeemed Morro of Yang's intentions and how they forgot Cole. The ninja then realized of the danger Cole is in and rushed to aid him, while Morro returns to the Departed Realm at peace.
With the Yin Blade in hand, Yang proceeded to go to the roof of his temple and activates the artifact, using its reality-warping powers to open the Rift of Return. However, Cole confronted Yang, they fought with the master being forced the latter to defend himself with the Yin Blade with success, slicing apart Cole's blade in the process.
The Day of the Departed celebration
However, when Cole's support by his friends powered him up, Cole used his charged fists to attack Yang, who attempted to shield himself with the Yin Blade. Unable to withstand the assault, the Yin Blade was shattered by Cole's attack, and with its destruction and the ending Yin-Yang Eclipse, the Rift of Return started to close as a result. However, a reformed Yang threw Cole through the rift changing him back to a human and the ninja gained a new base in the Temple of Airjitzu.
The Hands of Time[]
After the Day of the Departed, the ninja returned to Ninjago Museum of History and discovered that Master Wu and Garmadon confronted two Elemental Masters, after which the ninja decided to stop the Time Twins, but it was too late as they had recollected the Time Blades. Finally they together with Kai, Nya, and Wu traveling to the past, 40 years before, after the defeat of Acronix and Krux. After looking with no avail, Jay and Cole continued for looking for Wu while the others continued to be the protectors of the realm.
Sons of Garmadon[]
The Sons of Garmadon
One year later, the ninja discovered that a group called Sons of Garmadon are trying to revive Garmadon but in his evil form. They are also reunited with their master, who is revealed to have been de-aged into an infant after his journey through time but is slowly aging back to normal. The ninja also had to protect the Oni Masks, but what they did not have in mind was that Princess Harumi was really the leader of the Sons of Garmadon.
The original ninja and toddler Wu trapped in another realm
The Sons of Garmadon finally revived Garmadon, who was able to defeat Lloyd with ease and leave the latter powerless. This allowed Garmadon to take control of Ninjago after Kai, Jay, Zane, and Cole, along with Baby Wu, ended up in the Realm of Oni and Dragons when they escaped Garmadon's creation, the Colossus, leading the others to think they were killed.
Hunted[]
The Resistance is formed.
After being defeated, the ninja have been separated as Ninjago falls under the control of Lord Garmadon. The remaining ninja, Lloyd, and Nya form a rag-tag team with brown ninja Dareth, P.I.X.A.L., and Misako. They were attacked by Garmadon's forces but soon learn that their friends were not killed but were instead teleported elsewhere. They are nearly defeated by the enemy but are saved and gather more allies in old friends to form the Resistance in order to defeat Garmadon and his followers as well as save the city.
The stranded ninja and Teen Wu in the Realm of Oni and Dragons
The four original ninja (Kai, Cole, Jay, and Zane) along with a rapidly aging Wu must face the dangers of the Realm of Oni and Dragons by dealing with the threats of Dragon Hunters led by Iron Baron, as well seeking to free the dragons and find a way back home to Ninjago.
In Ninjago, Lloyd was able to bring hope back to the citizens of Ninjago and personally opposed his father in the process. This resulted in Garmadon leading an attack on the Resistance's base and having most of his allies imprisoned.
Very soon, the marooned ninja were able to ally with the hunters and the dragons, defeat Iron Baron, and locate the Dragon Armor, and gained new dragons to return back home.
The ninja and their allies hailed as heroes
The ninja returned to Ninjago and saved Lloyd's group by using the dragons to rescue them. While Wu and Lloyd fought Garmadon, the ninja evacuated the citizens who realized their saviors returned. The Resistance also broke out to help the ninja in taking back the city. The ninja dealt with the Colossus and with help from their allies defeated the behemoth while Lloyd regained his powers after overcoming his father. In the end, the Sons of Garmadon (except for Harumi and Mr. E due to their deaths) and Garmadon himself were sent to Kryptarium Prison. The ninja were then hailed as heroes by the people for saving them once again.

The ninja were honored by the city for their feat of defeating Garmadon, as they were rewarded with a restored Destiny's Bounty. They also have rebuilt the Monastery of Spinjitzu and moved back into their old home.
They faced a new problem when one of the Dragon Hunters Faith and Firstbourne, the mother of all dragons, arrive in their realm, revealing a threat is coming. Very soon, darkness emerges from the Realm Crystal, and the city is engulfed. To combat the threat, they reluctantly free Garmadon from prison to help them have a chance against them. While evacuating people from the city, Cole is lost when dark tentacles start to pull him down and Nya accidentally destroys his ropes, causing him to plummet. They regained hope when Nya tells Kai that he can reforge the Golden Weapons out of the armor and fight the Oni since they fear it.
The ninja overpowering the Oni
The ninja proceed to forge their weapons, while Cole, who survived the drop, narrowly manages to avoid being petrified in the city and used his drill vehicle to escape the Oni and head for the monastery to help his friends.
As the ninja prepare for their confrontation, the Oni make their way to the Monastery where they fight their enemy. Despite using the Golden Weapons and having a fully powered Garmadon and Wu on their side, the ninja are unable to do much until Cole arrives and helps them with the tides evening for a while, but the Oni were still having the upper-hand. However, Lloyd got the idea to use the Tornado of Creation to fight them off. In the process, Lloyd meets his grandfather in the Grasslands, who praises him on his efforts and gives him the chance to come with him, but Lloyd decided to be reunited with his friends, and only remember it as a dream.
The ninja and their allies celebrating the defeat of the Oni and the addition of a new mural
With the battle over and the Oni seemingly vanquished, the ninja commemorate their victory on the Ninjago history mural while Garmadon leaves the monastery to head out on his own path.
Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu[]
Six months after the fight with the Oni, the ninja were able to enjoy a time of peace, but became so lazy that Wu easily tossed them aside in training.
The ninja and Clutch Powers in front of Aspheera's tomb
The ninja resorted to traveling around the city to find a sense of adventure but nothing came up because most of their enemies are either arrested, in the Departed Realm, or in hiding. As a result, they travel to the Desert of Doom with explorer Clutch Powers. Unknowingly, the ninja accidentally release the Serpentine sorceress Aspheera, who steals Kai's power and leaves them trapped.

Lloyd traveling to the Castle of Ice
After the ninja went to the Never-Realm, Lloyd and a Formling named Akita went to the Castle of Ice to rescue Zane from the Ice Emperor while the others stayed behind to defend the Ice Fishers, but only for Lloyd to realized that the Ice Emperor was actually Zane, who became the Ice Emperor by being corrupted by the Forbidden Scroll and had his memories lost by Vex.
In order to free Zane from Vex's manipulation, Lloyd forms another Resistance with Kataru and Grimfax, but only for the Resistance to be quickly defeated by the Blizzard Samurai. However, when Lloyd was mocked by Vex, Zane regained his memories and freed the realm from its eternal winter, allowing the ninja to be reunited and return to Ninjago and have Vex exiled far away for his tyranny.

So they travel with a survivor named Twitchy Tim to the island to investigate. Once they arrived, the Ninja ended up being ambushed by a bunch of moving statues and are placed in a cell along with Wu, Misako, Clutch Powers, and his interns by a ancient tribe known as the Keepers. Lloyd and Garmadon attempted to fight against the Overlord, alongside a vengeful Harumi, who discovered the truth about her biological parents' death. With Lloyd resisting his unlocked Oni form, the original Ninja use their Golden Weapons to combine them into a dragon and defeat the Overlord, at the cost of their powers.

After many days of stopping MergeQuakes and following Nya's leads, they come across the Temple of the Dragon Cores, where they learn that in order to stop the MergeQuakes, they must unite the three Dragon Cores and immediately split up to search for them while Zane stayed to research the portal gate that led them to the Imperium Monastery, as well as bring in Arin and Sora's friend, Alfonzo Frohicky, to maintain the monastery in their absence.
Lloyd and Arin went to the Mother Garden, making a brief pit stop to help algae farmers reclaim their village from mind controlled Merlopian pirates, and discover from the Mucoids that Rapton tried to steal their Dragon Core. Despite their effort to spare him, Rapton double-crosses them, only to be taken out by agents that came from the Administration, who take the core for themselves. Kai and Wyldfyre went to the latter's home of the Lava Wastes in the Wyldness, running into some complications along the way, due to Wyldfyre's pranks, they're forced to clean up the Lava-Tides' village from Wyldfyre's past antics before Dorama showed up to claim the Dragon Core, but the two escape, although Heatwave was wounded in the escape. Nya, Sora, and Riyu went to the Pinnacle of Crystals, only to find the location where the Dragon Core normally was is empty, and Nya ends up triggering a trap that sends Howlers after them, but are saved by Sora the dragon's old acquaintance, a Djinn named Arrakore, who was in exile following Djinjago's destruction, also learning the dragon's real name, Zanth. But after eliminating the Howlers, Arrakore gives them an arrow that would guide them to the core, leading them to the Land of Lost Things, where they come across Cole, who now had an ability to form into a golem, protecting exiled children along with a Geckle/Munce hybrid named Geo, who is an Elemental Master of Fusion before discovering the core was powering a device keeping a creature called Sweeper back, until Dr. LaRow managed to steal it while they dealt with containing the Sweeper. When it came to attacking Imperium, Cole stayed behind before following a strange light whispering his name. While healing Heatwave, Kai taught Wyldfyre how to keep calm before discovering the core they managed to grab was a fake. Lloyd and Arin find themselves in The Administration, where they're guided by someone handing them notes that lead them to discover it was Zane, who was detained by their agents when his attempts to activate the gate were detected by them, and learn they plan to destroy the core the two agents took. Managing to retrieve it, Lloyd, Zane, and Arin escape, unbeknownst to any of them, leaving Jay behind.
Lloyd, Kai, Zane, Arin, and Wyldfyre arrive at Imperium
Infiltrating Imperium, they find the Imperium Teen Resistance Force, who intend to expose Beatrix for her deception, which they succeed. However, using the two Dragon Cores and one made from the energy of the Source Dragon, Beatrix began opening MergeQuakes, Kai, Wyldfyre, and Riyu being caught in some, until Sora, unlocking her True Potential, destroys it and Arin sends Beatrix into a MergeQuake before a storm occurs.
The Ninja make themselves known once again
The Ninja prepare to eat Arin's pies
Then, using all three cores, Lloyd was able to stop the MergeQuakes, bring the world back in balance and returning those who were caught in the MergeQuakes, including Kai, Wyldfyre, and Riyu before Lloyd uses them to free the Source Dragon of Energy.
The Elemental Mechs[]
Sometime after stopping the MergeQuakes, while Lloyd went on away for an unknown reason, Kai decided to use the time with Arin and Sora to make a slide course, only for Cole to return, having heard news of Chronosteel being smuggled in, which Arin instantly knew was at Kreel's Junkyard. After using some to create three elemental mechs to calm an inadvertently mutated Lobbo, they confiscate the rest from Kreel. Kai, Cole, Nya, Arin, Sora, and Riyu later went to the Crossroads to watch the Mech Master 5000, which is interrupted by the Mechanic, wanting the mechs for himself, but manage to defeat him, during which, Kai, Cole, and Sora discover they can disassemble, reassemble, and swap mech parts. Sometime, Arin and Sora brought Kai and Cole to the Crossroads for the annual Noodle cook-off, which was interrupted by the Ice Dragons, who were after the Lava-Tides. After restraining both parties, Arin discovered the Lava-Tide chef, Lava-Tony, had stolen their eggs before Riyu sends the latter flying towards an oven, which explodes and covered them all in noodles, which they had to explain to Lloyd.
Dragons Rising, Season 2[]
Sometime later, Riyu had grown a little taller. A couple of ninja fans film the Ninja, who take down the Mechanic after saving some breakdancers, put out a fire, try to bring Fugi-Dove and a cat down from a tree, rescue Lobbo from his runaway mech, which Sora then turned into a DJ set, and initiates a party that Arin and Wyldfyre also attend. However, Lloyd had been suffering from visions that haunt him in his sleep, seemingly connected to a mallet recently stolen by Cinder, the new Master of Smoke, a user of Shatterspin, and one of Ras' apprentices.
The Ninja face the Wolf Clan
After Ras took over the Cloud Kingdom and seeking guidance from the Source Dragons, Lloyd, Kai, Nya, Arin, Sora, Wyldfyre, who stowed away while recovering from a broken leg inflicted on her by Cinder, and Riyu meet Egalt and Rontu, who agree on the latter's part to teach them the Rising Dragon technique.
Kai becomes a Third Fang Ninja
Despite some setbacks, including Arin gravely injuring Egalt and Wyldfyre discovering the latter is sick from the Wasting Sickness, Kai achieves the technique, just as the Blood Moon rises, turning the two dragons to stone.
Cole and Zane reunite Bonzle with Gandalaria
Meanwhile, Cole was able to bring the Finders to the monastery through Imperium's repaired portal gate Geo had been working on in his spare time and discovered Bonzle is a spell need to counter the Blood Moon before, along with Zane, take her to her creator, a sorceress named Gandalaria, despite being delayed by Dorama. Coming across the same light that guided Cole, they meet Gandalaria at a monastery similar to their own before the Administration arrived, who were attempting to retrieve Zane. Defeating them, and not knowing Jay was part of the attempt to retrieve Zane, they head to the Wyldness to seal Bonzle away, only to be ambushed by Jordana, a former Imperium lab technician, who takes Bonzle. Despite Arin's attempt to keep her away, Ras retrieved Bonzle and brought her to the Shadow Dojo, where he initiates a ritual to release the Forbidden Five, using Euphrasia and the monks as sacrifices. However, despite Kai sent into the portal to bring one member out, and Lloyd and Nya achieving Rising Dragon, the ninja were able to stop the ritual and save the Cloud Kingdom while Kai and Bonzle think of a way to escape the Nether-Space.
The Ninja, Suetonius, and Gandalaria after stopping the ritual, and losing Kai and Bonzle
While Zane went to learn Rising Dragon under Egalt and Wyldfyre training non-stop to carry on Kai's legacy, Arin and Sora, while escaping the Administration after failing to find information about Arin's parents, discover Riyu's matriarch, whose crown has been taken before, despite the Craglings' attempt to heal her, she dies and they, along with Lloyd, Nya, and Wyldfyre, take the matriarch's baby to Riyu's herd. When the Source Dragon of Motion arrived to tell them to participate in the Tournament of the Sources, they discover they weren't invited and decide to break in, which gets approved by Roby, who personally approves invitations for them, where they also catch up with Tox and Mr. Pale, as well as meeting Arin's old friend, Frak, and Beatrix's twin sister, Zeatrix, who has a grudge against the Ninja for dethroning the former without her consent. Later that night, they were attacked, but were thwarted and discovered the assassins, as well as two more, were bots and had Gilba Thorns from the Mother Garden, Zant-Tanz, the Master of Plants, was voluntarily disqualified.
The Ninja discover Jay lost his memories and joined the Wolf Clan.
They then discover Jay, who had been deceived into joining the Wolf Clan, only to be cast aside when he lost to Nya, effectively dumping her at the same time. After her loss to Cinder, Wyldfyre inadvertently gets all the Ninja disqualified, but they prove their worthiness by winning the Cavern Run. Upon her loss to Nokt, Nya intended to search for Jay, only to be captured by Nokt alongside Riyu. When it came to Lloyd and Zeatrix, she struck him down, despite his victory, which led him to withdrawing from his battle with Nokt while Sora defeats Frak, who was revealed to be in the Wolf Clan until his loss. Cole and Arin soon discover a monastery with many portal gates and come across the spirit of Wu, who confesses to being responsible for the Merge, devastating Arin. With assistance from Zur, a Devonian Elemental Master of Reflex, Wyldfyre discovered Roby's uncle, Bleckt, conspired with Ras to rig the tournament, and called him out as Nokt was being crowned the winner of the tournament. With the scheme uncovered, Nokt, having absorbed all the participants' Elemental Powers, and his sister Rox, who possessed Jordana during the ritual, create a rift with the Arc Dragons' crowns to release the rest of the Forbidden Five from the Nether-Space. With help from Riyu, Nya opened another rift to free Kai and Bonzle before Kai took on Nokt, until Roby absorbed the powers and returned them to their rightful owners. As the Forbidden Five make their getaway and Nokt grabbing Ras, Arin, miffed at Sora deceiving him, Lloyd's teaching inabilities, and learning Wu was responsible for his parents' disappearance, betrays the Ninja to rescue Ras as the portal gate to the Cloud Kingdom is destroyed, stranding them in a different realm. Sora was then proclaimed the tournament winner by default while Wyldfyre and Roby begin a relationship, Lloyd receives a Dragon Icon from the Motion Source Dragon, Frak joins the ninja, and Kai decides to help Nya search for Jay in an attempt to regain the latter's memory. Arin ends up in the First Land with Ras, where he vowed to help the latter get better, believing Ras is the only one who could really help him find his parents.

Ages of the ninja
Ages of the ninja[]
- “Jay, we're still teenagers.”
- “Yeah, but grown-up teenagers.”
| — Kai and Jay, "The Gilded Path" |
The ninja's ages are not specified.[7]
Ninjago: The classic ninja were in their teenage years during the original series, with the exception of Zane, who is decades older but was built to have the appearance of a teenager. Lloyd became physically around the age of his older friends due to the effects of the Tomorrow's Tea, but he is still chronologically the youngest of the team due to having originally been a child. Zane is over 100 years old, due to spending around 60 years as the Ice Emperor in the Never-Realm.
While the ninja were officially teenagers during the original series, with Jay referring to them as "grown-up teenagers" in "The Gilded Path," their specific ages and the amount of time that passes between seasons was kept vague for the purpose of keeping them in an age-range that is young and relatable to the show's target audience.[8][9][10] Furthermore, Tommy Andreasen noted that the age of the ninja is not specific and is up to the viewer's interpretation.[11] According to the Hageman Brothers, the ninja's aging is comparable to Bart Simpson's, whom is often used as an example of the phenomenon of cartoon characters remaining the same age despite the passage of time.[12] Similarly, Tommy Andreasen compared the ninja's aging to that of Batman, stating that "time is less of a factor" in fiction.[13] Tommy Kalmar refers to the group as "teen ninjas" in his 2022 "What is Ninjago?" video on LEGO.com, meaning they were still officially teenagers during the events of Crystalized.[14]
Ninjago: Dragons Rising: Sometime after Crystalized, the Merge occurs and the story skips ahead years later. Ninja students Arin and Sora are teenagers,[15] Wyldfyre and Frak are teenagers as well because they have long legs in the present, and were children before the merge, and until the Merge for Wyldfyre. In the case of Frak, he could age differently due to being a Serpentine. While the amount of time is unknown, enough years have passed that the ninja students grew up from children with short legs to teenagers with normal-sized legs, instead of the medium legs which pre-teens/young teenagers usually have in LEGO post-2018. This may imply that the older six ninja, excluding Zane, are now young adults in their 20s instead of teens, but as mentioned above, the creators do not specify ages.
See more specific information and possible estimations of the ninja's ages, as well as the sources for the information, on the individual pages' Age sections linked here: Arin, Cole, Jay, Kai, Lloyd, Nya, Sora, Zane.

- Most of the ninja, including Master Wu, Misako, and P.I.X.A.L., have changed their physical appearances in the show.
- Jay, Kai, Zane, and Cole turned into kids in "Child's Play," but they turned back into teenagers shortly after.
- Jay changed his hairstyle after becoming a bounty hunter, sharing the same hairstyle as Unagami and Okino.
- Lloyd was a child until he threw a jar of Tomorrow's Tea at the Grundle in "Child's Play" and aged into an old man in "Wishmasters." He reverted back to a teen due to Jay's last wish.
- Zane was originally a Nindroid in human form until "The Titanium Ninja" and debuted in his titanium form in "The Invitation." In "The Mask of Deception," he gains a cloak that lets him turn into his human-like form. However, he has never used this ability since Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu, but uses it again in "The Benefit of Grief" and (in his damaged state) "Return of the Ice Emperor."
- In the latter half of Season 3 (Dragons Rising), Zane is rebuilt to be much bigger.
- Cole was a human until "The Temple on Haunted Hill," where he was turned into a ghost by Yang, but turned human again in "Day of the Departed." He now has a scar from the transformation, though it has faded as of Season 8 and only shows when he performs his Earth Punch.

- The classic ninja's appearances changed in Season 8, being similar to their movie counterparts. See here for more information.
- Wyldfyre changes her hairstyle between "Time to get Red" and "The Shape of Motion" after giving her hair bone to three baby Lava Dragons. Her eyeslashes were also changed to match her minifigure face print.
- After being touched by the Reversal Time Blade, Wu has become a baby. Throughout the eighth and ninth season, Wu grew from a toddler, child, young teen, teen with mustache and goatee, then got his straw hat, and finally back to his old form. From Secrets of Forbidden Spinjitzu to Crystalized, Wu had a braided ponytail and sideburns before returning to his old appearance prior to Season 1 of Dragons Rising.
- Misako's white streak of hair was absent for The Hands of Time and then appeared again in Season 8 more prominently than previous seasons.
- P.I.X.A.L. originally had the same hairpiece as Tox, but in Season 8 onward, it was changed to a silver variant of Nya's Season 8 hair. In Dragons Rising, P.I.X.A.L.'s face was redesigned.
- Jay, Arin, Sora, Wyldfyre, and Frak are the only ninja to have never died.
- Zane, Kai, Cole, and Lloyd died after being encased in gold by Nadakhan, but were revived after he was hit by the Tiger Widow venom.[21]
- Nya was killed by the Tiger Widow venom in "The Way Back," but was revived as a part of Jay's final wish.
- Lloyd's soul was absorbed by Thunderfang, but was saved when Arin defeated him.
- Jay was the only ninja to appear in every Ninjago episode until "The News Never Sleeps!" and "Never Trust a Human" aired, with Cole and Nya following behind him. But Nya has since made more appearances than Jay, since he only appeared in one episode, and Cole, who appeared in three, in Season 1 of Dragons Rising.

- After the Merge, Nya, Sora, Frak, and Wyldfyre traveled to Djinjago.
- After the Merge, Lloyd, Jay, Nya, Wyldfyre, Arin, and Sora traveled to the Land of Lee.
- Lloyd and Arin were sent to the Whispering Wood, Kai, Jay, and Nya were sent to the Land of Madness, and Sora, Wyldfyre, and Frak were sent to a plains realm after Ras disrupted the portal gates.
- The original four (and Master Wu) have been to the Underworld and First Land.
- Five of the classic ninja have traveled to space.
- After Cole's physical reformation in "Day of the Departed," Zane once again becomes the only biologically non-human on the team. Lloyd is mostly human, but also part Oni and Dragon, because of his ancestry.
- At one point, the Hageman Brothers had an idea to make each ninja have a distinctive physical attribute in addition to their elemental powers, following how Zane was a titanium robot and Cole was a ghost. They were thinking of Jay being a master of disguise and Kai becoming a rock fire lava monster when he got angry. However, they're glad they didn't go with this idea in the end.[22]
- All the ninja have at one point did not wear every different suit shown in the show.
- Kai did not have his Scuba suit due to not going down the Tartarus Trench and his Source Tournament suit due to being trapped in the Nether-Space.
- Jay did not have a Merge suit, Mech suit, Climber suit, Storm suit, or a Spectral suit nor an official Source Tournament due to being in the Administration, then with Ras and then a bounty hunter, making him the first ninja to have any new suits simultaneously.
- His bounty hunting outfit does have similarities to the ninja's Spectral suits however.
- Cole did not have his Prime Empire avatar attire due to not purchasing it and his Scuba suit due to not going down Tartarus Trench.
- Zane did not have his Tournament suit due to being a prisoner of Chen, his Digi-Robe due to not entering Prime Empire, and his Spectral suit, due to travelling with P.I.X.A.L..
- Lloyd only got up to his ZX suit due to being a minor antagonist before joining the ninja.
- Nya only got up to her Deepstone suit due to being Samurai X. She did not have her Prime Empire avatar attire due to not purchasing it, and doesn't have an official Fugitive suit during her brief loss of powers.
- Arin did not have any suits prior to his debut as a ninja, and after that his only suit in common with the other ninja were the Merge suit and Tournament suit. He therefore did not have either a Mech or Climber suit, nor an official Storm suit, nor a Ghost Hunter and Draconus suit.
- He get two suit unique to him reusing his Merge mask and hood while the other ninja were wearing the Storm, Ghost Hunter and Draconus suits.
- Sora did not have any suits prior to her debut as a ninja, did not receive a Mech, Climber and Draconus suit and does not have an official Storm suit.
- Wyldfyre did not have any suits matching the other ninja as she only has one suit she got just before the Tournament of the Sources that she kept as her basic ninja suit.
- Frak did not have any suits prior to his debut as a ninja. Since then, he has worn two suits that didn't match the others'.
- Technically, the classic ninja have the title "Master", as they are all Masters of an element. This was shown in "The Corridor of Elders," when Arcturus identified Lloyd as "Master Lloyd."
- As a ninja, however, Lloyd is the only one who has achieved the rank of Sensei/Master/martial art teacher.
- He started to be called "Master Lloyd" after Wu was lost in time in The Hands of Time until Wu's return in "Green Destiny" (in which Wu himself called him Master Lloyd) and wasn't called that again, until after the Merge when he took Arin and Sora in as students and began to use a Bo staff while Master Wu was missing.
- However, Arin called him "Master Lloyd" after the latter freed him and Sora from a prison train in "The Merge: Part 2" before becoming Lloyd's student, although Lloyd was hesitant about being called a master.
- The Dragon Masters officially granted him the title "Master" before the Tournament of the Sources while Lloyd still didn't feel worthy of this appellation. Lloyd then went to the Tournament as the master of his team and started wearing a Master robe.
- As a ninja, however, Lloyd is the only one who has achieved the rank of Sensei/Master/martial art teacher.
- At some point, all members of the team (and some allies) have turned (or been) against their team and been reverted back (or joined the ninja):
- Garmadon was revived in Sons of Garmadon and became evil again but has since tried to regain his humanity starting from March of the Oni.
- Lloyd was possessed by Morro in Season 5.
- Cole was hypnotized by Skales.
- Nya, Cole, Jay, and Zane were corrupted by Dark Matter (although the last three were only briefly corrupted before Lloyd undid the effects).
- P.I.X.A.L., Cyrus Borg, and Master Wu were controlled by the Overlord.
- Kai was briefly corrupted by the Staff of Elements and nearly attacked Lloyd and Skylor.
- Ronin was forced by Morro to betray the ninja in "The Crooked Path," hired by the police to capture the ninja in "Public Enemy Number One," and terrorized the Keepers in The Island.
- Misako was controlled by Bansha in "Grave Danger" and was corrupted by Dark Matter in the Dark Island Trilogy.
- Nya was possessed by Delara.
- P.I.X.A.L., as Samurai X, was controlled by the Quiet One during Season 8 before Zane killed the spider thus freeing her.
- Wu and Lloyd were briefly corrupted by a Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu.
- Zane's memories were erased by Vex, who manipulates him into being corrupted by the Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu and become the Ice Emperor, started the Long Winter, and held Lloyd hostage. However, Zane regained his memories when Vex said "protect."
- Jay and Kai fought each other after the latter knocked over the former's glass of water in "The Shape of Nya," but halted upon Nya's return.
- Wyldfyre fought Lloyd after being freed from her cell, believing he was an oppressive Imperian, until he saved her from being shot at by the Imperium Guards in "Mindless Beasts."
- Sora reluctantly activated her Photacs to fight for the Claws of Imperium against the ninja, but disabled them while escaping them.
- Kai and Wyldfyre fought over their power differences, only to be stopped by the other ninja in "The Temple of the Dragon Cores."
- Cole attacked Nya, Sora, and Riyu for chasing after Fritz and Spitz in the Land of Lost Things as a golem, but stood down upon recognizing Nya.
- Jay was made manager of realm assignment in The Administration, though after an encounter with Bonzle and Wu, he starts to doubt working for the Administration Agents. He later joined the Wolf Clan under Ras' deception, only to be cast aside for losing to Nya, and eventually became a bounty hunter under the name Rogue, but was brought back to the monastery to heal from injuries inflicted on him, and allied with the Ninja in exchange for Ras' capture before leaving, only to change his mind, and save Kai and Nya.
- Kai, Sora, and Wyldfyre were almost corrupted by the Wolf Clan.
- Frak was a member of the Wolf Clan prior to becoming a ninja, only to be cast aside for losing to Sora.
- Arin followed Ras after finding out the cause of the Merge and promised by the latter that he'd find his parents. However, he rejoined the team after Ras tried to make him throw Sora into the Casket of Bones and he refused.
- Sora chose to go with Arin and Ras following Thunderfang's defeat. However, she rejoined the team after Ras tried to make Arin throw her into the Casket of Bones and the latter refused.
- Although Lloyd is the leader of the team, every ninja of the original team has taken on the role of the leader, specifically, early on in Possession when Lloyd was possessed.
- It was previously assumed that Cole was the leader, but this was initially never officially part of the show.[23] This was referenced in "The Two Blades" when Vania assumed Cole was the leader and in the "LEGO NINJAGO Explained" video when the narrator said "we were led to believe" Cole was the leader. It was previously mentioned in the Hageman Brothers' beat sheet for the pilot episodes[24] and in books such as Cole: Ninja of Earth, Mask of the Sensei, and the first and two Character Encyclopedias. Andreasen also stated that there was no official leader of the team prior to Lloyd, other than Wu.[25] However, this was retconned in "Dying to Live", where Enemy Lloyd stated how Cole was the former team leader.
- Although Nya never received the title of leader (or proclaim herself as such), she often plays this role due to her mature and independent temperament, being the one who often organizes plans, lead the other ninja and takes decisions. Notable examples among others are "The Art of the Silent Fist" or the first scene of "Return to Primeval's Eye" where Nya does not hesitate to take command to lead the other ninja in Lloyd's absence. She also often plays an advisory role for Lloyd (the official leader).[26]
- After Rebooted, the four original ninja could only harness their elemental powers while dependent on their leader, Lloyd, because he shared his Golden Power between them. This was shown when they lost their powers when Morro possessed Lloyd in "Winds of Change."
- However, when Lloyd lost his powers in "Big Trouble, Little Ninjago," the other ninja still had theirs. Tommy Andreasen implied this may have been due to the passage of time and Lloyd's growth causing the ninja's powers to become more independent from him.[27]
- The four original ninja are the only Elemental Masters that have elements of creation.
- Though linked to Golden Power, Lloyd's element (Life/Energy) is not an element of creation and his power of Destruction is an elemental essence.
- Nya, Wyldfyre, and Frak's elements, Water, Heat, and Quake respectively, are not elements of creation.
- Sora's element, Technology, originated during the Merge.
- Lloyd is the only ninja to possess an elemental essence, which is Destruction due to his Oni heritage.
- This makes him the only ninja to control more than one elemental power/essence.
- It is unknown if he possesses the essence of Creation, as he is also part Dragon.
- Kai, Sora and Arin are the only ninja to not have their main color changed.
- Lloyd was green, then gold, but is now green again.
- Jay was blue, before changing to dark blue during his brief affiliation with the Wolf Clan, and later changing back to blue.
- Zane was white, then silver, and now white again.
- Cole was black but alternated between gray and brown whenever the ninja wore predominantly black gi, and he is now black again.
- Nya was red, then maroon, and now alternates between dark gray and azure.
- Wyldfyre was celadon before changing to dark red.
- Frak was black and later changed it to gray.
- Zane, Sora and Frak are the only ninja to not have their secondary or tertiary colors swapped or changed
- Lloyd's first secondary color was gold before swapping to dark green, later changing to light green.
- Kai briefly changed his secondary color from maroon to orange.
- Jay briefly changed his secondary color from dark blue to yellow before changing it to black with yellow as his tertiary color and blue as his quaternary color, due to his brief affiliation with the Wolf Clan before changing it once more to alice or twin bed blue as his secondary color and maroon as his tertiary color, due to becoming a bounty hunter named Rogue, later going back to simply having yellow as his secondary color.
- Cole changed his secondary color from gray, to brown, and is currently orange.
- Nya's color scheme kept changing since she is a ninja: her secondary color was azure (when her main color was dark red and then dark gray) until Season 14 and she had dark blue as a tertiary color in season 5, and dark red in season 7, (when her main color started to be dark gray). In season 14 her secondary color became dark gray (when azure became her main color) and dark red has returned to her tertiary color in season 15. She now alternates between dark red, yellow, or dark blue as a tertiary color.
- Arin's secondary color was a darker shade of orange while his tertiary color was celadon before changing the later to dark blue. He changed his secondary and tertiary color to black and magenta respectively while under Ras's mentorship, and changed it again later to blue and dark orange respectively.
- Wyldfyre's secondary, tertiary, and quaternary colors were dark red, orange, and red in that order before changing her secondary color to celadon, while keeping orange and red as her tertiary and quaternary colors respectively.
- The classic ninja have seasons or TV specials that focus on them.
- Kai was the focus of the pilot episodes, Season 1, Season 4, Season 7 and Monstrosity.
- Jay was the focus of Season 1, Season 6, the Prime Empire Original Shorts, and Season 12.
- Zane was the focus of Season 1 and Season 3.
- Cole was the focus of Season 1, "Day of the Departed", and Season 13.
- Lloyd was the focus of Season 2, Season 8, and Season 15.
- Nya was the focus of Season 7 and Season 14.
- Five of the classic ninja, as well as Wu and Garmadon, have traveled to the past. Kai is the only one who has traveled to the past thrice.
- Garmadon, Kai, Cole, Zane, and Jay went to the past in "Wrong Place, Wrong Time."
- Kai, along with Nadakhan, in "Misfortune Rising".
- Kai, Nya, and Master Wu in "Lost in Time."
- Zane was sent to the Never-Realm, around 60 years into the past in "Vengeance is Mine!".[28]
- Nya and Jay were the only ninja to remember what happened in Season 6, although Lloyd showed signs of experiencing déjà vu, while the rest may have gained some recollection.
- Each of the ninja have their own signature color.
- Kai's signature color is red.
- Jay's signature color changed between blue and dark blue.
- Zane's signature color is white.
- Cole's signature color is black.
- Nya's signature color changed between maroon, azure, and gray.
- Lloyd's signature color is green.
- Arin's signature color is orange.
- Sora's signature color is pink or white.
- Wyldfyre's signature color is red or dark red.
- Frak's signature color is lime green.
- The classic ninja have individual animal symbols that correspond to their characteristics (as of Season 6, depicted on their suits with matching colors and elemental resemblance).
- Kai's is shown as an orange (with red outline) Lion—resembling his aggression.
- Jay's is shown as a dark blue (with purple outline) Octopus—resembling his active nature.
- Zane's is shown as a blue (with white outline) Tiger—resembling his intelligence.
- Cole's is shown as a yellow (with orange outline) Gorilla—resembling his strength.
- Nya's is shown as a white (with light blue outline) Phoenix—resembling her determination.
- Lloyd's is shown as a yellow/gold (with green outline) Dragon—resembling his power (and later revealed to be his ancestry).
- Sora also has an animal symbol. Her symbol is a pink or white cat.
- Frak also has an animal symbol. His symbol is a lime green snake because he is a Serpentine (and the only one on the team).
- The classic ninja have their own signature weapon that they are most known for and later changed their signature weapons to match their movie counterparts (except for Jay), until Season 11.
- Kai's signature weapon was a single katana, then a pair, and now a single golden one.
- Jay's signature weapon was a pair of nunchucks, then a golden kusarigama, and now a pair of daggers that are activated by his Elemental Power.
- Zane's signature weapon switched between shurikens and a bow and arrow, and then back to shurikens.
- Cole's signature weapon was a scythe, then a hammer, and now a golden one.
- Nya's signature weapon was a metal boomerang, then briefly a tessen, then a spear, and now a golden one.
- Lloyd's signature weapon was a pair of katanas, then a gray-silver sword, and now a golden one.
- Zane is the oldest ninja of the team, as he was created forty years ago. Although, as of Season 4, he has a new body, technically making him no longer an "outdated model".
- As of Season 11, Zane is even older than the other ninja after spending decades in the Never-Realm.
- Prior to Arin, Sora, Wyldfyre, and Frak joining the ninja as students, Lloyd was the youngest, though was aged physically to be the same age as his friends.
- However, in Season 6, when Lloyd aged into an old man, he was temporarily physically the oldest ninja of the team before reverting back to a teen.
- Most of the ninja have had a love interest which was another focus in a season.
- Jay and Nya had an attraction to each other in the first two seasons and following a break-up in Season 3, they got back together in Season 6 and remained a couple. They soon Yin-Yang promise in Season 10. They once again broke up in Dragons Rising, Season 2, due to Jay's memory loss and corruption to Shatterspin. Though they are back together by Dragons Rising, Season 3, Jay still has no memory.
- Kai has an interest in Skylor, the daughter of Chen, in Season 4: Tournament of Elements. They officially got together at some point before Quest for the Lost Powers, but their relationship ended at some point before, or because of, the Merge.
- Zane had an interest in P.I.X.A.L. in Season 3 and they remained together until the Merge. As of the third season of Dragons Rising, they are back together.
- Cole was flattered by Nya showing feelings for him during Season 3, which caused a rivalry between him and Jay until the two reconciled their friendship. Cole appears to have feelings for Geo as seen in Season 2 of Ninjago: Dragons Rising when they held hands and smiled at each other.[29][30][31]
- If true, that makes Cole the first confirmed LGBT+ ninja to appear in the series.
- Lloyd had an interest in Harumi in Season 8: Sons of Garmadon, but she was later revealed to be evil. Although she seemed to have only been using him, he seemed saddened when she died in Season 9, going as far as to dig through the rubble to find her body. He was in complete shock when she revealed herself to him in Season 15, before admitting he tried to look for her after Garmadon's defeat. She redeemed herself when she discovered the Overlord was responsible for her parents' death, and gave him a friendly wave at the end of "Roots."
- Wyldfyre had a crush on Roby throughout the second part of Season 2 of Ninjago: Dragons Rising before becoming an official couple in "Elements of Betrayal."
- Frak is shown to have a crush on Sora throughout Season 3 of Ninjago: Dragons Rising.
- From Season 8 to Season 10, the original 6 had their names and signature colors on their weapons. As of Season 11, their weapons are now gold and just have their signature colors.
- Except for Arin, who does not possess an Elemental Power, all of the ninja have lost their powers at one point, or were unable to control them, and regained them.
- After the events of "Day of the Great Devourer", the four original ninja lost their Golden Weapons and were rendered powerless until they were powered-up at the Temple of Light in "Island of Darkness".
- After The Final Battle, the original four were rendered powerless again until "Codename: Arcturus".

- The four original ninja lost their powers again throughout Possession when Morro possessed Lloyd until "Grave Danger".
- Lloyd was rendered powerless in "True Potential" up until the end of his fight (or lack thereof) with Garmadon in "Green Destiny".
- This makes Lloyd the first ninja to solely lose their powers.
- Kai lost his elemental Fire to Aspheera in "Boobytraps and How to Survive Them" but regained them in a weak state in "Fire Maker" before eventually fully regaining them during "Awakenings."
- After "The Turn of the Tide" Nya was drained of her Water so she could revert to her human form in "A Painful Promise", but regained them in a weak state in "Quittin' Time!" before eventually fully regained them sometime after Crystalized and before The Merge.
- During the final prophecy of Quanish the Elder, the four original ninja united the reforged Golden Weapons and freed the elemental powers in them, which in turn resulted in the emergence of the Golden Ultra Dragon and ultimately defeated the Overlord, but left the four powerless in the process. They eventually regained their powers during the events of Quest for the Lost Powers.
- Except Kai, all of the ninja steadily gave their powers to the Elemental Cup throughout Tournament of the Sources and regained them in "Elements of Betrayal."
- All of the ninja's powers were left unstable when half of the Council of Sources left.

- The classic ninja's future reflections, apart from Cole and Lloyd, are shown in the ice labyrinth in Season 5. While it would seem the cast's change in appearance after the movie means these visions are no longer accurate, Tommy Andreasen has implied they may still look like this in the future.
- When asked about how the future reflections didn't seem to compare to the Season 8 designs, he replied "That reflection is like 50 years into the future … season 8 is not."[36]
- When someone said that the timeline was altered by Wu in Season 7, he said "No he didn't. We did a design update. Shows do that and we will do so again sometime."[37]
- Whatever may happen in-universe, the appearances of the ninja will most likely not revert to their original designs within the show itself.[38]
- Cole is the only classic ninja whose future or older self has not been seen, as everyone but he and Lloyd had future reflections in the ice labyrinth, while Lloyd temporarily became an old man in the second half of Skybound.
- Chris "Doc" Wyatt has confirmed that Cole's reflection is canon and will be seen later.[39]
- Some of the ninja get more of a spotlight in the sets than others:
- After the 2019 Legacy spinners, Kai has appeared in all eight collectible set series (Spinjitzu Slam, Arcade Pods, Spinjitzu Burst, Epic Battles, Spinjitzu Training, Dragon Power, and Rising Dragon, and Dragon Spinjitzu), Lloyd has appeared in five, Jay has appeared in three, Zane, Cole, Nya, and Arin have appeared in two, and Sora has appeared in one.
- Tommy Andreasen does not think whether the ninja have different heights or not is relevant to the story.[40][41] He later said that their heights are "Average".[42]
- An image by PenPlays on X show in a police line up of the classic ninja, sans Nya, that they appear to be around 6' 5".[43]
- Cole, Sora, and Frak are the only ninja who have not been shown to cry or shed a tear at any point.
- Zane shed a tear when he regained the memory of his father's last moments in "Tick Tock"
- Jay shed a tear of happiness in "Home," cried while cradling Nya's body in "The Way Back," cried as he watched Nya enter the Endless Sea in "The Turn of the Tide," and shedded tears after regaining his memory.
- Lloyd shed tears after the Colossus crushed the Destiny's Bounty in "Big Trouble, Little Ninjago," believing Kai, Jay, Zane, Cole, and Wu were killed, and when assumed they were dead in "The Spider's Design"
- Nya cried after Cole fell into the Oni cloud in "The Fall" and continued in "Endings," and sheds a tear while mouthing her love for Jay in "Nyad."
- Arin cried upon learning his parents were seemingly dead in "I Alone Can Save Them", after escaping the Underworld upon realizing he'll never get to see his parents in "Casket of Bones" and when he hugged his parents after being finally reunited with them in "Under the Light of a Mechanical Moon".
- Wyldfyre shed tears during Egalt's passing.
- Kai shed tears after seeing Master Wu in the Land of Monsters.
- The ninja have distinctive eyebrows in order to easily identify them when they have their masks on.[44]
- However, when wearing their black suits in Crystalized, they were unable to distinguish themselves from one another.
- Wyldfyre is the only one that hasn't worn a mask.
- The ninja's names were chosen "Quite carefully ... and with legal checks to avoid any infringements."[45]
- The classic ninja had at least one episode where the ninja learns secrets about one or both of their parents.
- Zane remembers his father in "Tick Tock" and learns he is alive and reunites with him in "The Last Voyage."
- Garmadon tells Lloyd about his past in the Serpentine War in "Spellbound."
- Jay learns he was adopted and his father was Cliff Gordon in "Misfortune Rising."
- Kai and Nya find their parents and learn why they disappeared in "Pause and Effect."
- Cole learns about his mother unlocking the Spinjitzu Burst in "Masters Never Quit."
- Except Frak, the new ninja either lost their parents or had bad relationships with them.
- Arin lost his parents to the Merge in "The Merge: Part 1," briefly saw them in a MergeQuake rift in "The Power Within," sees them in a vision where he fears they gave up on him finding them in "Beyond the Phantasm Cave," and ultimately abandons the ninja to join Ras, believing the latter will help bring them back, only to discover they were dead in "I Alone Can Save Them", unaware that Jay told the ninja that they're alive. He eventually reunites with them in "The Screaming Earth", and wanted to leave the ninja to remain with them, but changed his mind and wanted to take a vacation with them before deciding.
- Sora ran away from her parents when they refuse to acknowledge her technology skills and her opposing misuse of dragon power, which is seen in a flashback in "Return to Imperium," and briefly reunited with them before disowning them in "The Power Within" upon seeing them continue their loyalties to Beatrix.
- Wyldfyre's biological parents were never mentioned as she grew up in the Wyldness.
- But according to Chris "Doc" Wyatt, "Wyldfyre's parent is a dragon. Biology doesn't determine parentage".[46]
- Frak's relationship with his parents is currently unknown, except the fact that he took a photo of them with him in the Tournament of the Sources.
- Although originally the ninja used pajamas often during sleep, in newer seasons they are already sleeping in their gi, due to simpler animation because of modest budget (or in-universe because it allows them to leap into action more quickly).[47]
- Tommy Andreasen has stated that he believes any of the ninja could turn evil given the right set of circumstances.[48]
- According to Tommy Andreasen, if the ninja had YouTube channels, Jay would make game videos, Kai would give bad dating tips, Nya would make self-improvement videos, Cole would do "the joys of cake," and Zane would make Brent Miller parody videos.[49]
- In Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu, Master of the Mountain, The Island, and Crystalized, the story of the ninja starts in the Monastery of Spinjitzu. According to Tommy Andreasen, it's because "We like our beloved characters to rest a bit. Who would deny them that after all their hard work?"[50]
- The ninja do not have official birthdays. However, Jay and Lloyd's birthdays seem to take place not long after The Hands of Time, since within the season, they both received early birthday gifts but did not celebrate their birthdays.[51][52]
- In Ninjargon, "ninja" means one who protects.[53]
- During "Stiix and Stones," Cole, Kai, Jay and Zane had a total of less than two hundred in cash. At present, however, their assets are unknown.
- At one point, the ninja separated, but reunited or remain separated.
- Zane inadvertently left the team when his original body was destroyed before rebuilding himself and came back after the Tournament of Elements.
- Kai, Jay, and Cole left the team after Zane's assumed death before being brought back together by Lloyd, which led to the Tournament of Elements.
- Nya left the team after merging with the Endless Sea before being removed of her powers by Aspheera, and later regained them.
- Kai, Jay, and Lloyd left after Nya's departure before returning upon seeing the Candlelight vigil for Nya.
- Kai, Jay, Zane, Cole, and Nya left the team, due to the Merge. Only Kai, Zane, and Nya returned during the quest to prevent the MergeQuakes. Cole periodically returns, balancing his time between the ninja and his commitments with the Finders. Jay stayed at the Administration, until he was recruited by the Wolf Clan before being casted aside after losing in the Tournament of the Sources, later becoming a bounty hunter before eventually being brought back to the monastery to heal from inflicted injuries and was hired by Lloyd to find Arin's parents before briefly leaving, but changed his mind.
- Kai left the team, due to being trapped in the Nether-Space, but returned upon Nya opening the portal.
- Wyldfyre briefly left the team to vent some anger over losing Kai, but came back after reuniting three baby Lava Dragons with their mother.
- Arin left the team upon being deceived by Ras and nursed him back to health and briefly fought alongside them against Thunderfang before eventually rejoining Ras to find a way to bring his parents back. He returns to them upon learning Ras attempted to use Sora as a sacrifice for the Casket of Bones and reuniting with his parents, but intends to leave the team again.
- Sora left the team to join Arin and Ras in bringing back Arin's parents. She returns to them upon learning Ras attempted to use her as a sacrifice for the Casket of Bones.
- The new ninja (Arin, Sora, Wyldfyre, and Frak) are the only ones to not have a criminal record.
- Nya had one as well, although it was erased by Jay's final wish.
- When asked where the ninja take money, Tommy Andreasen replied, "We can say they are funded by Borg if that eases you."[54] and "The[y] have a 'Kick-back-Whip-Around-And-Spin-Starter' w[h]ere people can donate."[55]
- P.I.X.A.L. is the only official member of the team who is not a ninja, yet have ninja abilities.
- In Riyu's case, he was training to be a ninja to obtain such skills like the ninja team, practicing Spinjitzu under Rontu's guidance until manage to perform it.
- Arin, P.I.X.A.L. and Riyu are the only members of the team to not harness an Elemental Power.
- Wyldfyre and P.I.X.A.L. are the only members of the team who do not know Spinjitzu or any form of it.
- Wyldfyre and Frak are the only Elemental Masters of the team who have not yet reached their True Potential.[56]
- Apart from Nya, who wasn't a ninja at the time, the ninja did not have their hair pieces in the sets until 2014 in the Rebooted wave as part of their Techno gi designs, even though their hair was seen in the TV series (even more than their masked appearances) since 2011. Before that, Jay, Cole, and Zane's hairpieces existed in other LEGO themes, while both of Lloyd's existed but not in blond, and Kai's did not exist at all, as it was designed by WILFilm for the show.[57] Young Lloyd's hair did not physically exist until it was released in 71741 Ninjago City Gardens, almost nine years after its first appearance in the show in "Never Trust a Snake."
- The Hageman Brothers' names for the ninja in the first beat sheet for the pilot were Ash, Wynn, Rayne, and Cole, puns on ash, wind, rain, and coal.[24]
- According to Lloyd, each of the classic ninja can feel their powers through different parts of the body.
- Cole feels Earth in his guts.[58]
- Zane senses Ice in his mind.[58]
- Nya feels Water through her veins.[58]
- The ninja at one point or another had different topics they feared the most.
- Kai is afraid of water.
- Kai's fear of water vanished once his powers returned as shown in scenes from Skybound, The Hands of Time, Sons of Garmadon, The Island, and Seabound where he is near or submerged in water but isn't shown to be scared anymore.
- Jay is afraid of attics.
- Cole was afraid of dragons, until he befriended Rocky, his fear shifted to Serpentine until they made peace, his fear shifted to ghosts until he got used to being one.
- Zane feared he would lose his humanity.
- Lloyd was afraid of heights before conquering it to summon his Elemental Dragon, feared of becoming his father, though he possibly got past it after reconciling with the latter at the end of Crystalized. His fear shifted to failing Wu.
- Nya feared of becoming normal, losing her friends, and Jay treating her like a complete stranger.
- Arin feared that his parents would be disappointed in him and blamed him for having replaced them by a new family.
- Sora feared being confronted again with Beatrix and Ras.
- Wyldfyre was afraid of heights until she conquered it in order to rescue Roby from falling and feared that Heatwave gets the Wasting Sickness.[62]
- Frak is afraid of giant puppets.
- Zane, Lloyd, and Nya had their fears revealed in the Mirror of Dread, and all of them came true in Crystalized in some capacity; Zane switched off his emotion until "The Benefit of Grief", Lloyd became like his father as he transformed into his Oni Form in "Roots" until getting scared of his reflection, and Nya was left without powers until "Quittin' Time!"
- Kai is afraid of water.
- According to earlier concepts and tweets, Jay was originally stated to be the Green Ninja.
- The 10 ninja have never been together in the same place, nor have they all participated in the same event as the tenth member, Frak, joined the team between Season 2 and Season 3 of Dragons Rising, and an original member, Jay, reunited with the ninja in the middle of Season 3, but by then, Arin and Sora left to join Ras. When they came back, the Ninja were divided into several groups and ended up scattered across the Merged Realms.
- Kai was the only absent ninja during the Tournament of the Sources.
- Cole was the only absent ninja during the battle against Thunderfang.
- All the ninja, as well as Riyu and excluding Jay, have seen or interacted with Source Dragons in some capacity.
- Lloyd, Zane and Riyu met the Source Dragon of Energy during his imprisonment in Imperium in "The Battle of the Second Monastery", resulting in Lloyd becoming a conduit. Lloyd and Riyu would once again interact with him in "The Power Within", with Lloyd setting the source dragon free.
- As a conduit, Lloyd was transported to the Source Dragon's void in "Beyond the Phantasm Cave" after asking for aid. He received a vision of guidance as result.
- In "The Shape of Motion", Lloyd, Nya, Arin, Sora, Wyldfyre and Riyu all met the Source Dragon of Motion, who tasked the ninja with discovering the identity of the Mountain Matriarch's killers by competing in the Tournament of the Sources.
- In "Clues and Suspects", the Source Dragon of Motion encouraged Lloyd to keep fighting. She would later appear to him in "Elements of Betrayal", congratulating him and the ninja for their success and even giving him a dragon icon as a gift.
- In "Casket of Bones", Lloyd inadvertently had a vision which teleported him to the Source Dragon's void, allowing him to overhear their discourse.
- Kai, Cole and Frak managed to unearth the sentient corpse of the deceased Source Dragon of Balance and witnessed it in wonder before it disappeared in "The Screaming Earth".

- ↑ The word "ninja" is not treated as a proper name when Wu refers to the team in his writing in the Dark Island Trilogy and The Book of Spinjitzu or when it is written in books such as Legend of the Brown Ninja and Pythor's Revenge. However, it is written in uppercase as "Ninja" on several other occasions, such as in earlier books and on LEGO.com. Official episode descriptions for the series have written the word both ways.
