Snakes in the Grass[]

Kai hears a strange sound in the middle of the night and wakes up. He grabs the Sword of Fire in case the Fangpyre have infiltrated the camp and peers into the darkness. Sensei Wu approaches him, taking his usual nighttime stroll. Kai calms down at first, but then notices that the sensei is hissing and his skin is covered in scales. The red ninja realizes that the master has been bitten by a snake. He tries to fight it off with his sword and then calls for help from his team. The ninja who arrive are also covered in scales and speak in a hissing sound. Nya, who had also been bitten by the Fangpyre, joins them. Together, the snake people begin to assure Kai that they are now stronger, that they no longer need to fight for justice, and that the fire ninja should join them. Kai blinds his friends with fire and runs towards the nearest village for help. However, all the villagers there have also been transformed into snakes. Suddenly, the red ninja opens his eyes, truly awake. He notices his teammates standing next to him, looking normal. Kai tells them about the bad dream and declares that they must deal with the Fangpyre once and for all, lest the nightmare become reality.

Keys to Victory[]

Kai and Jay are battling the Golden Weapons in their training suits. Then they see Nya training nearby and try to figure out why she's doing it. Nya explains that she plans to become a ninja, despite the boys' ridicule. Their conversation is interrupted by Cole and Zane, who report on the Fangpyre, whom the villagers have spotted in the mountains. Zane explains that the journey will be difficult and dangerous, and Jay responds by showing off his latest creation: four shiny motorcycles emblazoned with ninja symbols. Nya, displeased that the blue ninja hasn't made a fifth motorcycle for her, turns around and leaves. The heroes decide to start searching in the morning.

Jay stays by the campfire that night, thinking about his fight with Nya. He's so lost in his thoughts that he doesn't notice one of the Fangpyre snakes infiltrating the camp. The next day, the ninja climb onto their new motorcycles and attempt to start them, only to discover that the vehicles have transformed into snakes. The snake motorcycles attempt to consume the team, and the heroes are unable to stop them, as Jay used materials too strong for them. Just as Jay is losing hope and preparing for his end, Nya appears. She leaps over the motorcycles, causing them to topple over. When the ninja ask Nya what she did, she reveals the ignition keys she managed to retrieve from the motorcycles during the jump. She then explains that she spotted a Serpentine that had snuck into the camp the night before and followed it, thus discovering the location of one of the snake hideouts.

Trivia[]

• Both stories take place after the episode "Snakebit," as the Fangpyre had already been freed.
• Based on the illustrations in the book, both stories must take place before the episode "The Snake King," as the ninja had not yet received their ZX suits.
• Before the events of the story, Kai had seen Nya training many times.
