After Nya and her mother were captured by Kalmaar, the foul king of Merlopia orders for the two to be thrown into a cell. In between comments about his hatred of surface dwellers, Kalmaar orders Gripe and Glutinous to be prepared to sink more of the surface dwellers' ships in retribution for this trespass. In response, Glutinous revealed that he had developed a new machine capable of generating vortexes powerful enough to pull entire vessels from the surface down into the depths.
Elsewhere, in Tartarus Trench, the rest of the Ninja wait for their allies aboard the powerless Hydro Bounty. As they discussed Nya and Maya's absence, Jay suggested that both mother and daughter could take as long as they needed so that the rest of the sunken ninja could enjoy a bit of respite. Lloyd was wary of this suggestion however, reminding Jay that they had just been attacked by a Manta ray, and there was always the possibility it could return for another pass.
Meanwhile, above the surface of the Endless Sea, a fishing vessel is passing by, unaware of the danger it would soon find itself in. Below the surface, Glutinous and his Maaray Guards prepare to test the mad scientist's latest invention, the Maelstrom Generator. With the flick of a switch, a powerful whirlpool forms beneath the fishing vessel, dragging it below the depths as the crew flees into their lifeboat. Pleased by this successful test of his invention, Glutinous begins to cackle with laughter.
Back aboard the Hydro Bounty, the sunken ninja detect a nearby disturbance: a fishing vessel that has just settled atop the sandy sea bottom of the trench. P.I.X.A.L. viewed this new arrival as a good thing, suggesting that the Ninja could venture out in the APS suits to scavenge for parts needed to make crucial repairs to the Hydro Bounty. Before they could deploy, however, the Bounty's scanners detected the presence of a nearby platoon of Manta rays ridden by Maaray Guards, all of whom were heading to the same shipwreck. In order to avoid detection, Lloyd activated the Hydro Bounty's camouflage feature and the ship promptly disguised itself as a giant whale.
Observing the Maaray Guards swim over to and begin scavenging the sunken ship, the ninja discussed amongst themselves as to who these curious beings were. Although Jay suggested they could be a new tribe of Serpentine, P.I.X.A.L. corrected him and suggested that they were more likely a group of humanoid eels; nevertheless, the only concrete thing they could determine from observations alone was that they were almost certainly responsible for sinking the fishing vessel. As the discussion continued, Lloyd felt his blood boiling; he hated the idea of sitting still while those who were responsible for the sinking of so many ships continued to roam free. Determined to put a stop to the Maaray Guards, Lloyd and Zane made their way to the APS Suits to prepare for underwater combat. As they suited up, P.I.X.A.L. briefed them about a series of underwater vents, suggesting that since they all seemed connected, if they could plug up all of the active ones, the smoke being released would instead be redirected and expelled through the inactive vents, striking at the Maaray Guards. At this moment, Jay began to panic, alerting the others that the Guards had since completed looting and were now heading straight towards the disguised Hydro Bounty!
Following P.I.X.A.L.'s suggestion, Lloyd and Zane began sealing off the active underwater vents. As expected, with the vents unable to expel their smoke, it instead built up and moved through the underground chambers before rising up again, directly under the Maaray Guards! Disoriented and surprised by the sudden plumes of smoke, the Guards decided to break off their advance and retreated. Afterwards, Zane and Lloyd returned to the Hydro Bounty for debriefing. Jay declared that they all couldn't just keep sitting around to wait for Nya and Maya to return; they were going to start looking for the pair instead if they had to!
