The Chroma's Clutches (flashback)[]
Long ago, Mindaro painted Jelena and her magic forest, bringing both to life through the use of his magic. Mindaro's daughters, Indi and Peri would spend countless hours in front of Jelena's painting as they grew up, watching the magical deer frolic and play in her forest. Jelena however, longed to cross over into the real world and at one point voiced this desire to Mindaro, who then began to experiment with smaller beings first, creating and bringing Balee into the real world.
Following the death of Violet, Mindaro's wife, and Mindaro's subsequent depression and imprisonment inside of one of his paintings, Peri conscripted Jelena to assist her in guiding warriors that she would transport into the paintings in an effort to defeat the Chroma. For the next three years, however, all of these warriors would fail.
Three years later, Jelena met with the latest warriors forcibly conscripted by Peri, this time a pair of brothers named Wu and Garmadon. Jelena related Peri's story to the brothers and apologized for her behavior, insisting that Peri was not wicked at heart, but rather had become increasingly desperate as the years wore on. She then expressed her belief that the brothers could finally be the ones who could defeat the Chroma, for Peri had been impressed by the pair's ninja skills. With the brothers agreeing to take on the challenge that awaited them, Jelena guided the pair across multiple paintings before finally reaching the Chroma painting.
Following the Chroma's destruction, Jelena entered the painting for the first time, expressing a desire to explore this new, lush landscape, having since decided to stay in the world of paint rather than crossing over to the real world as she had initially desired.
Centuries later, Jelena remained present in the Chroma painting as it hung in the Ninjago Museum of History.
