Background[]
Mindaro was a renowned magician and painter who discovered that he could channel his magic into his paintings to bring them to life. With his works, Mindaro sought to capture and preserve the natural beauty of Ninjago, which he felt was slowly fading away with each passing day. Following the passing of his wife, Violet, however, the tone of Mindaro's works notably took a turn. Gone were the vibrant and beautiful landscapes, the fantastical, mythical creatures, and most notably, gone were all the striking colors he had been known for. In their place, Mindaro now only painted bleak, desolate scenes of empty words in monochromatic hues to express his sadness. Unfortunately, Mindaro's magic, intermixed with his grief, led to the creation of a monster known as the The Chroma, which then absorbed him and his youngest daughter, Indi, into its portrait.
For the next three years, Mindaro's eldest daughter, Peri, who had escaped the clutches of the Chroma, discovered a way to transport other people and beings into her father's paintings and began to desperately lure warriors to the villa to transport into the paintings in an effort to destroy the Chroma and free her family.
The Chroma's Clutches (flashback)[]
Having been invited to Peri's villa, two traveling brothers, Wu and Garmadon, briefly admired the many portraits that adorned the villa's halls. During their visit, Garmadon noted he the ducks in one portrait were moving, though Peri only stated in reply that her father's skill was so great that his works seemed realistic to the point they were life like, and this is what he had made him so renowned as an artist.
After asking the brothers to later pose for her for a portrait, Peri secretly used her magic to transport them into her father's paintings, bringing them first into Jelena's magical forest. The brothers would then follow Jelena as they crossed over the many paintings in the villa, including but not limited to the first drawing Peri made as a child, a portrait of butterflies, a ship caught in a stormy sea, and finally, the Chroma's bleak and desolate wasteland. There, the brothers fought their way through the Chroma's army of Grays before meeting Mindaro and Indi and developing a plan to destroy the Chroma through the use of color. After contacting Peri, the latter began to add colorful flowers to the Chroma's otherwise monochromatic portrait, enabling Mindaro and the brothers to use the bright colors to destroy the Chroma and transform its once bleak landscape into a lush paradise complete with a wide rainbow stretching across an endless blue sky. With the Chroma no more, Mindaro was able to lower the protective spell he had casted, allowing himself, Indi, the brothers, and all others Peri had transported in the past to finally step forth once more into the real world.
Centuries later, the Chroma's painting would be acquired and displayed by the Ninjago Museum of History, surprising Wu and his Ninja as they gazed upon the beautiful painted landscape. Wu however, seemed more cautious, carefully studying the painting before finally turning away, unaware that a gray cloud now appeared in the portrait's sunny blue sky...
