At some point in time, Indi was born to Mindaro, a magician renowned for his paintings, and Violet. Indi's life growing up was said to have been one filled with happiness and delight, living with her parents and older sister in their villa at the top of a lush mountain. Indi's father would often use his magic to bring his painted creations to life to delight his family, with one such painting being that of a deer named Jelena.
One day however, Indi and Peri's mother, Violet, suddenly fell ill and her illness progressively worsened until she died not long after. Following her mother's death, Indi could do nothing but watch as her father grew increasingly withdrawn and despondent, all joy and life having left him in his grief. Indi and Peri attempted to encourage their father to pick up painting again as a way to overcome his sorrow, and while he picked up the brush once more, his heart was never the same. Gone were the vibrant colors and the beautiful landscapes he had been well known for. In their place he now painted only cold, bleak, and gray wastelands of sorrow. Unfortunately, Mindaro's grief, combined with his magic, would take life in the form of a monster known as The Chroma. The Chroma, desiring to cross over into the real world, attacked Mindaro and absorbed him into its painted wasteland. Indi, in an effort to help her father, found herself being absorbed into the painting as well. There, she and her father stayed trapped for the next three years, losing hope as time passed and more and more brave warriors sent by Peri into the painting failed to defeat the Chroma.
The Chroma's Clutches (flashback)[]
Three years later, two Ninja, Wu and his brother, Garmadon, were transported into the Chroma's painting by Peri in an effort to defeat the Chroma. As the brothers sought shelter from the monster, Indi spotted the pair and guided them to the cave where she and her father had hid in for the last three years. There, Indi explained to the brothers their current state of affairs, apologizing on behalf of Peri for transporting them into the painting against their will. Fortunately, these new warriors were able to restore a spark of hope into Indi, who then convinced her father to assist in a plan that could actually destroy the Chroma once and for all. Indi, her father, and the two brothers then fought their way to the front of the painting to reach out to Peri. While Indi called upon her sister to add splashes of color into the gray painting, the girls' father used his magic to manipulate the colors so that Wu and Garmadon could use their Spinjitzu to drench the Chroma with color. Fortunately, their plan succeeded and the Chroma was destroyed.
With the threat now vanquished, a grateful Indi, alongside everyone else trapped within the painting, were finally able to step out into the real world once more after so many years.
