Background[]

As magician and an acclaimed painter, Mindaro discovered that he could channel his magic into his paintings to bring them to life, giving them an extra spark of realism. A gentle man, Mindaro sought only to use his work to entertain and delight others, as well as preserve the natural beauty of Ninjago, which he feared was disappearing every passing day. At one point in time, Mindaro married Violet, fathering two daughters: Periwinkle (Peri), their oldest, and Indigo (Indi). The family then moved to the top of a lush mountain, where Mindaro continued his works, creating beautiful landscapes and mythical creatures.

One day, one of Mindaro's creations, a magical deer named Jelena, expressed a desire to join Mindaro's family in the real world. Mindaro considered Jelena's request and began to experiment with smaller beings born from paint, creating and bringing Balee into the physical world. One day after however, Violet suddenly took ill and died not long after, filling Mindaro with despair, blaming himself for being unable to save his wife.

After his wife's passing, Mindaro became increasingly despondent, much to the distress of his daughters. They would suggest to their father to pick up his brush once more, hoping that it would alleviate some of his grief. Although Mindaro tried, the passion and spirit he had once felt was gone. Gone from his paintings were the bright colors, the cheerful landscapes, and fantastical creatures. In their place, he now only painted desolate scenes in shades of black, white, and gray to emphasize his sadness and grief. Unfortunately, Mindaro's magic mixed in with his negative emotions and paint, manifesting itself in the form of a beast that would become known as The Chroma. Desiring to enter the real world, the Chroma attacked Mindaro and absorbed him into its painting alongside Indi when she attempted to rescue her father. From within the painting, Mindaro used his magic to weave a protection spell, preventing the Chroma and anyone else within his paintings from ever escaping. There, he and Indi would remain trapped for the next three years.

The Chroma's Clutches (flashback)[]

One day, after three long years spent maintaining the protective spell, Mindaro and Indi met two brothers - the latest warriors transported by Peri into the Chroma's painting in an effort to defeat the titular beast. Although the brothers expressed a belief that the monster could be vanquished through the use of color, Mindaro felt such efforts were hopeless as all the color he and Indi had brought with them three years ago had already long be used to create the torches lining the walls of their cave.

Indi however, managed to persuade her father into at least giving the brothers' plan a try; after all, it was the first real hope they have had in three years. Reluctantly, Mindaro agreed, with himself and Indi making their way to the front of the painting to contact Peri while the brothers held back the Chroma's army of Grays. After Peri hastily painted several colorful flowers into the Chroma's painting, Mindaro attempted to use his magic to manipulate the colors, but to no avail. Falling onto his knees, Mindaro lamented that it was no use; his magic was too weak and all he could do now was to raise the barrier again so the Chroma could not escape. Peri however, encouraged her father, painting a small violet before him as she reminded him that Violet, her mother and Mindaro's late wife, always had faith in him, just as she still did now.

With his hope reinvigorated, Mindaro rose once more and used his magic to gather together all the colors added by Peri, enabling the brothers to use the bright colors to defeat the Chroma. Once the threat had been vanquished, Mindaro was able to safely open the way out from the painting, allowing himself, Indi, the brothers, and all who had been trapped to finally step back into the real world for the first time in years. Reunited with his family, Mindaro thanked the brothers and later watched as they left to continue their journey.
