The Chroma's Clutches (flashback)[]

Following the sudden death of his wife, Mindaro became despondent and overtaken with grief. When his young daughters, Peri and Indi encouraged him to pick up his brush once more, Mindaro did so with great reluctance. Where he had once been known for creating wonders of nature, beautiful landscapes, and fantastical creatures, Mindaro's newest work however was a desolate and bleak landscape, painted exclusively in monochrome to reflect his sadness and pain. Unfortunately, Mindaro was no ordinary painter; as a magician, his paintings were influenced by his magic and this one was no exception. Brought to life by Mindaro's magic intermixing with the intense sorrow and pain he felt in his heart, the painting manifested the embodiment of his grief int he form of a monster known as The Chroma.

Seeking to cross into the real world, the Chroma attacked Mindaro, pulling him into its painting alongside Indi as she attempted to help her father. While trapped within the artwork, Mindaro used his magic to create a protective seal over all of his paintings, thus preventing anyone within the paintings, including himself and his daughter, from ever escaping as long as he maintained the seal. And for the next three years, Mindaro and his daughter would remain trapped as Peri, Mindaro's eldest daughter, began to desperately transport various warriors into the Chroma painting in an effort to vanquish the beast, with all failing so far.

Three years later, Wu and Garmadon were transported into Mindaro's paintings by Peri and made their way to the Chroma painting, having been determined to prevail against the creature. After meeting up with Mindaro and Indi, the brothers realized that the gray creature's natural weakness was color, and so they formulated a plan for Peri to add splashes of color to the monochromatic painting so that the brothers could use them to destroy the beast. Fortunately, the plan worked, and with the destruction of the Chroma, the entire painting itself was transformed. Where was once desolate, gray terrain was now a lush, green paradise with blue skies and a glittering rainbow overhead. With the Chroma vanquished, all those imprisoned inside the painting were finally able to safely escape and the painting continued to hang in Mindaro's family's villa for countless years.

Many years later however, long after Mindaro and his daughters' deaths, the painting would be acquired by the Ninjago Museum of History and was displayed in one of the rooms when Wu and the Ninja were called in response to a suspected jewel thief. Cole spotted the painting hanging on the wall and Nya excitedly recognized it as the transformed Chroma painting. Wu however, exhibited a note of caution, almost as if he didn't trust the demise of the gray creature despite having witnessed it first hand centuries ago. Finally believing that the painting no longer posed a threat, Wu turned his back and left, unaware that a dark cloud had suddenly appeared across the painting's blue sky...

Trivia[]

  • Judging by Wu's hesitation upon seeing the painting again in the Ninjago Museum of History in spite of having personally witnessed the Chroma's destruction, it is possible there is more to the story surrounding the painting than he had told the Ninja.
