The Chroma

Overview

“As he painted, his grief and anger overtook him. His magic was so powerful that storm clouds appeared in the sky over the mountain. Peri and Indi begged him to stop, but Mindaro kept painting, as though some mighty force had overtaken him. His creation took the form of a monster, a huge monster with no color or joy.”
Jelena

The Chroma was one of Mindaro's creations. Overcome by grief, Mindaro inadvertently created the Chroma, which took the form of a giant monster and tried to take over the real world, but was trapped by Mindaro in one of his paintings.

Background[]

As a way to cheer Mindaro up after Violet's death, Peri and Indi insisted him on making a painting. Mindaro reluctantly agreed, but instead of using bright colors like he always does, he instead painted the painting in only gray, black, and white, as the colors represented his sadness. But as he painted, his grief began to overtake him, and a huge storm appeared. This as a result led to Mindaro's creation taking form as the Chroma.

From the moment of its creation, the Chroma aspired to cross over into the real world, attacking its creator and dragging him, as well as Indi, into its portrait. Unfortunately, this action soon proved to be detrimental to the monster's goals, as from within, Mindaro cast a spell that prevented anything, or anyone, inside the portrait from ever leaving as long as he maintained the spell every day. For the next three years, the Chroma bided its time, waiting for any opportunity to escape from its portrait turned prison, defeating any warrior foolish enough to challenge it in the meanwhile.

The Chroma's Clutches (flashback)[]

Three years after its imprisonment, the Chroma came across the latest warriors who had been sent to vanquish it: a pair of brothers, Wu and Garmadon. Although the Chroma was unable to affect Wu, it was able to prey on Garmadon's growing insecurities and fear, speaking inside of the boy's head as it taunted him. "All is lost. There is no point in continuing your journey because nothing will change. Nothing will change, you are who you are, Garmadon." it said, leaving the boy frozen in fear. As the Chroma bore down on the brothers, intent on consuming them like it had all those who had failed before, Wu however managed to snap his brother awake from the Chroma's influence and the two were able to escape its clutches.

Later, having sensed that the protective spell was brought down, the Chroma began to make its way to the front of its painting to escape. As it neared its escape, the Chroma briefly spoke in Garmadon's mind again, this time angering the boy who ran up to the beast and declared, "You're wrong, Chroma!" As the Chroma now bore over its enemies, it opened its massive mouth to swallow them all, but suddenly the brothers used their Spinjitzu to hurl splatters of color against the gray monster's body. Wailing and shrieking, the Chroma writhed as the colors began to alter its body, eventually exploding as a bright rainbow took its place in the sky, ending the threat of Chroma...or so it seemed.

Trivia

Trivia[]

  • It shares its name with a Keystone in LEGO Dimensions, which allows players to coat their characters with three main colors: blue, red and yellow to match color patterns and solve puzzles.
  • Judging by Wu's hesitant reaction upon seeing the Chroma's painting in the present day and his careful studying of the painting, it is possible that the Chroma survived its destruction and had another encounter with Wu sometime after the events of The Chroma's Clutches.
    • This is further hinted at in the end of the book, where, after Wu dismisses the painting as no longer being a threat, a dark cloud not unlike the Chroma's form, suddenly appears in the otherwise bright blue sky of the painting.
