Spinjitzu Surprise! is the 1st issue of Ninjago XXL Magazine. It includes 30530 WU-CRU Target Training and Resistance Lloyd and Jay appear on the cover. It was released on September 13, 2018.

At the Monastery of Spinjitzu, the ninja are practicing their aim, hurling Shurikens at a target as they hone their skills. Today however, Lloyd seems distracted while the other ninja each score bullseyes without a second thought! As Lloyd bemoans his accuracy and questions if he can defeat the Sons of Garmadon like this, Nya comforts him and reminds him that everyone has good days and bad days; besides, she notes, when the time comes, surely his aim will not be off the mark! Lloyd takes Nya's encouragement with skepticism, however, only responding that they can only hope she was right or their next mission may not go so well. At that moment, Zane alerted the others that he had detected three bikers fleeing a crime in progress, with each fleeing in a different direction.
Lloyd then ordered for Zane to pursue the first biker, for Kai to go after the second, and he would go after the third; the other three ninja were ordered to stay behind and would be called in for backup if needed. Not long after, the three ninja set out in their respective vehicles to begin pursuit of their enemies. Kai was the first to discover his quarry, radioing in to the others that he was going to shadow his target to the final destination - plan supported by Zane and Lloyd who both agreed to do the same with their targets. However, in spite of following closely, all three ninja somehow managed to lose their bikers who seemingly vanished without a trace?! Dismounting from their vehicles, Zane exclaimed that this was an impossibility while Kai suggested that the bikers could still be nearby and it was up to all of them to look for them; Lloyd on the other hand, thought to himself that he wasn't the only one who missed his target this time.
After some brief searching, the trio discovered a warehouse bearing the insignia of the Sons of Garmadon. After Lloyd radioed in for backup, the three climbed up the fire escape and peered through a window, discovering the entirety of the gang were present inside; the ninja had stumbled upon a biker gang meeting. When the other three ninja arrived, all six disguised themselves as members of the Sons of Garmadon and infiltrated the meeting, listening as Killow declared that they would inevitably conquer Ninjago with the power of the Oni Masks. Killow then declared that to prove their power, Mr. E would fight against one of the bikers, first without the Oni Mask of Vengeance, then with. And seemingly at random, Killow pointed at Nya and declared that she would be the one fighting Mr. E. Although Nya tried to protest at first, she sprung into action and leapt towards Mr. E, but was knocked back with a powerful kick.
Recovering from the blow, Nya shouted that Mr. E's kicks didn't scare her and she began fighting even more ferociously than before, impressing Killow who mused that Mr. E and this biker were evenly matched; perhaps it was time then to demonstrate the Mask of Vengeance? Before any decisions could be made, however, Nya's fake moustache fell off, exposing her identity! As the bikers stood in shock, Nya pulled off her disguise and called for the rest of the ninja to reveal themselves, surprising the bikers as the ninja began to fight and quickly overwhelm their numbers. Realizing their situation, Killow stuffed the Mask of Vengeance into a bag and began to flee, though Lloyd intercepted him by hurling a shuriken at him, striking the bag out from the big man's hands and pinning it to the wall! With the mask secure, the ninja ripped into their Spinjitzu tornadoes and quickly wrapped up the battle, defeating all of the Sons of Garmadon.
In their victory, Nya realized that while the bag remained pinned to the wall, the mask within had been taken! Nevertheless, she praised Lloyd for his throwing and in reply he stated that he felt ready to lead the team once more, ordering for the ninja to retreat.

- The comic features all of the ninja in their Ceremonial robes and gives every ninja a Sons of Garmadon disguise while only Cole and Zane's appeared in the show.
- Despite the comic taking place sometime during Season 8, the ninja are wearing their Season 9 suits.
- The comic does not specify which Oni Mask is currently in possession of the Sons of Garmadon, though it is most likely the Mask of Vengeance, as Killow specified that Mr. E would be wearing it to demonstrate its combat abilities.
- Likewise, it is unknown who stole the mask from the satchel after Lloyd pinned it to the wall, but it is possible that Mr. E retrieved it, as he is not present in the final panel of the comic and was last seen being knocked away by Nya's spinjitzu tornado.
