At the end of the Long Winter and the fall of the Ice Emperor, the ninja, Kataru, and Akita escort a defeated Vex to the outskirts of the Never-Realm, where he would live in exile. Although Vex protested that he could make the group's while should they release him, Zane immediately shut down his offer in response.
As the group continue along the snow covered terrain, Cole warns the group to keep their voices low, lest they start an avalanche. Thinking of a plan of escape, the cunning Vex now shouted as loud as he could to trigger the exact hazard Cole had just warned about. While the ninja brace themselves for the falling snow, Vex slipped away, though he would trip not long afterwards and tumble down the mountain. Determined to prevent their prisoner from escaping, the ninja, Akita, and Kataru, made use of some nearby planks to sled their way down the snow covered slopes in pursuit of Vex.
Upon arriving at the base of cliff, the ninja were confronted by a pair of ravenous beasts that Akita could not identify. She did, however, surmise that they could have been creatures that had once been frozen by the Ice Emperor but were now released thanks to the end of the Long Winter and the recession of the dark ice that had once strangled the realm. As the group struggled to evade the claws and attacks of the beasts, the other ninja turned to Zane to encase their foes in ice once more, but Zane cried out in reply that he was trying to, but the beasts were too fast for him! Nya then stepped up and generated bursts of water around the beasts, urging Zane to freeze the water she had generated. This worked and the creatures found themselves slipping and sliding across the newly formed ice until they crashed into the cliffside, where Cole then used his powers over Earth to bury them under a pile of stone. Trapped beneath the rubble, Zane then used his powers to further encase the creatures in ice, ensuring that it would take them even longer escape, if they would at all.
After resuming their search for Vex, the group wondered how he could have possibly disappeared without a trace so quickly! Kataru then spoke up, suddenly recalling an old legend in the Never-Realm about a winged beast. He suggested this creature too could have been freed by the end of the Long Winter, and no sooner had he said that, Akita pointed outward towards a giant, winged creature! And to add to it, on a cliff edge beside the creature, was a large nest, with Vex trapped inside!
Since the winged creature did not spot the group, Kataru surmised that it must have had poor eyesight, though they would have to retrieve Vex from the creature's nest. When Jay raised objections to saving villains, Lloyd replied that Vex's punishment was not to be fed to the offspring of a giant creature and as such, they had a duty to save him. However, since the creature had not seen any of the group, Lloyd opined that stealth would be their best option and only a small team should go save Vex. When Akita almost immediately offered to go alongside Lloyd, the other ninja talked amongst themselves about how close the two seemed to be, though Nya ordered them to remain focused on their mission and to keep a lookout for any other monsters.
After reaching the nest, Lloyd and Akita began to help Vex escape, but Lloyd accidentally broke one of the twigs comprising the nest. This sound immediately alerted the parent, who then pursued the trio all the way down to where the other ninja were waiting. As it flew past on several dive runs, aiming to capture its new prey with its talons, the ninja fought back with their powers, only to discover to their dismay that the creature was immune to elemental power! With no way of fighting back, Lloyd proposed that they all use the boards they had taken earlier to serve as camouflage, for the creature couldn't grab what it couldn't see. Fortunately, this plan worked, and the winged creature flew away in confusion.
With the danger passed, the group continued to escort Vex to the outskirts, with the former advisor of the Ice Emperor agreeing to stay silent going forward, for he had enough of monsters. After completing their mission, the group returned the boards where they had found them, for they had served their purpose and could serve others just as well in the future.

- According to Vex, he gets gassy when he's nervous.
- The ninja, Akita, and Kataru, are seen escorting Vex to the Outskirts. However, in the epilogue of "Awakenings", two former Blizzard Samurai alongside Akita and Kataru escorted Vex.
- It is possible the ninja met up with the Samurai later on before the scene in Awakenings, as the comic ends before they reach the outskirts.
