Overview
Wolves are a species of canine living in the Merged Realms.
History
History[]
Background[]
Long before time had a name, different species of wolves came into existence across the Realms. For example, the Frost Wolves emerged in the Never-Realm, while the realm of the Wyldness became populated by various tribes of anthropomorphic wolves.
Millennia ago, a pair of anthropomorphic wolf siblings, Nokt and Rox, were bestowed with the Elemental Powers of Brute Force and Fear and their cousin Zarkt with Misfortune by Thunderfang's Chaos respectively. Banding together along with two other Elemental Masters, they formed the Wolf Clan and sought to conquer the entirety of the Wyldness. Their actions would lead them to earn another name, one that they would adopt with pride: the Forbidden Five. In spite of their efforts, the Five were ultimately defeated by the Dragon Masters and banished to the Nether-Space.
Following the disappearance of the Five, one of their subordinates, Lord Argus, was deceived into accidentally unleashing a curse upon the Wyldness, transforming himself into a monstrous lycanthrope in the process. Controlled by his manipulator, Zaiden Kane, the Lycan King (as he was now known as) waged a new war throughout the Wyldness but was defeated by the combined might of the Wolf Clan.
Sixty years before the arrival of the Ninja into the Never-Realm, a Formling named Akita discovered her animal form as being that of a white wolf.
Shatterspin[]
For countless years after the Exile of the Forbidden Five, the Lycan King continued to wander about in the dying realm of the Wyldness.
In the days leading to the Serpentine War, Garmadon made his way to the Wyldness in search of the powers used by the Forbidden Five and the Wolf Clan. Not long after his arrival, Garmadon encountered the Lycan King, barely surviving the encounter had it not been for the Children of the Wolf. Charged with offering the Children a brighter future, Garmadon trained them in the ways of Shatterspin, and together they sought out to defeat the Lycan King. In the ensuing battle, Zaiden Kane reasserted control over the lycanthrope and pursued Garmadon and Asa to the Shadow Dojo. There, Asa was able to kill the Lycan King and Zaiden Kane by destroying the Spectral Crown - but at the cost of his own life. With the destruction of the crown and Argus' death, the curse set upon the Wyldness was lifted, allowing the war-torn realm to finally heal.
Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu[]
After the ninja entered the Never-Realm in search of their missing friend, they had several encounters with Frost Wolves, almost all of which were hostile.
During one such encounter, Lloyd was saved by Akita in her wolf form. Mistaking her as simply being another wolf, Lloyd provided her with some food to express his gratitude and nicknamed her "Red" before adopting her as a traveling companion. To his surprise, the next morning, "Red" had disappeared and in her place was now a young woman. Akita would continue to accompany Lloyd in his search for the Ice Emperor, though her reason for doing so was to seek revenge on the emperor for his actions against her people.
Monstrosity[]
As Kai scavenged a sandogasa hat from a skeleton in the Land of Monsters, a wolf howled at him.
Dragons Rising, Season 2[]
After countless millennia trapped within the Nether-Space, Nokt was freed by Ras during the Ritual of the Blood Moon. Unbeknownst to anyone at the time, Rox's soul also managed to escape and took possession over Jordana. Ras then latched a Control implant onto the back of Nokt's head, forcing the dark warrior to do his bidding.
Under Ras' command, Nokt participated in the Tournament of the Sources where he slowly climbed his way to total victory. During the winner's ceremony however, Rox revealed herself and both wolf siblings revealed their true intentions before betraying Ras. Although the ninja gave chase, they were unable to prevent the two from releasing the rest of the Forbidden Five and escaping to parts unknown.
Dragons Rising, Season 3[]
Nokt, Rox, and Zarkt resurfaced with Drix and Kur. Stealing supplies, the Forbidden Five went to the First Land, where Thunderfang's prison was located. There, the group agreed to find the five Prismatic Blades to release Thunderfang so that in return, he will give them the powers they want to regain their long lost might. Both Nokt and Rox succeeded in gaining a Prismatic Blade; Nokt gained the Red Prismatic Blade from the Freebooters’ prison train and Rox raided the Algae farmers' village to find the Green Prismatic Blade. When Zarkt failed to gain the Blue Prismatic Blade, Rox angrily reprimanded and warned him that the "Forbidden Five" would become the "Forbidden Four" if he failed again. When Kur came back with a broken Yellow Prismatic Blade, Rox took it to Djinjago to force Arrakore to repair the blade. Later, the three wolves and Kur got an insect from Drix, who recovered the Blue and Returning Blades from the Ninja. After Rox and Nokt secured the blades, the Five went to the prison and free Thunderfang. When they demanded for the powers he promised, Thunderfang quickly betrayed them and absorbed their souls, leaving their bodies in his prison as he broke out. After Arin threw a healing elixir at Thunderfang, the Five's souls were reabsorbed by the Shatter Dragon as he went into the Spectral Lands.
Following Thunderfang’s banishment to the Spectral Lands, Nokt, Rox, and Zarkt were turned into ghostly Hollow Ones, collecting souls for their master across the Merged Lands. After Rox collected enough souls for Thunderfang’s evolution into a Source Dragon, Zarkt was sent to the Cave of Bells in Djinjago while she and Nokt stayed with Drix in the Spectral Lands to guard the Shatter Dragon. After the Arc Dragon of Focus defeated Thunderfang, their souls disappeared into an unknown fate.

Trivia
Trivia[]
- Although no wolves have been seen in Ninjago, their existence was heavily implied by the fact that Garmadon and the ninja know who the wolves are in Shatterspin and Season 11 respectively. Also, there is an animal fighting style named after a wolf, and the wolf is Shade's (and possibly Zane's) elemental symbol.
- The wolves were also seen in Ninjago in The Challenge of Samukai and "The Four Trials", but both comics are considered non-canon for other reasons.
