“It is a part of our history. When all hope seemed lost, you confronted destruction with creation. Balance was restored. That is the power of Spinjitzu, which we must always—”

Spinjitzu is a close-combat martial arts technique created by the First Spinjitzu Master. It involves the user tapping into their inner balance while spinning rapidly, creating a tornado-like vortex of energy around themselves. It is the art of rotation, which adds force and momentum to blows.[1] Spinjitzu is often combined with Elemental Powers and takes the color from its user's respective element.

History

History[]

Background[]

Spinjitzu was created by the First Spinjitzu Master likely inspired by the movement the Dragons perform when they travel between realms. Then he taught the art of Spinjitzu to his two sons and to other people such as King Urd Leatherwing and Nineko and the martial art technique was transmitted through the realms. King Urd Leatherwing would eventually teach the technique to Ekesian Coldfang the Wise, who in turn would teach Egalt and Rontu, who would be known as Dragon Masters. Other martial teachers even used Spinjitzu to create variations; like Rising Dragon, of the technique or linked martial art.

During his youth, Wu, one of the sons of the First Spinjitzu Master, taught Spinjitzu to the young Serpentine sorceress Aspheera and thousands of years later, he taught it to his students, Jay Walker, Zane, Kai, Cole, Lloyd Garmadon and Nya.

Tournament of Elements[]

Intro[]

S4IntroSpinjitzu

The ninja (other than Zane), Wu, Garmadon, and Nya all do Spinjitzu together at the end of the intro.

For the first time, Master Garmadon's Spinjitzu (purified of the Great Devourer's venom) is shown as a dull silver, and Nya's Spinjitzu is a dark red. This indicates that Garmadon's Destruction element returned to a balanced state,[6] and that Nya had learned Spinjitzu at some point. According to one of the show's co-creator though, Garmadon's Spinjitzu is still purple despite being purified.[7] Additionally, it has since been confirmed that Nya learned Spinjitzu between the events of Season 6: Skybound and Day of the Departed,[8] meaning the events portrayed in this intro are non-canon.

Overview[]

Despite having active elements, all the ninja but Lloyd and Kai stopped using their Spinjitzu, as they no longer fought enemies, taking on full-time jobs (Lloyd continued to train as a ninja, and Kai became a competitive fighter). After entering the Tournament of Elements, the ninja still refrained from performing Spinjitzu, except in dire situations when not competing. This may be because they considered using such a rare and powerful martial art to be an unfair advantage to the other competitors (outside of the Tournament, they use the ability to even the odds of an outmatched fight).

Possession[]

Overview[]

After losing their elemental powers, the ninja could no longer perform elemental Spinjitzu. This would be especially ineffective against ghosts, which can become intangible. Since Morro was able to command and control strong gusts of Wind, and Spinjitzu is a tornado-based ability, it became useless in combat. Because the art of Airjitzu involves extreme spinning in a vortex (and even turning the same color as the user's element), it can be considered a branch from the original art of Spinjitzu. It was also said in "Stiix and Stones" that Airjitzu "can make a Spinjitzu Master fly" so it's possible that only Spinjitzu users can perform the technique.

After Cole had wished for Vengestone to strengthen the ninja's elemental powers, they got out of control, and in order to regain control, the ninja broke the bonds of the Vengestone shackles. Despite this, there appeared to be some heightened power that was still unused; which showed when Cole, Lloyd, and Jay then did Spinjitzu that sparked and had deeper coloring.

Riyu finally performs Spinjitzu

Riyu finally performs Spinjitzu

When Kur was almost going to destroy the focus crystals, Sora attempted to stop her but was blown back by her Shatterspin. When Kur lets her guard down Riyu manage to stop her by finally performing Spinjitzu, taking her down when she didn't activate Shatterspin.

Abilities

Abilities[]

  • Ergokinetic Vortex Creation: Spinjitzu grants the user the ability to create a vortex of energy and color around themselves while spinning. The user and element (if one is activated/being used) rotate rapidly, allowing quick perception and the ability to hit or spin enemies in the process. When slowed down, it is visible that these tornadoes are made of small elemental particles which, when sped up, form a Spinjitzu tornado.[9] It's not necessary to have an element to use Spinjitzu.
    • Elementokinetic Vortex Creation: If the user has elemental powers, the energy vortex takes on the color of their element and has elemental properties.
      • Elemental Infusion: Elemental Powers can be used while using Spinjitzu, and this is shown when Kai is able to melt floors and ice and when Zane froze Ultra Violet.
    • Speed boost: In regards to transportation, the Spinjitzu tornado can move horizontally across surfaces at a rapid pace. This speed does not seem to be affected by stairs or the surface of still bodies of water.
    • Aerial boost: By propelling themselves upwards in a certain direction (using a jump or a running jump) and then doing Spinjitzu, the user can be carried through the air in that direction for a short time.[10]
      • Jump/Leap Enhancement: This technique is most commonly used as a boost that can significantly increase the reach of a jump.
    • Excellent combat: Spinjitzu is very effective bare-handed, as Garmadon was able to beat Samukai with just Spinjitzu.[11]
      • Elemental Deflection: Spinjitzu is very effective in deflecting Elemental powers, as Lloyd manage to shield Akita from Zane's Forbidden Spinjitzu Ice.
    • Elemental Combination: Cole was able to create a trail of orange magma by combining his Spinjitzu with his Earth Punch.
    • Attraction & Repulsion: Spinjitzu allows the user to attract people and repel them. This was shown with Arin fighting Ras in the Underworld. This ability only works for a full-fledge tornado not a rumbly tornado.
    • Spinning Attack: Spinjitzu allows the user to attack while spinning.
    • Vacuum Effect: Spinjitzu can be used to suck objects into the Spinjitzu vortex and then telepathically throw them with pinpoint accuracy.
    • Drilling/Tunnel creation: Spinjitzu can also move downward depending on the situation: the user can choose to drill a hole on the ground to, for example, make a quick escape. However, the surface has to be thin or weak enough for the drilling to work, like a boardwalk.[12]
    • Enhanced Throwing: The user is able to throw opponents outside of the Spinjitzu tornado at an enhanced rate after defeating them.[13]
    • Quick clothes change: The speed and the blocked viewing of the user acquired inside the tornado allows a fast and efficient clothing change if the clothes are available. This has been used by the ninja on several occasions to change from other clothing into their ninja suits.[14][15][16]
    • Verbal communication: Verbal communication is possible while doing Spinjitzu, despite all motions being sped up. When Jay first learns the martial art, he talks with the other ninja while in his tornado.[17] Zane was also able to tell the ninja about his solution to the first puzzle in the Tomb of the First Spinjitzu Master while still doing Spinjitzu.[18]
    • Lack of vision impairment: Despite the nature of the technique, the user's vision is never observed to be impaired when using Spinjitzu, as they always seem to know where they're going. When the viewpoint is changed to what Zane sees in Spinjitzu, it appears that he was able to see several feet around him as he spun, even with some streaks of color from the tornado.[18]
    • Wielding weapons: The user still has the ability to wield weapons properly in combat, as shown by the four original ninja when they perform Spinjitzu for the first time and show no difficulty in handling their weapons.[17]
Weaknesses/Limits

Weaknesses/Limits[]

  • Lack of element/weapon: Without a weapon or active elemental power, the user's Spinjitzu becomes less effective in defense and offense. The ninja demonstrated this throughout Season 2 when they lacked their Elemental Powers, but still had weapons by not relying on Spinjitzu as much.
  • Fatigue: Spinjitzu has a massive toll on the user, requiring much energy to sustain, with individuals like the ninja at peak physical capability only able to sustain a tornado for about fifteen seconds.(Or you have to be the golden master/first spinjitzu master[19]
  • Vulnerability: While doing Spinjitzu, the user can quite easily be knocked out of their Spinjitzu vortex (a very powerful strike) and can be quite vulnerable after being struck.
  • Inaccuracy: An inexperienced user would be unable to concentrate where the enemy is.
  • Lack of size: People who are shorter may have difficulty performing Spinjitzu.[20]
  • Gravity: Spinjitzu cannot be performed in space due to the lack of gravity.[21]
  • Wind: Spinjitzu can be countered by strong winds, as seen in "Winds of Change".
  • Ghosts: As ghosts can turn intangible, this means Spinjitzu is useless against intangible beings.
  • Extreme Force: On rare occasions, people with extreme forces or larger opponents can counter Spinjitzu, such as when Dogshank managed to break Lloyd’s Spinjitzu tornado, a feat that was also shown by Pythor (because Anacondrai have enhanced strength along with his Anacondrai Staff). Grief-Bringer was able to swipe Kai out of his Spinjtizu tornado. Ras also managed to disrupt Lloyd’s Spinjitzu by using the Icon of the Source Dragon of Strength.
  • Forbidden Spinjitzu: Forbidden Spinjitzu is a powerful dark counterpart of Spinjitzu capable of overpowering its predecessor.
  • Shatterspin: Shatterspin, a corrupted and forbidden version of Spinjitzu, can also overpower its predecessor.

The Ninja combine their Spinjitzu together to make the Tornado of Creation

The four ninja can use their Spinjitzu tornadoes to form the Tornado of Creation. When they each do Spinjitzu in order (Earth, Fire, Ice, then Lightning), they make a quick spiraling movement, until the four tornadoes get close enough to come together. A large vortex is immediately formed that appears as a combination of the four main elements, known as the Tornado of Creation. Coming out of this tornado is also similar to its formation, with it quickly shrinking in size, followed by the reappearance of the four Spinjitzu tornadoes. The resulting creation also stands where the Tornado of Creation had been.

It can be used similarly to Creation but on a larger scale. The four users can pull materials and objects from around them and into the tornado. The result is any structure, tool, or object (of an abundance of different sizes and shapes) among an almost unlimited variety, bound only by the users' imagination.

Despite its advantages, however, there is one serious drawback: performing the Tornado of Creation is extremely hard and dangerous. It is said that it takes total cooperation, trust, and teamwork for it to be accomplished, or it will have disastrous consequences. Due to this costly risk, the Tornado of Creation is only used in the most desperate of times, if not, as a last resort.

Forbidden Spinjitzu[]

Forbidden Spinjitzu Cole

Forbidden Spinjitzu Cole

Forbidden Spinjitzu is a powerful but equally pervasive variant of Spinjitzu developed by the First Spinjitzu Master. During the First Age roughly a millennium before the present day, the First Spinjitzu Master created the the forbidden art and imparted its knowledge and power in the form of two scrolls. A young Wu and Garmadon took the scrolls against their father's wishes, using it to defeat the rogue Serpentine sorceress, Aspheera. Both scrolls would be lost to time until the present; with one found at the Ninjago Museum of History and the other at the Explorer's Club.

By holding the scroll, the user is instantly granted incredible power, similar to when an Elemental Master accesses their True Potential. Consequently, it also twists the user's personality by making them aggressive, seemingly causing them to become addicted to it via prolonged usage until they become corrupted under its influence. It changes color when it corresponds with a different power. The Forbidden Spinjitzu is much stronger than regular Spinjitzu and can amplify magic making it possible to banish anything or anyone to another realm, or even into another time.

Cole's Spinjitzu Burst

Cole's Spinjitzu Burst

Spinjitzu Burst[]

The Spinjitzu Burst represents a powerful form of Spinjitzu. Although accessible to any Elemental Master when they're surrounded by what fuels their Elemental Powers, the knowledge and practice of the technique ended up being forgotten by almost every element, except for Earth, causing it to be exclusively transmitted by the Elemental Masters of Earth. This distinction was established years after the inception of the Burst.

Object Spinjitzu[]

Arin using Object Spinjitzu

Arin using Object Spinjitzu

Object Spinjitzu is a unique form of Spinjitzu created by Arin. It allows the user to transfer their Spinjitzu energy into an inanimate object, causing serious damage.

Shatterspin[]

Nokt and Rox (in Jordana's body) using Shatterspin

Nokt and Rox (in Jordana's body) using Shatterspin

Shatterspin is a highly developed but corrupt form of Spinjitzu utilizing Thunderfang's dragon energy, created by the Forbidden Five through their unique interpretation of the art until it ultimately led to their corruption.[24] It's exclusive to Elemental Masters who have achieved mastery in teachings regarding force and strength.[25] However, unlike the Forbidden Five, most Elemental Masters must use Wolf Masks energized by the Gong of Shattering. While this technique can effectively counter regular Spinjitzu tornados, it is largely weak against the Rising Dragon technique which can pierce through its defenses.

Catjitzu[]

Garmadon using Catjitzu

Garmadon using Catjitzu

Catjitzu is a modified form of Spinjitzu invented by Nineko after she left the First Spinjitzu Master. It consists of several new movements that allow the user to jump up or down using the Spinjitzu tornado.

Dragon Spinjitzu[]

Lloyd using Dragon Spinjitzu

Lloyd using Dragon Spinjitzu

Dragon Spinjitzu is a form of Spinjitzu that is influenced by the First Land as a result of the Merge. It takes on the appearance of a classic Spinjitzu tornado but with a dragon avatar spinning around. Lloyd commented on how it felt weird, hinting at how this variation may have untapped potential.

Linked martial arts[]

Following the invention of Spinjitzu, several martial art techniques were invented inspired by it.

Airjitzu[]

Master Kodokuna Yang created this martial art through the inspiration of Spinjitzu. It involves the user tapping into their innate energies while spinning rapidly, creating a tornado-like vortex of energy around themselves which also allows them to levitate over land.

Rising Dragon[]

Kai,Nya, and Lloyd combining their Rising Dragon Technique.

The Dragon Masters devised the Rising Dragon technique to counter Shatterspin. It's a skill set that relies on Spinjitzu, as it forms the basis of Rising Dragon. By synchronizing their movements with the flow of the universe, practitioners of Rising Dragon can tap into its power. To perform the technique, one must first initiate Spinjitzu, channeling their energy into the Spinjitzu tornado, and then transition into Rising Dragon. If the person is proficient in Rising Dragon, the necessity to use Spinjitzu would no longer be needed, allowing for alternative methods of performance.[26]

Trivia

Trivia[]

The Trivia on Spinjitzu needs to be organized.
  • You can help the wiki by organizing the following information chronologically based on how the information applies to the series.
  • This template can be removed once the section has been organized.
  • Its name is a combination of "spin" and "ninjutsu," a martial art that real-life ninja use.
    • The word was coined by Matthew Ashton, Vice President of Design at LEGO.[28]
    • The reason Spinjitzu is spelled this way and not as "Spinjutsu", as it should be, is that Tommy Andreasen thought it was spelled as "ninjitzu" and never checked it.[29]
  • Spinjitzu was used by at least one character in every episode up until "Enter the Digiverse." It began to be used a lot less frequently after this.
  • Each of Ninjago's dragons are able to perform something similar to Spinjitzu when they cross between realms, as shown in "Weapons of Destiny" and "Lessons for a Master."
    • Given that the First Spinjitzu Master is half-dragon, this makes sense. It's possible that Spinjitzu was inspired by this.[30]
    • Dragons are able to learn and use Spinjitzu.[25]
  • Although the element of a user's Spinjitzu is always based on their natural elemental affinity, the color of the resulting tornado appears to also be influenced by the color of their outfit. For instance, Zane's Spinjitzu generated a pink tornado in "Can of Worms," after his white gi was turned pink when it got washed with Kai's red gi. This leads to the conclusion that both attire and element contribute to the Spinjtizu's color (or possibly that it defaults to the elemental color, and only if the user's attire went through a color change).
    • It is possible that when a user is dressed completely in one color, the elemental color and attire's color combine (Zane's white element and pink gi would create the pink Spinjitzu, and the other ninja have all justified the possibility throughout their uniform changes).
    • Chris "Doc" Wyatt stated that he personally believes that personality dictates the color of Spinjitzu.[31]
      • This accounts for the color of Misako and of Doubloon's Spinjitzu tornadoes, which don't match the color of their respective outfits.
  • Ever since giving half of his power source to P.I.X.A.L., Zane was unable to do Spinjitzu independently and needed P.I.X.A.L. until after his supposed death. After returning as the Titanium Ninja, he can once again do Spinjitzu.
  • The evil ninja have slightly duller, grayish versions of the ninja's Spinjitzu colors.
  • In "Return of the Overlord," a Dark Matter-infected Nya used what appears to be a crimson Spinjitzu tornado when she first attacked the ninja. After the defeat of the Overlord, Nya was cured of the corruption from the Dark Matter after the Overlord's defeat.
    • After becoming the Master of Water, her Spinjitzu's color became dark blue (however, as of Season 8, her Spinjitzu tornado color has become light blue).
    • Tommy Andreasen was not very involved in the production of "Day of the Departed," so when he watched the intended final version, he was "horrified" to see that Nya's Spinjitzu was red and called Peter Hausner to insist it be changed to the blue.[32]
  • Eight known people who don't have Elemental Powers but use Spinjitzu are Misako, Master Yang, Doubloon, Aspheera, Nineko, Arin, Rontu, and Egalt.
    • Misako learned Spinjitzu from Wu at some point before or during the Serpentine War.
    • Yang learned Spinjitzu at some point and used it to develop Airjitzu.[1] He has never used the original technique onscreen.
    • Doubloon learned Spinjitzu at some point, long before he became a thief.[1]
    • Aspheera learned Spinjitzu from Wu when they were children.
    • Nineko learned Spinjitzu from the First Spinjitzu Master and used it to develop Catjitzu.
    • Arin learned Spinjitzu by himself in the years following the Merge, which allowed him to create inadvertently Object Spinjitzu.
    • Rontu learned Spinjitzu by Ekesian Coldfang the Wise, which allowed her to co-create Rising Dragon technique with Egalt.
  • In a scene during "Day of the Departed," Cole's Spinjitzu has a ghostly green glow to it. This is the only time in the series that this is seen.
  • The comic book series that begins with The Challenge of Samukai has some differences pertaining to Spinjitzu.
    • Wu's Spinjitzu is gold in the show, but it's orange in the books.
    • In the books, Spinjitzu enables the user to fly and also creates an updraft, while the TV counterpart only allows enhanced jumping. This idea may have been the forerunner of Airjitzu.
    • In Rebooted, Spinjitzu when the user has Golden Power is revealed to be colored gold. However, Golden Lloyd's Spinjitzu is colored green in Destiny of Doom.
    • Spinjitzu is always full-body length in the show, but in the books, it mostly comes up to only the waist and only sometimes full-body length.
    • Garmadon's Spinjitzu in The Challenge of Samukai (when he was young) is dark blue and his purified post-Season 2 self has silver Spinjitzu, while his Spinjitzu is purple all the time (excluding the opening sequence for Season 4) in the show.
  • During Seasons 8-10, the ninja's Spinjitzu changed dramatically, each having a more elemental redesign. Wu and Garmadon's tornadoes also changed, matching Lloyd's with the addition of their respective color-schemes, but lacking sparkles. The Spinjitzu animations returned to a less detailed style akin to earlier seasons in Season 11.
    • Kai and Zane's Spinjitzu look more like a spinning sphere with parts that represent their elemental powers.
    • Lloyd and Jay's Spinjitzu tornadoes look more detailed but less individualized than the other ninja, as they are a basic tornado of energy and lightning.
    • Nya's Spinjitzu looks like a water cyclone, and it is now light blue.
    • Cole's Spinjitzu has a more brownish color, and it has rocks circling around it.
  • The ninja (From Season 8 to Season 10) have their own individual warming up to doing spinjitzu:
    • Lloyd performing windmill arms.
    • Zane does a spinning handstand.
    • Kai does two turns in the air.
    • Nya does a turn and then a back-flip.
    • Jay turns only once.
    • Cole hits the ground.
  • When the ninja use Spinjitzu (as of Season 8), their tornadoes will leave behind their element, excluding Cole.
    • But whenever Cole uses Spinjitzu while his Earth Punch is active, his Spinjitzu will leave behind a trail of magma.
  • The height of Spinjitzu varies. In the comic book series that begins with The Challenge of Samukai, it is mostly waist-length and occasionally full-body-length. In the show, it is always full-body-length. In the 2012 sets, it is waist-length, and in the 2019 sets, it is full-body-length.
    • However, the 2012 sets were built so that the tornadoes resembled tops for play.
  • The Book of Spinjitzu reveals that there is a dark side of Spinjitzu and that its secrets lie in the Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu. It is a forbidden art that the First Spinjitzu Master didn't want Wu and Garmadon to know.
  • According to The Book of Spinjitzu, all new martial arts can be traced back to Spinjitzu (including Airjitzu).
  • Garmadon has done it the fewest times of the original main characters. The only episodes where he has performed Spinjitzu in the present are "The Royal Blacksmiths" and "Endings." However, he is also seen doing it in the past in "An Underworldly Takeover," "Spellbound," and "Lost in Time."
  • Aspheera is the third main villain capable of performing Spinjitzu. She has a bright purple tornado seen in "Boobytraps and How to Survive Them" and the flashback in "Never Trust a Human," but after she stole Kai's powers, her Spinjitzu became red.
  • In "An Underworldly Takeover", Garmadon performs Spinjitzu, but he doesn't spin inside. Though this could be an error, Jay also did not spin much inside his tornado in "The Golden Weapon", so it's possible this was simply the way Spinjitzu was animated at the time.
  • Garmadon's dull silver Spinjitzu is also seen in art for Season 4.[33]
  • According to Tommy Kalmar:
    • Morro most likely did not know Spinjitzu, because "Spinjitzu is much more than just kicks, punches and tornadoes."[34]
  • It appears Spinjitzu slows down time for the user, as the inside of Spinjitzu is almost always shown in slow motion (specifically in "The Golden Weapon," "The New Masters of Spinjitzu," "An Underworldly Takeover," and "The Invitation"). This would explain why Wu was able to put on the ninja's suits at record speed in "The Golden Weapon."[35]
  • When asked whether Spinjitzu could transform/generate clothing or the ninja simply quickly changed into their suits, Tommy Andreasen asked, "Can fans of fantasy enjoy fantasy without holding fantasy to the boring constraints of reality?"[36] This indicates that there is not a specific in-universe explanation either way.
  • Tommy Andreasen once wrote a crossover short for Ninjago and Legends of Chima that would have involved "Spinjitzu vs Chi" and "Chi powered Spinjitzu."[37][38]
  • Nya has done Spinjitzu the least amount of times on screen out of all the ninja.
  • Kai has done Spinjitzu the most amount of times on screen out of all the ninja.
  • In the pilots; Zane's Spinjitzu was white, but then changed to a light pale blue in the actual show.
  • Nya's Spinjitzu color has changed the most out of any ninja throughout the original series. In Legacy of the Green Ninja, it was crimson during her corrupted form. In the intro to Tournament of Elements, it was dark red. In "Day of the Departed" and The Hands of Time, it was a dark aqua blue. In "The Attack," it was silvery blue. In the Wu Crew shorts, it was a dark medium blue. In the Oni Trilogy, it was light blue. And in "Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu" and onward, it changed to teal.
  • Prior to Sons of Garmadon:
    • Lloyd's Spinjitzu occasionally altered between light green and dark green (it was light green most of the time).
    • Jay's Spinjitzu occasionally altered between light blue and dark blue (it was light blue most of the time).
    • Master Wu's Spinjitzu occasionally altered between light gold and dark gold (it was light gold most of the time).
  • Misako is only ever seen doing Spinjitzu once in the entire show.
  • There have only ever been six female characters ever seen doing Spinjitzu on screen: Nya, Misako, P.I.X.A.L., Aspheera, Rontu, and Sora.
  • After "The Hands of Time", Garmadon has only ever used Spinjitzu on screen once, not counting the flashbacks in "Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu", which takes thousands of years before "The Hands of Time".
  • Learning Spinjitzu is harder than learning dark Magic.[39]
  • After completing a full Spinjitzu tornado, Arin's Spinjitzu has red energy effects in it similar to the effects in Shatterspin. The reason for this is unclear, but appears to be caused by his forceful method of harnessing Spinjitzu instead of naturally working up to it.
