The LEGO Ninjago Movie[]
On Lloyd's birthday, Kai met up with the former and Zane in the hallway of their school where he then gave Lloyd a strong birthday hug. Feeling left out, Zane decided to join in, squeezing both Kai and Lloyd immensely as he declared he would "Increase the pressure!" After the hug, the trio would be joined by Kai's sister, Nya, who rode in on her motorcycle, followed by Cole and Jay. Now united, the six began their day with Social Studies class, during which Kai fell asleep.
After the news reached the school of the latest attack by Garmadon, Kai and the rest of his friends simultaneously asked for a bathroom pass as they raced for their lockers. In reality, Kai and the others were the Secret Ninja Force, the protectors of Ninjago City. Following Lloyd's orders, Kai was the first to power up his Fire Mech before passing the baton to his sister. Once all were suited up and ready, Kai, Cole, and Zane were ordered to head downtown where he and his comrades began laying waste to Garmadon's forces. Later during the battle, Kai gave Lloyd a heads up that Garmadon was nearly at Ninjago Tower.
Following their victory over Garmadon's forces, Kai and the others returned to the warehouse to power down their vehicles when they spotted Destiny's Bounty nearby, meaning that their master, Wu, had returned. In the ensuing conversation, Wu revealed that Kai had the power to control fire before ordering him and the rest of the Secret Ninja Force to practice spinjitzu for three hours.
The next day, Garmadon attacked Ninjago City once more and once again, Kai was ordered to cover downtown alongside Cole and Zane. As the battle progressed, things played out differently this time however as Garmadon was able to defeat Lloyd and his Green Ninja Mech Dragon. Surprised by this turn of events, Kai asked his comrades if any of them could stop Garmadon, only for all of them to answer in the negative. Moments later, Kai's Fire Mech would be destroyed by Meowthra, whom Lloyd had unwittingly summoned by using the Ultimate Weapon. He would then express his fury towards Lloyd alongside the rest of the ninja, emphasizing in particular that their mechs were all destroyed. When Wu revealed there was a way to possibly defeat Garmadon, but it required a long and arduous journey to the Temple of Fragile Foundations, Kai insisted for Wu to train them into becoming better ninja, though he refused to offer Lloyd a second chance.
Later, Kai and the rest of the Secret Ninja Force followed Wu to the Jungle of Lost Souls where they all partook in a brief lesson before Wu ended it prematurely and ordered the ninja to hide. In response, Kai stuck his head down towards the ground while remaining unaware that his legs were sticking up and exposed. Following Wu's plunge from the Bridge of Fallen Mentors, Kai helped carry the cage holding Garmadon, specifically carrying the left rear. As they walked, Kai asked about Garmadon's four arms, to which in response Garmadon claimed he received them after being bitten by a snake, though Kai refused to believe the claim, noting that snakes didn't have arms. Eventually after reaching the Canyon of General Unhappiness, the Secret Ninja Force were attacked by the Fired Generals. Although Kai and his friends fought valiantly, they were ultimately overwhelmed and defeated by the burnt former generals who then captured Lloyd and Garmadon while ignoring the rest of the Secret Ninja Force.
After their battle with the Fired Generals, Kai carried Cole as they roamed through the jungle in search for their friends, shouting, "I got you dude!" over and over along the way. After finding the rest of the ninja, Kai immediately dropped Cole to the ground with a large thud. After realizing that Lloyd and his father were captured by the Fired Generals, the Secret Ninja Force infiltrated the Fired Generals' lair by defeating some of the outer guards and stealing their uniforms. For Kai, he took one of the shark helmets belonging to a female general. After saving their allies, Garmadon ordered the Secret Ninja Force to begin building a method for them to escape while he and his son would toss them the parts needed to build. After Garmadon successfully taught Lloyd how to throw, Kai cheered on his friend, exclaiming that he had a cannon for an arm.
After arriving at the Temple of Fragile Foundations, Kai climbed up ahead of everyone else, being the first to reach the front door. He then briefly explored at least the second floor of the temple and was seen sliding down the railing while the others were gathering around the wall of framed portraits. Garmadon however quickly shooed off Kai and the others to search for the Ultimate Ultimate Weapon while he regaled to Lloyd the story of how he met Lady Iron Dragon, Lloyd's mother. After discovering that the chest containing the Ultimate Ultimate Weapon held a bunch of parts, Kai seemed the most disappointed of the group though he was also the first to change his tune after realizing that the parts represented their elemental powers. After Garmadon betrayed the group and attempted to steal the chest, Kai lunged atop the chest in an attempt to wrest it away from Garmadon but was knocked off. He recovered seconds later however after being filled with rage at the sight of Garmadon smacking his sister to the ground, and with a boost from her, he leapt through the air and managed to flip Garmadon over, forcing him to release the chest. In spite of his efforts however, Lloyd's inability to catch ultimately costed them the Ultimate Ultimate Weapon as Garmadon escaped from the temple with it in his clutches.
With Garmadon's departure having destabilized the mountain upon which the Temple of Fragile Foundations rested, causing the entire temple to begin collapsing, Kai took shelter behind a table alongside Cole and Zane, bemoaning the fact they were about to die since they did not have their mechs anymore. Fortunately however, Lloyd realized that all of them already possessed their elemental powers, and they didn't need the Ultimate Ultimate Weapon, but rather had to achieve inner peace in order to access them. Thanks to Lloyd's coaching, Jay blasted open the doors to the temple, allowing the ninja to escape. As they ran, the head of one of the adorning guardian lion statutes broke off and began rolling down the steps after the ninja. With Lloyd shouting that it was Kai's turn to use his powers, Kai set the head ablaze, which not only failed to stop it, but also made it even more dangerous, much to his chagrin.
After returning to Ninjago City, Kai helped to conceal their movements by using his powers in conjunction with Zane's ice, melting a wall of ice to create a smokescreen of mist. Later, he and the rest of the Secret Ninja Force stood in formation and watched while Lloyd approached Meowthra alone and saved Garmadon.
Appearance
Appearance[]
Kai looks fairly similar to his TV show counterpart, but the main difference is his attitude. He still has his signature hair, just a bit more full and slightly taller. He has a new red ninja gi, somewhat similar to his old one, with a few improvements. His scar is on the other eye and he sports a bandage close to his hairline near his eyebrow opposite to where his scar is.
Personality
Personality[]
Kai's attitude is more serious, like Cole in the TV show. Despite this, he is very compassionate and approachable, as he is "always ready with a hug." Much like his own TV show counterpart, Kai is possibly impulsive, enjoys fighting enemies, and is loyal and protective of those he cares about, especially his teammates. Unlike his TV counterpart (besides the alternate face on his figurine), he seems to be curious or perhaps more sassy and energetic. He also appears to enjoy describing things with a variety of onomatopoeia.
Official descriptions
Official descriptions[]
Kai: Master of Fire[]
This ninja is fiercely loyal and protective when it comes to his friends, like Lloyd, and his sister, Nya. Outgoing and enthusiastic, he is often ready with a hug. He might lack patience with some of Master Wu’s instructions, like trying to produce a flame by rubbing two sticks together, but Kai really gets fired up when there are bad guys to fight.[1]
Meet Kai Kendo[]
Spinjitzu training with Kendo gear is all part of being a ninja. After all, if you want to be a master of fire you have be prepared to take some hits.[2]
Weapons and Abilities
Weapons and Abilities[]
Kai wields a pair of katanas in the trailers, but he may be skillful with other weapons, though these are his favorite weapons.
He and the other Ninja have Elemental Powers like their TV show counterparts, allowing him to create and manipulate fire. As seen in the trailers, Kai's vehicle has weapons that are fire-based like the flamethrower in his mech. Kai was also able to create huge smokescreens to block his enemies' sight with his fire.

Trivia[]
- His vehicle is a giant humanoid mech, which has a flamethrower weapon on its arm.
- Kai in his Ninja gi is the easiest to get out of all the movie ninja, appearing in a total of eight sets.
- His main weapon is a pair of Katanas.
- It is unknown why they were shown with weapons in the commercials. They only used their elemental abilities and their mechs to fight, not once touching their signature weapons.
- He has the gunmetal gray armor in the sets, similar to that of his Skybound variant the only difference being the hue.
- Likewise, he is the only Ninja that wears armor to complement their standard suit.
- Also, in 70617 Temple of the Ultimate Ultimate Weapon, his armor is plain silver rather than the gunmetal gray he wears in other sets.
- His casual outfit is by far the hardest to obtain out of the ninja since it is only available in one set, 70620 Ninjago City, which is very expensive, as well as retired.
- His Swedish voice actor Adam Portnoff also voices him in the real show and has since Season 7: The Hands of Time.
- He briefly had The Joker's hair from The Lego Batman Movie when they were riding their makeshift helicopter.
