Types of gi/Other outfits

Overview

Greatsnakeicon "I was bitten by a snake."
This article is about a subject that is relevant to both the main Ninjago storyline and The LEGO Ninjago Movie. Information may be more directed toward one continuity than the other.

This is a list of all outfits worn by the ninja that are not technically ninja gi but are still worn by members of the group for various reasons.

Blacksmith (2011-2012, 2017, 2019, 2023, 2025)

Blacksmith (2011-2012, 2017, 2019, 2023, 2025)[]

Before Kai and Nya became Ninja's they worked in their parents blacksmith shop and therefore Kai was wearing a blacksmith outfit like his father did. Maya was only wearing blacksmith gloves.

Alternate Blacksmith variants[]

Appearances[]

Casual (2011-2012, 2014-2015, 2017)

Casual (2011-2012, 2014-2015, 2017)[]

Sometimes the ninja have worn more casual clothing, either to pretend not to be ninja ("The Royal Blacksmiths") or simply to hang out in their time off (the non-canon "Wu's Teas").

The original four debut in these clothes in "The Royal Blacksmiths," Nya wore her casual clothing from the beginning of the series because she wasn't a ninja, and she continued to wear it when she became Samurai X. As of season 3 she wears a different casual suit. Lloyd first wears his in the Season 5 two-part finale, "Curseworld, Part I" and "Curseworld, Part II."

These outfits utilize the ninja's main colors, and all except Nya's use designs from other LEGO themes. Jay's and Lloyd's torsos are based on that of Harry Potter's 2010 casual variant, Kai and Zane's come from the Street Skater from Minifigures Series 4, and Cole's comes from the Skater from Minifigures Series 1 with legs from Argus Filch's 2010 variant sans the key chain.

These outfits served as the basis for their undercover outfits in Skybound.

Alternate casual variants[]

Appearances[]

Children (2012, 2017, 2020, 2023-2025)

Children (2012, 2017, 2020, 2023-2025)[]

At various points throughout the series, the ninja have can be seen as children, appearing similarly to their de-aged selves from "Child's Play."

Child Kai appears in flashbacks in "A Time of Traitors" and "Pause and Effect," and child Nya appears in the latter as well. They both appear again with slightly updated designs in a flashback in "Fugitives From Madness."

Lloyd was a child from his first appearance in "Rise of the Snakes" until the end of "Child's Play," retiring his original black outfit in favor of his Green Ninja suit in "All of Nothing." Child Lloyd's original Legacy design features black gloves and updated face and torso prints but does not appear in the series.

Child Cole appears in flashbacks in "Dungeon Crawl!" and "Balance," while Jay has yet to appear as a child in a flashback.

There are some differences between the ninja's chronological younger selves and their artificially de-aged selves from Legacy of the Green Ninja. In The Hands of Time, child Kai has freckles, and in Season 13: Master of the Mountain, child Cole has his post-movie eyebrows (also resembling his mother's).

Child Arin appears at the beginning of "The Merge: Part 1", in a flashback in "The Merge: Part 2," and in multiple flashbacks in "They Gather for the Feast," "Inside the Maze," "Clues and Suspects," and "Crashing Together."

Child Sora appears in multiple flashbacks in "Return to Imperium," "The Battle of the Second Monastery," and "Crashing Together."

Child Wyldfyre appears in a flashback in "I Will Be the Danger."

Child Lloyd appears again in a flashback in "The Calm Inside" with his Legacy design.

Child Frak appeared in a flashback in "They Gather for the Feast."

Appearances[]

Formal (2012, 2019, 2020, 2023)

Formal (2012, 2019, 2020, 2023)[]

“I'll dress up too. Looks fun.”

Jay and Nya wore more formal outfits for their first date at Mega Monster Amusement Park in "Once Bitten, Twice Shy," and Nya wore hers again during the ninja's celebration after obtaining the four Fangblades in "All of Nothing," as well as at the beginning of "Double Trouble." Nya wore a blue kimono in "The Darkness Comes," which uses the same design as her original red kimono/casual outfit. She also wore a pink yukata during Vlad Tutu's dance class in "Let's Dance" and in "I Just Had the Most Wonderful Dream," which Lilly also wore in a flashback in "Balance."

Jay's date outfit uses a partially recolored version of the Magician's torso from Minifigures Series 1, and Nya's original formal outfit comes from Willie Scott from LEGO Indiana Jones.

Pajamas (2011-2012, 2017)

Pajamas (2011-2012, 2017)[]

In some episodes of the pilot ("Way of the Ninja," "The Golden Weapon") and seasons 1 ("Home" through "The Snake King," "The Green Ninja") and 2 ("Wrong Place, Wrong Time," The Stone Army"), the ninja appear in their pajamas. Each pajama is in the color of the corresponding ninja with stripes and buttons in the middle. It has a large neckline and a small breast pocket with an unknown symbol. All the ninja have bare feet. Kai had chest hair in the pilot episodes, but it was gone starting in Season 1.

In "The Green Ninja," Garmadon wore pajamas some of the time when he was staying with the ninja. In "Versus," Jay wore pajamas or a bathrobe because he thought he wouldn't have to fight in the Tournament of Elements for a while. In "Steep Surveillance," Wu wore pajamas or a bathrobe when sleepwalking around Steeper Wisdom.

Although originally the ninja used these suits often during sleep, in newer seasons they are already sleeping in their gi, due to simpler animation because of modest budget (or in-universe because it allows them to leap into action more quickly).[1]

Samurai armor (2012-2015, 2019, 2022-2023, 2025-2026)

Samurai armor (2012-2015, 2019, 2022-2023, 2025-2026)[]

“How'd you make all this stuff?”
“You'd be surprised how much spare time I have waiting for you guys to come back from your missions.”
Kai and Nya, "The Snake King"

The samurai armor make the ninja look like samurai. Prior to becoming a ninja, Nya wore samurai armor as Samurai X, until Possession, when she unlocked her Water powers. She briefly returned to it, following her restoration and brief loss of power in Crystalized. She also wore it in the "Will you enter the Dream World?" mini-series, and the crossover episode "Ninjago - Dream Team", except in "I Just Had the Most Wonderful Dream".

As the Ice Emperor from "The Never-Realm" to "Awakenings," Zane wore armor similar to a samurai's.

Lloyd appears in exclusive samurai armor in Secret World of the Ninja New Edition.

Barbershop quartet suits (2012)

Barbershop quartet suits (2012)[]

In "The Royal Blacksmiths," the ninja wore suits and hats when practicing their act for Ninjago Talent, though they ultimately discarded them when they changed plans for their act.

The Ninjago Spinners card, Ninja Star, shows the ninja in these suits without hair, as they would be unable to simultaneously have their hats and hair in minifigure form.

Pirate disguises (2012)

Pirate disguises (2012)[]

“There are other ways a ninja can hide in plain sight.”

In "Pirates vs. Ninja," the ninja bought costumes at Wong's Costume to infiltrate Captain Soto's pirate crew.

Kai uses the vest and rope design from a common torso from LEGO's Pirates theme, while Cole uses Captain Brickbeard's torso. Jay and Zane use a another recolored common pirate torso with the addition of the belts of the Forestman from Minifigures Series 1.

Child attire (2012)

Child attire (2012)[]

“Oh, this is so humiliating.”
Jay

After being turned into kids by Garmadon's Mega Weapon in "Child's Play," the ninja stole various clothing items from other children to allow themselves to lay low.

Kai's torso design comes from the Street Skater from Minifigures Series 4, and Zane's collar design comes from Harry Potter's 2010 casual variant.

Skulkin disguises (2012)

Skulkin disguises (2012)[]

In "Wrong Place, Wrong Time," the ninja used masks to disguise themselves as Skulkin in order to kidnap Nya to set the timeline right.

Beachwear (2012)

Beachwear (2012)[]

In "The Last Hope," the ninja wore warm weather clothes when they practiced using their newly-received Elemental Blades on a beach in the team's hideout on the Dark Island.

Kai, Jay, and Cole's swimsuit designs come from the Surfer from Minifigures Series 2, whose torso also serves as the basis for Kai's. Cole's torso may be based on the Airplane Mechanic's from LEGO Indiana Jones theme, and Zane's belt design comes from the 2010 variant of Argus Filch from the Harry Potter theme.

Stone Warrior disguises (2012)

Stone Warrior disguises (2012)[]

In "The Last Hope," the ninja wore Stone Warrior attire over their elemental robes as part of a plan for Misako to steal the Helmet of Shadows.

Blooper reel (2012)

Blooper reel (2012)[]

The 2012 blooper reel portrayed the ninja as voice actors of their characters. They wore casual clothing and had different hairstyles and hair colors than their in-show counterparts.

Most of these designs use elements from minifigures in other LEGO themes: Kai's belt comes from Argus Filch from Harry Potter, Cole's shirt collar comes from the 2010 casual Harry Potter minifigure, Jay's shirt collar comes from the Disco Dude from Minifigures Series 1, Nya and Lloyd use altered versions of the torso from Indiana Jones' gray suit variant, and Wu's torso is based on that of the Magician from Minifigures Series 1.

Teacher uniforms (2014)

Teacher uniforms (2014)[]

In "The Surge," the ninja wore sweaters and ordinary pants when they were teachers at Wu's Academy.

Zane's collar design comes from the Computer Programmer from Minifigures Series 7, Cole's torso design comes from the Graduate from Series 5, and Kai's torso design comes from Indiana Jones' gray suit variant from LEGO Indiana Jones.

Space suits (2014)

Space suits (2014)[]

“You need to escape the cargo hold before it's too late. Near the front of the ship is an A2 storage compartment. Inside are emergency spacesuits.”
Wu to the ninja, "The Void

In "The Void" and "The Titanium Ninja," the ninja wore space suits, though Zane did not wear once since, as a Nindroid, he does not require oxygen and his body can withstand the environment of space. The suits are based on the Spaceman from Minifigures Series 1, and each ninja's color is represented by small dots on his suit.

The ninja also wore these suits in Comet Crisis, in which an alien took the form of Nya wearing one as well.

Anacondrai warrior disguises (2015)

Anacondrai warrior disguises (2015)[]

In "Only One Can Remain," the ninja (sans Zane, who was imprisoned at the time) donned Anacondrai warrior disguises over their tournament robes in order to infiltrate Chen's ceremony to find out what was going on under the surface of the Tournament of Elements.

Prisoner uniforms (2015)

Prisoner uniforms (2015)[]

From "Spy for a Spy" to "The Forgotten Element," an increasing number of the Elemental Masters including the ninja (most prominently Cole) wore orange prison uniforms while in Chen's noodle factory. The torso designs of these uniforms are based on that of the Paintballer from Minifigures Series 10. Everyone except Cole has a white undershirt.

Tea uniforms (2015)

Tea uniforms (2015)[]

“Those do not appear to be ninja uniforms. They resemble work attire.”

In "Winds of Change," Wu opens a tea shop and buys new suits for the ninja, in which they were to advertise the tea shop. All uniforms consist of a pale T-shirt with a blue teapot in the middle. Fake teapots serve as a head covering. The ninja wear these suits over their Deepstone uniforms, though the belts from their Deepstone suits are worn over their tea shop shirts. Kai, Jay and Zane wear them, with a straw hat instead, while distracting the ghosts for Lloyd in "Curseworld, Part I".

Snowsuits (2015)

Snowsuits (2015)[]

In the episode "Peak-a-Boo," Kai, Jay, and Zane's Deepstone suits were given an insulated snow-jacket type hood and colored boots to protect them from the cold of the Wailing Alps as they climbed toward the Blind Man's Eye. Cole, having been turned into a ghost the previous episode, did not need one.

Undercover (2016)

Undercover (2016)[]

Having been framed by Nadakhan and going on the run from the police, the ninja wore their casual suits with the addition of headgear, in "Infamous," "Public Enemy Number One," and "Misfortune Rising." Cole wore his hood up, Nya wore a hat in "Infamous" and "Misfortune Rising," and glasses and a blonde wig in "Public Enemy Number One," and the other ninja wore hats.

Kryptarium inmates (2016, 2022)

Kryptarium inmates (2016, 2022)[]

“I don't look good in stripes!”
Kai

In "Enkrypted," the ninja became inmates of Kryptarium Prison after being framed by Nadakhan. They wore the typical prison attire with undershirts of their respective elemental colors underneath. Each of the ninja's prisoner numbers referred to the respective sets they appeared in from the Skybound wave.

At one point, the Mechanic attacked Zane and began to take him apart for spare parts. This makes the prison attire tied with tournament robes as the second suit to feature Zane's chest interior and power source, the first being his damaged Techno robes.

In Crystalized, from "Ninjago City vs. Ninja" to "Hounddog McBrag," Lloyd, Kai, Jay, Cole and Zane wore prison attire again with a couple of exceptions, i.e., their undershirts are gray and are not sporting prisoner numbers on their shirts.

Season 6 variants[]

Season 15 variants[]

Appearances[]

Police disguises (2016)

Police disguises (2016)[]

In "Misfortune Rising," Jay and Nya disguised themselves to infiltrate the Ninjago Police to access their records to find the last known location of the Misfortune Rising.

Sky Pirate disguises (2016)

Sky Pirate disguises (2016)[]

“Then, after our costumer disguises you as Sky Pirates and an acting coach teaches you their dialect to pass undetected—”

In "Wishmasters," Lloyd, Cole, and Nya wore Sky Pirate costumes, along with their own Raid Zeppelin, to infiltrate the Misfortune's Keep to save Jay and poison Nadakhan's drink with the Tiger Widow venom.

Babies (2017, 2023)

Baby Nya appears in Kai's memory in "A Time of Traitors". Unlike the clothes she wore as a child, as a baby she wore an attire relating to her status of Elemental Master of Water.

Baby Lloyd appears in the Garmadon comic series.

Baby movie Lloyd appears briefly in a flashback in The The LEGO Ninjago Movie.

Baby Wyldfyre appears in a flashback in "I Will Be the Danger."

Vermillion disguises (2017)

Vermillion disguises (2017)[]

“So what do we do? We're in deep trouble the moment they spot us.”
“Then let's make sure they don't.”
Cole and Lloyd

In "Out of the Fire and Into the Boiling Sea," the ninja (sans Kai and Nya, who were at the Boiling Sea) wear Vermillion warrior armor over their Fusion suits to infiltrate the Vermillion Dome of Doom to try and destroy the Iron Doom. Unlike the previous villain disguises (Stone Warriors and Anacondrai warriors), their hair is not present beneath their helmets.

Morro, Garmadon and Misako all wore Vermillion Armor in Wu's dream.

Despite not wearing one of these disguises in the show, Kai appeared with one in one of J. Jesús Fernández's promotional artworks.

High school casual (2017-2018)

High school casual (2017-2018)[]

As The LEGO Ninjago Movie has the ninja as average high school students until danger strikes, the ninja had some casual variants. They are all unique and associated with each ninja's elemental power's color and elements of their personality. For example, Jay's jacket has a lightning bolt and Cole is wearing an AC/DC sleeveless top, relating to the character's love for music.

Cole and Lloyd have two casual variants. Lloyd has a Collectible Minifigure variant that is similar to his casual variant but with the hood pulled up. Cole has a variant in 70657 Ninjago City Docks that has a new T-shirt and a black jacket. This variant of Cole did not appear in the movie, but did appear in concept art.

Alternate High school casual variants[]

Fired Generals disguises (2017)

Fired Generals disguises (2017)[]

In the movie, the ninja disguised themselves as the Fired Generals to infiltrate their volcano.

SOG disguises (2018)

SOG disguises (2018)[]

Only Zane and Cole got these suits in the TV series, but in Spinjitzu Surprise! comic, every member of the team dressed up as SOG members.

Scuba gear (2018, 2021)

Scuba gear (2018, 2021)[]

In "Dread on Arrival," the ninja (except Kai and Lloyd) wore scuba gear to travel on Kai's Katana V11 boat in order to discreetly travel to the Temple of Resurrection.

Maya wore scuba gear in "Long Live the King" and "Escape from Merlopia".

Urban suits (2018-2019, 2021-2024)

Urban suits (2018-2019, 2021-2024)[]

Urban suits are casual outfits for the ninja's post-movie designs.

In "The Mask of Deception," "The Explorers Club," "Ninjago City vs. Ninja," and "Kryptarium Prison Blues", Nya wore a striped blue tank top with a short black jacket and blue torn pants, based on her movie counterpart's casual outfit. Her minifigure had a black-and-white-striped tank top, reusing her movie casual torso, and lighter blue pants.

From "The Merge: Part 1 to "Return to Imperium," "The Battle of the Second Monastery," and "What the Mech?," Arin wore an orange sweatshirt with a dragon on it and his initial 'A' in Ninjargon in white, located above the left pocket, navy blue pants also sporting his initial in a lighter color on the right pocket, a very bright celadon belt, and black gloves. He changes into his Merge suit sometime prior to "The Temple of the Dragon Cores," which also retains his Urban sweatshirt.

Cole and Jay's urban suits do not appear in the show. Jay's is similar to his pre-movie casual design and includes the same smiley face pin from his Armor robe, while Cole's is similar to his movie casual design and reuses a torso from LEGO City's 60234 People Pack - Fun Fair and legs from Hidden Side's Nanna and Bill.

Despite not getting actual urban suits, Kai received a blacksmith outfit & Zane recieved a Detective outfit. Kai's torso and legs are reused from the Blacksmith in the LEGO Ideas set 21325 Medieval Blacksmith.

Wyldfyre's didn't received a proper urban suit either but instead has a Wyldness attire.

Frak's urban suit appeared in Temple Thieves!.

Alternate Urban suits (non-canon)[]

Appearances[]

Beggar disguises (2018)

Beggar disguises (2018)[]

“From here on out, we have to hide our identities. They'll be looking for us, and wearing our colors will only draw attention.”

For a few episodes in Hunted, the remaining members of the Resistance disguised themselves as beggars to hide from Garmadon's forces.

Lloyd and Dareth's torsos draw from the Ithorian Jedi Master's torso design, Nya's draws from ZX's and Yoda's 2013 variant's, and Skylor's draws from the Paintballer's.

Dragon Hunter disguises (2018)

Swimsuits (2019, 2021)

Swimsuits (2019, 2021)[]

In "Wasted True Potential," the ninja wore swimsuits when they used the Bell of Divinity as a hot tub and subsequently when they were tested by Wu by being forced to combat a chicken and Kai still wears his when was taking a shower, only for it to have been rigged as one of Wu's booby traps. The ninja wore their swimsuits again in "Questing for Quests" when they decide to soak in the hot tub while brainstorming ideas for a quest. The ninja were seen on their swimsuits again in "Awakenings", while Zane remembers who he is, he has a flashback of the ninja using the bell as a hot tub. Nya wore hers again in "The Call of the Deep" when she was relaxing in the hot tub.

The amount of skin shown by the original four ninja's respective suits is an intentional reference to their original beachwear designs.[2]

Kai, Cole, and Lloyd use the torso of the Shower Guy from Minifigures Series 19.

Avatar outfits (2020)

Avatar outfits (2020)[]

“Where should we start? Maybe find a way to customize our avatars? We can upgrade our look!”

The ninja have Avatar outfits in Prime Empire. Each of these outfits are completely different, and they seem to be based on exaggerated aspects of that ninja's personality or based on a previous outfit that ninja has worn in the past seasons (in the case of Pink Zane and Cole as Rocky Dangerbuff).

Cole and Nya's Avatar outfits do not appear in the TV series, and they entirely consist of parts from previously existing LEGO sets. The Pink Zane Avatar appears within Prime Empire; however, it is not Zane, but another gamer taking on his appearance.

Scott also receives an avatar outfit after entering the game, his most resembling Jay’s.

Harumi's avatar outfit is not Harumi but an imperfect A.I. copy created by Unagami.

Jay also receives a merchant avatar minifigure, however it is not canon to show, nor does it consist of any new parts, those being a silver hat, a blue half-mask, and the torso and legs being the same as his Legacy 1 minifgure.

Jay and Nya, "Human Resources"

Before heading to the Land of Lee, Jay had the other ninja wear casual disguises that they took from the Administration's lost and found to sell their cover story of being reassigned through the Department of Reassignment.
