Rescue Mission

Rescue Mission[]

As he continued to pull Ras atop a sled, Arin informed his master that he wanted to find a cave so that they could rest. In response, Ras retorted that physical exertion wouldn't harm Arin's training; nevertheless, he agreed to set up camp for the night beside a large pit. As night fell, Ras ordered Arin to set up the fire and to prepare some food for the both of them, though Arin noted that there was very little for them to forage here in this desert. With no other options, the two were forced to roast and eat the broad leaves of some nearby cacti.

The next morning, Ras continued Arin's training, instructing his new student to use his Spinjitzu to tear off a nearby vine. When Arin succeeded, Ras complimented Arin on his growing strength and power, but noted that Arin's Spinjitzu still lacked accuracy. Suggesting a new test, Ras asked Arin to use his Spinjitzu to balance atop the felled vine and to traverse the length of the pit. When Arin attempted to do as he was asked, he lost balance and fell into the pit instead. As he rubbed his head from the fall, Ras stood over the edge and laughed. To Arin's dismay, his master's roaring laughter grew only harder as he began mocking Arin for his failure - all adding to Arin's growing anger and frustration. When Ras suddenly collapsed however, Arin summoned his strength and performed a Spinjitzu tornado strong enough to leap out of the pit.

Rushing towards Ras' side, the latter admitted that his laughter was too much for his wounded body to handle, but also noted that it was evidently worth it in the end. Taking note of Arin's confused expression, Ras explained that his laughter and taunting was his way of encouraging the boy; by making him angrier, Arin could summon the strength and power necessary to perform perfect Spinjitzu. Nevertheless, Ras' injuries were only worsening. In an effort to relieve some of his pain, Ras sent out Arin to find whatever medicinal herbs he could find, hoping that they could be used to brew a fortifying tea or something similar.

After some time of wandering, Arin discovered a large patch of Glimwillow Cacti. Recognizing the plant as possessing strong curative abilities, he rushed forward to collect some of their flowers. But at the same time, however, he could not help but question the peculiarity of such a large patch of the plants in one place; after all, Glimwillow Cacti were quite rare. The answer to this question would soon present itself as a group of Dragonian Oni worshippers arrived and yelled at Arin to get away from their Glimwillow Cacti. The Dragonians explained to Arin that they had cultivated these flowers in hopes of using their abilities to resurrect the Oni, intending to restore their bones to life through a ritual. After Arin expressed his doubts over the worshippers' plans, the Dragonians demanded for him to return the single flower he had plucked, but Arin refused and took off in their buggy.

In the ensuing chase, the Dragonian Worshippers pursued Arin in a second vehicle, firing its cannon at Arin throughout the pursuit. Eventually, the worshippers succeeded in striking the buggy and ejecting Arin out from the vehicle. Thinking quickly, Arin used his Grapple Gun to maneuver across the canyon while also tricking the worshippers into blasting the cliff face into starting a rockfall upon them. With the worshippers stalled, Arin was able to return to the pit that he and Ras had set up camp by. After informing his master about the prior events, Ras urged Arin to embrace his anger for the battle that was to come, emphasizing that only anger could serve as the key to strength.

When the worshippers finally caught up to Arin, they began to drive towards him, but the ground below their vehicle suddenly gave way, falling into the pit. Arin had covered the pit up with leaves and vegetation, disguising it as flat ground. Although Ras admitted his impressment by this trick, he cautioned that such deceptions might not work in the future, nor under all other circumstances. As Arin began carrying Ras onward throughout the desert, Ras continued to emphasize the importance of anger and how he had much to teach Arin as the boy's master.

Trivia

Trivia[]

  • The issue was previously called "How Strong is Thunderfang?."
  • With the introduction of Glimwillow Cacti, this is the only Ninjago installment to somewhat acknowledge Garmadon comic series.
  • The comic takes place before Season 3, specifically before Arin faced off against Dorama's puppet in the Wastelands, due to him still having his Grapple Gun, but presumably after he was chased off by the Dragonians to the South Woods, as he was aware of them in the comic.
