Nya. She had already known the touch of Dark Matter. It was not so long ago that exposure to only a small amount of it corrupted her temporarily. If she carries that memory in the back of her mind on this quest, then this is where it should remain.”

Corrupted Ones are people and animals turned evil under an effect of Dark Matter.

History

History[]

Legacy of the Green Ninja[]

Return of the Overlord[]

At the beginning of The Final Battle, Garmadon and the Stone Army managed to capture Nya. Desiring to test out the effects of the Dark Matter firsthand, Garmadon used it to corrupt Nya before sending her off to delay the Ninja from following his forces to the beach.

Corrupted by the effects of Dark Matter, Nya faithfully carried out her duties in service to the Dark Lord, ambushing the ninja and fighting against them until she was encased in ice by Zane.

Elsewhere, Garmadon unleashed Garmatron's ultimate weapon to rain dark matter upon several cities in Ninjago, corrupting their populace and shifting the balance to evil.

Rise of the Spinjitzu Master[]

Entering Ninjago City virtually unopposed, the Overlord quickly overran and corrupted the city's entire populace, save for Dareth. Anticipating the arrival of the ninja, Nya manned one of Garmatron's turrets as part of the Overlord's defenses.

As the ninja assisted Lloyd in ascending Garmatron, which had since transformed into a massive tower, Jay and Cole were corrupted by the Overlord's breath, leaving Zane to hold them off. Kai too would be forced to stay behind to hold back Nya while Lloyd made the rest of the way to the top of the tower on his own.

Following the Overlord's defeat, all that had been corrupted by the Overlord were restored to normal.

Dark Matter Comics (non-canon)[]

Following his second defeat, the Overlord manifested once more in the sewers of Ninjago City. After possessing Rufus McCallister, the Overlord devised a new way to corrupt all of Ninjago. Summoning his Stone Army, the Overlord infected copies of the latest issue of Starfarer with dark matter before distributing it to unassuming customers. When the customers reached the last pages of the tainted comics, they were corrupted by the dark matter soaked pages.

The presence of corrupted citizens alerted Dareth, who immediately contacted the ninja for help. After defeating the Overlord once more, the Dark Lord fled McCallister's body and the corrupted citizens were restored to normal.

Before Dark Island Trilogy[]

After failing to retrieve the Teapot of Tyrahn, Clouse journeyed to the Dark Island with a new plan to bury the Temple of Light with the island's Dark Matter. Summoning Nadakhan's Sky Pirates to serve him, Clouse began mining the island of Dark Matter, with his actions contaminating the land and sea itself, corrupting many of its flora and fauna.

Dark Island Trilogy[]

Dark Island Trilogy - Part 1[]

On the shores of the Dark Island, Lloyd and Wu were pursued by a herd of corrupted gorillas who became enraged when Lloyd plucked a banana from one of their nearby trees. The gorillas pursued the two into a pit of quicksand before retreating, knowing that the pair's fate was sealed.

Elsewhere, Jay and Nya fought against a corrupted giant starfish and were then reunited with Ronin, who was promptly attacked by a corrupted leviathan. Jay was able to free Ronin from its tentacles, and the mercenary ran off to retrieve his Salvage M.E.C., using its weapon systems to force the beast to retreat into the sea.

Dark Island Trilogy - Part 2[]

As Lloyd and Wu continued their journey, Lloyd himself began to feel the effects of the dark matter, heightening his anger and temper. When they were attacked by a swarm of corrupted insects, Lloyd immediately blasted them with energy, shocking Wu who was not used to seeing this level of aggression from his nephew. Lloyd soon left Wu, declaring that he was going to find his mother on his own. Lloyd later discovered a mine for dark matter and he furiously defeated the Sky Pirates protecting the mine, mocking them all the while for the weakness.

After entering the mine and regrouping with Zane and Cole, Lloyd discovered his mother, Misako, as a prisoner within. Unfortunately she too had been influenced by the dark matter and refused to leave, stating that she desired to stay close with the dark forever. She then called the guards on the ninja but regained her senses shortly thereafter.

Two days later, Wu continued to drift alone down the River of Darkness, he was bitten by a corrupted mosquito and began to suffer from the effects of the dark matter himself.

Dark Island Trilogy - Part 3[]

After being rescued by Cole, Kai began to feel the effects of the dark matter, feeling a sense of anger and hopelessness. Cole managed to snap him out however by reminding him that Nya needed him.

The Clean-up![]

Two days after the Day of the Departed, a Leviathan, entangled in chains of an old crane and affected by the Dark Matter, attacked Ninjago Harbor, but returned to the sea after being freed from the chains by the ninja.

Appearance

Appearance[]

The appearance of corrupted ones depends on whether or not the being has been fully or partially corrupted. For beings who are fully corrupted, their eyes glow purple and their skin takes on a gray shade, with even their clothing becomes darker than normal. They may also experience an increased feeling of hostility or aggression towards others or shamble aimlessly like zombies.

Partially corrupted beings on the other hand, while their eyes glow purple like those that are fully corrupted, they still seem to maintain the rest of their normal appearances and traits, albeit with magnified feels of anger, hopelessness, and despair. Non-human animals that have been partially affected by dark matter also notably emit a purplish aura from their bodies.

Trivia

Trivia[]

  • Corrupted Ones can do Spinjitzu because of the Dark Matter, as seen with Nya.[1]
  • As shown in "Return of the Overlord," Mystake, a full-blooded Oni, is also not immune to the effects of Dark Matter.
    • However, Mystake's corruption was 6 years before the introduction of the Oni. With this in mind, it's possible Oni are not vulnerable to Dark Matter, since Mystake's Oni nature hadn't been written yet.
