Season 2: Legacy of the Green Ninja

The second season of Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu, subtitled Legacy of the Green Ninja[1] and alternatively known as Return of the Dark Lord[2] or Rise of the Green Ninja,[3] was preceded by Season 1 and succeeded by Season 3. Lloyd is the focus ninja and mascot character. In the first half of the season, Lord Garmadon serves as the main antagonist, and the Serpentine serves as the villainous faction. In the second half, the Overlord serves as the main antagonist, and the Stone Army serves as the villainous faction.

Lord Garmadon has disappeared with all Four Golden Weapons and now he controls the Serpentine. Meanwhile, the ninja intensify their training of young Lloyd so he will be strong enough to defeat Lord Garmadon in the final battle. To gain evil power, Lord Garmadon goes to the Golden Peaks to convert all Four Golden Weapons into the weapon of creation – the Mega Weapon.[4]

The first half of the season, that being the Mega Weapon arc, did not have any sets. This is the first and only time a significant story arc of a season did not have any accompanying sets.

The second half of the season was branded as "The Final Battle," with Golden Lloyd as the mascot character. The box art depicts the Dark Island, and most of the sets portray ninja vehicles or Stone Army vehicles. The collectible items are the Elemental Blades.

Smaller than most waves, this was the first to have each new variant of the original four ninja exclusive to a single set (not counting the previous NRG suits, which were exclusive to spinner sets).

  • This is the second installment to feature Lord Garmadon as the main antagonist, following the pilot episodes.
  • This is one of the two seasons to contain 13 episodes, the other being Rise of the Snakes.
  • This was originally intended to be the last season of Ninjago, as the franchise was planned to be discontinued in 2013. However, fan demand had convinced the creators to continue it.[5]
    • According to Tommy Andreasen, 2013 was only meant to be a "slow" year for Ninjago to allow Legends of Chima to grow.[6]
  • In the version of the intro used in episodes 14-18 before Lloyd was aged up, Wu's beard appeared more like the one on his minifigure. In Episode 19, it returned to its normal appearance similar to that of the Rise of the Serpentine intro.
  • For reasons unknown, the audio on North American physical releases of this season onward was about half a semitone to about a semitone lower in pitch.
  • The ninja have their Golden Weapons in the intro despite only having them in the actual season for a brief moment in "Wrong Place, Wrong Time."
  • This season is not called "Rise of the Green Ninja" because that would be too similar to "Rise of the Serpentine".[7]
  • This season has two arcs, one of which revolves around Garmadon's Mega Weapon and the Serpentine (episodes 14-19) and the other which is based on the Final Battle and the Stone Army (episodes 20-26).
  • Information regarding how the season was split up:
    • The Hageman Brothers explained the reason for this split, stating, "when we were obligated to start writing, we didn’t know who the baddies were (stone army). So to buy time, we had a buncha one offs with a new garmadon threat each episode."[8]
    • Tommy Andreasen explained it similarly, stating, "We didn't know where to go with the story so we wrote 80s tribute episodes until we found out."[9]
  • This is the only season to have a Blu-Ray release.
  • The ending of the season was always planned to be Lloyd saving Garmadon.[10]
  • A soundtrack album for this season was released in 2016.
  • On the DVD and Blu-Ray artwork of this season, Pythor is pictured, despite him having no appearances in this season.

Protagonists[]

  • Lloyd was the focus ninja throughout this season. This whole season was built up for the final battle taking place in Episode 26.
    • Lloyd was focused on in Episodes 15, 18, 20, 24, 25, and 26.
      • In Episode 15, he fought Captain Soto and grew more powerful after using Spinjitzu for the first time.
      • He helped the other Ninja return to their older selves in Episode 18. In turn, this also had Lloyd grow older as well.
      • In Episode 20, he meets his mother, Misako, for the first time and struggled with her absence throughout the episode. He ultimately accepted her by the end.
      • In Episode 24, he attempted to fight Garmadon, however, Lloyd froze after seeing his father injured.
      • He fought the Overlord for the first time in Episode 25, where they had a relatively even battle up until Lloyd was overpowered after seeing glimpses of his father, and eventually defeated by the Dark Lord.
      • In Episode 26, Lloyd gained access to the Golden Mech to use it in the final battle, however, it was ultimately destroyed. Afterwards with the help of the Ninja, he partook in the final battle and fought the Overlord, which he managed to unlock his Golden Power as well as his Golden Dragon. Lloyd ultimately defeated the Overlord and brought peace to Ninjago, and met his human father for the first time.
  • Zane has the largest role out of the original Ninja in this season.
    • Zane was focused on in Episode 22.
      • In episode 22, he meets his father, Dr. Julien, for the first time. The entire episode was spent on their relationship, which later Dr. Julien accompanies the Ninja on their journeys.
  • Kai has his own focus episode..
    • Kai was focused on in Episodes 19 and 23.
      • Episode 19 was about the things that happened to him in the pilot episodes that Lord Garmadon was trying to change. He later joined forces with the old Kai and fought Garmadon together, which helped the Ninja destroy the Mega Weapon.
      • In Episode 23, he used the Fire Mech Nya built him against the Stone Warriors. It was extremely useful in getting the Ninja to the Temple of Light.
  • Nya has a larger role than Jay and Cole..
    • Nya was captured in Episode 24 by the Stone Army which as a result, she was corrupted by Dark Matter and became a servant to the Overlord in Episodes 25 and 26. She regained her normal self after the defeat of the Overlord.
  • Jay and Cole have minor roles this season.
    • Jay has a heavier role in Episodes 14 and 16 with training Lloyd in each episode, but was not the focus character.
    • Cole has a heavier role in Episode 24 where he chases after a Stone Warrior for the Helmet of Shadows, but was not the focus character.
  • Wu had some capacity in the show (like his relationship with Garmadon and Misako in episode 21), but the appearance of Wu was less than the six main characters.
  • Misako had her first appearance in episode 20. She had capacity in Episodes 20 - 26 where she aided the Ninja and gave them information on their journeys, specifically on the Dark Island.

Antagonists[]

  • Lord Garmadon was the main antagonist of this season until Episode 20, in which the Overlord took over as the main antagonist of this season.
  • Skales was the secondary antagonist of this season until Episode 20, in which Lord Garmadon took over as the secondary antagonist of this season.
  • Other important antagonists include Fangtom (episodes 14-21), Skalidor (episodes 14-21), Acidicus (episodes 14-21), Captain Soto (episodes 15 and 17), the evil ninja (episode 16), the Grundle (episode 18), the Giant Stone Warrior (episode 20), and General Kozu (episodes 21-26).
  • The Serpentine were the villainous faction of this season until Episode 21. During and after Episode 21, the Stone Army took over as the villainous faction of the season.
  • Captain Soto's crew were the villainous faction of Episode 15, while making a minor appearance in Episode 17.
  • The Skulkin also made an appearance in Episode 19, due to the time travel plotline.
