Overview

“An electrical discharge between two points, sometimes a display of power between heaven and earth itself.”
Glen Lakin on Bluesky[1]

Lightning is one of the four main elements of Creation, and is derived from the Source Dragon of Energy.[1] It is associated with the colors blue, white, and yellow, and corresponds with the Nunchucks of Lightning, the Lightning Dragon, the Hydroelectric Dragon, and the Golden Ultra Dragon.

Users' abilities

Users' abilities[]

  • Electrokinesis - The user can create, generate, increase, convert/store, shape, and manipulate electricity of various intensities.
    • Technokinesis - One application of Lightning, as Jay taught Lloyd, is to overload, control, and power electrical devices or systems. Lloyd used his Lightning powers to overcharge a light bulb, allowing him to use the shards of glass to free himself from his bonds.[2] Jay was even able to use his power to create a specific image (a Steep Wisdom teapot) on multiple screens.[3]
    • Electrokinetic Attacks - The user can attack using Lightning.
      • Electric Blast - The user can release electricity over a specific target area which causes great damage and/or delivers great shockwaves of pure force.
      • Electrokinetic Bolt Projection - The user is able to create and project bolts of electricity and control the intensity/power of their projectiles, the bolts aren't weak but may not be as powerful as a full-powered attack.
      • Electrical Ball Projection - The user is able to project a ball of electricity as seen when Jay tried to break Cole free from Skales' hypnosis.[4] These balls can be concussive as when Nya used this against Nokt.[5]
        • Hypnosis Negation - As seen in "Home", it is possible to use these electrical balls to shock a person out of hypnosis.
        • Electric Bomb Generation - As seen in "Truth and Lies", the user can likely create or launch bombs of electricity, such as when Nya fired one that caused a small explosion on Nokt.
      • Electrokinetic Infusion - The user can infuse objects (usually a weapon), beings, body parts, vehicles,[6] or powers with electricity, empowering and energizing them and allowing the user to manipulate their qualities and efficiency and use electricity in various ways to attack.
        • Electric Strike - The user can use electricity to power a strike, allowing shock damage from the electricity used in the strike.
      • Electrokinetic Beam Emission - The user can produce and project beams of concentrated electricity, which can shock or cause electrocution, pierce through almost anything, or create destructive explosions upon impact.
      • Electrokinetic Wave Emission - The user can create waves, spirals, rings, pulses, blasts, balls, and bursts of electricity.
    • Electrokinetic Flight - The user can fly, glide, or levitate using electricity.[7]
      • Electrokinetic Levitation - The user can levitate using electricity.
    • Electrokinetic Resistance - The user is partially resistant against electricity and lightning.[8]
    • Electrified Surface - The user can send electricity through a surface (often the ground or a floor) to channel it, sending electric shocks to anything in contact with them or the surface.
    • Electric Conductivity - The user can safely conduct all forms of electricity through their bodies, self-generated or otherwise, which by extension makes them functionally invulnerable to electricity, no matter the voltage. They can also discharge electricity through conductive media (metal, water, etc).
      • Electric Channeling/Discharge - The user can channel electricity for various purposes and control its flow through any matter. Jay was able to channel his lightning powers through water to recharge the Hydro Bounty's battery despite the whole bay being flooded and Lloyd assuming his powers were useless underwater.
    • Electrokinetic Constructs - The user can create objects out of electricity, as seen when Jay created an electrical heart shape in "Codename: Arcturus".
      • Electro-Flyrogenesis/Electrokinetic Shield Construction - The user can generate a force field/shield of electricity as a defensive tactic (similarly to its elemental shield).
        • Elemental Shield - The user can create a Lightning elemental shield.
          • Radiation Resistance - The user's elemental shield can resist the radiation from entering the planet's atmosphere.
          • Space Survivability - The user's elemental shield likely allows them to survive in the vacuum of space, as seen in "The Titanium Ninja" while the Ninja were about to enter their planet's atmosphere.
    • Bio-Electrokinesis - The user can manipulate and generate electricity from their bodies.
      • Electrokinetic Speed - The user is able to use Lightning to achieve superhuman speed. Jay used this ability when he, Zane, and Cole were chasing the Skulkin after they stole three of the Golden Weapons.
      • Electric Recharge - The user is able to recharge batteries by infusing them with electricity, but this can prove dangerous in some situations.
        • Electrical Vision - The user appears to emanate electricity from their eyes while recharging batteries, as seen in "The Wrath of Kalmaar" when Jay's eyes started glowing with lightning.
      • Electrocution/Electric Shock - The user can release extreme electrical current to destroy almost anything.
      • Electrified Body/Electric Aura - When the user is in a state of rage or extreme emotion, their body will be infused and crackle with electricity.[9]
      • Electrokinetic Absorption/Electrical Attraction - The user can absorb electricity, while removing it from its source and into their body, and use it in various ways. While out in a storm, Jay attracted all the stray lightning directly into him and in "The Oni and the Dragon," he used the electricity he absorbed from a light to shut down Mr. E's motorcycle.
        • Lightning Redirection - It can also be used to redirect lightning to attack an adversary or as a defense.[8]
      • Scintillakinesis - The user can create, manipulate, and generate different sparks of electricity through a luminous disruptive electrical discharge.
        • Fireworks Generation - As shown by Nokt when he received Lightning after winning his match against Nya in "Truth and Lies," the user can release electrical sparks in a similar fashion to fireworks.
    • Harming Ghosts - The user can use lightning to harm ghosts, from the Cursed Realm or from the Spectral Lands, as Jay managed to electrocute Wrayth, breaking his chain flail, causing him to release Zane and fall into the Endless Sea. In "Day of the Departed", he managed to defeat Samukai with electricity-infused nunchucks while in "Chaos Reigns", he took out Zarkt’s ghost in the Cave of Bells in Mysterium using his Mech Dragon (even though it wasn't coated in Prismatic Ore) and used the mini-mech to also fight Zarkt.
  • Dragon Creation - The user can create a Lightning Dragon.

Via the users' True Potential[]

  • Electrokinetic Body - The user can temporarily transform their body completely into electricity.
    • Electroportation - This allows the user to also "teleport" short distances using electrical currents and possibly move through electrical circuits and wires.

Higher-level powers[]

  • Dragon Form - Like the rest of the users of the elements of Creation, Lightning Elementals can unlock their Dragon Form, though it can only work through a sense of unity and a sequence of movements.
    • Humanoid Dragon Physiology - Dragon Form will cause the user to become a humanoid dragon.
      • Wing Manifestation - Once in Dragon Form, the user gains wings on their back.
        • Flight - Using said wings, the user can fly.
      • Vengestone Immunity - In dragon form, the user's powers are unaffected by Vengestone.
      • Infectious Crystal Immunity - A user of Dragon Form is unaffected by infectious crystals.
      • Enhanced Elemental Powers - A user of Dragon Form has their Elemental Powers heavily enhanced.
        • Shockwave Generation - The user has the ability to create shockwaves. Jay used this against Pythor in “Dragon Form”.
      • Purification - A user of Dragon Form can undo corruption from the infectious crystals.
Weaknesses

Weaknesses[]

  • Deflection - Jay's lightning powers can be reflected back at him, as shown by Reflectra.
  • Underwater Environments - Lloyd mentioned that Lightning wouldn't be effective underwater.[10] But this can be unlikely as Jay was able to recharge the Hydro Bounty's battery despite the whole bay being flooded.
Symbol

Symbol[]

The symbol of Lightning is an octopus. The silhouette of the octopus and its tentacles resemble a storm cloud discharging lightning. It may refer to Jay's energetic and intelligent nature.

The symbol of Lightning shown in the Tournament of the Sources represents two lightning bolts.

Trivia

Trivia[]

  • Despite the element being shown as blue in the TV series, Lightning is mostly a yellow color in the sets. Although the yellow was later adapted into Dragons Rising, there is no in-universe reason for this as it is simply an animation detail.[11]
  • In his original Character Card, Lloyd's dominant element was listed as Lightning, though according to Tommy Andreasen, this isn't canon to the TV series.[12] However, Lloyd was shown using the Nunchucks of Lightning in Zane's dream in "Never Trust a Snake," and the Golden Weapons made green lightning when they revealed that Lloyd was the Green Ninja.
    • Additionally, in the "Meet the Heroes" video released for the 10th anniversary, it is stated that his original dominant element was lightning.
    • Despite no longer having Lightning, Lloyd was still able to generate green electricity to charge the Titan Mech's battery in "The Message", possibly because Energy is a combination of the four elements of Creation (including Lightning).[13][14]
  • Similarly, Lord Garmadon's Destruction is represented as lightning on the cards, and he was shown to be able to generate lightning in "The Green Ninja."
  • Jay's LEGO.com description for Rebooted stated, "When Jay uses his electrical powers to his fullest, he creates 1.21 gigawatts."[16] However, this may not be canon.[17]
    • 1.21 gigawatts is a reference to the power input required to operate the DeLorean time machine from the Back to the Future trilogy.
  • Lightning seems to be one of the three Elements (along with Energy and Fire) besides Water that are capable of harming ghosts. This was shown when Jay electrocuted Wrayth, causing him to release Zane and fall into the Endless Sea.
  • In the story about Jay that Fugi-Dove made up in "The Absolute Worst", Jay was shown riding on lightning and creating lightning ropes, although these are purely a part of Fugi-Dove's imagination.
  • Nuckal and Krazi are affiliated with Lightning in promotional material and the Ninjago Spinners game, though this is non-canon.
  • When asked about which element he would like to have, Tommy Andreasen said, "I kind of like lightning. Ever since I saw the Emperor do that in Return of the Jedi in 1983."[18]
  • Jay has been zapped by lightning a few times, in "Kingdom Come", "On a Wish and a Prayer", and "Sweatin' to the Goldies". This also happened in the issue 23 of the Ninjago Magazine. A ninja is also depicted being zapped by lightning on the spinner card, Power Surge.
  • One of the Ninjago Magazine shows that Lightning is able to go against Cinder's Shatterspin, though this comic is non-cannon.
  • Tommy Andreasen once stated in 2021 that, regarding Wojira's Fury of the Storm ability, "It takes wind (or quake) and water to produce a wave. It takes wind, water and lightning to make a perfect storm."[19] Years later, a fan asked Doc Wyatt on Bluesky if it could be assumed, according to Tommy's statement, that both Quake and Lightning were directly a part of this ability, to which Doc simply responded, "I buy this."[20] Later, he clarified stating that while Quake was not connected to this ability (specifically its aspects of Wave and Storm), Lightning is.[21]
  • Chris "Doc" Wyatt stated that the Source Dragon imprisoned by Imperium is not "the Lightning Source Dragon"[22] because even if he is the source of Lightning, his true title is the "Source dragon of Energy".[1]
  • Of the four Elements of Creation, Lightning has the least known Elemental Masters, having only two.
