Trivia[]

  • Regarding the creation of the song and its remixes:
    • The original version of the song had female vocals and was not related to Ninjago.[1]
    • The original 2010 demo of "The Weekend Whip" had vocals sung by Jeppe Riddervold, and the 2011 demo had the vocals sung by Daniel Castady.
    • From the original whip to "The Temporal Whip," the song was written by Zack Jones and Erin Chapman (apart from The Rift Whip), and from "The Wicked Whip" onward, it was written by Jeppe Riddervold and Erin Chapman (including The Rift Whip).
    • The earlier remixes were not named by The Fold, but the band was able to have more control over the names for the past few versions.[2]
    • The Fold wasn't involved in creating the Michael AM remix or The Ghost Whip.[3][4]
    • There were several remixes of The Weekend Whip for Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu that did not end up being the final version.[5]
      • The last one of these, which may have been inspired by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, was known as "Ninjago Intro Hard" and used the "ninja, ninja, ninja, ninja" part of "After the Blackout." Though LEGO and the crew on Ninjago approved of it, Dan and George Castady weren't satisfied with it.[6]
  • Regarding the song's use in the show:
    • The remixes used in the show's intros often differ slightly from the full versions, which can be heard in the SoundCloud playlist released by The Fold containing every intro version of The Weekend Whip (minus SFX).[7]
      • Except in Rebooted, Possession, and The Hands of Time, every intro version of the song has a different version of the main Ninjago Overture melody at the end, which is not present in The Fold's versions from the aforementioned playlist. The March of the Oni opening theme released by Jay Vincent includes the melody,[8] confirming it is an addition by the composers rather than The Fold.
    • Sons of Garmadon is the first season that does not have a remix of The Weekend Whip. The second season to not have the Weekend Whip is Hunted, the third is March of the Oni, and the fourth is Seabound.
      • In Sons of Garmadon, the melody of the chorus ("Jump up, kick back, whip around and...") plays in the first few seconds.
      • According to Tommy Andreasen, the song was not included because it would not match the season's tone; specifically, he noted that "a positive poppy song" would not fit the beginning "Dead Man's Squall," which began with Zane's apparent death.[9]
    • March of the Oni is the only season to not have The Weekend Whip played either as the theme song or within the show.
    • The episode "Ninjago Confidential" used a jazz remix of The Weekend Whip composed by Jay Vincent, known as "The Noir Whip".[10][11]
    • In Crystalized, the song's main lyrics, "Jump up, kick back, whip around, and spin," are the key, along with having all the allies, to unlocking the ninja's Dragon Form.
    • The song makes its first appearance in Ninjago: Dragons Rising in Season 4 in the intro. However, it's mixed with lyrics with We Rise, the typical Dragons Rising intro song. This was done to celebrate the 15th anniversary and to also celebrate the original Ninja finally reuniting alongside the new Ninja.
  • The Weekend Whip was re-released for The LEGO Ninjago Movie as "The Weekend Whip Remastered, though it sounds identical to the original version.[12]
  • A Kidz Bop cover of the song was released in partnership with LEGOLAND Florida Resort.[13]
  • Dan Castady has shared other unofficial versions of song in his YouTube series "The Weekly Whip," these being "The Folk Whip[14] and "The Riot Whip".[15]
