Sky Folk

Overview

“I'm only a mere figurehead. The citizens of our proud city are the heart of Shintaro.”
Vangelis to the ninja and Wu, "Into the Dark"

The Sky Folk are humanoid people who inhabit the Kingdom of Shintaro.

History

History[]

Centuries ago,[1] the Sky Folk established their home in Shintaro Mountain, well before Hazza D'ur made it his own by building the Dungeons of Shintaro.[3] They built the Kingdom of Shintaro, choosing to isolate themselves from the rest of Ninjago. This seclusion caused many inhabitants of Ninjago to think that the city and its people were nothing more than a legend.[4]

Master of the Mountain[]

By the request of his daughter, Vania, King Vangelis invited the Ninja to Shintaro as guests to Vania's upcoming birthday. As the ninja made their way to the fabled city, they were attacked by a flock of Dire Bats but were fortunately saved by the timely intervention of Hailmar and the Army of Shintaro, who then escorted the ninja to the mountain kingdom. Upon their arrival, the ninja met with Vangelis and Vania, the latter of whom revealed that she was a huge fan of the ninja and Cole in particular.

Unbeknownst to anyone present at the time, Vangelis operated deep within the mountain's dungeons as the Skull Sorcerer, holding the mountain's native races, the Geckles and the Munce, enslaved to mine out Vengestone in order to pay for the opulence of the city that rested above.

After Cole spotted Gleck within his guest room, Vania encouraged him to venture into the Dungeons of Shintaro alongside her in search of the mysterious visitor. After a series of misadventures, however, Cole and the ninja became privy to the machinations of the Skull Sorcerer while remaining unaware of his true identity, and were split into two groups; while Cole and Vania returned to the surface to request the aid of Vangelis, the rest of the ninja stayed within the dungeons to help the enslaved Geckles and Munce. Unfortunately, Cole and Vania would discover to their mutual horror that the Skull Sorcerer was none other than King Vangelis himself! The king would then cast Cole down the pit, banishing him into the bowels of the mountain, with Vania following him afterwards in pursuit, turning her back on her father.

Determined not to allow the remaining ninja to succeed in freeing his slave workers, Vangelis, as the Skull Sorcerer, stormed the dungeons himself and began hunting the other five alongside his army of Re-Awakened. After a series of conflicts and pursuits, the wicked king succeeded in capturing the ninja, the Geckles, and the Munce. Bringing them all together in the vengestone mines, Vangelis boastfully revealed his identity to the remaining ninja and expressed his intentions of executing them as a show of force to his slave laborers.

Meanwhile, Vania managed to escape from Rock-Bottom thanks to Cole, and their group emerged in the Palace gardens while startling an elderly Sky Folk Couple who had been taking a walk there. Cole and his crew would then depart in search of Vangelis and the other ninja while Vania stayed behind to talk sense into Hailmar and the Army of Shintaro, who had previously been ordered to arrest the ninja on sight.

Deep within the Dungeons of Shintaro, Cole confronted Vangelis and dueled him with the Blades of Deliverance. Vania soon joined in the fight alongside the Army of Shintaro, who had since been convinced that their king was not who he seemed to be. In the ensuing battle, Cole was able to defeat Vangelis with the Spinjitzu Burst and destroyed the Skull of Hazza D'ur - the source of Vangelis' dark powers. Left powerless, Vangelis was arrested by Hailmar and Vania was coronated as the new Queen of Shintaro, one who promised to always stand up to those who are cruel and unjust.

Seabound[]

Vania and Hailmar led Cole to the palace's secure vault so that the latter could safely contain the Storm Amulet within. When Hailmar inquired about the artifact, Cole would only state in reply that it was something that should never again see the light of day, unaware that the amulet he was in possession of was the fake duplicate he and the ninja had created.

Crystalized[]

Over a year after his defeat and subsequent imprisonment, Vangelis was visited by a Crystal Spider and was presented with a new version of the mask he once wore as the Skull Sorcerer. Presented with a new opportunity at vengeance against the ninja, the fallen king gladly accepted the offer and joined the Council of the Crystal King. For his first mission, Vangelis was dispatched alongside Aspheera, Pythor, and The Mechanic to steal the powerless Golden Weapons from the Monastery of Spinjitzu. After defeating the Monastery's defenders, Vangelis claimed the Scythe of Quakes and returned to the Crystal Island with it to prepare for the coming of the Crystal King.

After the Crystal King's return, Vangelis was empowered and gifted with new armor to cement his status as one of the King's generals. Afterwards, he actively participated in the Crystal King's attempt to conquer Ninjago, but was defeated during the Final prophecy of Quanish the Elder once more by Cole.

Vangelis' second defeat was aided in part by the Army of Shintaro and his own daughter, Vania, who responded to Cole's request for help against the Crystal King and his Crystal army. Heeding Cole's request, the Army of Shintaro fought against the Crystal Warriors on the ground while Vania assisted Cole in battle against her father. After the Council's defeat, Cole ran over to Vania and the two embraced one another in a warm hug.

Following the total defeat of the Crystal King, Vania and the Army of Shintaro celebrated their victory and later assisted the ninja in rebuilding their monastery, the same one that Vangelis played a hand in destroying.

Culture

Culture[]

The Sky Folk are a generally peaceful and secluded group of people, living high up in Shintaro Mountain, located in Northern Ninjago. They are known to reside in the Ivory City of Shintaro, often referred to as a mythical place that has built a reputation for it's beauty. Due to the mountain's foreign location and the dangers posed by the surrounding fauna, humans had presumably not been able to travel to the kingdom until recently, causing the kingdom and its inhabitants to fade into legend.

However, despite their secluded nature, the Sky folk are shown to be relatively welcoming towards outsiders and change, allowing the Geckles and the Munce to integrate into their culture on short notice, and often speaking in a polite and eloquent manner even towards foreign visitors. Despite this politeness, it seems as if certain individuals do somewhat look down upon other species in a way, presumably due to seeing them as being less advanced.

They seem to prefer peaceful lives, and do not like endangering others, preferring to avoid human contact entirely should they be harmed in an attempt to reach the kingdom, and often only invite hand selected individuals so that they may guarantee their safety.

A noteworthy part of Sky Folk culture is their wings, which seems to often be mentioned in stories related to Shintaro. The wings themselves are a detachable contraption that is placed on the back and allows for flight through what seems to be a form of magic or enchantment, and is commonly used for traversal by the Sky Folk. Besides the wings, they are known to use other forms of magic-infused objects, such as seemingly enchanted cards. Although not seen, it is implied that they also have access to technology, as Zane states that their communicators do not have the range to contact Shintaro.

Due to the nature of the Ivory City, the Sky Folk are a fairly rich people. Although the currency they use is unknown, they are known to obtain it through the Vengestone mines under the city, trading the Vengestone within for the amount needed to make sure the city continues to flourish.

Stories about a wizard by the name of Hazza D'ur and about the history of the mines below the city are commonly told by candlelight, with there presumably being multiple variations to them, with some noteworthy ones recounting tales of how he was defeated, and that his bones still lied below.[5]

The Sky Folk's government seemingly consists of their royal family, who presumably watch over much of the city. While the King is not marked with any crown or tiara, the beauties wear large white-blue-gold tiaras on their heads. Princesses or Princes are also not marked in any way. The city's military force, the Army of Shintaro, takes orders directly from the royal family. However, not much else is known about it.

Not much about their traditions is known, but they do celebrate birthdays.[4]

Appearance

Appearance[]

The most notable traits about the Sky Folk that differ them from humans and their yellow skin, are their white skin. They have small notches above their eyes, although it is unclear what these represent, and likewise, most of them have cheek bones. Their eyebrows are black and either boomerang-shaped (mostly females) or have a pointed triangular shape (mostly males). Females have visible dark upper lips.

They have four known hair colors, that being black, brown, and reddish-brown, as well as pearl gold, although less common. Alongside these, they can gain gray hair when growing old, like many other species.

Another notable feature is their wings. Although they are not a part of them, many Sky Folk wear them. Their clothing appears to consist of kimono-esque garbs, normally in colors such as sky blue, cyan or indigo - with the only exception being the clothing of the royal family, which is white - commonly with cloud-like patterns. The guards wear a different form of clothing that consists of gold armor laid upon what is presumably chainmail, with purple ornamentations, a purple belt, and a large helm. In some cases they may also wear a red string tying together the gold armor over their torso in the form of a vest.

A select few of the species are known to have gems on their forehead, although it does not seem to be a shared trait for the entire species. It is unknown if these are part of them or simply ornamentation.
