Crystal Island

Overview

This article is about the temple. For the set, see 71771 The Crystal King Temple.
“Take me to the place where you revealed your true face for the first time.”

The Crystal Island (also known as the Crystal Temple) was an ancient temple. It was previously called the Oni Temple, constructed by the Oni when they arrived to Ninjago in search of the First Spinjitzu Master. Located deep within Primeval's Eye, the temple is where the Oni Mask of Hatred, the third and final Oni Mask, was kept.

After Harumi was resurrected by the Overlord, she accompanied him to the temple and it became the lair of the crystal army, energized by the central crystal. Later, the Overlord used its powers to make it floating. However, when the Golden Ultra Dragon defeated the Overlord, the temple was ultimately destroyed.

History

History[]

Background[]

Sometime after the First Spinjitzu Master fled from the Realm of Oni and Dragons and created Ninjago, the Oni pursued him. Along the way, they constructed the Oni Temple, where they carved their origins onto its walls. They also stored the Oni Mask of Hatred within, which could only be obtained by a being with Oni blood within them.

Sons of Garmadon[]

The Quiet One[]

Armed with a map to the temple, Lloyd and Harumi journeyed across Primeval's Eye in search of the temple. After falling down a waterfall and reaching land, Lloyd discovers the Oni Temple hidden between the waterfalls.

Game of Masks[]

Lloyd and Harumi manage to locate the Oni Mask of Hatred within the Oni Temple after passing several obstacles. Harumi attempts to grab it, but a force makes it so she cannot. She then explains to Lloyd that someone with Oni blood can obtain the mask. After Lloyd takes the mask, he soon begins to question Harumi on how she knew that he was part Oni. After a moment of revelations, Lloyd discovers Harumi's true intentions and realizes that she is the Quiet One. A fight then ensues, with it ending with Lloyd throwing the Oni Mask of Hatred over the side of the platform. However, Harumi dives after it, catching it while she manages to use her knife to hold onto the side of the platform.

Armed with the Oni Mask of Hatred, Harumi puts it on, using its powers to jump back onto the platform. Lloyd questions what the mask did to her, where she reveals that it has made her invincible to all forms of damage. After a very brief fight, Harumi reveals to Lloyd that she wants him to feel the pain she has felt following the death of her parents by having Lord Garmadon destroy Lloyd. Harumi then proceeds to flee from the temple with the mask, utilizing her invincibility to flood the temple in an effort to drown Lloyd. However, Lloyd is able to escape in time.

A Sinister Shadow (flashback)[]

After the Liberation of Ninjago, the Overlord revived Harumi after she died and instructed her to travel across Primeval's Eye and go to the Oni Temple. Once arriving, the Overlord told Harumi to place the crystal he gave her onto the Oni Mask of Hatred's pedestal.

Crystalized[]

The Council of the Crystal King[]

Lloyd, in the guise of The Mechanic, was led to the Council of the Crystal King inside the Crystal Temple. Unfortunately, Lloyd's identity was revealed, forcing him to fight his way out from the temple. In spite of his best efforts, Lloyd was defeated and captured by the other members of the Council.

A Sinister Shadow[]

Bound in Vengestone chains, Lloyd was taken to the Central crystal's chamber where Harumi then revealed to him the full extent of her preparations for the coming of the Crystal King.

The Spider's Design[]

After subduing Lloyd, Mister F and Harumi moved him to a Vengestone cage suspended above a pit of lava inside the temple's control room. There, Lloyd briefly watched as Mister F monitored multiple surveillance feeds before Harumi entered the room to gloat to Lloyd's face. Eventually, Harumi dispatched a horde of Crystal Spiders onto the other four ninja and seemingly killed them, relishing in Lloyd's pain as she explained her actions to him.

This finally enraged Lloyd enough into harnessing his dormant powers over Destruction, enabling him to break free of his cage and fight toe to toe against Harumi and Mister F. After overwhelming the two, Lloyd stood over Harumi and prepared to kill her but regained enough of his senses to reassert control over himself. Unfortunately, this allowed for Mister F to recover and shoot Lloyd down again with his crystal gun.

Darkness Within[]

Harumi moved Lloyd to the chamber containing the Central Crystal, suspending him from the chamber's ceiling. By the time Lloyd regained consciousness, the Council of the Crystal King had returned with the Golden Weapons to release their dark master. Following Harumi's instructions, the Council placed the weapons atop four pedestals and Aspheera initiated the ritual to allow the Crystal King to manifest and take physical form once more. As he emerged from the Central Crystal, the eponymous Crystal King tested the limits of his powers and let out a sinister, guttural laugh as he turned his sights onto Lloyd and repeated the very words Lloyd had said to him all those years ago: "It ends now."

The Coming of the King[]

As a demonstration of his power, the Crystal King ripped the Crystal Temple out from the ground and levitated it into the air, transforming it into the Crystal Island. Lloyd then attempted to escape from the King and his Council, rushing through the halls of the temple while fighting off the pursuing Council members in the process. Eventually, Lloyd managed to reach the gates and leapt into the surrounding jungle of Primeval's Eye with Harumi as his prisoner.

Return to Primeval's Eye[]

The Crystal Island drifted across the jungle of Primeval's Eye where it was spotted by Wu, Lloyd, and Nya.

Crystastrophe[]

As the island floated past an isolated village, the Crystal King decided to use the opportunity to begin his invasion of Ninjago. As expected, the Ninja arrived to confront their enemies, but were unable to inflict any meaningful damage. Zane attempted to approach the island in his jet, only to discover the island was protected by a type of energy shielding that deflected his jet's weaponry and drained it of power as well.

A Lesson in Anger[]

The Crystal Island was floating over Ninjago City.

Brave But Foolish[]

The ninja launched an assault on the Crystal army and the Crystal Island as they invaded Ninjago City. During the assault, Zane attacked the island once again with his jet, inflicting some damages to the island with his upgraded weaponry. Now that the ninja knew they could damage the island, they launched hooks into its sides from Destiny's Bounty to begin towing it out from the city limits. In response to these attacks, the Crystal King deployed the island's garrison of Dragonides against his foes.

In the ensuing battle, Wu was flung off the Destiny's Bounty, but he deployed his armor's glider to sail towards the Crystal Island, landing against its sides and scaling his way to the top with the Dragonbone Blade. After ascending to the summit, Wu engaged the Crystal King in a fierce battle that ended with Wu being knocked from the island. Finally angered by his foes' persistence, the Crystal King summoned his might to unleash a blast of Darkness from the island's base upon all of Ninjago City and filling the entire city with Infectious crystals. With the ninja's attack all but foiled, the Crystal King returned to his throne and proclaimed that they were now at the beginning of the end.

Distress Calls[]

After hearing that the ninja failed to contact their allies, Wu looks at the Crystal Island, wondering if there's another way to win against the crystal army.

An Issue of Trust[]

Pythor returned to the Crystal Island to find the Mechanic, Aspheera, and Vangelis already gathered before the Crystal King and his throne. Upon noticing Pythor's return, the Crystal King beckoned for the Anacondrai to join his fellow councilmembers, a request Pythor heeded with gladness. Unfortunately, he and the other three soon discovered that the Crystal King sought to berate and destroy them for their repeated failures in locating the ninja. Luckily, Harumi and Mister F were able to appease the King by informing him that they had intercepted a message which pinpointed the location of the ninja and their Resistance. Satisfied by this discovery, the Crystal King dispatched the Council and began moving the island towards the Newspaper warehouse.

As the final battle began to unfold on the ground, Harumi returned to the island to inform the Crystal King that the battle had begun. To their surprise, however, Lloyd and Garmadon had discreetly infiltrated the top of the island while the entire Crystal army fought on the ground. Father and son then attacked the Crystal King and smashed one of the island's crystals over him. After some initial bemusement that Garmadon had chosen to fight alongside the ninja, the Crystal King roared into battle, vowing that Garmadon would perish alongside the ninja for his choice.

Dragon Form[]

Garmadon and Lloyd began their attack against the Crystal King. Although they were able to inflict some damage upon his human-sized form, the Crystal King raised the stakes by transforming into a significantly larger, and more powerful, centaur-like form. The battle soon turned against Lloyd and Garmadon, but Harumi turned on the Crystal King after he boasted about being responsible for corrupting the Great Devourer and setting Garmadon down the path of evil. Unfortunately, even with Harumi's aid, Garmadon and Lloyd continued to struggle in their battle against their powerful foe.

Roots[]

Atop of the Crystal Island, Lloyd, Garmadon, and Harumi fought desperately against the Crystal King's powerful new centaur form. Unfortunately, the battle was heavily weighed in the Crystal King's favor as he effortlessly pummeled his foes into submission. During the battle, Garmadon was seemingly killed by the Crystal King, angering Lloyd enough to finally trigger his transformation into Oni form. Unfortunately, Lloyd regained control over himself after seeing his reflection and in horror, he reverted back to normal. This, unfortunately, enabled the Crystal King to nearly blast Lloyd clean off the island entirely, only barely hanging onto the Oni shaped gate below.

With Lloyd, Garmadon, and Harumi all defeated, the Crystal King turned his focus back into channeling his powers into the central crystal as he moved the island high above Ninjago City to finally crystallize and corrupt all life down below. Although the ninja tried to stop the blast of Darkness by channeling their respective elemental powers through the Golden Weapons into a powerful beam of Creation, the Crystal Island's Darkness won out and corrupted all life in the city below. With his victory nearly all but assured, the Crystal King now turned his attention back towards his treacherous herald and prepared to kill her.

At that moment, Lloyd interrupted the Crystal King by riding atop of the newly summoned Golden Ultra Dragon, surprising the King who angrily spat out his disbelief over Lloyd's survival. An intense battle then broke out between Darkness and Creation around the Crystal Island, ending with the prevalence of Creation and the destruction of the Crystal King's physical body. With the Crystal King's defeat, the Crystal Island itself immediately began to crumble before finally exploding into a burst of golden light.

Trivia

Trivia[]

  • As the Crystal Island, it was briefly called the Crystal Palace in "Crystastrophe."
  • The Crystal Island is reminiscent of Mount Cavora from Legends of Chima, as both are rocky mountains floating in the sky, with smaller rocks orbiting around them and the face of a certain being carved into them.
    • However, according to Tommy Andreasen the Crystal Island is not based on Mount Cavora as "this is temple which rose out of the ground."[3]
  • It seems to act as the dark counterpart to the Temple of Light, as the Temple of Light is associated with the dragons and was used by the First Spinjitzu Master while the Oni Temple is associated with the Oni and was used by the Overlord and also, it's placed on the opposite half of the Dark Island.
    • When asked about the destruction of the Crystal Island and how it would affect the Balance similarly to the Temple of Light in the Dark Island Trilogy, Tommy Andreasen stated that he doesn't know what would happen whether there will be consequences or not.[4]
  • In "Game of Masks", the Oni shown on the carvings in the Oni Temple are similar to the Vengestone Guards and the Dragonides in Crystalized. It's unknown whether Harumi designed the Crystal Warriors after the Oni carvings or if it's just a coincidence.
