Overview
Aspheera is the former leader of the Pyro Vipers and a Hypnobrai[1] sorceress. In her youth, she forged a friendship with the young Wu in a bid to learn Spinjitzu and secretly overthrow Mambo V. As punishment for her crime, Aspheera was imprisoned in the pyramid for millennia, after which she was accidentally freed by the ninja. She promptly stole Kai's element of fire, allowing her to resurrect her forces as Pyro Vipers.
Aspheera swore revenge on Wu and sieged Ninjago City with her army. Eventually, her rampage reached the hangar bay, where she attacked Wu and the ninja. Using the second Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu, Zane were able to incapacitate Aspheera.
Sometime after, the ninja freed Aspheera from prison in request to return Nya back to her human form by stealing her elemental powers with her staff. After this, she returned to the pyramid she was once imprisoned in, before she was invited to join the Council of the Crystal King. During the battle against the ninja and the Resistance, Aspheera was defeated by Kai and frozen by Zane.
History
History[]
Aspheera learning Spinjitzu with Wu
Early life[]
Thousands of years ago, Aspheera encountered the young Wu and Garmadon after they were imprisoned for trespassing into the Serpentine's territory. Aspheera told them that she was a trainee sorceress serving Mambo V and expressed her interest in the secrets of Spinjitzu. Despite their hesitation, she offered to help them by opening the door in exchange for friendship rather than monetary compensation, emphasizing that Serpentine and humans could be friends. She requested their trust and the sharing of Spinjitzu secrets as a sign of friendship. Garmadon eagerly agreed to the deal, urging Aspheera to let them out. She then turned to Wu, insisting that he also promise to share the secrets. Wu, unsure, reluctantly made the promise. Aspheera casted a spell, unlocking the door, and Wu and Garmadon swiftly made their escape, returning home.
While Garmadon did not keep his promise, Wu returned to uphold his end of the deal, and she and Wu became friends. He taught her Spinjitzu, though he made her promise not to use it for evil.
Aspheera overthrowing Mambo V
However, Aspheera disregarded this promise entirely and instead used her Spinjitzu to overthrow Mambo V, ultimately becoming the new ruler. Aspheera confidently addressed the Hypnobrai, disappointed in Mambo V's inability to uphold the truce. She highlighted his lack of action as a sign of weakness, while simultaneously showcasing her own strength and power through her mastery of Spinjitzu. With a single swift spin, she effortlessly toppled Mambo, leaving the Hypnobrai in awe of her abilities. With the Hypnobrai at her command, Aspheera launched an invasion in Ninjago.
Later that night, Aspheera planned to rename Ninjago after herself once she has established her rule over it. Wu and Garmadon snuck into the pyramid, confronting Aspheera about breaking her promise not to use Spinjitzu for evil. Aspheera questioned whether it was truly evil to be strong and ambitious, to rise above the weak and seize control. She believed that Wu had much to learn about the ways of the world. Wu, however, retorted that he had learned to never trust Serpentine from Aspheera. In response, Aspheera ordered the Hypnobrai to attack Wu and Garmadon. Garmadon chose to face the guards, leaving Wu to face Aspheera alone. Aspheera taunted him, challenging him to defeat her. Wu revealed that she didn't know everything, surprising her with a Forbidden Scroll and his mastery of Forbidden Spinjitzu. The clash between their Spinjitzu sent Aspheera flying. Aspheera accused Wu of deceiving her by promising to teach her Spinjitzu, but Forbidden Spinjitzu was beyond her expectations. Wu defended himself, stating that he didn't deceive Aspheera, but rather chose not to reveal everything to her. They continued to battle, with Wu ultimately overpowering her. Realizing her defeat, Aspheera yielded, acknowledging Wu's victory. Wu, showing mercy, chose not to strike her with his staff. Aspheera, relieved and defeated, lay down on the ground. King Mambo V was returned to his throne, and peace was once again restored to Ninjago while Aspheera was subsequently imprisoned.
Aspheera's defeat
Wu visited Aspheera in her cell, where she pleaded desperately for Wu's help, reminding him of the assistance she had provided him weeks ago. However, Wu remained resolute, informing her that King Mambo had decreed her punishment. Aspheera continued to implore Wu, begging for her release. Despite her claims of freeing him and Garmadon, Wu chose to walk away, leaving Aspheera to her fate. Feeling betrayed, Aspheera unleashed a torrent of insults, vowing to seek revenge on Wu, even if it took a thousand years.[2] She entered a state of magical entombment in a pyramid that kept her alive for thousands of years. At some point after this, Aspheera had been commemorated on a stone tablet outside of the pyramid.[3]
Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu[]
Boobytraps and How to Survive Them[]
Aspheera stealing Kai's Elemental Power of Fire
After the ninja successfully solved the puzzle, Aspheera was set free from her tomb. Eager to find Wu, she demanded to know his whereabouts. Lloyd, confused by her question, asked for clarification. Aspheera referred to Wu as the Treacherous Deceiver, emphasizing her anger and desire for revenge. In exchange for the information, she promised to show mercy to the ninja. Lloyd's uncertainty about the Treacherous Deceiver's identity was met with a blast of Aspheera's magic. The force propelled Lloyd into a nearby wall. The rest of the ninja tried to counterattack using their Elemental Powers, but Aspheera thwarted their efforts. She focused her attention on Kai, recognizing him as a Fire Elemental, and was met with a barrage of fireballs. Aspheera absorbed the flames with her staff, enjoying the warmth after her prolonged confinement. With a powerful shockwave, she sent the other ninja reeling and lifted Kai into the air, absorbing his Fire. Despite their attempts to stop her, Aspheera repelled the ninja, successfully assimilating Kai's powers, leaving him unconscious on the ground as her scaly body became golden. The sorceress expressed her gratitude toward Kai for his Elemental Powers. She then used her staff to lift the ninja up and chain them to a wall. As the Hypnobrai bid them farewell, she wished the ninja to enjoy their time in the pyramid as much as she did.
Aspheera came across Clutch Powers and demanded to be taken to the nearest village, but Clutch informed her that there was nothing for miles around. However, he mentioned that Ninjago City was the closest option. Aspheera then insisted on being taken there, but Clutch hesitated, refusing to comply. In response, Aspheera threatened him with her staff. Clutch, trying to protect himself, displayed his ancient Minkan Amulet of Protection, claiming that it would shield him from harm. Aspheera questioned his certainty, causing Clutch to express his hope that the person who gave him the amulet hadn't lied about its powers. The Hypnobrai sorceress, determined to uncover the truth, decided to take action. She cast a spell, causing a sudden eruption of lava from the pyramid. In the midst of the chaos, Fire Fang emerged, and Aspheera climbed onto the throne atop the giant snake, declaring her intention to seek revenge as she attacked Ninjago City.
Snaketastrophy[]
Aspheera finding out where the scroll was located
Upon Aspheera's arrival in Ninjago City, she began conjuring Elemental Cobras to attack the city. She demanded that Wu be brought to her and was surprised when an Elemental Cobra presented her with a sign showing a Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu. Aspheera recognized the scroll as the weapon Wu used against her millennia ago and demanded to know where the Ninjago Museum of History was located, determined to obtain the scroll and use it against her former friend. Aspheera then caught Vinny and Gayle, who declared that she's not afraid of her. Aspheera introduced herself and warns Gayle to be afraid of her. Gayle mentioned the ninja and implied that they will stop her. In response, Aspheera revealed that she imprisoned the ninja in her pyramid and left them to die. Gayle Gossip expressed disbelief that Aspheera was able to defeat the ninja. The ancient sorceress confidently dismissed Gayle's faith in the ninja and demanded to know the location of the museum, which Vinny fearfully provided. Aspheera ordered the Elemental Cobras to capture them.
On the news, Aspheera was perplexed by the camera's operation. Vinny offered reassurance, advising her to simply speak her thoughts. Taking the opportunity, Aspheera addressed the citizens of Ninjago, disclosing the existence of the Treacherous Deceiver within their midst. She candidly admitted that revenge against him had consumed her thoughts during her time of entombment. Furthermore, she vehemently vowed to exact revenge on him or, alternatively, unleash fiery destruction upon the entirety of Ninjago.
Powerless[]
Fighting the ninja
Having taken Gayle and Vinny hostage, Aspheera makes them take her to the Ninjago Museum of History to find the Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu. When they arrive, the Hypnobrai doesn't see the Scroll and starts to destroy all the artifacts in the museum. While doing so, she inadvertently knocks down a Serpentine sarcophagus, which opens up to reveal Char's body. She then revives Char, who leads her to the Scroll. When they arrive at the room with the scroll, Aspheera is angrily surprised to see that the ninja have escaped the erupting pyramid.
The rest of the ninja (except Kai) fight off the Pyro Vipers as Aspheera and Lloyd clash for the Scroll. In the end, Aspheera manages to get the Scroll and then traps the ninja under rubble as she orders three Elemental Cobras to finish them.
Ancient History[]
Aspheera with Char
From their vantage point atop a towering building, Aspheera and Char observed the citizens of Ninjago City scurrying about in fear. Aspheera dismissed the idea of conquering Ninjago City. Instead, she seeks to repay Wu's treachery by banishing him to the Never-Realm using the power of the Forbidden Scroll. Char questioned how they will locate Wu. Aspheera revealed her plan to use the first Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu, which still bears Wu's scent. Aspheera commanded Fire Fang to lead her to Wu. Fire Fang, guided by Wu's scent, pointed at the Monastery of Spinjitzu. Filled with anticipation, Aspheera took her place on the throne, knowing that her long-awaited revenge is within reach. She urged Fire Fang to lead her toward Wu.
When the ninja arrived after leaving the museum, Aspheera couldn't help but feel annoyed by their constant interference. Determined to put an end to their meddling, she commanded Fire Fang to obliterate them. Nya diverted Aspheera's attention, buying Lloyd enough time to retrieve the Forbidden Scroll. Lloyd swiftly made his way towards it, hoping to gain an advantage against Aspheera. Despite Lloyd's efforts, Aspheera overpowered him with her Forbidden Spinjitzu. As the ninja retreated, Aspheera continued her relentless march towards the Monastery.
Under Siege[]
Aspheera entering the Monastery of Spinjitzu
Aspheera was on top of Fire Fang (who spewed out fireballs) while Elemental Cobras approached the monastery. After reaching her destination, she told Fire Fang to destroy the temple's doors. P.I.X.A.L. then activated water guns and rubber Shurikens to stop the Elemental Cobras from burning down the doors. Aspheera uses her staff to get rid of the defense weapons. When Fire Fang destroys the doors, the ninja are forced to retreat to the hangar bay. Once the Pyro Vipers go inside, Aspheera tells them to find Wu. Having no luck in finding him, Char complains that they can't find him and suggests that they should give up. Aspheera ejected fire at Char but misses, hitting the dartboard that opens to the Underground Base instead. Once she saw the elevator, Char presses the button and they both wait for the elevator to open, but it couldn't due to Aspheera accidentally eradicating the button.
The Explorers Club[]
Aspheera with her army
After getting inside the elevator of the Monastery, Aspheera and the Pyro Vipers try to break down the doors by slamming Elemental Cobras into it. While they were trying to break down the doors, she uses her magic to lift Char up and slam him to the door.
Vengeance is Mine![]
Aspheera fighting Lloyd
Alerted by Jay's sneeze, she finds Wu and the ninja hiding under the vents. She remarks on how she dreamed of this moment before P.I.X.A.L. knocks her away in the Titan Mech. The sorceress overcame P.I.X.A.L. and held the ninja and Wu hostage. Aspheera gloated on her imminent success before the other ninja arrives with the other Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu.
Frozen Aspheera trying to banish Wu
Aspheera was shocked that they found the other scroll and duels the empowered Lloyd before knocking the scroll away from him. Every time a ninja was defeated, another ninja grabs the Scroll and fights her. She defeated them all until Zane stepped in and froze her, causing her to lose her stolen powers. Not one to be denied vengeance, Aspheera took her free arm with her staff to aim one last shot at Wu. Zane intercepts it and is seemingly destroyed. After that, she finally dropped the staff on the ground.
Aspheera with Wu in her cell
Following the battle, Aspheera was arrested and held in cell one at Kryptarium Prison. She is visited by Wu, remarking on how he visited her like last time. An infuriated Wu criticized her, as her vendetta cost him one of his pupils and asks if she is satisfied with her deed. The confused Aspheera reveals that she never wanted to destroy Wu but trap him as he did her. Aspheera states Zane was not destroyed but banished to the Never-Realm, a place that Wu would never be able to save him from. The old master is horrified to learn this and runs out as she taunts him while laughing.
Prior to Crystalized[]
During her time in prison, Aspheera began to think of various of contests she could defeat Wu in after failing to banish him to the Never-Realm, and trained herself on how to do so. At the same time, she also learned to make origami snakes from paper.[4]
Crystalized[]
A Mayor Problem[]
Aspheera escaping from her cell
After Mayor Ulysses Trustable refused the ninja's request to release Aspheera from Kryptarium Prison, the ninja decided to take matters into their own hands and break her out themselves. As they broke into Kryptarium Prison's most secured wing, where cell one was located, Aspheera was making an origami snake from paper. When she noticed the ninja in black suits, she asked who they were, and when Kai took off his mask, she was confused because she didn't recognize him. However, as soon as he introduced himself to her, she realized that they were the ninja. Lloyd then offered Aspheera the opportunity to set her free if she would help them turn Nya back into a human. Although the sorceress disagreed with the proposal at first, she eventually accepted it, and the ninja carved a hole in the cell's glass to allow her to get out. They then climbed onto the thick rod that held the cell in the air and climbed it up. Unfortunately, Aspheera unknowingly set off the alarm when her tail hit Zane, causing him to drop his laser cutter, which made the device go off, slicing through the rod and causing cell one to fall to the very bottom of the containment chamber. As soon as they climbed out of the ceiling, prison guards were waiting for them, but the ninja and Aspheera managed to go around them and ran down the hall, where they escaped from Kryptarium Prison.
Public Enemies 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5![]
With the ninja and the frozen Nya
When the ninja returned to the monastery with Aspheera, she opened the door just to face Wu's suspicious face. Aspheera said she had always dreamed of changing their roles, which Wu replied that if it was up to him, he would never free her from Kryptarium Prison. But then he said that their destinies were now linked and that he would not stand in her way to freedom if she turned Nya back.
The ninja then took Aspheera to the hangar bay, where they showed her the frozen Nya. Wu explained to Aspheera that she could turn her back by draining her powers away, as she had done with Kai. However, Aspheera explained to them that she needed her staff for it, so the ninja had to leave to get it.
A Painful Promise[]
Trying to touch the Weapons of Spinjitzu
After the ninja had left the hangar bay, Aspheera was sitting and drinking tea. After drinking all the tea, she stood up and left to explore the hangar. She managed to find a hiding place for the Golden Weapons, but when she wanted to touch them, Wu stopped her. Aspheera asked him if it wasn't dangerous to keep them so close to each other, but the old Master replied they were powerless, so there should be no problem. Aspheera then decided to leave because the ninja had not brought her staff, but Wu asked her what might keep her there. Aspheera thought about it for a moment, and then said she wanted to take part in a series of contests to test their strength and cunning. Although Wu disagreed at first, but when Aspheera turned to leave, he was forced to agree.
Aspheera defeating Wu
The first contest was lifting weights in the courtyard, in which Aspheera won. Wu argued that he was thousands of years old, but the sorceress beat him, saying that she was also thousands of years old.
Another contest was an arm wrestling match in the relaxation room, in which Aspheera also won and called Wu a Wu-ser. The Master asked her if they were done, but Aspheera told him that not even close.
The next contest was playing pool. When Aspheera won using Wu's staff, she threw it back into the hands of the "Treacherous Deceiver."
Aspheera with her pancakes
The penultimate contest was a staring contest. Aspheera, however, won again when she startled Wu with her tongue in the eye and he blinked.
The last contest was a pancake flipping competition, which Aspheera also won.
When the ninja returned, Lloyd handed over the staff to Aspheera, who, however, immediately began to shoot energy blasts on the ninja, shouting "Revenge!"
Aspheera draining Nya's powers
However, when police helicopters arrived at the monastery, Aspheera asked Wu if he had betrayed her again and called the police, but Wu swore it wasn't him. The ninja then explained that the police came because of them, as Kai accidentally revealed their real names during the staff theft. Aspheera was then forced to use the staff to take away Nya's powers, so that Lloyd would then show her the secret way to freedom. She did it and it finally worked. Lloyd immediately ran to the lying Aspheera and helped her to stand up. He then led her to a secret tunnel and explained how she could escape. Aspheera was shocked for a moment that the Green Ninja hadn't betrayed her and kept his word, and then she turned and slithered away.
Aspheera with the Crystal Spider in her pyramid
Aspheera then returned to her old pyramid and made a number of origami snakes from paper, which she placed on the ground in front of her, sat on the throne, and pretended to be their queen. At that time, however, someone threw a new staff into her tomb, and a Crystal Spider came in front of her, who played her the message from the Kabuki Mask about whether she wanted to join the Council of the Crystal King and achieve the revenge she wanted. Aspheera informed him that she could not refuse such an offer and began to shout "Revenge!"
She then left the pyramid with the spiders and went to the Crystal Temple, where she waited for the day of the meeting of the council.
The Council of the Crystal King[]
Aspheera with the other villains
When Lloyd, disguised as the Mechanic, entered the meeting room, Aspheera was sitting at the table with the other villains, Pythor, Vangelis, and Mister F. After Lloyd mentioned that the ninja always ruined his plans, Aspheera agreed by saying the ninja always ruin everything and began to shout that she longed for revenge. Pythor repeated these words ironically to her, and when she asked him what he said, he denied that he would say anything and asked her the same question also ironically.
Trying to stop Lloyd
As the Kabuki Mask entered the room, Aspheera asked him what the Crystal King's plan was. The Kabuki Mask replied that the King would reveal his plan soon and then he told the villains that there was an impostor among them. All the villains, including Aspheera, were shocked and tried to find out who it was. Aspheera first accused Vangelis because he was the only one wearing a mask, but then the Kabuki Mask revealed that it was Lloyd disguised as the Mechanic. As Lloyd tried to escape, Aspheera shoot an energy blast at him from the staff, but did not hit him. Lloyd then ran on, but he was eventually stopped by Mister F and then the Kabuki Mask revealed his secret identity: a resurrected Harumi.
The Fall of the Monastery[]
Aspheera using Crystal Spiders to destroy the Monastery of Spinjitzu
Aspheera leads the council to the monastery into the secret elevator she first escaped through. As she expresses her desire for revenge, Vangelis reminds her they're after the Golden Weapons this time. They fight efficiently against Wu, Nya, P.I.X.A.L., and Skylor. When it felt like a losing battle because of a MiniPix swarm, Aspheera revealed some crystal spiders behind the elevator, which defeats them all, with the Serpentine sorceress telling Nya that Harumi sends her regards. After defeating them all, Aspheera went to the Golden Weapons and claimed the Sword of Fire for herself before they all leave to set the crystal spiders for self-destruct.
Darkness Within[]
Harumi has Aspheera recite a spell to bring forth the Crystal King and turn the Golden Weapons into Weapons of Destruction, unaware that Pythor was mocking her behind her back.
The Coming of the King[]
Aspheera receiving the Sword of Destruction
The Overlord gives Aspheera the ability to use Darkness, turning her scales dark gray and allowing her to wield the Sword of Destruction. She then insulted Vangelis for his praises, only to be insulted herself by the Mechanic before Lloyd managed to free himself and attempted to flee. Managing to catch up to him, Aspheera tried to attack Lloyd, only for him to kick her further down the hallway. Managing to catch up with him again, she, along with the other council members, threw their weapons at Lloyd, who managed to dodge them as they collide, giving off a shockwave to knock them all down. Harumi then deliberately gives Aspheera and the others a wrong direction so that she could confront Lloyd herself. Upon reaching the mouth of the temple, Aspheera watched as Lloyd grabbed Harumi and jump off into Primeval's Eye. She then ordered the others to jump after them, but they refuse with the Mechanic retorting that she'd do it.
Return to Primeval's Eye[]
Aspheera facing against Wu
Riding Dragonides, Aspheera and the council try to search for Lloyd and Harumi before Aspheera spotted them, but was believed to have been bluffing. Aspheera then came across Wu and Nya on the Destiny's Bounty before being blasted away by Zane's jet.
An Issue of Trust[]
Aspheera, along with the other council members, was reprimanded by the Overlord for their failure to find the Ninja. The Overlord furiously attempts to kill the council members as punishment for their failure, and Aspheera is utterly shocked by this with the rest of the members. However, this was avoided when Harumi and Mister F arrive to inform him that the ninja are currently hiding at the newspaper warehouse. Arriving there, Aspheera watched Jay's attempted negotiation before attacking.
Dragon Form[]
Aspheera scared of the Dragon Form
In the heat of the battle, Kai, Jay, Cole and Zane achieve Dragon Form, shocking Aspheera, who later fights Kai with Pythor's help before the latter is taken down by Jay while Kai managed to reclaim the Sword of Fire from her. As the resistance was celebrating, Aspheera warns them the Overlord plans to corrupt the Elements of Creation, and she'd have her revenge, only to be frozen solid by Zane a second time.
After the battle, Aspheera was arrested and sent to Kryptarium Prison once again.[5]

Shintaro[]
Nya mentioned Aspheera as a reason the ninja had been gone for several weeks while cleaning the Monastery of Spinjitzu with Jay. Later, Wu mentioned Aspheera when he was listing situations where the ninja did not need his help anymore.
Appearance
Appearance[]
Aspheera is a female Serpentine who has yellow eyes with red-orange irises and looks like an Indian cobra, similar to King Mambo. Her body is covered in dark teal scales and has a tail instead of legs. Her arms are the same teal color with silver gloved hands. She wears a unique tan and gold robe under a golden cuirass with Indian Cobra head-shaped shoulder pads. When empowered with Kai's Elemental powers, she had golden scales, a flaming cobra hood, and a fiery golden tail. When empowered by the Overlord, her hood turns into pink-purple crystals, her eyes became pink with light gray irises, and her scales changed to dark gray. She also wears the same Crystal Council armor, consisting of purple sleeves, metallic gray torso with purple and glowing pink accents, and the Overlord's symbol in the center.
When she was young, she had a regal gold and black bee-like marking on her forehead, her eyes were red with dark red pupils like all the other Hypnobrai, and she did not have her cuirass on.
Personality
Personality[]
Originally, in her youth, Aspheera is charming yet very manipulative, cunning, and arrogant. She is also power-hungry as she overthrew Mambo V for the sake of creating her own empire to conquer all of Ninjago.
Having spent millennia imprisoned, Aspheera desired total revenge on Wu for deceiving her and allowing her to suffer this fate, proving herself to be somewhat hypocritical as she deceived Wu for her own selfish purposes.
Befitting her power, she is hot-headed and very impatient, as shown when she knocked down some artifacts while looking for the Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu and when she snaped at Char for asking her who the "Treacherous Deceiver" is.
Unlike most villains, she didn't seek to rule Ninjago, as she did before when she disregarded conquering what she thought were weak.
After her defeat, she was composed at meeting Wu again and only remarked on the circumstances. She showed herself willing to settle for defeat since she was aware that her actions distressed Wu at not getting Zane back from the Never-Realm, where she intended to trap Wu.
She seems to have become somewhat mentally unstable during her imprisonment in Kryptarium Prison, and her desire for revenge has multiplied, forcing her to repeat the word whenever revenge is mentioned, laughing devilishly as she does so.
Aspheera also felt betrayed by everyone around her, so she was very surprised and shocked when Lloyd kept his promise to show her the way out of the hangar bay if she drained Nya's powers.
Even after the ninja broke her out from prison and allowed her to be free after helping return Nya back to her human form, Aspheera was still willing to betray them and join the Council of the Crystal King, which once again shows her insane desire for revenge against all her enemies. However, she does fear the Overlord's rage when the latter threatened to kill her and the other council members for their failure to capture the Ninja.

She has a sly laugh you won't forget in a hurry. The evil serpentine sorceress Aspheera caused trouble in Season 11 and is now back as the Crystal King's general.[8]
LEGO.com[]
The Serpentine sorceress is a former leader of the Pyro Vipers, a member of the Hypnobrai tribe and has fought many battles against the ninja. She once learned Spinjitzu from a young Master Wu but has only used these powers for evil and has at times stolen both Kai and Zane's elemental powers. Now the ninja have asked her for help, how long can this unlikely truce hold? Aspheera has served time being locked up in Kryptarium Prison.[9]

Etymology
Etymology[]
Her name may come from the Latin root aspis, which means "viper." It also means "shield," which is not related to her character though. It could also be based on the word "asphalt," which is somewhat related to her fire power in Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu.
Behind the scenes
Behind the scenes[]
- Her name during development was "Venom Le Drip."[10]
- In Crystalized, Aspheera's voice actor, Pauline Newstone, has been replaced by Kathleen Barr due to Newstone's retirement.[11]
- This makes Aspheera the only main villain to have their voice actor replaced.
- Pauline Newstone, her voice actress in Season 11, already voiced a golden-colored talking snake before (Heka, Scarab's staff and familiar) in the 1997 cartoon, Mummies Alive!
- Aspheera was originally intended to appear in "Gold Rush" as one of the villains alongside Acidicus, Fire Fang, and the unnamed Serpentine warriors, but in the final version, the Serpentine as the villainous faction are replaced by the Shadow Banshees.[12]
Trivia
Trivia[]
- Aspheera is similar to Magica De Spell from the DuckTales reboot:
- Both are evil non-human witches whose magic power depends on a certain object (Aspheera's staff and Sumerian Talisman).
- Both were once defeated and imprisoned by the main characters' mentor (Wu and Scrooge McDuck), swearing revenge on them.
- Both also fought for some major villain (Crystal King and Bradford Buzzard) under certain circumstances.
- Aspheera is the fifth villain who knows Spinjitzu, the others being Garmadon, the Overlord, Techno Wu, Doubloon, and Nineko.
- Aspheera is the first Serpentine who has been seen using Spinjitzu.
- Aspheera is one of seven known female Serpentine, the other five being Selma, Rivett, Machia, Mikloshe, SsssSsss Underwood, and Hantro.
- She is the only known female Serpentine who has a tail (Machia is shown having one only in the LEGO sets).
- She and Mikloshe are the only known female Hypnobrai to have bluish scales instead of pink scales.
- She is the third main female antagonist in the original series after the Preeminent and Harumi.
- However, she is the first one who is the only major antagonist of her season/chapter, as for most of Season 5, Morro is considered the main villain and Harumi is replaced by Garmadon in the last episodes of Season 8.
- She is also the last female character in the original series to be the main antagonist of her debut season.
- She is the third villain to make Kai powerless, the first being Chen and the second being Morro.
- Apart from Chronosteel, her magic is the only way to take Elemental Powers. However, unlike Chronosteel, this does not seem to be permanent.
- She is the second Serpentine main antagonist, the first being Pythor.
- She is the third villain introduced to have a vendetta against both Wu and his brother, the first being the Time Twins. However, chronologically, she is the first, as she swore revenge thousands of years prior to Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu, while the Time Twins swore revenge 40 years prior to The Hands of Time.
- This makes her the fifth villain to have a vendetta against Wu, the others being Garmadon, Morro, and the Time Twins.
- She is one of the seventeen Serpentine whose name is mentioned in the franchise, the others being Skales, Pythor, Acidicus, Skales Jr., Arcturus, Clancee, Blunck, Raggmunk, Machia, Char, Mambo V, Mikloshe, Spitz, SsssSsss Underwood, Frak, and Delphee.
- She is the third main antagonist to announce the title card at the beginning of an episode, with her announcing "Vengeance is Mine!".
- Chen is the first as he announced the Chen's Chair shorts and Garmadon is the second as he announced "Big Trouble, Little Ninjago" and every episode of Hunted.
- She is the first villain with no intention of killing the ninja, including Wu. She only wanted her revenge on Wu by attempting to trap him in the Never-Realm, but instead banished Zane by accident. This was also shown after the ninja accidentally released her and she drained Kai's power but spared them, albeit her claim that it was because Kai "shared" the gift of Fire with her (although she temporarily stole all of his power for several episodes).
- It is unknown why she had shoulder armor and yellow glowing eyes while trapped in the pyramid, as she had neither traits before she was imprisoned.
- She and Vex are responsible for Zane becoming the Ice Emperor and wreaking havoc upon the Never-Realm, with her banishing Zane to the Never-Realm and Vex erasing his memories.
- She is the second main villain who does not physically appear in a season finale, the first being Iron Baron.
- She also does not make a physical appearance in "A Cold Goodbye," which is the final episode of the Fire Chapter.
- Aspheera shares similarities with Morro. Both were in close relations with Master Wu and somehow "betrayed" by him, which resulted in them being high-ranked leaders of their teams.
- The only difference between them is that Morro redeemed himself while Aspheera still maintains her evil ways, as shown when she taunts Wu when revealing Zane was sent to the Never-Realm.
- Her eyes are the same type as the Stone Guardians.
- According to Tommy Andreasen, Aspheera and Pythor would likely not get along well, as there would be "too much ego on each side."[13]
- This was confirmed in subsequent episodes of Crystalized following the twelfth episode, "The Council of the Crystal King."
- She is similar to Nineko:
- Both are non-human sorceresses who wanted to take revenge on their teacher in some way
- Both also abused Wu and Garmadon by helping them in some way and demanding a favor in return.
- The difference, however, is that while Aspheera required the brothers to teach her some martial art, Nineko did the opposite.
- Despite having a snake tail in the show, she has a ghost tail in the sets.
- When asked how Aspheera was doing after the Merge, Chris "Doc" Wyatt replied, "She's bitter and angry. So normal."[14]

Relationships
These are the relationships of the leader of the Pyro Vipers, Aspheera.
Allies
Allies[]
Char[]
Aspheera and Char
Char is Aspheera's servant and loyal towards her. But due to his annoyance, Aspheera has to tell him to be silent.
In "Powerless," Aspheera doesn't seem to care about Char as she only came to the Ninjago Museum of History to find one of the Scrolls of Forbidden Spinjitzu and not him, and when he tried to pick up the Forbidden Scroll, she pushed him out of the way, telling him that the scroll is hers.
Char's loyalty to her wasn't high either, as he had no qualms in abandoning her side when the ninja overwhelmed her and the other serpents.
Pythor[]
- “The time for revenge is at hand. Revenge. Revenge!”
- “Revenge, revenge.”
- “What?”
- “What what?”
- “What did you say?”
- “I don't know. What did I say?”
— Aspheera and Pythor, "The Council of the Crystal King"
Aspheera talking with Pythor
Pythor is a new ally of Aspheera during the events of Crystalized, although the two didn't get along well.
In "The Council of the Crystal King," as Aspheera announces the the time for revenge is near, Pythor mocks her by parroting her line "Revenge, revenge." When Aspheera asks the Anacondrai what he just said, Pythor just plays it dumb, further insulting her.
In "The Fall of the Monastery," Aspheera then started shouting for revenge, to which Pythor responded by shaking his head in annoyance and groaning.
In "Darkness Within," while Aspheera was making the ritual, Pythor can be seen mimicking her.
Vangelis[]
- “Very impressive.”
- “Praise from the fallen king. Worthless! But the admiration of Aspheera, Empress of the Serpentine. That is a praise.”
- “You dare!”
— Vangelis and Aspheera, "The Coming of the King"
Aspheera accusing Vangelis
In "The Council of the Crystal King," the Kabuki Mask replied that the Crystal King would reveal his plan soon and then he told the villains that there was an impostor among them. All the villains, including Aspheera, were shocked and tried to find out who it was. Aspheera first accused Vangelis since he was the only one wearing a mask.
In "The Fall of the Monastery," Aspheera expresses her desire for revenge, but Vangelis reminds her that they're after the Golden Weapons.
Vangelis and Aspheera
In "The Coming of the King," shortly after the Overlord raised the Crystal Temple into the sky, Vangelis expressed his praise, but Aspheera immediately stopped him, saying that praise from a fallen king is nothing, but praise from a Serpentine Empress, that it already means something. Vangelis was angered by this insult, but before he could do anything, the Crystal King stopped the argument.
In "Return to Primeval's Eye," when the Crystal Council was sent to search for Lloyd and Harumi, Aspheera informed Vangelis that she saw something green, which annoyed Vangelis since they were in the jungle.
Harumi (formerly)[]
Enemies
Enemies[]
Wu (former friend)[]
Aspheera and Wu as children
When Aspheera and Wu first met, the latter and Garmadon were put in cells for trespassing Serpentine Valley. Aspheera said that she'll free them but only if they teach her Spinjitzu, the brothers promised, but Wu was the only one who kept it. After Wu taught her Spinjitzu, she secretly overthrew King Mambo V and became queen of the Pyro Vipers. Later with the help of Garmadon, Wu stopped Aspheera with the Scrolls of Forbidden Spinjitzu and defeated her. After Mambo V was put back in the throne, he sentenced Aspheera to be trapped in a magical tomb until her sins were forgotten. When Aspheera was put in a cell, she begged Wu to free her as she did the same for him and his brother. Wu ignored her and told her that she would've brought war and suffering to all Ninjago, and he left. Once Wu left, she was filled with anger and dubbed Wu as the "Treacherous Deceiver," and swore that she'll have her revenge on him.
When they finally met again, she voiced on how she always dreamed of confronting him and was nearly successful but was defeated by Zane, but not before she mistakenly banished him when he saved Wu from being hit from the blast. Wu later visited her while she was imprisoned, where she remarked on how it was similar to their last meeting. Wu expressed disgust at her actions but she revealed that she never sought to destroy him but make him feel her pain by banishing him to the Never-Realm as she did Zane. Despite not banishing Wu, Aspheera took pleasure in knowing that she caused him great distress with his pupil's fate and laughed at how he could never get him back.
Aspheera and Wu
Years later, Nya, in her aquatic form told the ninja that she needed to be drained of her powers to return her back to human. When the ninja considered releasing Aspheera, Wu highly opposed of the idea, but eventually realized that there was no way he could reason with the ninja despite them going against the law just to save Nya. As such, when Aspheera is broken out of Kryptarium and appears at the Monastery, she is met with a cold glare from Wu, just before entering. Wu harbored a great amount of distrust towards her, as he stopped Aspheera from examining the Golden Weapons. He was always annoyed by her compromises to remain at the Monastery while the ninja tried to get her staff, but reluctantly agreed to a series of competitions with her.
After Aspheera drained Nya of her powers and returned her back to human, Wu indirectly let her peacefully leave. Some time after, Aspheera returned, with Pythor, Vangelis, and the Mechanic by her side, to confront Wu, Nya, P.I.X.A.L. and Skylor for the Golden Weapons. During the fight, Wu and Aspheera were consistently matched against each other. Despite Wu's best efforts, the heroes ultimately lost to the Crystal Council, and after they stole the Golden Weapons, Aspheera had no qualms in letting Wu and the others be killed in the explosion and destruction of the Monastery. This was later proven when Wu and the ninja with Nya, travelled to Primeval's Eye, Aspheera taunted Wu by asking him that he's still alive, and Wu was shocked to see Aspheera wielding the Sword of Fire, corrupted by crystals.
After the Dragon Formed ninja defeated their respective members of the Crystal Council and reclaimed back their Golden Weapons, Aspheera warned Wu that the Overlord would corrupt him, the ninja, and the elements of Creation, and that she would exact her revenge, just before being frozen by Zane.
Garmadon[]
Aspheera with Garmadon and Wu
At some point in his early life as a child, Garmadon and Wu were rescued by Aspheera after they were locked up for trespassing in Serpentine land. While they promised to help her, Garmadon was said to not want to uphold it and told Wu to not trust Aspheera. Garmadon's warning was accurate, as Aspheera took advantage of Wu teaching her Spinjitzu to overthrow her King and launch an invasion. When informed of this, Garmadon aided his brother in defeating Aspheera who was sealed in a pyramidal tomb for a thousand years.
When the ninja accidentally releases Aspheera, she becomes obsessed with exacting revenge on Wu. While it is unknown how she feels about Garmadon, she may detest him as well since he helped with locking her away. Fittingly, Aspheera was locked away in the cell of Kryptarium Prison that formerly housed Garmadon after his own defeat by the ninja.
Ninja (temporary allies)[]
Aspheera and the ninja
The ninja unintentionally released the fire serpent from her imprisonment. However, she was far from grateful as she was responsible for taking Kai's power and leaving the Fire Ninja powerless. For this, the ninja gained a dislike for her and tried to stop her plans from coming true but she overpowered them with her Spinjitzu. She left them trapped in the pyramid and went onto attack Ninjago City with her Pyro Vipers.
The ninja escaped and learned more of her, specifically her grudge against Wu.
When they finally met again, the ninja interfered in her attack on Wu. Most of the ninja used the second Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu to combat her until Zane froze her to end the threat. However, Aspheera was not defeated so easily and took one last shot at Wu, though Zane took the blow instead and was banished to another realm.
Despite them foiling her plans, Aspheera got the last laugh in the end by banishing Zane, which devastated Wu and Zane's friends because they were likely to never get him back.
Over a year later, the ninja turn to Aspheera for help to bring Nya back from her aquatic state. At first, she is reluctant to help them due to the past, but when the ninja offer to release her from imprisonment, she eventually compiles. But the moment she gets her hands back on her staff again, she instead fires blasts at the ninja, before the New Ninja arrive, so she eventually decides to drain Nya of her powers and return her back to her physical human form again. Lloyd then escorts her to the secret tunnel, keeping his promise, which surprises Aspheera as she calmly exited and returned back to her pyramid.
However, Aspheera became enemies with the ninja again by accepting an invite to the Council of the Crystal King, and engaged in battle with her allies against the ninja, and bring them to the recently-revived Overlord during the final conflict, before being defeated again at the hands of the ninja once more.
Kai[]
- “Remember me?… It’s Kai”
- “Ninja! What do you want?”
— Kai and Aspheera, “A Mayor Problem”
In "Boobytraps and How to Survive Them", Aspheera recognized Kai as a Master of Fire and immediately stole his Elemental Power. Since that moment, Kai has been the ninja to despise the Serpentine sorceress the most, as he felt useless during the ninja's battle's with her.
In "Vengance is Mine!," Kai attempted to use the second Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu to fight her, but Aspheera cunningly glared at her, aware that she stolen his powers, and used Spinjitzu to quickly knock him back. Later on, Kai, like the other ninja, P.I.X.A.L., and Wu, were devastated when a Aspheera seemingly destroyed Zane.
Even after her defeat and incarceration in Kryptarium Prison, Kai still held a massive grudge towards her, as proven during the ninja's quest to find Zane in the Never-Realm.
Much later on, a year after the Great Flood, Nya tells the ninja that she must be drained of her powers to return back to human. This leads the ninja to realize Aspheera might be the best bet. Despite his long grudge towards her, Kai was willing to put aside his personal strife with her in order to have his sister back.
When Kai, Zane and Lloyd meet her in Kryptarium Prison in cell one, Kai was the first to reintroduce himself to her, which once again displays his grudge towards her, before the trio broke her out.
After Aspheera eventually agreed to save Nya, Kai and the other ninja were willing to let her go, but that didn't stop her from joining the Council of the Crystal King to exact her revenge on the ninja.
After the ninja unlock their Dragon Forms, Kai fights Aspheera, and after Jay helps him out after Pythor's interference, Kai is able to reclaim the Sword of Fire back from Aspheera and purify it.
