Runes of Binding

Overview

“The Wolf Clan knew they could not defeat the Lycan King. Instead, they used their cunning and their magic to bind their fallen lord with four runes to lock the Spectral Crown from me.”

The Runes of Binding[1] were Theroxian magical runes attached to the Lycan King. The runes bound the Spectral Crown onto the Lycan King's head. They could only be destroyed using Shatterspin.

Background[]

Following the Exile of the Forbidden Five, a sorcerer known as Zaiden Kane arrived in the Wyldness, intending to conquer the realm. Kane deceived Lord Argus, the interim leader of the Wolf Clan, into striking the Gong of Shattering. Since Argus did not possess an elemental power, he instead unwittingly unleashed a curse upon the Wyldness and was transformed into a giant lycanthrope known as the Lycan King. With the aid of the spectral crown, Kane then seized control over the newly transformed Lycan King and began a campaign of conquest throughout the Wyldness. In an effort to stop Kane, the Wolf Clan used their Theroxian Magic to create the runes of binding, attaching them to the Lycan King to render the spectral crown incorporeal and inaccessible to Kane. The Wolf Clan were then able to finally defeat Kane, but at a great cost, condemning nearly the entirety of the clan to a state of half death.

Shatterspin[]

Many generations later, the Lycan King continued to roam the Wyldness with the runes of binding still bound upon his body. By the time of the Serpentine War, a stranger from another realm arrived in the Wyldness, seeking the power of Shatterspin. After learning the art, the stranger would go on to teach the Children of the Wolf in the art of their ancestors, working alongside them to defeat the Lycan King, under the belief that by destroying the runes and subsequently the spectral crown, the curse placed upon the Wyldness would be lifted.

Eventually, the stranger and the Children of the Wolf encountered and fought the Lycan King at the Hall of Wolves in Lupindor, during which Asa, the youngest of the children, struck the Lycan King with shatterspin and destroyed the runes of binding. While this indeed returned the spectral crown to its corporeal state, the group's guide, Mama Mawa, revealed herself to have actually been Zaiden Kane all this time and that the destruction of the runes were all part of their plan to resume their conquest of the Wyldness.
