Background[]
Zaiden Kane was a sorcerer hailing from an unknown realm who traveled to the Wyldness after hearing of the Forbidden Five in search of a potential sixth member. In a confrontation at the Shadow Dojo, they manipulated Lord Argus into striking the Gong of Shattering with the Mallet of Shattering, fully aware of Argus' inability to perform true Shatterspin. Argus proceeded to strike the gong, resulting in a self-inflicted curse that affected both him and the realm of the Wyldness. Following the leader's cursed transformation, Kane adeptly employed the power of the Spectral Crown to exert control over the newly formed Lycan King. Using him, Kane launched an assault on the wolf warriors, nearly petrifying them all. Unfortunately for Kane, the wolf warriors applied Runes of Binding to the Lycan King during their battle, causing a loss of control over Argus. Ultimately, their ambitions led to their expulsion from the Wyldness. But Kane returned to the realm and hid their identity under the name of Mama Mawa, a kind and wise woman who had a chicken named Buck Buck. With this new identity, "Mama Mawa" met the Children of the Wolf to whom she became a friend and a kind of mentor, while secretly preparing their Machiavellian plan.
The Lycan King[]
Disguised as Mama Mawa, Zaiden Kane helped Buck Buck pluck a carrot from the ground while they remarked on the poor harvest. Zuri called out to them and the latter was delighted to see them. Zuri explained to "Mawa" that Garmadon unsealed the Shadow Dojo and showed the latter the Mallet of Shattering. Garmadon continued, telling them how he found it in the Shadow Dojo and seemed to have learnt a different fighting style after entering it. They recognized the fighting style as the Forbidden Five's arts and went inside their house to discuss further.
Inside, "Mawa" asked Garmadon if he had come from another realm, and he confirmed their suspicions. Zuri asked "Mawa" if they could trust Garmadon with information about the Wyldness' past and "Mawa" said they believed so, adding that it was clear his heart was in turmoil. Garmadon refuted their claim and said he knew who he was and why he was here, but "Mawa" was doubtful.
"Mawa" went on to explain how the Forbidden Five ruled the Wyldness and led the Wolf Clan. They said that Shatterspin was the source of their strength and described how it was performed and used. "Mawa" told Garmadon that with Shatterspin, he could win all wars or even fix the destitution of the Wyldness. Garmadon realized someone had rung the gong before and caused the fall of the Wolf Clan. He asked who did so and "Mawa" explained it was Lord Argus. They went on to tell the story of how he became the Lycan King.
After the story, Garmadon asked if all of the Wolf Clan members were transformed to stone, and "Mawa" said no. They said that the five children, Balun, Warby, Asa, Iriel, and Zuri, were the last children of the wolf. They continued, saying only the children could defeat the Lycan King but they needed to learn the ways of their ancestors. They believed fate brought Garmadon to them and he would help the Wolf Clan rise again. Then, they told Garmadon that he would be the children's teacher.
Masters and Students[]
Still posing as Mama Mawa, Kane took Buck Buck out for a walk, during which they witnessed a fight between Garmadon and the Children of the Wolf, which ended with Garmadon storming off and shouting for the children to leave him alone. Approaching from behind, "Mawa" gently, but sternly, reminded Garmadon of his duty to teach the children the art of their ancestors. When Garmadon refuted "Mawa"'s suggestion that he had only internalized the art of Shatterspin by demonstrating his power to blow up a nearby stone, "Mawa" remarked that mastery could only be truly achieved when one was able to teach the knowledge one possessed; and in Kane's view, Garmadon was exceedingly bad at the teaching part.
"Mawa" then explained to Garmadon that the only way to defeat the Lycan King was by removing the Spectral Crown from his brow. However, to do so, all four runes of binding had to be destroyed first, lest the crown remain incorporeal; the only thing that could destroy the runes, though, was Shatterspin. Kane then remarked that Garmadon was faced now with a choice: return to Ninjago and leave the children to their fate, or become their teacher and offer them the chance of a better future.
Later that night, Kane dressed once more in their sorcerer robes and sought out to find the Lycan King, encountering him in a ruined city. Calling out to the lycanthrope, Kane taunted him by referring to him as "old friend," and emphasizing that they would be reunited very soon. The mere sight of Kane, however, was enough to cause the Lycan King to fly into a rage. Although he attempted to strike Kane with his fist, shattering the pillar they stood on, the cunning sorcerer evaded the attack and flew off towards the moon, laughing maniacally into the night.
Several nights later, Kane, once again in the guise of Mama Mawa, observed the progress of the Children of the Wolf under Garmadon's tutelage. As they sat together following the latest training session, "Mawa" turned to Garmadon and remarked that they were wrong about his inability to teach. "Mawa" then asked Garmadon if he had great teachers whom he had learned from. In response, Garmadon explained that he had many different teachers throughout his life, all with different teaching styles. He then began to explain his own thought processes into teaching the Children of the Wolf.
Destinies[]
In the guise of Mama Mawa, Kane asked Asa and Buck Buck to forage for food in anticipation of a celebratory feast to honor the Children of the Wolf and their successful learning of the art of Shatterspin. "Mawa" then observed as the Children partook in Garmadon's final test in the swaps and commented on the results afterwards, wondering how snatching a scarf could compare to fighting the Lycan King.
After learning from Buck Buck that Asa had been taken by the Lycanthrope, "Mawa" set out themself to investigate and confronted the fleeing Lycan King in the middle of a ruined village. Once again, the Lycan King attempted to crush "Mawa" with a powerful blow, but "Mawa" again dodged it. As the lycanthrope fled to Lupindor with Asa in tow, "Mawa" watched on and mocked the Lycan King's plight, declaring between peals of evil laughter that the Lycan King ought to enjoy what little freedom he had left, for soon they were to be reunited and that the return of Zaiden Kane was nigh.
Homecoming[]
In an effort to save Asa, "Mawa" accompanied Garmadon and the Children of the Wolf to Lupindor, serving as the group's guide. Leading them to the Hall of Wolves. "Mawa" surmised that this must have been where Asa had been taken due to its status as the lair of the Lycan King. Throughout the following fight with the Lycan King, "Mawa" stayed out of the fight and took shelter behind some of the ruined walls, only revealing themself to rescue Asa. Grabbing Asa's arm, "Mawa" and the boy began dashing towards the exit, only to catch the attention of the Lycan King, who turned towards them and prepared one of his petrifying howl attacks. As the two braced for impact, the other four children leapt in front and used their bodies to shield "Mawa" and Asa, becoming petrified in the process. This angered Asa, who then attacked the Lycan King with a mighty blow of Shatterspin, destroying the runes of binding in the process. With the runes destroyed and the Spectral Crown vulnerable, Garmadon struck the crown from the Lycan King's brow, where it then landed at "Mawa"'s feet.
Although Garmadon called out to "Mama Mawa" to destroy the crown, "Mawa" instead released a wicked smile and placed the crown atop their head, revealing their true identity and plans. Now regaining control over the Lycan King, Kane boasted to Garmadon the truth of their deceptions: they wanted Garmadon to destroy the runes of binding, as the runes had in actuality been cast by the Wolf Clan to prevent Kane from possessing the Spectral Crown. Declaring their intention of now conquering the Wyldness, Kane commanded the Lycan King into battle against Garmadon and Asa. As they pursued the two outside the Hall of Wolves and back across Lupindor, Garmadon destroyed one of the bridges as Kane and the Lycan King attempted to cross, plummeting both into the waters below.
Eventually, Kane and the Lycan King made their way to the Shadow Dojo in pursuit of Garmadon and Asa. Upon arriving, however, Kane was mortified to discover that Asa had donned a Wolf Mask and rang the Gong of Shattering with the Mallet of Shattering, expressing concern for his actions until the mask crumbled and was absorbed into Asa's body, the boy's eyes now glowing red with Chaos. Caught off guard by Asa's sudden fervor, Kane attempted to blast the boy with a magic beam projected from their staff but was overwhelmed. In horror, Kane could do nothing more but watch as Asa snatched the Spectral Crown and destroyed it, releasing its energies as a massive explosion. Before the growing light could fully envelop them all, Kane shouted their final words, asking for Garmadon to take care of Buck Buck before being vaporized alongside Asa and the Lycan King and sent to the Departed Realm with them.
