Elemental Powers (also known as Elemental Energy[5][6][7] or Elements) are ancestral powers used by the Elemental Masters in the Merged Realms that have been gifted from the seven Source Dragons and their energy.

The first known users of the Elemental Powers were the Dragons and the Oni. At one point, their powers were inherited by the First Spinjitzu Master, who then received most of the other Elemental Powers directly from the Source Dragons[8] before passing them on throughout the realms. However, in the wake of this,[9] Thunderfang created his own source in an attempt to become a Source Dragon,[10] resulting in the formation of an artificial set of Elemental Powers.[11]

Following the Merge, the amount of elemental energy in the realms increased, resulting in the formation of a new generation of Elemental Masters who were either gifted with an entirely new Elemental Power, or received a pre-existing one.

Following the Battle of the Spectral Lands, the Source Dragons of Strength, Life, and Focus withdrew from the council, which disrupted the balance of Elemental Powers and resurfaced the Elemental Monsters.

Elemental essences

Elemental essences[]

Elemental essences[12][13] are powers that aren't considered "elements" in the conventional sense as unlike Elemental Powers, essences can have several users at the same time. Apparently, these elements are among the most vital in the universe since they are all linked to the Balance and maintain its stability.

Creation[]

Creation is an elemental essence currently used by Master Wu and the dragons others when using the Tornado of Creation and the Mega Weapon, as well as Garmadon after reaching his True Potential. It gives the user the power to create anything. Wu does not use his power much because he knows not to overuse it.[14] It corresponds with the colors yellow, white, and gold, and is a purified form of the four elements of Creation: Earth, Fire, Lightning, and Ice and one of contained powers in the Golden Power.[15]

Darkness[]

Darkness is an elemental essence used by the Overlord. It gives the user the power to control darkness and associates with the colors lavender, pink, and black. Darkness also has a relationship with Destruction,[6] as implied by the Overlord, and Creation.[13] It does not come from the Source Dragons,[1] but rather it is only indirectly linked to them.[16]

Destruction[]

Destruction is an elemental essence currently used by Lord Garmadon and his son Lloyd Garmadon. It gives the user the power to destroy anything. Garmadon was also shown to be able to generate lightning, presumably using Destruction.[17] After being purified of evil, Garmadon ceased to use this power, repressing it by using the Art of the Silent Fist as an alternative in combat.[18] Upon his resurrection, he began using Destruction again. It corresponds with the color dark purple and has a relationship with Darkness[6] (as implied by the Overlord) and Golden Power with it being one of the powers in it.[13][19]

Golden Power[]

Golden Power is an elemental essence formerly used by the First Spinjitzu Master and later his grandson Lloyd. It gives the user the power to shoot golden energy beams, utilize the four elements of Creation, and create almost anything. They can also do golden Spinjitzu and summon the Golden Dragon. It is the power used by the First Spinjitzu Master to create Ninjago and thus can be used to move mountains.[20] It corresponds with the colors gold and golden yellow, is closely related to both Creation[21] and Destruction,[13] with being one of the contained power within it[19] and derived from the combined energies of all the Source Dragons.[22]

Earth[]

Earth is an element formerly used by Lilly and currently by Cole. It gives the user the power to control earth, rocks, minerals, etc. Cole can also do Earth Spinjitzu, Airjitzu, and Spinjitzu Burst. It corresponds with the colors black, brown, green, orange, and briefly pink, and is derived from the Source Dragon of Strength.[23]

Fire[]

Fire is an element formerly used by Ray and currently by Kai. It gives the user the power to control fire, shoot fireballs, and create fire that explodes on impact. Kai can also do Fire Spinjitzu, Airjitzu, and Rising Dragon. It corresponds with the colors red, orange, and occasionally yellow, and is derived from the Source Dragon of Motion.[24]

Ice[]

Ice is an element formerly used by Hibernus and currently by Zane. It allows the user to control ice and freeze things. Zane can also do Ice Spinjitzu, Airjitzu, and Rising Dragon. It corresponds with the colors white and light blue, and is derived from the Source Dragon of Focus.[25]

Lightning[]

Lightning is an element formerly used by Libber and currently by Jay. It allows the user to control electricity. Jay can also do Lightning Spinjitzu and Airjitzu. It corresponds with the colors blue, white, and yellow, and is derived from the Source Dragon of Energy.[26]

Other elements[]

Amber[]

Amber is an artificially created element formerly used by an unnamed woman and currently by Skylor. It allows the user to mimic and combine other Elemental Powers after they come into contact with them, associates with the colors orange and amber, and is derived from the Source Dragon of Balance.[27]

Balance[]

Balance is an element currently used by Kizzy. It allows the user to completely hold their balance and overcome physics with perfect equilibrium. It is associated with the color lemon and derived from the Source Dragon of Balance.[28]

Brute Force[]

Brute Force is an element used by Nokt. It allows the user to overwhelm opponents through sheer power, associates with the colors light red and magenta, and is derived from Thunderfang.[29][30]

Decay[]

Decay is an element used by Kur. It allows the user to manipulate and cause decomposition, associates with the colors red, orange, and rust, and is derived from Thunderfang.[29][30]

Fear[]

Fear is an element used by Rox. It allows the user to manipulate the emotional state of fear in other people, associates with the color dark red, and is derived from Thunderfang.[29][30]

Figment[]

Figment is an element currently used by Algu. It allows the user to create copies of themselves to help them in battles, as well as clone any items or weapons they hold. The clones are also able to use other elemental powers if the user has them. It associates with the color white/ivory and is derived from the Source Dragon of Focus.[31]

Form[]

Form is an element formerly used by Leo and currently by Chamille. It allows the user to shape-shift into other people by changing their appearance and associates with various colors, mostly purple/violet and yellow. It is derived from the Source Dragon of Flow.[32]

Fusion[]

Fusion is an element used by Geo. It allows the user to fuse objects together or separate them, creating an unbreakable bond between any item, and is associated with multiple colors, namely white, lavender/purple, green, yellow, and light blue. It is derived from the Source Dragon of Strength.[33]

Gravity[]

Gravity is an element formerly used by Levi and currently by Gravis. It allows the user to manipulate gravity, associates with the colors red/maroon, black, and purple/violet, and is derived from the Source Dragon of Strength.[34]

Heat[]

Heat is an element currently used by Wyldfyre. It allows the user to manipulate heat and associates with the colors orange, fire engine red, and blue. It is similar to Fire and derived from the Source Dragon of Energy.[35]

Kismet[]

Kismet is an element once used by an unnamed frog.[36] The exact powers of this element are unknown, though they could be related to Fate or Destiny manipulation.

Life[]

Life is an element currently used by Lloyd and one of his metaphysical representations, Enemy Lloyd. It grants the user the power to control life energy as it is a combination of the elements of Creation, and the ability to connect with others and even enhance their powers. It also allows them to shoot life energy blasts, beams, and create energy shields. Lloyd can also use Life Spinjitzu, Airjitzu, and Rising Dragon. It corresponds with the color green and is derived from the Source Dragon of Life.[37]

Light[]

Light is an element currently used by Mr. Pale. It allows the user to manipulate and become invisible through light, associates with the color white or can be colorless/transparent, and is derived from the Source Dragon of Energy.[38]

Metal[]

Metal is an element currently used by Karlof. It allows the user to turn their body completely into metal, giving them enhanced strength and durability. It associates with the color silver/gray and is derived from the Source Dragon of Strength.[39]

Mind[]

Mind is an element currently used by Neuro. It allows the user to read other people's minds, predict what they are planning, and send mental messages. It associates with the colors gray, white, and navy blue, and is derived from the Source Dragon of Focus.[40]

Misfortune[]

Misfortune is an element used by Zarkt. It allows the user to manipulate and cause bad luck, associates with the colors fluorescent red and crimson, and is derived from Thunderfang.[29][30]

Nature[]

Nature is an element formerly used by Brook and currently by Bolobo. It allows the user to create plants to trap enemies and connect with nature. Bolobo wields the staff known as the Staff of Nature, which can manipulate plants. It associates with the colors forest green and brown and is derived from the Source Dragon of Life.[41]

Plants[]

Plants is an element currently used by Zant-Tanz. It allows the user to grow and control plant life and is associated with the colors bright green and pink. It is similar to Nature and derived from the Source Dragon of Life.[42]

Poison[]

Poison is an element currently used by Tox. It allows the user to manipulate poison and produce toxic gases, associates with the colors lime and teal, and is derived from the Source Dragon of Life.[43]

Propulsion[]

Propulsion is an element used by Arccrack. It allows the user to curl up into a ball to perform a rolling motion attack and is associated with the colors light red and yellow. It is derived from the Source Dragon of Energy.[44]

Quake[]

Quake is an element currently used by Frak. It allows the user to create and manipulate vibrations and is mainly associated with the colors light orange and yellow. It is similar to Earth and derived from the Source Dragon of Motion.[45]

Reflex[]

Reflex is an element currently used by Zur. It gives the user superhuman reflexes and agility and associates with the colors red and scarlet. It is similar to Speed and derived from the Source Dragon of Focus.[46]

Shadow[]

Shadow is an element formerly used by Shade and currently by Obscuria. It allows the user to travel in shadows, associates with the color black, and is derived from the Source Dragon of Balance.[47]

Shockwave[]

Shockwave is an element formerly used by Levo and currently by Zeatrix. It allows the user to create and control shockwaves and associates with the colors indigo and lavender. It is derived from the Source Dragon of Motion.[48]

Size[]

Size is an element currently used by Gorge. It allows the user to shrink or enlarge their body and associates with the color yellow. It is derived from the Source Dragon of Life.[49]

Smoke[]

Smoke is an element formerly used by Ash and currently by Cinder. It allows the user to manipulate and turn into smoke, as well as use it for teleportation, and associates with the colors gray and light orange. It is derived from the Source Dragon of Flow.[50]

Sound[]

Sound is an element formerly used by Jacob Pevsner and currently by Teelk. It allows the user to control sound and associates with the color teal. It is derived from the Source Dragon of Motion.[51]

Speed[]

Speed is an element currently used by Griffin Turner. It gives the user super speed, agility, and reflexes. It associates with the colors white and red/crimson and is derived from the Source Dragon of Motion.[52]

Surface Tension[]

Surface Tension is an element used by Mord. It allows the user to manipulate surface tension, such as turning water into bubbles. It associates with the colors turquoise and teal and is derived from the Source Dragon of Strength.[53]

Swarm[]

Swarm is an element used by Drix. It allows the user to manipulate and turn into a swarm of insects and associates with the colors red/vermilion and black. It is similar to Smoke and Vermillion reconstruction and derived from Thunderfang.[29][30]

Technology[]

Technology is an element used by Sora. It allows the user to manipulate technology and machinery, associates with the colors purple and pink, and is derived from the Source Dragon of Focus.[54]

Time[]

Time is an element formerly used by the Time Twins: Acronix and Krux. It is branched off into four different abilities: Pause, which allows the user to temporarily pause time around them or just pause select people, Slow-Mo, which creates a sphere of energy around a person or object that causes them to be slowed down, Forward, which can be used to speed oneself up, and Reverse, which can be used to reverse time to a certain moment or just a person/object. When Acronix and Krux attempted to use their powers on Wu and Garmadon, the four abilities of Time were absorbed into the Time Blades. It associates with the colors orange/amber (Reverse), blue (Slow-Mo), red (Pause), and green (Forward), and is derived from the Source Dragon of Flow.[55]

Water[]

Water is an element formerly used by Maya and currently by Wojira, Nyad, and Nya. It allows the user to manipulate water. Nya can also do Water Spinjitzu, Airjitzu, and Rising Dragon. It has a relationship with Ice, corresponds with the colors cyan/light blue and teal, and is derived from the Source Dragon of Flow.[56]

Wind[]

Wind is an element formerly used by Morro and currently by Wojira and Euphrasia. It allows the user to manipulate wind/air and spin around like a tornado, as well as use it to fly. It associates with the colors jade/green and white and is derived from the Source Dragon of Flow.[57]

Other elements[]

Portals (canonicity unknown)[]

Portals is an element used by the Elemental Master of Portals. It allows the user to create and manipulate portals and associates with the colors yellow/saffron and orange.

Asa's Elemental Power[]

Ellie's Elemental Power[]

An element used by Ellie. It is associated with the color white/platinum.

Henjamin's Elemental Power[]

An element used by Henjamin.

Imagination (non-canon)[]

Imagination is an element used by Wu and Neido in the LEGO Universe video game. It allows the user to imagine or create whatever they want and associates with the colors gray and azure.

General Abilities

General Abilities[]

  • Elementokinesis - Elemental Masters and other users of elemental powers can manipulate their respective elements.
    • True Potential - If an Elemental Master overcomes emotional obstacles that are holding them back, they would gain a considerable power boost and new abilities derived from the element while being able to manipulate their elemental powers freely.
    • Elemental shields - Elemental Masters can surround themselves in a bubble of elemental energy that allows them to survive even orbital impacts. However, most Elemental Masters never use it due to the specific situation it requires.[58]
    • Elemental Dragons - Elemental Masters can manifest their very own Elemental Dragon by overcoming their fear. But if said master shows fear, the dragon will vanish.
    • Elemental creations - Elemental Masters can also create elemental creations, which are weapons or beings made out of their respective element.
      • Elemental constructs - Some Elemental Masters have been shown to generate material only tangentially related to their elements, as seen when the Elemental Masters instantly regained their regular clothing when their powers were returned to them after the Staff of Elements was destroyed,[60] or when Jay and Lloyd "upgraded" vehicles, as seen with the Jungle Raider and ElectroMech respectively.[61][62]
    • Elemental reactions - Elemental reactions can be created and used to draw in other power users.[63] This is the primary method the Dragon Hunters used to attract dragons.
    • Elemental enhancement - If an element nearby corresponds to an Elemental Master's element, they can use it to their advantage. For example, Nya used the surrounding water of the Endless Sea to drown the Preeminent.[64]
    • Elemental Mimicry - It seems that some elemental powers only allow the user to transform into the element and use it to change their body rather than control or produce it. These elements include Metal, Form, and Shadow. In addition, higher-level abilities of some elements like Water[65] or Wind[66] allow the user to merge themselves with and become the element itself, though the merge becomes permanent if the element is not drained from the master and may cause them to lose their identity and individuality. The true potentials of some elements, like Lightning or Earth, also allow their Masters to change/envelop their body into the element.
    • Elementally-Enhanced Martial Arts - Martial arts like Spinjitzu and others based on or derived from it automatically channel an Elemental Master's power, becoming enhanced by it and gaining its properties, such as when Kai's Spinjitzu burned a hole in a wooden dock, Zane's Spinjitzu froze Ultra Violet, and Garmadon's Spinjitzu destroyed Clouse's animated training dummies. In addition, the Dragon avatar manifested by Rising Dragon can release an Elemental Master’s power from its mouth as a concentrated beam.
  • Magic spells - Elemental Powers can be used for various spells, such as the Anacondrai transformation spell or in conjunction with the healing tea Mystake gives Lloyd.[67]
  • Source Dragon Icon Creation - Elemental Powers can also be used to create Source Dragon Icons, allowing the user to summon Source Dragons.[68]
  • Dimensio-Pyligenesis - When used properly, objects composed of Dragon Ivory like the Crowns of Horns can open a portal to the Nether-Space. But unlike dragon energy, it requires a substantial amount of Elemental Powers.
Weaknesses

Weaknesses[]

Just as Elemental Powers have many uses, many materials, techniques, or weapons can disable, store, or manipulate it. These include:

  • Vengestone - A material that stops Elemental Powers from working, usually forged as chains, cuffs, or cages to keep Elemental Masters from using their powers to escape captivity. Interestingly, Vengestone does not keep dragons from using their powers. Its only effect on the dragons seems to be that it is strong enough to keep them from escaping, or it may weaken their powers.
  • Chronosteel - A powerful metal that can absorb Elemental Powers. Forging it is physically and mentally draining. With it, Ray and Maya forged the Time Blades as part of Wu and Garmadon's plan to steal Acronix and Krux's powers. When combined with a Blue Crystal, it can absorb more than one Elemental Power.
  • Dragon Ivory - Forged from the bones and horns of dragons, Dragon Ivory can attract and absorb Elemental Powers.
  • Magic - Aspheera was able to use her knowledge in sorcery and Spinjitzu to steal Kai's elemental fire power and use it for her nefarious purposes,[69] though he was able to regain it on his own with the help of Sorla,[70] meaning this method is not permanent as some of the others are.
  • Corrupted Ice - While corrupted by the Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu, Ice can dampen other Elemental Powers similar to Vengestone and also cancel out the shapeshifting abilities of the Formlings.[71] This just means that other Elemental powers can have power over others within certain parameters when amplified or corrupted by some other type of power source, which in this case was the Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu.
  • Empress Mech - The Empress Mech is immune to elemental powers.
Connections between elements

Connections between elements[]

The four "main" elements have had a significant connection with the elemental essences, specifically Creation and Golden Power.

Lloyd was only able to tap into the Golden Power after the ninja channeled their four elements to him in the Temple of Light, while the ninja gained the Elemental Blades as a replacement for their innate powers[72] (though they still retained their powers to some degree, as the Techno Blades channeled their respective elements).[73]

The ninja were finally able to control the powers within themselves when they returned to the Temple of Light and Lloyd returned their powers,[74] but a power-link remained between Lloyd and the four, meaning they'd lose access to their powers should Lloyd be compromised in some way.[75]

Some time after this, Lloyd became unable to use his powers after his battle with the resurrected Garmadon, yet the ninja kept their powers.[76] This could mean the power-link between them and Lloyd had since disappeared due to the passage of time and Lloyd's growth.[77]

In a broader sense, elements are not always mutually exclusive categories and can overlap in some cases.

Garmadon was shown to control electricity,[17] presumably using Destruction, though it's possible he was in fact channeling the element of Lightning due to the connections between the elemental essences and the four elements of Creation. Moreover, he was able to set bushes on fire,[78] suggesting he was using Fire via Destruction or Creation as well.

Morro was able to create lightning[79] as a combination of his ghost power and Lloyd's power,[80] despite lightning being Jay's element and Lloyd no longer having access to the other ninja's powers at that point.

Nya was able to learn to control ice, albeit with great difficulty, during the ninja's time in the Never-Realm despite it being Zane's element.

According to the Overlord, Garmadon's and Lloyd's power over Destruction were a "gift" from him through the Great Devourer, implying that Darkness has an influence and connection to Destruction. Destruction is overall closely tied to Darkness.[21] Additionally, Creation serves as the foundation that Darkness feeds on to grow.[13]

The Book of Elemental Powers heavily implies that Golden Power is the combination of Creation and Destruction and stated that it can "create and destroy" due to being tied to the First Spinjitzu Master's Oni and Dragon heritage.

Effects on the users' personality

Effects on the users' personality[]

Elemental Powers have shown to be connected to someone's personality. This seems to be an inherited trait as several parents and their children have similar personalities. As it's been pointed out, Kai and his father Ray, who have both wielded Fire, displayed very similar temperaments and personalities such as short temper and impatience. Jay inherited much of his behavior from his birth mother, who is just as chatty and air-headed as him, as they have both wielded Lightning.

According to Dr. Julien, Zane's creator and "father", Zane was behaving differently ever since his predecessor visited and secretly gave the Nindroid the ability to control Ice.

Acronix and Krux's personalities correspond to their powers. Acronix had the power to go into the future and slow down anything he wanted. He has a strong love for technology and the future, not even caring how much time he missed but instead desiring to be further in the future. Krux, on the other hand, can go back in time and pause anything he wants. His personality is the opposite of his twin, as he strongly despises everything that are modern and loves the past, wishing for the world to return to a simpler time.

Tox, the Master of Poison, mellowed out after having her powers temporarily drained. Neuro is typically stoic and strategic. Shade, Mr. Pale, and Ash, the Masters of Shadow, Light, and Smoke respectively, are sneaky people with the former being a loner. Karlof, the Master of Metal, is a skilled metalsmith with a tough demeanor. Griffin, the Master of Speed, is a friendly and cheerful person. Chamille, the Master of Form, is a deceitful and cunning person who is willing to disguise herself to learn other people's secret weaknesses.

Lloyd and Garmadon, when they use Destruction, become more violent and out of control whenever they use their power, though its effects are temporary.

Trivia

  • Currently, 43 Elemental Powers or essences are known, of which 41 are canon for the show. Of these, 39 are Elemental Powers and 4 are Elemental essences.
    • Although only 43 Elemental powers/essences are known, there are other unknown powers.[81]
  • The Elemental Powers of each of the original six ninja take their sources in one of the Source Dragons whose symbol resembles their element. Life comes from Life,[37] Fire comes from Motion,[82] Lightning from Energy,[83] Earth from Strength,[83] Water from Flow,[84] and Ice from Focus.[83]
    • The Source Dragon of Balance is the only one who is not associated with any of the classic ninja's Elemental Powers.
      • Interestingly, that Source Dragon is dead, which means all the living Source Dragons are connected to the original six ninja.
      • Kai, Jay, and Nya, whose elements originate from to the three Source Dragons remaining in the Council of Sources, also ended up in the same group of scattered ninja.
    • Energy is also the source for Heat; Motion is the source for Quake; and Focus is the source for Technology, which are the elemental powers of three of the new ninja.
  • Chris "Doc" Wyatt explains that Elemental Powers are influenced by the size and connectivity of land.[85] This was referenced by Cole when he mentioned that the new elements created after the Merge were formed because the realms came together.[7]
    • Most of the Elemental Masters from the other realms also possess a power that corresponds with the realm or land they got it from.
  • There can be Elemental Masters of Sources (i.e: Elemental Masters of Motion, Strength, Flow, Focus, etc).[86]
  • According to Kevin Burke, Source Dragons cannot choose to give or take Elemental powers from individuals.[87]
  • Chris "Doc" Wyatt explains that if an element is made artificially instead of being naturally derived from a Source Dragon, like Amber, it must be generated using a specific type of source energy. This indicates that the artificially created element will still be derived from the Source Dragon that corresponds to the source the element was formed from.[88]
  • The Elemental Power system is similar to the Elemental Power system in LEGO BIONICLE.
  • It is seemingly implied that all Elemental Powers are necessary to complete the Spell of Transformation, with Chen boasting about having "every elemental power."[60] However, this isn't true. According to Tommy Andreasen on X, only the elements listed in Clouse's Book of Spells were required.[89]
    • It is possible that the spell needs only active/actively used Elemental Powers in Ninjago, because all of the other aforementioned elements were either inactive, unused or inaccessible.
  • Not all elements originally conceived were used in the show, while some were thought or used in other media but were not officially used until later.
    • Magnetism, Crystal, and Sight were concepts for elements but were scrapped early on, with the Master of Crystal being called "Gazor".[90][91]
    • Water was originally going to be used by the non-canon book character, Lar, before officially becoming Nya's element in Possession. It was also planned for a character named "Rayne" for Tournament of Elements.[92] Time was thought of for Season 4 as well but was not used until The Hands of Time.[93]
  • A recurring plot device in Ninjago is one or more ninja losing their powers only to regain them later on.
  • According to Tommy Andreasen, Jay using the power of Wind was merely an early mistake that should be forgotten.[94][95]
    • But given how Ice and Water have a connection, it is possible that this statement isn't valid anymore.
    • In contrast, Wind can be used in combination with Water to form a lightning-like power named Storm.
  • So far, there are 9 Elemental Powers that have more than two colors associated with them: Time, Heat, Lightning, Decay, Earth, Mind, Fire, Gravity, and Fusion.
    • Ice is the only Element of Creation not associated with more than two colors.
  • Time may be the strongest element in all of Ninjago, as it took the whole Elemental Alliance, including Wu and Garmadon to defeat the Time Twins.[5]
  • Tommy Andreasen believes Elemental essences are are the purest remnants of power from the First Spinjitzu Master.[96] However, "The Oni and the Dragon" contradicts this as Creation and Destruction said to predate him and he is said to have not possessed Darkness.
  • According to Tommy Andreasen, "generally there is only one elemental master of each element."[97]
    • This was further confirmed multiple times in episodes of Dragons Rising such as "Mindless Beasts" and "The Spell at the Waterfall."
    • Time is a special case in Elemental Power succession due to being easily divisible, allowing it to be distributed among the Time Twins as different abilities from the same power.[98] In other cases, if twins were born to an Elemental Master, the firstborn would inherit the element.[99]
      • Amber, time travel, and merging with the Endless Sea for millennia while another bloodline passes on Water are other ways for there to be more than one user of an element at the same time.
    • Tommy Andreasen had insinuated that Elemental powers might have users in other realms by stating "the Phoenix from Chima were the masters of fire." [100] Additionally, in "Awakenings," Jay assumed that the Ice Emperor was another Ice elemental. However, Rontu confirmed that there is only one master per element in the the whole Merged Realms (so there are no other Fire elementals in other realms).[101]
  • Brown Power does not count as a Elemental Power, because while Elemental Powers are inherited, this was nothing more than a temporary power gained from tea.
  • The powers specific to species such as Skulkin, Serpentine, and djinns are not elemental powers,[102][103] though the Skulkin were affiliated with the four elements of Creation in promotional media and the Ninjago Spinners game.
    • Serpentine can become hosts of elemental powers, as Frak is the current Master of Quake, a Hypnobrai Master was a previous winner of the Tournament of the Sources, and Aspheera and the Pyro Vipers stole Kai's Fire.
      • When transformed into Anacondrai, Garmadon and Skylor were unable to use their powers because the tiny scales that covered their bodies were holding in the elemental radiation that is the basis for their powers.[104] This could mean that, unlike the other Serpentine species, Anacondrai cannot have elemental powers.
    • A shapeshifted Nadakhan appeared to use Zane's ice power to freeze part of the Mega Monster Amusement Park roller coaster in "Infamous." Tommy Andreasen gave the explanation that it could be related to magic, which if true, would mean djinn magic is able to imitate elemental powers.[105][106]

  • Issue 31 of the Ninjago Magazine showed that while Kai and Nya were in the time vortex, Maya got her power of Water back and used it against the Vermillion. Presumably, this is not how it should work, as Season 11 revealed that there could be two elemental masters of the same element thanks to Time travel,[107] which means that when Nya went to the Time Vortex, she shouldn't have lost her power to her mother.
  • According to LEGO.com, "The elemental fighters actually radiate their powers a little bit all the time. It is when they can control that radiation and focus it that they can shoot flames, make plants grow, or whatever their powers allow them."[108]
  • In "Stiix and Stones," Nya said that powers can skip a generation, but this may be incorrect.[109]
  • In "The Last Voyage," Nya joked that Dareth's Elemental Power was "hot air," meaning "Empty talk that is intended to impress."[110] Dareth misunderstood this to mean he commanded the wind, which was later revealed to be a real element possessed by Morro, while Dareth would temporarily gain the fake Elemental Power of "Brown."
  • It is likely that Darkness is not a remnant of the First Spinjitzu Master's power, since he did not possess it or its aspects, but rather a warped counterpart of his own powers manifested to maintain balance.
    • Tommy Andreasen's personal theory was that the Overlord is the living embodiment of the First Spinjitzu Master's Oni side which the latter literally cast aside. Should this theory ever be canonized in the show, it would imply that the First Spinjitzu Master had Darkness.
    • Unlike the elemental powers in Ninjago coming from the First Spinjitzu Master (including the other essences), Darkness is not derived from the Source Dragons.[111]
  • According to Tommy Andreasen, some Elemental Masters can temporarily infuse their powers into objects.[112] This was seen when Jay infused his nunchucks with Lightning to finish off Samukai in "Day of The Departed" and Cole infused his scythe with Earth to generate an earthquake to knock enemies away in "The Attack." Furthermore, Bolobo almost always channeled his Nature through his driftwood bo staff and the first master of Amber used his power to create Chronosteel.
  • Elemental powers do not grow stronger overtime but rather require training and mastery in order to strengthen.[113]
    • The opposite is also true; if a master does not train/use their Elemental Power for a long time, it may no longer obey them, as seen in "Wasted True Potential."
  • According to Chris "Doc" Wyatt, before the Merge, Elemental Powers could travel across the realms to seek new hosts.[114]
  • Without Chronosteel, elemental powers can never truly be stolen from their elemental master as shown in "Fire Maker", when Kai regained his powers after Aspheera stole it from him.
    • However, since Aspheera was already defeated by Zane, it’s possible that Kai's power simply returned to him gradually.
  • The concept for an unreleased Ninjago set involved a scientist who worked on combining elemental powers in his lab.[116]
  • Some elemental powers seem to change the aesthetic or personality of their elemental masters.
    • Mr. Pale is always invisible unless he is deprived of his element, while Kur's decayed appearance and Tox's poisonous attitude may be a side effect of receiving their elements.
    • This can also apply with the physical appearance of someone as huge as Gorge, who is a bigfigure and not a classic LEGO minifigure and possesses the element of Size, which allows the user to change their size.
    • There are also some other logical connections between elemental masters and their element such as Geo, who is a Geckle and Munce hybrid and possesses the element of Fusion, and Drix, who is an anthropomorphic insect and possesses the element of Swarm.
  • Although Storm and Wave possess slightly different characteristics from other Elemental Powers, The Book of Elemental Powers recognizes them as Elements.
    • However, they were implied not to be elements by Wu, who mentioned that the only elements Wojira had were Water and Wind when he was listing the powers in "A Big Splash." This was also later clarified by Tommy Andreasen.[117]
  • When asked if there are the Elements of Destruction, as opposed to the Elements of Creation, Tommy Andreasen replied that "Destruction is so much simpler than Creation. It can take you a month to create a statue and a second to destroy it."[118]
  • In Ninjago: Dragons Rising, every time an Elemental Master (except Teelk) uses their element, their hands glow with their respective power's color. This was previously only present with Time, Amber in Season 15, Lightning and Earth in Seasons 11-15, Energy occasionally in Season 13-15, Creation in The Virtues of Spinjitzu, and Darkness and occasionally Destruction in Season 15.
  • According to Chris "Doc" Wyatt, each Source has an equivalent of Lloyd's power.[119][120]
  • Though Chris "Doc" Wyatt can see why the term "Elemental Sub-Essence" is a somewhat accurate term to describe Lloyd's power, it will not be used in Dragons Rising.[119]
  • Under some wildly rare cosmic circumstances, a kid born from 2 elemental masters could inherit both powers.[121]
  • According to Chris "Doc" Wyatt, most emotions cannot be Elemental Powers.[122]
    • He later stated Fear is an exception to this.[123]
  • An Elemental Master of gas could exist.[124]
  • According to Chris "Doc" Wyatt, among the elements Size, Figment, and Reflex, two were formed as a result of the Merge, while one already existed beforehand.[125]
  • In Skybound, it was established that Elemental Powers are intrinsically linked to the users' souls, exemplified by Nadakhan's possession of the Djinn Blade. However, the continuity of this connection in Dragons Rising remains uncertain, despite the fact that the color of an Elemental Master's soul correspond to their element.
  • Currently, there are several Elements that are combinations of other base elements. For example, Creation is formed by Fire, Lightning, Earth, and Ice; Imagination, though non-canon, is described by the Double-Bladed Dagger as a mix of Ice and Lightning; Energy consists of the Elements of Creation;[126][127] and Golden Power is a combination of all the existing elements,[8] though it is also implied to be a fusion of Creation and Destruction.[13] In some versions, the Golden Power is implied to be comprised of Fire, Lightning, Earth, and Ice, while in others, it also incorporates Energy, and sometimes even Destruction.
  • At the San Diego Comic Con panel in 2025, it was revealed that Elemental Powers were supposed to be mixed and unexpected following the Merge, which is why powers like Surface Tension exist.[128]
  • Although it is generally stated that an Elemental Master loses their powers upon death, there are notable exceptions. Some masters retained their abilities even after dying and becoming ghosts for reasons that are not fully explained, but can be inferred from certain cases.
    • One example is Morro, who retained his Element even after dying and returning to Ninjago as a ghost. This suggests that an Element can remain bound to its former wielder as long as it has not been transferred to a new one. This theory is reinforced by the fact that when Morro reappears later in Dragons Rising, he no longer possessed his elemental power, which coincides with the existence of a new wielder actively using that Element.
    • On the other hand, there are the Forbidden Five, who died when their souls were consumed by Thunderfang and later manifested by him as ghosts. It is possible that their powers remained intact because Thunderfang is their source and creator, which would have allowed him to preserve their abilities even after death. Alternatively, the same explanation as in Morro’s case may apply: their elements had not yet been inherited by new wielders, allowing them to continue using them even in a spectral state.
  • Several Elemental Masters have their names connected to their respective elements.
