Plot

Plot[]

The Children of the Wolf, Mama Mawa, and Garmadon ride in a boat when they arrive at Lupindor. Garmadon asks if they are certain Asa was taken to that area, and Iriel responds, saying it is likely since it is where the Lycan King's lair is located. Garmadon's eyes glow, and he sees the ghosts of fallen Wolf Clan members standing on the crumbled walls. Elsewhere, Asa wakes up on a throne as rain falls on him. The Lycan King shelters him with a leaf.

A few moments later, the group step foot in front of the Hall of Wolves. Mama Mawa explains how it now serves as the Lycan King's lair. Garmadon reminds them that they are executing a rescue mission and will only sneak in and out to rescue Asa. Warby questions why they are not taking out the Lycan King, and Zuri agrees, saying they have had extensive training. Garmadon cuts her off, saying they will defeat the Lycan King another day. Garmadon watches Asa as the latter uses the leaf like an umbrella. Zuri yells Asa's name, but Garmadon tells them to stay put while he retrieves Asa. Zuri instructs the remaining three children to make a circle around the throne.

Asa walks around and looks at a banner picturing the Gong of Shattering. Garmadon whispers to Asa behind a pile of rocks, but the Lycan King falls and lands in front of the rocks. Garmadon tries to explain himself to the Lycan King, but it attacks him. Garmadon jumps out of the way when Mama Mawa notices the Runes of Binding on the Lycan King and tells Zuri this is their chance to destroy them. Zuri instructs Balun, Warby, and Iriel to get ready and wait for her signal. Iriel questions going against Garmadon's word, but Zuri refuses to back down. The Lycan King prepares to howl when the four attack the runes simultaneously. The four children see the runes reform and fear they timed their attack incorrectly. The Lycan King inhales and howls at Asa. The four other children run to protect him but get turned to stone in the process.

Asa is in tears when his eyes glow blue. Fueled with rage, he attacks the Lycan King and shatters the runes. The Spectral Crown transforms into a solid object, and Garmadon strikes it with the Mallet of Shattering, causing it to fall off the Lycan King's head. The crown lands in front of Mama Mawa, and Garmadon yells at them to destroy the crown. They pick up the crown and stare at it before putting it on their head and revealing their true identity, Zaiden Kane. They ride on top of the Lycan King, and Garmadon is stunned. Zaiden Kane explains that the Wolf Clan bound the Ruins of Binding on the Lycan King to keep the Spectral Crown out of their hands.

The Lycan King howls at Garmadon, but Asa pushes him out of the howl's range. Garmadon thanks him as Asa points to the Shadow Dojo, reminding the former that the Gong of Shattering is located inside it. Garmadon and Asa run across a bridge as Zaiden Kane chases after them. Garmadon uses the Mallet of Shattering on the bridge, resulting in one half of the bridge being destroyed and Zaiden Kane and the Lycan King falling.

Garmadon and Asa arrive at the Shadow Dojo. Garmadon explains how he is going to ring the gong and hopes he will be able to access true Shatterspin. He instructs Asa to find and go through the portal back to Ninjago if the plan fails. Garmadon prepares to ring the gong with the mallet when he hears a voice in his head. A dark figure with red eyes in his head tells him that ringing the Gong of Shattering will set him free. Garmadon shouts in distress when Asa taps his shoulder. Asa holds a Wolf Mask and tells Garmadon he does not have to be afraid. Garmadon is taken aback by Asa's ability to speak, and Asa says he never had much to say and that he preferred listening to the other children's voices. Garmadon asks Asa what he is doing, and Asa responds, saying he is finishing this, and rings the Gong of Shattering. Zaiden Kane arrives riding the Lycan King and sees Asa wearing a wolf Mask. Asa battles Zaiden Kane and takes the Spectral Crown off their head. He destroys the crown with Zaiden Kane and the Lycan King along with it.

Garmadon watches as a piece of Asa's clothing falls into his hands. Warby, Zuri, Balun, and Iriel run toward him and celebrate the Lycan King's defeat and the end of the curse. Zuri asks where Asa is, and Garmadon tearfully tells them he is gone. The sun rises, and the five of them stand in front of the portal back to Ninjago. Zuri comments that Buck Buck wants Garmadon to stay, but he says Ninjago needs him. Garmadon remarks that he came here for power to prevent a war but found something even greater. They have a group hug, and Iriel says they will miss him. Garmadon says he will miss them too.

A Wolf Warrior asks Garmadon to take the Mallet of Shattering back to Ninjago to prevent it from being used for evil again. The warrior says they will rebuild far from the Shadow Dojo and with Zuri as their new leader. Zuri says Asa may not be gone and that they will keep searching for him. She says Asa will always be in our hearts, and Garmadon says Asa will always be in his too. Garmadon says farewell to his students and jumps into the portal. He swims through it to the other side, destroys the portal, and walks into the sunset.

Trivia[]

  • The hat and shoulder armor worn by Garmadon as seen in his future vision greatly resemble his appearance (and included minifigure) on the cover of The Adventures of Garmadon, an issue of a France exclusive Lego Magazine.
    • This minifigure is also included in the Scholastic hardcover collected edition of Shatterspin.
  • After Asa's sacrifice, Garmadon is still in the chamber holding the Gong of Shattering, but after his students arrive, they appear to either be in a different room of the Shadow Dojo or have gone back to Lupindor, as the Gong of Shattering is nowhere to be seen and the environment is different from how the Gong of Shattering's chamber has been depicted throughout the comic series.
