Illumination energy[1] is a primordial energy created from the Great Illumination.

The Phoenix imparted wisdom to the early animal tribes of Chima, but Sir Fangar's ambition to dominate the land led the Hunters to wreak havoc. To counter this threat, the Phoenix Elders used the Fire Wing Harnesses, which held the power to enact the Great Illumination, intended to restore Chima to its original purity.[1] However, Fluminox, the intended Ninth Phoenix, choose to remain with his infant son, Flinx.[2] As a result, the Illumination was imperfect, leading to the creation of the Gorge of Eternal Depth. The Hunters were cast into the gorge, where the Illumination stripped the Fangs of heat, leaving the region desolate and freezing the Hunters within ice. Subsequently, an Illumination energy field enveloped Mount Cavora, elevating it into the sky. Absorbing moisture from the atmosphere, the Illumination energy infused the water within the mountain and turned into Chi, transforming the animals of Chima, with the Lion Tribe, being the first to drink the Chi, ultimately becoming its protectors by gathering it in the Sacred Pool, where it was converted into Chi orbs. Although the Great Illumination succeeded in stopping the Hunters, the Illumination energy within the ice endowed them with ice powers.[1]

- It is linked to Source Energy,[3] although it is unknown whether the two are meant to be the same, as both have been described as fundamental energies connected to the foundation of Chi, with Chris "Doc" Wyatt believing that Chi is more or less derived from Life.[4]
