Wakizashi

Overview

“Behold, my wakizashi is sharp. But lo, my will is sharper!”

A wakizashi is a weapon used in Ninjago. It is a shorter version of the katana, but longer than an average dagger or knife. It is usually wielded alongside a larger sword and is stored in a special sheath at the user's waist.

History

History[]

The Wyldness[]

Before his journey to the Wyldness, Garmadon took a wakizashi to fight off any threats. When the Giant scorpion intercepted him in the desert, Garmadon drew his wakizashi and his Dao to cut off the beast's stinger. After the incident, Garmadon sheathed his weapons and kept it with him for the rest of his journey.

After the arrival of the Lycan King, Garmadon lost his wakizashi after the Children of the Wolf awakened him.[1]

Battle for All Time[]

When Krux and Acronix betrayed the Elemental Alliance, they both wielded wakizashis and katanas to fight Wu and Garmadon at the Monastery of Spinjitzu; but both were eventually lost or broken. [2] Somehow, Acronix managed to get another wakizashi before entering the Temporal vortex.

The Hands of Time[]

Still in possession of his wakizashi, Acronix returned to the Monastery of Spinjitzu and used the weapon to fight Wu. But in the fight, the wakizashi ended up falling from his hands into the void.

Lost in Time[]

Just like 40 years ago in the past, Krux and Acronix once again wielded wakizashis and katanas together for their time travel. After the failure of their plan and the discovery that Kai, Nya, and Wu were in the Iron Doom, the twins used their weapons to fight the heroes.

As the battle continued, now with Wu against the Time Twins, Acronix threw his wakizashi at Wu to try to damage him, but Wu blocked it with his Bo staff.[3]

I am Okino[]

Okino took a wakizashi and a katana to practice his sword skills.

Some time later, the Successful Samurai briefly drew his own wakizashi to use it as an example that it was a sharp weapon, but his will was sharper.

Trivia[]

  • The way the characters use a wakizashi and a larger sword at the same time seems to be based on the Niten Ichi-ryū fighting style.
  • The golden wakizashi that was introduced in Dragons Rising Season 2 sets did not appear in the series, but this piece was used for the model of the Returning Blade.
