Plot
Plot[]
The Best Pets[]
One night, as Arin and Sora set up blankets out on the roof of their home in the Crossroads to sleep under the stars, Arin decided to ask Sora about her past before The Merge. He would become disappointed however when his friend declined to answer and began to feign sleeping to avoid answering the question. In actuality, Sora reflected back to her past in Imperium, specifically the days leading to her creation of the Photacs.
Years before the Merge, Sora, then known as Ana, had been excited to tell everyone at school about her project for the upcoming school fair: a cuddly, hard light pet she dubbed the "Photac." Although Ana's teacher, Mr. Koenig, was at first hesitant, knowing that Empress Beatrix disliked kittens (Ana's proposed Photac animal), he signed off on her project anyway, but not without warning the young girl to be careful. Once Mr. Koenig had left, Ana pulled out her photac cube and created a hard-light kitten, one she dubbed, "Glitch" due to an error in its programming that caused it so always manifest in different, but always incomplete, forms every time. As Ana worked on altering the code, she accidentally caused two of Glitch's legs to morph into wings, the sight briefly amusing the young inventor. Unfortunately, this momentary amusement would give Glitch enough time to fly out a nearby window, forcing Ana to chase after the hard-light creature as it flew all the way back to Ana's house, wreaking havoc and terrifying her parents. After a brief chase, Ana managed to capture the bird-kitten and reset it, transforming it into a hard-light puppy...with rows and rows of shark teeth, much to the horror and chagrin of her parents. Ana, however, was amused by the puppy, naming it "Glitch Number Two" as she took it to her room for further improvements.
Back in the present, Sora leaned up from her blankets as she reflected on this memory with a smile. Although she feared her other, less pleasant experiences from Imperium would soon come to haunt her, she felt that with her now slumbering best friend by her side, she would be ready to face those experiences and any other challenge that might come her way.
Frogs, Bees and Dragon Hunters[]
Before going to his another exploring adventure to the meadow, Riyu promised to the Matriarch that he would be back before dinner. Here, he found his new friends: Bees and Frogs, who were happy to play with him. Suddenly, he ran into a group of Dragon Hunters led by Rapton. While running from them, he asked his amphibian and insect friends to play with them so he could escape. However, they did not like playing with strangers, as they liked playing with Riyu. Surrounded by bees and blocked by jumping frogs, Riyu couldn't see where he was going, and was finally caught by the Hunters. In the end, Riyu declared in his mind that he will make more friends, and together, they will stop Rapton from catching dragons.
The Caregiver Files[]
After escaping from their host planet in the Wyldness, the Caregiver bot begins recording its efforts to raise a human female child as set forth in The Robo-Sense Guide to Baby and Child Care. A summary of the particularly selected log notes are as follows:
Log 368-NW: The Caregiver Bot notes that the child is stubborn, often refusing to eat when given her bottle and crawling away whenever her diaper needs to be changed. The Bot questions if either the guide or the child is flawed, with its opinion leaning towards the child. Nevertheless, the Bot notes that the child sleeps soundly, when she does sleep, and is absolutely perfect.
Log 1095-NW: The toddler has discovered burping, the sound of which amuses her and she now does all day long. In response the Caregiver Bot recommended for the toddler to read the guide's page on toddler etiquette, but she instead ate the page and ran off to climb a nearby tree to obtain a strange melon. Although she would fall off the tree, she would fortunately be saved by a dragon and subsequently declared that these melons would be all she would eat from now on.
Log 2190-NW: The Caregiver Bot notes that the child has a remarkable ability to pick up new languages, expressing a love for fire and for Heatwave, the dragon that had rescued her years ago and has since stayed with them as a paternal figure. Although the Caregiver Bot urges restraint on both subjects, noting that the guidebook warns that both are dangerous, the child brushes off the concerns, naming herself "Wyldfyre" in the process. The Cargiver Bot can do nothing but agree, deciding that the time has come to allow Wyldfyre to explore the world and grow on her own. The guidebook is then discarded, as it is no longer of any use.
Log 4290-NW: Heatwave has been abducted by a group of dragon hunters who expressed an intention to deliver him to Imperium. Wyldfyre declares that she must go after them and save Heatwave, having a final, parting conversation with the Caregiver Bot. As they share a mutual, final hug, the Bot gives Wyldfyre some parting advice based on its years of experience raising her and watching her grow. As Wyldfyre disappears in the distance, the Caregiver Bot decides to wander the lands of the Wyldness on its own, having developed a desire to explore these strange lands.
