Overview

Spinners are mini-sets that real-life players can use while playing Ninjago Spinners. The original spinners from 2011 and 2012 came with three to five LEGO bricks, colors and designs pertaining to the traits of whichever character is included. The spinners themselves are used to represent Spinjitzu used by the ninja. Occasionally, the spinner sets will come with an antagonist such as the Serpentine or Skulkin, or more recently Ras, as well. Some of them also come with collectible trading cards.

Bricks included with spinner sets include two 1x2 bricks, a 2x2 plate, and occasionally two snaps used for attaching weapons directly to the spinner. They can spin longer if a 2x2 plate with a rounded bottom is put on the bottom side of the spinner, which balances the spinner better. spinner crowns can also be put on top of spinners for added decoration.

All spinner sets from 2011-2012 came with some Character Cards and Battle Cards, but these were not included in any later spinners.

Trivia

Trivia[]

  • During toy development, the first designs for the spinners were built by Tommy Andreasen out of BIONICLE elements and had an appearance more akin to a throwing star.[1][2]
  • Samukai on a spinner in a LEGO Club Magazine poster

Although the Skulkin and Serpentine are unable to do Spinjitzu in the series, they have spinners (with the exception of Samukai, the Serpentine generals, Snike, and any Serpentine character introduced after Season 2). However, they are able do Spinjitzu in the graphic novels.
  • One reason Lloyd was aged up in the episode "Child's Play" was because the product designers wanted to have him on a spinner.[3]
    • However, it's unknown why this was the case when Chokun, a character with short legs, had a spinner.
  • The Legacy 2019 Spinners have new Spinjitzu molds that are more accurate to the show and work with the Spinjitzu Slam launchers.
  • There are currently 64 different spinners existing in the Ninjago toyline.
  • Kai is the only ninja to have a spinner for each of the five possible outfits- original, DX, Kendo, ZX, and NRG.
  • In the waves of 2012, the spinners were remodeled, with holes underneath for additional weaponry, the studs on top of the spinners became hollow, and each spinner came with a "crown" for usage. These crowns paved the way for Crown Cards.
  • Spinners for The LEGO Ninjago Movie (Lloyd) and Season 8 (the other five) came out in 2018.
  • Spinners were replaced with a similar new item, the Airjitzu Flyers, in 2015—three years after their sudden discontinuation.
  • Spinners first appeared in the game, Spinjitzu Scavenger Hunt.
  • Destiny of Doom marks the first major appearance of a spinner in the story's supplemental materials (comics, in this case). In it, the first part of Garmadon's Doomsday Weapon resembles a purple 2012 spinner but with its crown attached to the bottom. However, the first true appearance of a spinner was in "Skeleton Army Ambush!."
  • The Spinners were originally discontinued by the end of 2012. However, they returned in 2017.
  • Wu and Garmadon are the only characters to have spinners who aren't ninja to be shown to use Spinjitzu in the show.
  • The Skulkin mini-figures have arms with horizontally-clipped hands in all their Spinjitzu Spinner set appearances to allow them to hold weapons outward, since unlike normal mini-figures their hands aren't able to move on their own.
  • Most 2020 summer sets included spinners for the board game Choose the Path.
  • The spinners are sometimes included in normal sets to represent Spinjitzu or Shatterspin. These sets are 2519 Skeleton Bowling, 2254 Mountain Shrine, 70640 S.O.G. Headquarters, 71735 Tournament of Elements, 71764 Ninja Training Center, and 71836 Arc Dragon of Focus.
