Ninjago: Legacy

Ninjago: Legacy is a sub-theme of Ninjago dedicated to re-imagining concepts used in classic sets. The first wave released in winter/early 2019 (January 1, 2019, in most countries), consisting of sets from seasons 1 and 2. The second wave released in winter/early 2020, consisting of sets from the pilot episodes and seasons 2–4. The third wave was released in most countries on June 1, 2020, and released in the US and Canada on September 1, 2020, consisting of sets from seasons 1 and 3. The fourth wave released in winter 2021, consisting of sets from seasons 2–5. The fifth wave released in June 2021, consisting of four sets from the pilot episodes and seasons 1 and 5.

Although the subtheme was retired after 2021, a sixth wave, coinciding with Ninjago's fifteen-year anniversary, was released in January 2026.^[1] Ninjago Legacy was succeeded by Ninjago: Core in the Winter 2022 wave.

This is the first wave of Ninjago sets not to use the Masters of Spinjitzu subtitle.
- Although the Spinjitzu Spinners say "Masters of Spinjitzu," they are part of the Legacy line.
Rather than adapt a specific season, these sets honor the franchise's early history; the first wave was made to celebrate the television show's tenth season and "100th episode."
- However, most elements from the sets appear in the show in some way.
  - March of the Oni features the reconstruction of the Monastery of Spinjitzu, complete with a special mural recounting the ninja's history. Some of the mural's drawings depict moments containing aspects from these sets. These scenes were adapted into a series of shorts titled "Tales from the Monastery of Spinjitzu," each short serving to advertise a specific Legacy set.
  - The design of almost all minifigures were used in "Tales from the Monastery of Spinjitzu" and the design of the ninja and Wu were also used in March of the Oni.
  - The new designs of the Golden Weapons featured in the March of the Oni finale, "Endings," are based on their designs in the sets.
  - The 2019 winter sets make appearances in "Tales from the Monastery of Spinjitzu" and in March of the Oni.
    - 70670 Monastery of Spinjitzu appears in all the episodes of "Tales from the Monastery of Spinjitzu." It also appears throughout March of the Oni.
    - 70679 The Ultra Dragon and 70666 The Golden Dragon appear in the second episode of "Tales from the Monastery of Spinjitzu," "Green and Gold." The latter also appears in the last episode of March of the Oni, but only in a vision. The First Spinjitzu Master is shown with it.
    - 70669 Cole's Earth Driller appears in the third episode, "The Weekend Drill." It also appears in March of the Oni.
    - 70667 Kai's Blade Cycle & Zane's Snowmobile appear in the fourth episode, "Elemental Rider."
    - 70668 Jay's Storm Fighter appears in the fifth episode, "Blue Lightning," also making a brief appearance in "Elemental Rider."
    - 70665 The Samurai Mech appears in the final episode, "Samurai X-Treme."
    - 70680 Monastery Training does not appear in "Tales from the Monastery of Spinjitzu."
  - Some of the other sets also make their appearances in the show later.
    - The Lightning off-roader from 71699 Thunder Raider appears as Hyper-Sonic's vehicle in Prime Empire.
    - 71700 Jungle Raider appears as Racer Seven's vehicle in Prime Empire.
    - 71705 Destiny's Bounty appears in Master of the Mountain and onwards as the new version of the Destiny's Bounty.
    - Ronin's design from 71741 Ninjago City Gardens is used since The Island.
    - 71737 X-1 Ninja Charger appears in "Gold Rush."
    - 71753 Fire Dragon Attack appears in "Golden Legend" as the appearance of the dragon keeper in gray color.
  - Despite having Legacy minifigures, Mezmo and the Nindroid Warriors did not change their appearance in the show.
As a nod to the 2011 wave, Kai is the mascot of the 2019 and 2020 Legacy sets, albeit without his signature scar. This is similar to how the original boxes also did not have his scar, as he was depicted with a more generic face design.
- Kai is also the only character to get a focused set in every wave.
  - He got 70667 Kai's Blade Cycle & Zane's Snowmobile in Wave 1, 71701 Kai's Fire Dragon in Wave 2, 71704 Kai Fighter in Wave 3, 71737 X-1 Ninja Charger in Wave 4, and 71734 Kai's Blade Cycle and 71753 Fire Dragon Attack in Wave 5, 71867 X-1 Ninja Charger in Wave 8.
  - He is also the only character to appear in all sets in both Wave 3 and Wave 5 and Wave 6, Wave 8.
Many villainous factions from previous seasons appear in Legacy sets:
- In 70665 The Samurai Mech, 70670 Monastery of Spinjitzu, and 71753 Fire Dragon Attack, it shows the Skulkin as the villains.
  - 71701 Kai's Fire Dragon is a set with no Skulkin in it, but it includes Garmadon with his appearance from the pilot episodes, suggesting the Skulkin as the set's villainous faction.
  - Additionally, 71730 Epic Battle Set - Kai vs. Skulkin also include a Skulkin as an enemy for Kai.
- In 70667 Kai's Blade Cycle & Zane's Snowmobile, 70668 Jay's Storm Fighter, 70679 The Ultra Dragon, 71703 Storm Fighter Battle, 71734 Kai's Blade Cycle, and 71739 Ultra Sonic Raider, it shows the Serpentine as the villains.
  - 70680 Monastery Training and 71705 Destiny's Bounty are also inspired by Rise of the Snakes, but do not feature any villains.
  - Additionally, 71732 Epic Battle Set - Jay vs. Serpentine also include a Serpentine as an enemy for Jay.
- In 70666 The Golden Dragon, 70669 Cole's Earth Driller, and 71702 Golden Mech, it shows the Stone Army as the villains.
  - 71742 Overlord Dragon is also inspired by Season 2, but do not feature any Stone Warriors, only the Overlord.
- In 71699 Thunder Raider, 71704 Kai Fighter, 71737 X-1 Ninja Charger, and 40374 Golden Zane Minifigure Accessory Set, it shows the Nindroids as the villains.
  - Additionally, 71731 Epic Battle Set - Zane vs. Nindroid also include a Nindroid as an enemy for Zane.
- In 71735 Tournament of Elements, 71736 Boulder Blaster, and 71740 Jay's Electro-Mech, it shows the Anacondrai Cultists as the villains.
  - 71700 Jungle Raider is also inspired by Tournament of Elements, but do not feature any villains.
- In 71738 Zane's Titan Mech Battle and 71749 Final Flight of Destiny's Bounty, it shows Ghost Warriors as the villains.
  - Additionally, 71733 Epic Battle Set - Cole vs. Ghost Warrior also include a Ghost Warrior as an enemy for Cole.
On the LEGO Ambassador Network, an interview was posted, in which Tommy Andreasen, Tommy Kalmar, and Michael Knap discuss the Legacy of Ninjago, and it is said that there is "still mountains of LEGO NINJAGO stuff to do."^[2]
Michael Knap has noted that Ninjago: Legacy provides an opportunity to recreate sets to be more accurate to the show.^[3]
For some reason, the set numbers for the Wave 5 sets are inconsistent (71734, 71739, 71749, and 71753).
The dragon symbol on the first Legacy ninja suits was also used on Legacy Wu, who has it on his back. In Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu, Wu has it in the same place. Scott also has it on his clothes and it is also on the side of Lloyd's Arcade Pod.
The reason why Pythor and Lasha appeared in Legacy sets is most likely that their head molds have not yet been retired, as they were used three years earlier in 10722 Snake Showdown (Lasha) and 70596 Samurai X Cave Chaos (Pythor). However, this does not explain the return of Spitta's head mold last used in 2012.
- For the same reason, Rattla and Mezmo appeared in the sets in 2021, using the same head molds as the above-mentioned Venomari tribe.

Lloyd appear in every wave of the set except for wave 5 and wave 8.
Nya appear in every wave of the set except for the 3rd and 7th and 8 waves.
