History[]

Background[]

Like other Elemental Monsters, Mutation Monsters first came into existence before the existence of Elemental Masters^[2] as a result of the disruption of Source Energy by the Weapon of Desolation. After the First Spinjitzu Master split the Weapon of Desolation into two pieces with an incantation on the Tablet of Desolation, the Elemental Monsters were eventually defeated.

Tonight We Hunt Monsters[]

A Mutation Monster was conjured in Umbrasilvis by the Weapon of Desolation. The Explorer's Club dispatched an expedition led by Reginald Slitherbottom to capture the creature, hoping to showcase it as a wonder of the Merged Lands. However, Johnny Courageous, who is secretly a Loyalist, planned to study the Mutation Monster to locate the Weapon of Desolation under the Chief Loyalist's orders.

After the Explorer's Club and the ninja arrived in the village, they encountered the creature. Frak attempted to use his Quake powers but struggled due to the instability of Elemental Powers. As the Mutation Monster escaped, it ran into the Explorer's Club. Wyldfyre intervened but was thrown back by the creature's tentacles. Reginald then tried to ensnare the monster with a net launcher, which initially seemed effective until the creature broke free and prepared to attack him. Frak and Riyu stepped in to help. The Mutation Monster targeted Frak, but Riyu intervened, only to be seized and hit with an energy beam that poisoned him with the Numbness. After Riyu managed to shake off the Monster, Sora created a technological cage to trap the creature before it could strike again.

Later in the Whispering Wood, a Mutation Monster was conjured alongside two Earth Monsters and an Acid Monster as they attacked Lloyd, Arin, and Euphrasia.

A Wonder of the Merged Lands[]

A Mutation Monster was conjured in the City of Imperium, attacking the citizens.

Meanwhile, the Mutation Monster in the Whispering Wood attacked Lloyd, Arin, and Euphrasia, gaining the upper hand. Just then, Zane swooped in, landing on the creature and pinning it down, but soon found himself facing the rest of the Elemental Monsters as well. Lloyd received Life Source Energy from the Trees of Life, regaining control of his powers alongside Zane and Euphrasia. The battle intensified as the Mutation Monster unleashed laser beams at Zane and Arin. While they fought off the Elemental Monsters, Zane created a diversion, allowing Arin to use Object Spinjitzu, launching Spinjitzu-powered rocks at the Mutation Monster. Zane then followed up with an Ice attack, destroying the creature's physical form.

To cure Riyu from the Numbness, Sora and Frak needed to extract Elemental Energy from the Mutation Monster and transfer it to him. Upon arriving at the Expanding Frontier, they found the Explorer's Club celebrating, planning to showcase the Mutation Monster back in Ninjago. Sora managed to extract the energy, which seemed to cause it distress. However, when they administered it to Riyu, it turned out to be insufficient. They realized they needed to gather more energy. Meanwhile, unnoticed by the others, Johnny freed the Mutation Monster to study its nature, resulting in the creature running amok aboard the airship.

Seed and Soil[]

While Sora was searching for the Mutation Monster in the Expanding Frontier, the creature spotted her and attacked the energy extraction device, only for Sora to save herself and the device. The Mutation Monster then escaped from the ship to the village, much to Reginald's annoyance. Frak and Sora followed the monster to Umbrasilvis, where they found it attacking two Umbrasilvans. Thankfully, Sora and Frak saved them and started fighting against the monster, and the two were then joined by Wyldfyre. During the fight, the creature grabbed Sora, which allowed her to collect energy from its neck with the device. The monster then threw her, the movement knocking the device out of her hand. Thankfully, Freya grabbed it. As Sora left with the device to cure Riyu, Frak and Wyldfyre cornered the creature, only for it to transform into a more monstrous form. The monster grabbed them, only for Gweeg to save them by using a Lariat Launcher. Then, the creature continued to chase Frak and Wyldfyre and eventually knocked them, only to be interrupted by Riyu, who came out of the windmill and transformed into a bigger and stronger form much to the combatants' surprise. Riyu fought against the monster and eventually knocked it down. As he was about to land a final strike on the creature, it disappeared.

Just Under the Surface[]

Some Elemental Monsters attacked the Arc Dragon of Life, including a Mutation Monster. Later, it chased Arin and Euphrasia, only for Arin to use his Object Spinjitzu to defeat them all.

Dying to Live[]

During the night, some Elemental Monsters attacked the Whispering Wood, including a Mutation Monster. The Mutation Monster tried to attack Arin, but was knocked back by Zane thanks to his Spinjitzu. However, the Monster knocked Arin and Zane back with its tentacles. Then, it focused on Zane and shot a Life beam at him from its eye, only for the Nindroid to dodge the attack and hit its head. The creature then cornered them with the other Elemental Monsters.

The Heartbeat of all the Realms[]

When the City of Imperium refused to surrender to her and her Loyalists, Beatrix used the Weapon of Desolation to create a massive army of Elemental Monsters, including Mutation Monsters, which she ordered to attack the city and get through the shield. Cole was on the other side with the monsters and he fought all of them by himself.

Abilities[]

• Life Embodiment - Mutation Monsters embody a corrupted form of the Elemental Power of Life.
• Mutakinesis - Mutation Monsters can manipulate a corrupted form of Life which manifests as mutations.
  • Mutakinetic Vision/Optic Lasers - Mutation Monsters can fire mutation beams/lasers from their single eyes.
    • Poison Inducement - Mutation Monsters can inflict a deadly poison onto their victims, as one was able to poison Riyu with the Numbness by blasting him with its optical beams multiple times.
  • Mutakinetic Blasts - Mutation Monsters can fire blasts of mutation energy from their hands and tentacles.
  • Personal Mutation Manipulation - Mutation Monsters can manipulate and trigger mutations within themselves.
  • Evolution Inducement - The energy of Mutation Monsters can induce evolutions if directly injected, as it triggered an evolutionary process in Riyu, causing him to grow larger and become stronger.
    • Power Amplification - The Mutation Monsters’ energy can also amplify powers if directly injected as it did to Riyu, whose dragon energy was amplified.
  • Muta-Spathígenesis - Mutation Monsters can create katanas from mutation energy.
• Tentaculokinesis - Mutation Monsters can freely manipulate their tentacles, using them like legs to move around.
  • Prehensile Tentacles - Mutation Monsters can stretch their tentacles to great lengths to grab their enemies.
  • Surface Scaling - Mutation Monsters can scale surfaces using their tentacles.
    • Wallcrawling - Mutation Monsters can cling to walls with their tentacles.
      • Ceiling Adhesion - Mutation Monsters can cling to ceilings with their tentacles.
  • Tentacle Projectiles - Mutation Monsters can charge the pointed tips of their tentacles with energy and launch them as projectiles.
    • Regrowth - Mutation Monsters can quickly regrow the fired tips of their tentacles to use them again.
  • Superhuman Speed - Mutation Monsters can use their tentacles to move at super fast speed.
  • Power Tentacles - One Mutation Monster's tentacles were strong enough to knock people aside and restrain Riyu.
• Superhuman Strength - Like other Elemental Monsters, Mutation Monsters have abnormally large strength, as seen when one ripped open a huge vent in the Expanding Frontier with its bare hands.
• Superhuman Durability - Like other Elemental Monsters, Mutation Monsters are abnormally durable, being able to survive both blunt force and sharp attacks with little to no damage.
• Absolute Immortality - Like other Elemental Monsters, Mutation Monsters can't be truly killed. When their physical forms are destroyed, they revert to the Source Energy that the Weapon of Desolation used to bring them into existence and reform as long as the weapon remains active.
• Concept Empowerment - If exposed to the unstable Source Energy in the Weapon of Desolation, Mutation Monsters can enter an empowered state which grants them increased size, strength, and durability.
  • Combat Augmentation - Like other Elemental Monsters, the combat capabilities of Mutation Monsters are increased in their empowered state.
    • Strength Augmentation - Like other Elemental Monsters, Mutation Monsters are significantly stronger in their empowered state.
    • Defense Augmentation - Like other Elemental Monsters, Mutation Monsters are significantly more durable in their empowered state.
  • Size Augmentation - If empowered by the Weapon of Desolation, Mutation Monsters immediately take on their larger mutated forms.
    • Limited Shapeshifting - Mutation Monsters take on a more monstrous form if empowered by the Weapon of Desolation.
• Conceptuportation - Like other Elemental Monsters, Mutation Monsters can teleport by scattering into beams or bolts of Source energy and reforming in different locations.

• Elemental Powers - Elemental Powers can destroy the Mutation Monsters' physical forms.
  • Technology - Technology can contain Mutation Monsters and disable their Elemental Powers.
• Object Spinjitzu - Object Spinjitzu can destroy the Mutation Monsters' physical forms.
• Weapon of Desolation - Being creations of the Weapon of Desolation, Mutation Monsters are to obey the will of whoever wields it. Their existence also depends on the weapon, as it can summon and seal them away at will.

Instructions for the model[]

Main article: Mutation Monster (set)

A large monstrous version of the Mutation Monster was requested by the animation studio to the set designers. It appears in Season 4 but its brick built design didn't find its way into the sets.^[3][4] However, the model was designed by Chi Wing Lee and unofficial instructions of the model made by LegendsOfNinjago were distributed to the fans through Ninjago Wiki's official friend, Masters of Brickjitzu.

Trivia[]

• In a set interview, when asked if the Mutation Monsters were meant to represent Life as a mutated Elemental Power, Chi Wing Lee acknowledged that while this concept was the idea, it is actually hard to assert definitively, given the existence of other elements. For instance, the Mutation Monsters could also be interpreted as representing Poison.^[5]
• The name "Mutation Monster" was chosen because "Life Monster" did not seem fitting to the concept of the Elemental Monsters.^[5]
• They are referred to as "Tentacle Monsters" in Germany.
• They wear sandogasa hats like Rox and Kur.
  • They are also the only type of Elemental Monsters to wear hats.
• Their color scheme and eye design share similarities with the Queen of Monsters.
• They are the first Ninjago characters to use the larger head mold, which was originally designed for big figures.
• The cloth piece they wear in the show are very similar to the ones on the Howlers.
• In one shot, it seems they have no legs in the show. However, this could be simply due to animation restrictions as characters like Zarkt also don't have legs under their gown, although his bottom is solid while the Mutation Monsters have nothing underneath their cloth.
