Overview

“You never should have played with dark magic, boy.”

Dark Magic, also known as Dark Arts,[1] is the dark counterpart of Magic. Dark Magic is similar to its lighter counterpart, albeit darker and more evil as its name suggests. It is generally associated with purple, but also with dark blue, lime, or red depending on the type of Dark Magic. Clouse, the servant of Chen, is a prominent user of Dark Magic. Master Yang is another user when he used the Yin Blade to open a rift to the Departed Realm, similar to how Clouse opened a portal to the Cursed Realm. According to Mystake, the Oni could manipulate their Destruction to summon a powerful Dark Magic.[2] The other users of Magic cannot possess the Dark version of it unless they learn it from a powerful source.

Dark Magic was first mentioned when Lord Garmadon said that the latent Dark Magic in the Land of Madness made him stronger, thus giving him his four arms.[3]

Spells tie together with magic; many of them were written in the Book of Spells. However, the spellbook was burnt by Lloyd as a tribute to his father's sacrifice.

Millenia ago[]

Millennia before the Ritual of the Blood Moon, the Forbidden Five would be given Elemental Powers by Thunderfang. The Five would combine their newfound powers with Theroxian, allowing them to access Theroxian Magic, a special form of Dark Magic that existed before them and became intertwined with the very primordial essence of Chaos.[4] Theroxian magic was one of the many powers used by the Forbidden Five as the group initiated a campaign of conquest upon the Wyldness after they became corrupted by the dragon's dark energy.

Nineko convinced herself that the only way she could be better than the First Spinjitzu Master was by becoming immortal, so she studied Dark Magic and used her new abilities to drain the life force out of the crops from Komala's village in an attempt to empower her own life force, but instead caused the crops to turn black and die.[5]

Centuries ago[]

During the Edo period, an order of spellcasters known as Edo Sorcerers rose to prominence in southern Ninjago. The order's members and acolytes practiced an unstable type of dark magic called Edo magic ("Earth magic" when translated from the Old Tongue) that drew from the Elemental Power of Earth. To wield their magic more efficiently, the Edo Sorcerers invented a new form of architecture that concentrated the latent elemental energy of Earth in Ninjago into reservoirs that they could channel. Ultimately, the unstable nature of Edo magic became its wielders' downfall, with a majority of the order being wiped out. All that was left of the Edo Sorcerers was their relics and architecture, such as the Temple of Airjitzu. The teachings of Edo magic would be preserved by the few survivors of the order and passed down through dwindling generations until their legacy would be inherited centuries later by Clouse, the last living descendant of the original Edo Sorcerers.[6]

While searching for the key to immortality, Master Yang's studies led him to discover the Yin Blade. Experimenting with its mystical life-giving properties, he used it to resurrect several deceased samples of flora, before attempting to use its magic on himself in order to achieve immortality. However, the experiment was flawed and instead, it resulted in him and his students becoming ghosts, trapped between the realms of the living and departed and unable to leave the Temple of Airjitzu. Before losing the Yin Blade, Yang's ghost would use the weapon to bind the ghosts of his students to his will. The Yin Blade would eventually find its way to the Ninjago Museum of History, where it was placed in a container of pure Clearstone.[7]

Centuries before the Battle for Shintaro Mountain, a powerful sorcerer named Hazza D'ur fled from Mysterium for his practice of Necromancy, an advanced form of Dark Magic that can reanimate the dead under the user's control, and created a city inside Shintaro Mountain using Dark Magic. At one point after that, he was vanquished, but the Dark Magic still remained in his skull, allowing his soul to persist.[8]

Decades ago[]

More than forty years ago, when Garmadon trained with Clouse in Chen's monastery, Clouse used Dark Magic to bring the training equipment to life but was defeated by Garmadon using Spinjitzu.[9]

Shortly after the Serpentine War, Garmadon used the Book of Spells to banish the Anacondrai generals to the Cursed Realm.[9]

Prior to Master of the Mountain[]

Some years ago, Vangelis learned that in the Dungeons of Shintaro housed a powerful artifact of Dark Magic, the Skull of Hazza D'ur, and therefore tasked the Lowly to retrieve it so it could be destroyed and keep Shintaro safe.

The adventurers managed to overcome all the traps and enter the restricted cave, where Hazza D'ur's skull was placed on a pedestal under a large statue. Korgran tried to take it with his hands, but the skull immediately came to life and tried to corrupt him with Dark Magic. However, Korgran managed to drop the skull and it remained dormant. Later, when Vangelis took the skull, Hazza D'ur's soul then appeared in the skull again and began working with Vangelis.[10]

Over the following years, Vangelis began using the skull's power and reanimated the deceased warriors to enslave the Munce and Geckles, who were forced to mine Vengestone for him in the Mines of Shintaro.[10]

Tournament of Elements[]

Only One Can Remain[]

When Lloyd tried to get the Jadeblade, Clouse used Dark Magic to animate the Anacondrai symbol on the carpet to snag Lloyd's leg and hold him in place. However, Garmadon jumped on Clouse and disrupted his spell.

Spellbound[]

When Jay refused to surrender to Clouse, the sorcerer used Dark Magic to create a stone mech from the surrounding material.

The Day of the Dragon[]

As Garmadon fought Clouse in the jungle, the sorcerer used an Edo incantation to open a portal to the Cursed Realm, where he tried to banish Garmadon, but was defeated and banished instead.

Later, Kapau and Chope performed the Spell of Transformation from the Book of Spells to turn themselves, their master, and the rest of the Anacondrai Cultists into Anacondrai.

The Corridor of Elders[]

When Pythor brought the Book of Spells to the Destiny's Bounty, Lloyd used a spell to banish Garmadon to the Cursed Realm to release the Anacondrai generals from their imprisonment, who proceeded to curse Chen and his army.

Day of the Departed[]

When Cole stole the Yin Blade and went to the Temple of Airjitzu, confronting Yang with the weapon and attempting to attack, he accidentally shatters a jar containing an exit from the Departed Realm and activates it, freeing the souls of Samukai, Kozu, Cryptor, Chen, Morro, Eyezor, Zugu, three Nindroids, and two Stone Swordsmen and Stone Scouts, releasing them onto Ninjago, where they all possessed mannequins of themselves at the Ninjago Museum of History.

Triumphant with the presence of the Yin Blade and the souls of past villains to distract the rest of the ninja, Yang proceeded to seize the weapon from Cole with the help of his deceased students and explained his plan to use the latent magic of the Yin-Yang Eclipse to catalyze the powers of the Yin Blade and cut a rift through reality that would allow him to escape from his state of limbo.

With the Yin Blade in hand, Yang proceeded to go to the roof of his temple and activated the artifact, using its reality-warping powers to open the Rift of Return. However, Cole, confronting him, attacked Yang, forcing the latter to defend himself with the Yin Blade. He succeeds, slicing apart Cole's weapon in the process. However, when Cole's friends arrived to support him, he unlocked and used his Earth Punch to attack Yang, who attempted to shield himself with the Yin Blade. Unable to withstand the assault, the Yin Blade was shattered by Cole's attack, and with its destruction and the ending Yin-Yang Eclipse, Yang's students were released from his power and the Rift of Return closed as a result.

Way of the Departed[]

Sons of Garmadon[]

The Jade Princess[]

When the ninja cornered Mr. E in front of the Mask of Deception's display case, he brought along the Oni Mask of Vengeance and put it on, where it gave him two additional arms and swords. Mr. E fought off the ninja, eventually knocking them down after utilizing the mask's power to use Jay's Lightning against them.

Snake Jaguar[]

Killow used the Oni Mask of Deception to lift rocks into the air in an attempt to crush Zane during the bike race after finding out he was a spy, trying to make him lose the race. However, Zane managed to dodge all of his attacks, forcing Killow to escape with the mask while Mr. E fought Zane.

Game of Masks[]

Lloyd and Harumi managed to locate the Oni Mask of Hatred within the Oni Temple. Harumi attempted to grab it, but since it was protected by Oni Sorcery, she couldn't touch it. She then explained to Lloyd that someone with Oni blood can obtain the mask. Later, Harumi caught it while she managed to use her dagger to hold onto the side of the platform. Armed with the Oni Mask of Hatred, Harumi put it on, using its powers to jump back onto the platform. Lloyd questions what the mask did to her, where she reveals that it has made her invincible to all forms of damage. Harumi then proceeded to flee from the temple with the mask, utilizing her invincibility to destroy the temple in an effort to destroy Lloyd.

Harumi soon regrouped with the Sons of Garmadon, where she took off the Oni Mask of Hatred as Killow rejoiced that they now have all three. Later, the ninja and Sons of Garmadon fought Crabby, with Mr. E and Killow utilizing the Oni Masks of Vengeance and Deception to help fight the beast.

Dread on Arrival[]

Killow and Ultra Violet used the Oni Masks of Deception and Hatred to fend off the Ninjago City Police while Harumi and the other Sons of Garmadon members help finalize the Temple of Resurrection within the Royal Palace.

Later on, Mr. E, Killow, and Ultra Violet all placed the three Oni Masks into position at the ceremony. The masks then levitated from their hands, floating in a triangle formation. As Harumi recited the ritual, the three masks lighted up, connecting each other with beams of Oni Sorcery, which soon created a rift to the Departed Realm. Eventually, the ninja arrived to stop the resurrection of Lord Garmadon, where they were successful in rescuing Lloyd and Misako and preventing Harumi in finishing the ritual. Despite this however, they were too late; Lord Garmadon was reborn.

Hunted[]

The Weakest Link[]

Skylor found the Mask of Hatred and suggests that if Lloyd's power doesn't return then it might help him. Mystake warns Lloyd about the dangers of using the mask as "Oni power is dark magic." Skylor asks for his choice of using it. Lloyd goes back in and throws it in front of Harumi.

Saving Faith[]

After Mystake transformed into her true Oni form, she summon a staff using Oni Sorcery to form a black whirlwind to allow Skylor to copy Garmadon's Destruction.

March of the Oni[]

The Darkness Comes[]

The darkness spread throughout Ninjago City, with its tentacles petrifying anyone who were touched by them.

Into the Breach[]

Clouds of Oni Sorcery were under the Bounty when it was flying above Ninjago City and they were also in Borg Tower when Lloyd and his father walked through to get to the Realm Crystal.

The Fall[]

Garmadon and Lloyd ran into the clouds to run away from Oni. Soon, P.I.X.A.L. dived into the clouds to help them. Meanwhile, trying to save anyone left from the clouds, Cole fell in and the clouds surrounded him.

Endings[]

Cole tried to run through the clouds to get to the Earth Driller. He almost fell ill to it but made in time.

Later, when the ninja, Garmadon, Faith, and Wu retreated from the Oni, clouds of Oni Sorcery climbed over the monastery walls.

Master of the Mountain[]

Into the Dark[]

The Skull Sorcerer had the Skull of Hazza D'ur with him and used its Dark Magic to punish the Munce and Geckles after they stopped working. Cole entered the Skull Keep and defeated the Re-Awakened to stop Vangelis, who used the Skull of Hazza D'ur to reassemble the skeletal army.

Grief-Bringer[]

After Vangelis learned that the ninja were convincing the Munce and Geckles to have a truce meeting, he used the Skull of Hazza D'ur's necromancy to transform into the Skull Sorcerer and reanimate Grief-Bringer.

The Son of Lilly[]

The Skull Sorcerer continued to use the Skull of Hazza D'ur to fight Cole and then used it to destroy the Blades of Deliverance. Eventually, the Skull Sorcerer used the skull to overwhelm Cole, who soon unlocked the Spinjitzu Burst and destroyed the Skull of Hazza D'ur. This in return destroyed Vangelis' source of power and reverted the reanimated skeletons back to bones.

Dragons Rising, Season 2[]

Beyond the Phantasm Cave[]

Jordana was studying the Theroxian scrolls which allow her to use her crystal ball to locate Bonzle in the Land of Lost Things, Jordana realized she is the essential spell required for the Ritual of the Blood Moon.

Secrets of the Wyldness[]

Jordana used her crystal ball to locate the ninja. Ras ordered Jordana to take immediate action to thwart the ninja from interfering. Despite Jordana's initial concern regarding the distance and her ability to wield Theroxian magic effectively, she managed to conjure a powerful storm through the crystal ball, ultimately causing the Destiny's Bounty to crash, separating the ninja.

Jordana would later track Cole, Zane, and Bonzle to a Magical storagehouse, where she used Theroxian magic to take control of the protective container that was supposed to protect Bonzle and trap Cole, Zane, and Gandalaria in an Imperium electro cage.

The Forest of Spirits[]

Jordana continued to use her Theroxian magic to put the protective container, with a trapped Bonzle, in the Explorer.

Rising Ninja[]

Jordana channeled her Theroxian magic to begin the Ritual of the Blood Moon. She directed her Theroxian magic toward Bonzle, reverting the latter to her base form. With the binding spell successfully undone, Jordana opened a portal to the Nether-Space, freeing Nokt after Ras knocked Kai into the portal. Bonzle began to resist Jordana's control, attempting to seal the portal to prevent the remaining members of the Forbidden Five from escaping. She ultimately succeeded in closing the portal, causing Jordana to fall. However, Rox used magic to release her soul from her body, possessing the girl.

The Final Game[]

Ras threatened Nokt and Rox as he called upon Cinder and the wolf warriors. However, Rox, harnessing Theroxian magic, managed to take control Cinder and the Wolf Mask Warriors.

Elements of Betrayal[]

Rox used Theroxian magic and casted a static spell on Nya, Zane, and Cole (in the Elemental Earth Mech). When Nokt freed the rest of the Forbidden Five, Rox's soul returned to her body and Jordana managed to cancel out the static spell.

Dragons Rising, Season 3[]

Fallen Wishes[]

On Djinjago, Rox attempted to use Theroxian magic but Sora wished for her feet to be stuck to the ground.

Chaos Reigns[]

Ras used Theroxian magic to trap all of Wu's orbs in the protective container and took him to the Monastery of Gates.

Users' abilities

Users' abilities[]

  • Umbra-Mystokinesis: The user can manipulate dark magic and create spells and possess objects. In "Spellbound," it was shown to be both offensive and defensive, being that Clouse was able to protect himself from Garmadon. Also can use magic spells to attack or defend (like in "The Corridor of Elders," when Lloyd uses a spell to bring back the spirits of Anacondrai generals).
    • Transmogrification: Allows the user to alter the appearance of objects, shown when Clouse transforms some of the training objects in his fight with Garmadon. This is also seen when the Anacondrai Cultists transform into Anacondrai by the use of Clouse's Book of Spells and the fact that Nineko had permanently turned into an anthropomorphic cat.
    • Mystokinetic Blast: The user can release dark magical energy over a specific target, causing great damage or delivering great shock waves of force.
    • Mystokinetic Beam Emission: Some users of magic can create a potent beam composed of concentrated dark magical energy.
    • Mystokinetic Constructs: Allows the user to create tools, objects, weapons, and other items using dark magic.
    • Umbra-Elementumkinesis: Allows the user to manipulate stronger and darker versions of all the elements/powers/abilities. Clouse used this to fight Jay with his stone mech and later utilize a darker version of Nature.
    • Animation: Allows the user to animate statues, sculptures, drawings into very powerful dark creatures under their control.
    • Mystoportation: This allows to the user to teleport whenever and wherever they desire via magical smoke/dust/mist or teleporting quickly.
    • Mysto-Shapeshifting: This allows the user to shapeshift into any creature via magical smoke/dust/mist. Garmadon and the Oni are able to use this to shapeshift and Nineko was able to use it to turn into a cat.
    • Mystokinetic Incantation: It allows the user to conjure a powerful spell by chanting in an ancient tongue as demonstrated by Clouse as he repeatedly chants incantations to cast powerful spells. This ability can also empower dark magic users as Lord Garmadon said that Dark Magic in the Land of Madness made him stronger, thus giving him his four arms.
    • Magical Portal Creation: This was seen when Clouse chanted an Edo incantation to open a portal to the Cursed Realm in an attempt to banish Garmadon but ended up being banished there himself by the latter. A user can also open up portals to other realms by use of incantations.
    • Necromancy: This allows the user to bring back the dead in the form of re-awakened skeletons, such as the Re-Awakened or Grief-Bringer.
    • Corruption Inducement/Evil Transformation: When touched with a dark magical artifact like the Skull of Hazza D'ur, it corrupts the user by changing their appearance and character into evil.
    • Summoning: Using Dark Magic, Nineko can summon monsters from various parts of the island of Ninjago.
      • Shadow summoning - As shown with Garmadon and Clouse, the user is able to summon shadows, a type of ethereal being that can be formed from somebody's shadow, becoming a featureless and transparent black copy of the template with glowing red eyes. Armed with shadow copies of whatever weapons their template was holding at the time, shadows are invulnerable to physical blows, able to harm physical beings while the latter could not do the same and are capable of duplicating themselves, although they are susceptible to blasts of Elemental energy, other shadows, and Golden Power. Similarly, they have the ability to use their powers to create a shadow duplicate of themself in order to interact with the world to some extent.
    • Living hair: Using Dark Magic, Nineko can revive her hair to fulfill her tasks.
    • Curse Inducement: Users have the ability to cast a curse on anything they desire. Some instances include sending someone to the Cursed Realm through the utilization of the Book of Spells or abusing a Djinn artifact, leading to the individual being hunted down by a Howler.
    • Creating the Warriors of Felis: Using Dark Magic in her umbrella, Nineko can create rain cats called the Warriors of Felis.
    • Tempestagenesis: This was seen when Jordana managed to summon a powerful storm that knocked the Bounty off course.
    • Soul Projection/Transferal - The user can project their souls from their bodies and transfer them into other people’s bodies. This was seen when Rox released her soul from her body and moved it into Jordana’s body in order to escape as the Nether-Space portal was closing.
      • Possession - The user can possess other people. This was seen when Rox (after transferring her soul to Jordana's body) was able to possess the Imperian girl in months.
        • Psychic link - The user has the ability to establish a physical link between their body and the host they are inhabiting. This was demonstrated when Rox, while controlling Jordana, formed a physical connection between the Merged Realms and the Nether Space. Additionally, other members of the Forbidden Five utilized Rox's body to communicate with both her and Nokt.
    • Spell Manipulation - The user can manipulate spells, such as when Jordana took control of Bonzle, reverted her to her true form, and made her open the gateway to the Nether-Space.
      • Spell Negation - The user can also negate spells, such as when Jordana broke the spell that bound the Finders to the Land of Lost Things and later the static spell that Rox had cast on the Ninja.
    • Dowsing - The user can locate anything that are hidden, as seen when Rox traced one of the Prismatic Blades' location underwater.
