Elemental Masters

“They were the First Spinjitzu Master's guardians, each endowed with an Elemental Power that has passed down through generations.”

Elemental Masters (also known as Elementals) are beings who wield one of the many elements of the Merged Realms. Before the birth of his sons,[1] the First Spinjitzu Master shared his power with a number of individuals who became their realm's first Elemental Masters and his guardians.[2][3][4] Their powers have been passed down for hundreds of generations.[5]

Millennia ago, a tournament of Elemental Powers called the Tournament of the Sources was created to honor the Source Dragons and the Elemental Powers they created. The Elemental Masters would compete to be crowned Champion of the Sources.

During the First Serpentine War, Ninjago's Elemental Masters of the era allied to protect the citizens from the Serpentine and formed the Elemental Alliance, with there descendants taking part in the Tournament of Elements.

After the Merge, a new generation of Elemental Masters came to existence, with new elemental powers being created and elements that didn't have any users finding new hosts. Some years later, the first Tournament of the Sources since the Merge took place, and the current Elemental Masters of every realm were invited to compete.

After the Battle of the Spectral Lands, all Elemental Masters began to have complications with their Elemental Powers.

Succession

Succession[]

An Elemental Master's power is most typically known to be passed down from parent to child. If the parents are both Elemental Masters, the child is either born with one or the other of the parents' powers. When a child inherits their parent's power, the parent loses their element upon the birth of the child.[6][7] However, there are rare exceptions when the child of an Elemental Master receives their power later in life.[8] One example of this is Obscuria.

Generally, there cannot be two masters of an element at once,[9] the one known exception being the Time Twins, who are twin brothers. In most cases, if twins are born to an Elemental Master, the firstborn will inherit the element.[10][11] In the case of Zeatrix and Beatrix, the former inherited their father's power because she was the oldest by a few minutes. However, Acronix and Krux are a special case because the power of Time is easily divisible, allowing it to be distributed among the two as different abilities derived from the same power.[12]

It is also possible for an Elemental Master to willingly pass their power to someone they are not related to, as Hibernus gave his power to Zane, a Nindroid.[13] If an Elemental Master dies before they pass on their power, it will usually find a new host, even being able to find one from another realm.[14][15][16] Nya has stated that powers can skip a generation,[17] but this may be incorrect.[18]

Those related to the First Spinjitzu Master appear not to lose their powers upon their children gaining theirs, as Garmadon and Lloyd are able to have the same power at the same time. Their powers are not truly "elements," nor are they Elemental Masters in the same sense the others are.

Elemental essences

Elemental essences[]

Elemental essences are powers that aren't considered 'elements' in the conventional sense. Unlike Elemental Powers, there can be multiple users of an essence who are generally not referred to as Elemental Masters. This may apply to an entire species, such as the Oni with Destruction.

Golden Power[]

Golden Power is an elemental essence that is the opposite of Darkness and related to Creation and Destruction,[19] originally used by the First Spinjitzu Master. It allows the user to wield offensive energy attacks and make "constructs" that appear to be mostly made of energy rather than matter. They are also able to wield and control large amounts of the four elements of Creation. Its colors are gold and golden yellow just like its Spinjitzu and corresponds with the Golden Dragon. Unlike Lloyd, Master Wu and Garmadon aren't able to use the Golden Power, as their powers are not as refined as his.

Creation[]

Creation is an elemental essence originally belonging to the dragons. It is the opposite of Destruction and closely tied to Golden Power and Darkness. Its Spinjitzu is a dull gold, white, and yellow (different to Golden Power's brighter gold Spinjitzu), which are the colors it is associated with, and corresponds with Master Wu's dragon. It is composed of Earth, Fire, Ice, and Lightning. It grants the power of materiokinesis, giving the user the ability to create and manipulate both organic and inorganic matter and use it for multiple purposes or as Master Wu said while describing the Tornado of Creation, "create something, out of nothing." As demonstrated with the Tornado of Creation, the ninja were able to create things like a massive Ferris Wheel, a gigantic slingshot, and the Ultra Sonic Raider. Also, the user can manipulate the four elements of Creation, due to the power being composed of them.

Darkness[]

Darkness is an elemental essence that is the opposite of Golden Power (in some cases, it represents evil and shadow) and closely tied to Creation[19] and Destruction.[21] It corresponds with the Overlord and the Island of Darkness and is associated with the colors lavender, pink, and black. It grants the power of umbrakinesis, allowing the user to shoot powerful dark beams, propel themselves forward (often through the air), form a field of absolute darkness, and create dark crystals. A form of it made up the Great Devourer's venom, which then coursed through Garmadon's veins, corrupting him.

Destruction[]

Destruction is an elemental essence originally belonging to the Oni. It is the opposite of Creation and closely tied to and influenced by Darkness, along with Golden Power.[19] Its Spinjitzu is dark purple, which is the color it is associated with. It grants the user control over destructive energy and mastery over dark magic.

Elements of Creation[]

Fire[]

Fire is one of the Elements of Creation. Its Spinjitzu is orange and red, it corresponds with the Sword of Fire and the Fire Dragon, and is generally associated with the colors red, orange, and occasionally yellow. It grants the power of pyrokinesis, allowing the user to shoot fireballs, propel themselves upward, and melt matter like the element of Ice.

Ice[]

Ice is one of the Elements of Creation. Its Spinjitzu is light blue and white, it corresponds with the Shurikens of Ice and the Ice Dragon, and is generally associated with the colors light blue and white. It grants the power of cryokinesis, allowing the user to freeze enemies solid, create strong ice constructs (like escape routes), or to extinguish fire(s).

Lightning[]

Lightning is one of the Elements of Creation. Its Spinjitzu is blue, it corresponds with the Nunchucks of Lightning and the Lightning Dragon, and is generally associated with the colors blue, white, and occasionally yellow. It grants the power of electrokinesis, allowing the user to release electricity, charge up and sometimes overload electrical devices/systems, and electrocute enemies.

Earth[]

Earth is one of the Elements of Creation. It represents rock, dust, and other minerals of the ground. Its Spinjitzu is brown, it corresponds with the Scythe of Quakes and the Earth Dragon, and is generally associated with the colors brown, orange, green, and black. It grants the power of geokinesis, allowing the user to cause earthquakes and fissures, immobilize enemies, move tectonic plates, and in some cases, control sand.

Life[]

Life is an element associated with the color green. It grants the power of ergokinesis/vitakinesis, allowing the user to shoot powerful life energy projections, create an energy force field or motorcycle, and infuse objects with life energy (turning them green on occasions). Its Spinjitzu is green and corresponds with the Energy Dragon.

Water[]

Water is an element associated with the colors cyan/light blue and teal and related to Ice. It grants the power of hydrokinesis, allowing the user to control water, create water shields, spheres, and blasts, and generate tidal waves.

Metal[]

Metal is an element associated with the color silver/gray. It allows the user to become entirely metal, granting them incredible resistance to all sorts of attacks. Their metal form also strengthens the power of their attacks and augments their heights slightly.

Light[]

Light is an element associated with the color white (but is otherwise colorless similarly to the spectrum of light itself). It allows the user to project a beam of light and can be used defensively by turning invisible. In this temporary form, they can evade attacks easily and even retreat though it can be revealed with dust.

Speed[]

Speed is an element associated with the colors white and red/crimson. It allows the user to run at extreme speed, surpassing the fastest things in the world. This element also allows them to evade attacks very easily and land blows of their own with great efficiency.

Smoke[]

Smoke is an element associated with the colors gray and light orange. It allows the user to become entirely smoke to evade attacks and obstacles. If it is offensive, they can counterattack with a flurry of attacks. It can also be used defensively to teleport around, avoiding hits and confusing the enemy.

Mind[]

Mind is an element associated with the colors gray, white, and navy blue. It allows the user to read other people's minds and predict their next moves, useful for evading attacks. It can also be used offensively to give the enemy a headache and control their mind.

Gravity[]

Gravity is an element associated with the colors red/maroon, black, and purple/violet. It allows the user to propel themselves in the air, as well as move objects and people around in it. This can be used to counter projectiles by manipulating gravity so they would fly back to the caster/shooter.

Nature[]

Nature is an element associated with the colors forest green and brown. It allows the user to create plants for trapping enemies and even connect with nature. It can also be used to defend oneself by creating a plant to block a projectile shot.

Sound[]

Sound is an element associated with the color teal. It allows the user to create sound blasts to attack a direction they aim at. It can also be used to create many noises and release a sonic scream.

Poison[]

Poison is an element associated with the colors lime and teal. It allows the user to create poison and toxic clouds with special effects like Serpentine venom.[citation needed] The toxic clouds enable them to poison the enemy as well.

Shadow[]

Shadow is an element associated with the color black. It allows its user to blend in with shadows to attack the enemy. It can also be used to teleport via shadows.

Form[]

Form is an element associated with the colors purple/violet and yellow. It allows the user to shape-shift into another human.

Amber[]

Amber is an element associated with the colors orange and amber. It allows the user to copy any Elemental Master's power temporarily.

Wind[]

Wind is an element associated with the colors jade/green and white. It grants the power of aerokinesis, enabling flight and control over wind, as well as creating strong wind gusts and powerful tornadoes.

Time[]

Time is an element associated with the colors orange/amber, green, red, and blue. It grants the power of chronokinesis, allowing the user to speed up, stop, reverse, and slow down the flow of time.

Technology is an element associated with the colors purple and pink. It grants the power of technokinesis, enabling control over technology and other machinery.

Heat[]

Heat is an element associated with the colors orange, fire engine red, and blue. It grants the power of calokinesis, allowing the user to manipulate heat. It can also be used in the form of fireballs similar to the element of Fire, or as a form of defense via creating a "firewall".

Fusion is an element associated with the colors white, lavender/purple, green, yellow, and light blue. It allows the user to fuse multiple objects but not living beings.

Shockwave[]

Shockwave is an element associated with the colors indigo and lavender. It allows the user to release a powerful blast of shockwave as an offensive move.

Plants[]

Plants is an element associated with the colors bright green and pink. It allows the user to grow and control plant life.

Quake[]

Quake is an element associated with the colors light orange and yellow. It grants the power of vibrokinesis, allowing the user to cause vibrations.

Reflex[]

Reflex is an element associated with the colors red and scarlet. It allows the user to quickly react to attacks and dodge them with ease.

Balance[]

Balance is an element associated with the color lemon. It allows the user to maintain their balance effortlessly with great athleticism, useful for running on tightropes.

Surface Tension[]

Surface Tension is an element associated with the colors turquoise and teal. It allows the user to control the surface tension of matter, like turning water into bubbles.

Size[]

Size is an element associated with the color yellow. It allows the user to change their own size, either to grow giant or shrink to a very small size.

Figment[]

Figment is an element associated with the color white/ivory. It allows the user to manipulate and cast illusions, enabling them to duplicate themselves.

Propulsion[]

Propulsion is an element associated with the colors light red and yellow. It allows the user to transform into a sphere and propel themselves forward, allowing them to roll around at high speeds.

Brute Force[]

Brute Force is an element associated with the colors light red and magenta. It allows the user to charge themselves with an immense level of power, allowing them to overcome physical obstacles and limitations.

Fear[]

Fear is an element associated with the color dark red. It allows the user to manipulate and cause other people to experience fear.

Misfortune[]

Misfortune is an element associated with the colors fluorescent red and crimson. It allows the user to harm other individuals with bad luck.

Swarm[]

Swarm is an element associated with the colors red/vermillion and black. It allows the user to manipulate and generate insects. It can also be used to transform into a swarm of insects to evade attacks and overwhelm opponents.

Decay[]

Decay is an element associated with the colors red, orange, and rust. It allows the user to make other individuals decompose.

Kismet[]

Kismet is an element. Its power is currently unknown, but it may be affiliated with Fate or destiny manipulation.

Portals (canonicity unknown)[]

Portals is an element associated with the colors yellow, saffron, and orange. It allows the user to create and summon portals.

Imagination (non-canon)[]

Imagination is an element associated with the colors gray and azure. It allows the user to create and manipulate anything they imagine.

  • All of the Elemental Fighters of the Tournament of Elements have been released in sets.
  • Scrapped Elemental Masters include the Masters of Magnetism, Crystal, and Sight.[30][31] Water and Time were both considered for Tournament of Elements but were not used until later.[32][33]
  • According to Chris "Doc" Wyatt, Elemental Masters are immune to negative effects of their own powers (i.e. an Elemental master of Smoke would not get ill from their own smoke).[34]
  • It was previously unknown how Zane was an Elemental Master since he is a Nindroid without any biological connections to an Elemental Master.
    • Hibernus, the previous Elemental Master of Ice, was later revealed to have somehow passed his element down to Zane.
  • A dull gold-colored dragon appears in a flashback in "Spellbound", being ridden by an unidentified Elemental Master. The dragon's appearance strongly resembles that of the Gravity Dragon, yet its rider is not Levi, who was also around in that time period. According to Tommy Andreasen, this Elemental Master is most likely the Master of Form taking on an appearance.[35]
  • All of the main colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, gray, black, and white) correspond with at least one element.
  • A character named Lar appeared in a Tournament of Elements activity book, supposedly the Master of Water. However, this proved to be non-canon when Nya was revealed to be the Master of Water in the TV series.[36] In Way of the Departed, he was said to be a charlatan who spreads rumors that he was a Master of Water and fought in the Tournament of Elements.
  • The Time Twins are the only Elemental Masters who had their powers stolen permanently, as well as the only two with the same elemental power.
  • So far, there are seventeen Elements that are currently not known to be confined to a human host. Those are Ice, Time, Fusion, Propulsion, Figment, Balance, Plants, Reflex, Quake, Size, Sound, Surface Tension, Brute Force, Fear, Swarm, Misfortune, and Decay.
  • Elemental Masters likely age differently than normal humans.[37][38] This can be observed with former Masters Ray, Maya, and Krux. Ray and Maya appear relatively young due to having their powers for a long time before losing them after the births of their children. Krux was stripped of his powers over forty years ago, rendering him a normal human, and thus he is an old man in the present.
  • Sometimes, elemental masters refer to each other by their elements rather than their names. This is seen in "Lost in Time" when Hibernus and Libber refer to each other as "Ice" and "Lightning" and when Acronix refers to Kai and Nya (thinking they are Ray and Maya) as "Fire and Water".
  • Some of the elements wielded by Elemental Masters are also used by dragons. The First Spinjitzu Master was born with Oni and Dragon blood, and therefore, had both their respective powers (Destruction from the Oni, and Creation from the Dragons). When the First Spinjitzu Master created Ninjago, he empowered his sons with two of the strongest elements; his younger son, Wu, was gifted with Creation, and his older son, Garmadon, was granted Destruction.[39]
  • When asked who would be the last Elemental Master standing in an attempt to wipe all of them out, Tommy Andreasen said it would be Ash or Mr. Pale, as "they are hard to nail."[40]
  • It would seem that when an Elemental Master dies while still in possession of their power, the element goes on to find a new host.[14][15][41]
  • According to Tommy Andreasen, they were toying around with a character named Rayne who would have been the Elemental Master of Water. In addition, they would have appeared in Season 4.[33] However, the idea was scratched "[m]ostly because there were other fun ideas and the idea was too ‘big’" and "It wasn’t needed."[42]
  • A number of Elemental Masters — Ash, Bolobo, Chamille, Gravis, Shade, Benton, Levi, Dusk, Sono, Leo, Morro, and Libber — use versions of face and/or torso prints from other LEGO themes or previous ninja suits.
  • During the first Serpentine War, Chen manipulated some of the Elemental Masters to fight for the Serpentine, such as Benton via Hypnobrai hypnosis.[43][44][45]
  • The previous group of Elemental Masters consists of both the parents and grandparents of the current Elemental Masters. This is because one can be a parent at fewer than 20 years old and a grandparent at fewer than 40 years old.[46]
  • Elemental essence users like the First Spinjitzu Master, Garmadon, Wu, Lloyd, and the Overlord, are all either entirely or partly non-human.
    • Skylor, a human, nearly died attempting to use Garmadon's Destruction through her Amber. Objects imbued with a high enough amount of Golden Power/Creation are well known to be fatal to the touch of any mortal who attempts to hold them.
  • The original Elemental Masters were not ninja, nor were they trained in the ninja arts, but rather, they were warriors.[47]
  • When asked what the rest of the Elemental Masters were doing during the Overlord's and Preeminent's arrivals in Ninjago in the Nindroid crisis and ghost invasion respectively, Tommy Andreasen responded, "They were all playing a illegal poker tournament off shore. I think? Or at least that's kind of plausible."[48]
  • Elemental Masters' bodies are probably stronger and more durable than normal humans.[49]
  • When asked on how many Elemental Masters were present in other realms, Chris "Doc" Wyatt replied with “There were not equal numbers in all realms. Yes, none in some realms. Don't ask me which, but do stay tuned.“[50]
    • He later elaborated by saying there were no Elemental Masters originating from Djinjago.[51]
  • When asked if there could be a Elemental Master of Intangibility, Chris "Doc" Wyatt replied "Intangibility never occurred to us. Let me think about it."[52]
  • Currently, all the known realms that occupied Elemental Masters before the Merge are Ninjago, the Underworld, Imperium, the Wyldness, the First Land,[53] and Mysterium.[51]
    • After the Merge, inhabitants of other realms gained Elemental Powers, although it is unknown if Treg, Ellie, and Henjamin already had their powers or come from other realms with humans.
  • All Elemental Masters introduced in Dragons Rising, Season 2 who were not named in the show (except the past tournament champions, who weren't featured in a script[54]) - Algu, Arccrack, Ellie, Gorge, Henjamin, Mord, Teelk, Treg, and Zarkar - had their names revealed by Chris "Doc" Wyatt on X or Bluesky.[55][56][57][58][59]
    • Wyatt has also provided information about some of the previous Elemental Masters and their relation to those introduced in Dragons Rising, stating that either Bolobo or Shade is dead,[60] Obscuria is Shade's daughter,[58] and Ash and Cinder are related.[61]
  • According to Chris "Doc" Wyatt, Formlings could be Elemental Masters.[62]
  • Chris "Doc" Wyatt considers Wu and Garmadon to be Elemental Masters.[63]
  • Morro, Lloyd, and Wyldfyre are the only Elemental Masters to have been seen using their elemental powers when they were still children.
