The Legend Beasts are animals in Chima who chose not to drink the Chi water and evolve, thus leaving them pure. They have an implied connection to Mount Cavora.

Long ago, the Legend Beasts coexisted with other primitive animals in Chima. When the Great Illumination occurred, Mount Cavora rose from the land as Chi began to flow, attracting numerous creatures that drank from its waters. This transformed them, granting them heightened intelligence, complexity, and evolution. Yet, not all creatures embraced this change; some recognized the value of inner strength and Chi that resides within every being. As a result, these creatures chose to retreat into the Outlands, and became known as the Legend Beasts. Despite their departure, it was foretold that they would one day return to aid Chima in its time of greatest need.^[1]^[2]

Legends of Chima, Season 1[]

During the Attack on the Lion Temple, Laval fought Cragger at the Forever Rock. Cragger, influenced by Crooler's Persuader Plant, hurled Laval into the water, where he lost consciousness and began to drown. Fortunately, the Lion Legend Beast emerged from the Outlands, rescued Laval, and brought him back to shore. Rejoining the battle at the Lion Temple, Laval rode the Legend Beast into the fray, surprising everyone. Cragger, dismissing the Legend Beast's significance, tried to attack it using Chi, but the beast easily swatted him away, sending him crashing into the temple wall. Laval then harnessed Chi to defeat Cragger, compelling the Rebel Tribes to retreat. After the conflict, the Lion Legend Beast returned to the Outlands.^[1]

Later on, Laval faced the fallout from his decision to throw the Crocodiles' Chi into the Gorge of Eternal Depth. After being rescued by Eris, he journeyed to the border of Chima and the Outlands, believing the Lion Legend Beast might help them as Chima faced new dangers. However, the Lion Legend Beast chose not to intervene this time. Instead, Laval was saved by the Lion and Eagle Tribes from the Crocodiles. After the battle, Laval spotted the Lion Legend Beast in the fog and pondered whether its absence was due to his need to confront Cragger alone or his actions with the Croc Tribe's Chi.^[3] Laval discarding the Chi had unintended consequences, as it transformed the cave creatures living in the gorge into the Crawlers, who then kidnapped Crominus most of the Legend Beasts and planned to steal all the Chi from Chima. Crunket managed to escape, unconscious and lying on the Crocodile Legend Beast as it made its way toward Chima.^[4]

The Crawlers invaded Mount Cavora, but the tribes united to drive them out, only to find that the waterfalls had stopped flowing due to the Crawlers' interference. Unaware of the true cause of the falls stopping, Cragger accused Laval and the lions of destroying their power source, while Laval tried to convince everyone that there was still hope. As the situation deteriorated, Lagravis recalled the Great Story, realizing it was coming to fruition.^[5] However, with most Legend Beasts captured, they could not respond. When Cragger and the Rebel Tribes attacked Lion City again, Laval set off with ShadoWind to find a Legend Beast, hoping to end the war. Learning of Laval's plan, Lagravis and the others distracted the Rebel Tribes, allowing Laval to return with a Legend Beast, which Lagravis expected would be the Lion Legend Beast. However, upon arriving in the Outlands, Laval found the Crocodile Legend Beast ensnared in a web at the border instead, unable to reach Chima. After freeing the beast, Laval discovered Queen Crunket unconscious on its back. The Crocodile Legend Beast then transported Laval and Queen Crunket back to Chima, where she revealed the capture of the remaining Legend Beasts, prompting the Tribes of Chima to send Laval and his friends on a quest to rescue them.^[6]

Legends of Chima, Season 3[]

Laval, Cragger and Eris saw the Legend Beasts, now without their armour, in the Phoenix Temple upon ascending the frozen Chi falls. They lifted the three heroes using their Fire Roar to meet King Fluminox.

The Legend Beasts served as the final test for Cragger and Laval to prove that their Tribes were worthy of Fire Chi, using their Fire Roar to test the two heroes' strength and their shields. Their shields collected the combined Fire Roars and were used to prove their Tribes' worthiness.

King Fluminox gifted the Legend Beasts back to their respective Tribes, now outfitted with Phoenix Armour and tasked with protecting their Tribes' homes with their Fire Roar.

The Rhino, Raven and Bear Legend Beasts didn't receive any sets.
In the Rise of the Phoenix story "A Tooth for a Tooth" and the LEGO.com description for Glacior, a Giant Saber-Tooth Tiger came across Sir Fangar. The Giant Saber-Tooth bestowed one of its massive fangs to Fangar in exchange for one of his own fangs, in which Fangar viewed to use the tooth to bring his tribe to glory and leadership to all of Chima. He would later forge the fang into his personal weapon Glacior. Later, the Giant Saber-Tooth lost its other fang in the ice in an unknown incident, prompting Fangar to set a bounty on the missing fang.
In Bearing the Cold, a mythical ruthless Legend Beast named Ice Storm was mentioned in Ice Bear lore, Ice Storm is the Legend Beast of the tribe and the only one to naturally wield the innate power of Ice. Revered in the legends of Iceklaw, Ice Storm is a powerful Ice Bear with the ability to summon blizzards from its breath alone, completely engulfing the area in a massive tundra and overwhelming any enemies. Approaching its terrified opponents on its hind legs, Ice Storm would proceed to lay waste to any foolish enough to remain standing against him, with his fearsome tactics providing the groundwork for the Ice Bears' strategies. The Ice Bears later went under the flag of Ice Storm when they re-awakened.
If the Giant Saber-Tooth Tiger and Ice Storm are real, this would mean that there were previous Great Illuminations, or other methods for the anthropomorphism of the ancient tribes, in which those Legend Beasts were not involved with.
Beaver, Peacock, Fox, and Skunk Legend Beasts do not exist.^[7]
