A Painful Promise is the sixth episode of the fifteenth season of Ninjago and the 186th episode overall. It aired on May 20, 2022 on LEGO's YouTube channel.

Synopsis

Synopsis[]

The Ninja ward off the New Ninja to buy time while Aspheera returns Nya to human form, and a new villain plots trouble for Ninjago.[1]

Extended: Master Wu prevents Aspheera from leaving by agreeing to a series of trials, but the Ninjas return just in time with Aspheera's staff. When the police arrive, the Ninjas battle the New Ninjas to buy Aspheera time to drain Nya of her elemental powers. Nya's humanity is restored, but as Aspheera escapes in the chaos, she receives an invitation to the Council of the Crystal King - and the Ninjas are arrested.[2]

LEGO's YouTube channel: While the Ninja are late in returning the magic staff, Master Wu must keep an impatient Aspheera busy with a series of contests. Later, when the Ninja arrive with the staff, they have a new problem. Aspheera is having second thoughts and the New Ninja infiltrate the Ninja Cave!

Plot

At the hangar bay, Skylor was struggling to keep Nya frozen intact. P.I.X.A.L. informed Wu that the ninja collected Aspheera's staff and were on their way back, so they needed to stall Aspheera before she got bored. Meanwhile, Aspheera was looking around and after pressing a few buttons, she found the Golden Weapons. She tried to take them, but Wu got in his way. Aspheera was bored that she couldn't do anything and tried to leave, but Wu prevented her from doing so. Aspheera promised she wouldn't leave if she could challenge Wu in a series of contests. Despite it sounding silly, Wu accepted participating in the contests, in order to stall Aspheera long enough for the ninja to return.

Aspheera and Wu lifted weights, arm wrestled, played pool, did a staring contest, and flipped pancakes with Aspheera winning all of the contests. After competing with Aspheera, Wu returned to the hangar bay only to see Skylor's powers run out and the coolers to blow up. Luckily, Zane arrived just in time to freeze her. Lloyd then gave the staff to Aspheera, but instead of using it on Nya, she started to attack the ninja.

The ninja dodged Aspheera's attacks with Lloyd wondering how she could betray the ninja so quickly and Wu proceeded to scold them for going against his warnings of trusting her. While they are fighting, the police arrived at the monastery and Aspheera believed they were after her. However, Zane confessed that when they were trying to retrieve her staff, Kai accidentally said his name out loud, which revealed their identities in turn, and that the police were after them instead. Aspheera freaked out believing they would all go to prison, but Lloyd revealed a secret tunnel out of the hangar bay. Aspheera demanded access to the tunnel, but Lloyd would only show her if she saved Nya first. Aspheera bitterly agreed and began taking Nya's powers.

While the ninja watched, the New Ninja entered the hangar bay. The ninja saw them and after a verbal argument began fighting them to give Aspheera more time. Meanwhile, Aspheera commented about how powerful Nya was and not knowing the consequences of draining her powers. Just as she finished her sentence, a shockwave swept from Nya causing everyone to be knocked out while cutting off all power in Ninjago City.

Nya was back in her human form and Jay ran over to see if she was alright and were ecstatic to find Nya is back to normal. At the same time, Lloyd stayed true to his word and escorted Aspheera to the secret tunnel, allowing her to escape, much to her surprise. Lloyd then turned himself in with the rest of the ninja as they were happy to see Nya back.

After Aspheera left the hangar bay, she returned to the pyramid making origami snakes. Soon, she was greeted by three crystal spiders with a hologram being projected by one of the spiders. The Kabuki Mask asked if she was interested in joining the Council of the Crystal King to exact revenge, to which she happily accepted.

  • Narrator: Wu
  • This episode includes a pancake-flipping contest, first mentioned on Reddit by a WildBrain animator.[4]
    • According to the same animator, they had animated a water balloon toss between Wu and Aspheera, but it was cut for unknown reasons.[5][6]

Cultural references[]

  • Aspheera's line "You're actually keeping your word? Will wonders never cease?" is likely a reference to General Hux's line from Star Wars: The Last Jedi "He told us the truth. Will wonders never cease?"

Continuity[]

  • This episode marks the first appearance of the Golden Weapons since "Endings".
  • When Aspheera betrays the ninja and shoots a blast of energy at Wu, Zane saves him by pushing him to the side, while he manages to save himself too. This is a reference to the same situation in "Vengeance is Mine!" where Zane failed to save Wu from Aspheera's blast and was banished to the Never-Realm.
  • This episode marks the first time Nya is seen in her human form in present-time since "Nyad".

Errors[]

  • Wu's cape is missing after Zane tells him Kai revealed their identities after he yelled his name out loud.
  • At around 1 minute and 23 seconds, when Aspheera is patting the top of her origami snake, the lower segment slightly clips through it.
  • When the Golden Weapons are first shown, The Scythe of Quakes' blade is seperated from its handle and hilt. It returns to normal in the next scene.
  • At around 8 minutes and 11 seconds, when Lloyd picks Aspheera up from the blast and is questioned by her, Lloyd’s “line” is delayed about 2–3 seconds after his mouth moves.
