Overview

This article is about the martial art. For the game, see Airjitzu Flyers.
“A lost martial art created by Sensei Yang, who passed years ago. If mastered, it allows one to temporarily take flight.”

Airjitzu (referred to as Cyclon-Do by Jay and Nya[1]) is a martial arts technique that was created by Master Kodokuna Yang. It involves the user tapping into their innate energies while spinning rapidly, creating a tornado-like vortex of energy around themselves which also allows them to levitate over land. It is similar to Spinjitzu, which Yang used as inspiration to create the air-based technique.

Airjitzu grants the user the ability to fly in a small vortex of a specific element and color around themselves in the form of a single, short burst for under ten seconds.[2] After mastering it from the scroll, users simply use it to also levitate in the air or glide to places, sometimes longer than the usual amount. Airjitzu can also be used to counteract the strong winds from natural storms, but unable to take a direct hit from powerful Winds or mechs like the Iron Doom.

Trivia

Trivia[]

  • At first, all of the ninja's Airjitzu appeared to be blue whereas Morro appeared to have a green Airjitzu.
    • From "Curseworld, Part II" onwards, the color of the ninja's Airjitzu turned to their element's colors (save for Jay, whose Airjitzu was blue by default due to his element). This indicates that someone with an active elemental power will have an Airjitzu technique the same color as their element, as the ninja were without their powers in previous episodes.
      • Since Spinjitzu channels a person's Elemental Power and was used as inspiration for Airjitzu, the Airjitzu color being dependent on the element may be due to Airjitzu also channeling the user's element (if they have any).
    • In "Curseworld, Part I", Lloyd used Airjitzu for the first time. This is because when Morro was using his body, he also learned the technique even if he wasn't exactly in control due to his body being used as a host.
  • In "My Dinner With Nadakhan", Nya learns Airjitzu, which is a lighter shade of blue compared to the default.
    • Nya learned Airjitzu the fastest out of all the ninja, as she did it in a moment of panic.
  • Wrayth never uses Airjitzu in the TV series, despite him having a LEGO flyer.
  • Its name is a pun on "air" and "ninjutsu", a real type of martial art.
    • Jay's way of saying Airjitzu, "Cyclon-Do", is a portmanteau of "cyclone" and "taekwondo".[5]
      • Nya also calls it that in "Stop, Drop and Side Scroll", indicating that she likes the name.
      • Tommy Andreasen originally kept pitching the name, but no one else liked it, so the Hageman Brothers added it as a running joke.[6]
  • In "Day of the Departed", Cryptor claims to have learned Airjitzu from Zane's programming and seemingly uses it to fly to the tree branch Zane was on.
  • It was confirmed by the creators that Airjitzu would not be used starting with Sons of Garmadon. This was done for the purpose of preventing the ninja from being too overpowered.[7][8] Tommy Andreasen gave the analogy, "Sometimes you buy some piece of furniture which is too big. It seems like good idea at the time, but it didn't really fit the room. And now it just sits there getting in the way of something more useful and better. You gotta clean up and make way for new stuff or you're hoarding".[9]
    • A possible explanation for why the ninja stopped using it is given in the could-be-canonical novel Way of the Departed, where it's stated that Airjitzu draws on Edo magic, a dark form of Magic.
    • At one point, the Hageman Brothers joked that Airjitzu was erased by a Cloud Kingdom writer.[10]
    • According to Chris "Doc" Wyatt, the Ninja most likely cannot perform the technique anymore as "It's been a while since they focused on that in [their] training".[11]
    • In "Stop, Drop and Side Scroll", Nya acquires a power-up within Prime Empire that grants her the ability to use Airjitzu.
      • Milton Dyer appears to have heard of it when he was programming Prime Empire, which explains why it was in the game.
  • Though Wu does Airjitzu in the Dark Island Trilogy and refers to it as Airjitzu, Tommy Andreasen said that was actually Spinjitzu,[3] though he later said it was possible the ninja had taught him before the trilogy.[4]
  • Lloyd is technically the first ninja to learn Airjitzu.
  • In several promotional posters, Airjitzu looked like normal Spinjitzu, but with the ninja riding/staying atop the tornado instead of inside it.
  • Using Spinjitzu while jumping in the air is similar to performing Airjitzu, as seen with the ninja in "The Last Hope", and with Wu in "Curseworld, Part II".
