With the original team away, the young Ninja suffer a crisis of leadership. Before they can settle their internal struggle, residents of the Crossroads come to them for help. An Old Town crime boss is looking to expand his operation by winning the Mech Master 10,000, but can the Ninja stop bickering long enough to stop him?


Plot

Plot[]

While traveling in the Land Bounty on a bumpy, unscenic journey to the Never Kingdoms to destroy the Weapon of Desolation, Nya complains about the rough ride, though Lloyd reminds her that time is of the essence, and Zane assured them it was the fastest route. Nya offers everyone some of Mr. Frohicky's swamp tarts, but Kai and Cole point out that Mr. Frohicky pulled them from a dusty box at the bottom of his pantry, making them so stale that they are better suited for target practice. Jay gleefully uses his Lightning powers to blast one of the tarts out of the air. Observing the moment, Lloyd reflects on how good it feels to laugh together despite saving the world, hoping the new ninja team back in Ninjago City is having just as good a time.

In Ninjago City, the young ninja cling to a speeding hover car while pursuing henchmen who had stole experimental nitro fuel. Wyldfyre criticizes Arin's chaotic strategy while Sora coordinates with Riyu to force the hover cars to the ground. Frak realizes the thieves are using the stolen nitro fuel in their blasters, which is highly unstable and dangerous. When the henchmen open fire, Euphrasia attempts to use her unstable Wind powers to save Arin, Frak, and Wyldfyre as they fall, though her powers fail shortly after. Arin catches a falling Euphrasia with his Grapple Gun, while Wyldfyre lands on top of one of the hover cars, and Frak lands on Riyu's back alongside Sora. Realizing that a crash is imminent, the group splits up to handle the aftermath. Euphrasia moves to evacuate nearby civilians, Wyldfyre takes charge of the approaching vehicle, and Arin sets off to secure the nitro fuel after Sora requests his Grapple Gun. The chase concludes with Wyldfyre screaming as she crashes onto a roof calling out that she's okay, while Riyu crashes down with two of the hover cars.

In the Hangar bay, the young ninja watch a news video covering their recent mission. A interviewed citizen wonders when the original ninja are returning, while a harsh review from Intelligent George calls them "sad imitations" of the original team. Sora notes that at least the media didn't mention the thief who escaped with the dangerous fuel, while Arin points out that the two captured thieves aren't talking to the police. Bickering quickly arises over who had the better plan and why the group failed to function as a cohesive unit during the chase. Wyldfyre points out that the team lacks a leader in Lloyd's absence and immediately volunteers herself for the role, threatening to fight dirty against anyone who challenges her. Sora agrees that the team desperately needs a leader, but shuts down Wyldfyre's self-declaration by proposing that they hold a fair vote to decide who should lead. As the young ninja ride the elevator to the Relaxation Room, where Sora plans to make voting ballots, they encounter Kreel and Lobbo. Kreel explains that Mr. Frohicky let them in after seeing the new ninja's blundered chase on the news, while she and Lobbo ask the ninja to enter the Mech-Master 10,000 tournament, an all-vehicle race spanning into Ninjago City, to save the Crossroads from being bulldozed by an old town crime boss. Kreel admits she foolishly gambled all her property on the race after losing a few games of pool to him. When Euphrasia questions why Kreel can't use her own fast racers, Kreel explains that the crime boss obtained illegal experimental fuel, making his vehicles unbeatable. Arin realizes that the henchmen they fought earlier were working for this crime boss and escaped with that sole canister of fuel. Kreel identifies the villain as William Yards, causing the young ninja to burst out laughing in disbelief since he is known as the friendly guy on pool table billboards. Lobbo warns that behind his grinning exterior lies a "heart of molten lava," and Kreel admits he is an untouchable organized crime boss who covers his tracks, leaving the young ninja as the Crossroads' only hope.

Crime boss, William Yards, uses his business, William Yards Pool and Billiards, as a front while scheming to win the "Mech-Master 10,000" race. His goal is to destroy the Crossroads and build a massive parking lot for his billiard center. Yards' henchmen steal illegal Nitro Fuel to guarantee their victory. Despite encountering some of the ninja, the henchmen successfully deliver the fuel to Yards.

While preparing for the race, Arin focuses on offensive speed, route mapping, straightaways, and choke points. Sora counters that speed alone won't win against Yards' illegal enhancements, insisting they play defense to counter his sabotage. Wyldfyre uses Kai's Prototype X-1 for the event, warning Riyu not to scratch the paint. Since dragons are banned from competing, she assigns Riyu to act as their aerial scout "eyes in the sky". Euphrasia questions Frak's driving abilities, only to discover Frak has no real solo road-driving experience, having only driven vehicles attached to other moving crafts. The henchmen inject the illegal nitro fuel into a small car just before the countdown finishes and the race begins. Riyu catches Lobbo's mech when it gets knocked off course and places it safely back on the track. Frak and Euphrasia's vehicle drifts out of control, crashing into and ramming away other racers. As the racers head across a bridge into Ninjago City toward a sharp curve, Sora orders the deployment of defensive bumpers to hold off Yards' gaining men despite Arin's warning about the tight turn. Deploying the bumpers slows down Sora's mech, causing her to lose control during the sharp turn and crash into the walls, giving Arin a moment to say "I told you so". Wyldfyre uses a turbo boost on Kai's Prototype X-1, transforming it into a motorbike to overtake the henchmen and her teammates. As Frak and Euphrasia hurtle toward a fallen mech, Euphrasia activates a boost button that flips their vehicle into a backflip over the obstacle. Sora's mech gets stuck between two opposing mechs. Arin triggers the bumpers to break free, allowing them to overtake the double mechs and fight them off. Arin urges Sora to push ahead and focus solely on winning, but Sora insists on staying back to hit the henchmen before they play dirty. Taking advantage, the henchmen trigger their stolen nitro fuel, rapidly overtaking Sora, slamming her mech aside, and crossing the finish line to win. Wyldfyre, Frak, and Euphrasia reach the end only to see the henchmen claiming the trophy, leaving Kreel in disbelief, and Arin and Sora nowhere to be found...

Following their loss, Arin and Sora regain consciousness, tied with two triangle racks to chairs in a dimly lit storehouse under a single lightbulb. As they attempt to untie themselves, both take responsibility for the defeat. Sora admits she should have listened to Arin's advice to focus on speed and straightaways. Arin counters that Sora was right about needing defense against dirty tactics. Recognizing that failing to work together was their true downfall, they promise to always listen to each other going forward. A blinding light shines as William "Billy" Yards enters. Arin pokes fun at the irony of a pool store owner named "Billiards". Yards reveals his dad thought the name was funny and brags that his father will find it even funnier when his new Crossroads apartment gets turned into a parking lot. Sora and Arin threaten to overturn the race win by exposing his use of illegal fuel, but Yards dismisses the threat, stating they won't live long enough to provide proof. Yards insults them by stating he expected to face "one of the good ninja like Kai or Zane", which Arin finds hurtful. Yards knocks a billiard ball and hits a button, opening up the floor to reveal a deep pool filled with Ripper Sharks. When Arin mocks the "pool sharks" pun, Yards declares that he "commits to the bit" before aiming his staff at them to force their doom.

Henchmen stand outside William Yards Pool and Billiards, idly complaining about smelly sweat suits and dry cleaners. Wyldfyre checks with Riyu to confirm this is where the henchmen went, eager to attack them directly. Frak argues for a stealthy ninja approach, while Euphrasia naively suggests simply trying to reason with Mr. Yards nicely. Wyldfyre dismisses both suggestions and claims Egalt called her "leader material". She accuses Euphrasia and Frak of bad judgment because of their crushes on Arin and Sora, calling out Euphrasia for having heart-eyes around Arin and mocking Frak for getting flustered around Sora. Both awkardly deny her claims as Euphrasia deflects the argument by spotting an open window. They decide to use it to sneak inside, with Frak calling out "Ninja, go!", while Wyldfyre mutters "Pathetic.".

As Arin and Sora stall while tied over the shark pit, Riyu grabs a second-floor henchman through an open window. Euphrasia, Frak, and Wyldfyre enter in while Riyu flies through a roof opening, diving to catch Arin and Sora mid-air just as they jump. Riyu lands safely and breaks the ropes binding Arin and Sora. Arin performs Spinjitzu to take down oncoming henchmen. Wyldfyre and Euphrasia drop down onto two henchmen while Arin and Sora warn each other of approaching threats. Frak knocks out two henchmen, and Riyu chases off another after shaking one off his back. Yards attempts to flee toward the exit, but Wyldfyre cuts him off for a "leader on leader showdown". Yards backs onto a plank over the shark pit. When he tries to attack, Wyldfyre punches and kicks him to the end of the plank. Wyldfyre jumps on the plank to fling Yards upward. Arin uses Object Spinjitzu to hit the floor button, closing the shark pit just in time for Yards to crash onto the solid floor. Sora pins him down with a heavy rack. Yards gloats that they still have no proof he cheated in the race, claiming it is just his word against theirs. Frak reveals a paper he found during the brawl—a document detailing Yards' secret criminal history. Frak quips that his pool business is "going to scratch," leading Yards to reluctantly compliment the solid wordplay.

Back at the Monastery of Spinjitzu courtyard, the young ninja count their leadership votes. Sora tallies one vote for Arin, one for herself, and four for Wyldfyre, crowning Wyldfyre as their official new leader. Percival arrives with Mr. Frohicky to request the ninja's aid with the Summit of the Merged Lands. He explains that after Beatrix's failed takeover of Imperium, he organized the summit to unify the lands, but needs help hunting down hiding Loyalists who threaten peace. Sora's parents eavesdrop on the conversation before being interrupted by Barry and Jenny, who invite them to a "Ninja Parent Support Group" meeting over a cheese plate. Arin confirms to Barry and Jenny that Yards' cheating was proven, he is on trial, and the Crossroads are safe. Sora's parents express pride in her heroic actions to save the community, with her mother notably addressing her by her chosen name, "Sora," rather than "Ana". Overwhelmed by emotion, Sora flees to a wall in tears while Jenny holds Arin back from following her. At the Loyalists' hideout, the remaining Loyalists power up a mysterious machine using wires connected to General Cryptor as he wakes up.
