Plot

Plot[]

In the Crossroads, Jay and Nya catch up with Jay's adoptive parents, Ed and Edna, who revealed they had converted their old junkyard; Ed & Edna's Scrap N Junk, into a mech repair franchise; Ed & Edna's Mechs N Motors, despite not knowing a thing about it or them, even referring an old memory of Jay trying to build robots out of car parts. While Ed looks for something, Edna tells Nya how she never gave up on Jay finding them after the Merge before Ed shows him an item that was left alongside him when he was dropped off at their junkyard as a baby. Suddenly, Jay's reunion with Ed and Edna is abruptly cut short by a transmission he and Nya receive from Lloyd.

Regrouping with the other ninja, including Euphrasia, in Ninjago City, they come across many puppets, all maneuvered by Dorama, with Jay commenting on how this harkens back to old times, until Cole and Wyldfyre argue how unstable their Elemental Powers are without Lloyd present... until the team's Elemental Powers of Heat, Fire, Ice, Earth, Water, Quake, Lightning, and Wind are suddenly rekindled, as Lloyd arrives onto the scene, with Arin and Sora in tow using Spinjitzu. As Lloyd shouts out, "Ninja go!", and the fully reunited team lunge into action, Lloyd asks off subject what type of pie Arin would bake for their dinner tonight, to which Arin replies with uncertainty before throwing some teasing remarks on how picky the ninja are for deserts. Thinking Arin was addressing this to her, Nya protests, referencing how she's eaten Cragling mud before until Sora explains that it's her he's referring to due to a previous recipe she's already tried. Hearing this, Frak becomes offended since he taught Arin that delicious recipe, but this only disappoints Cole, since he prefers cake over pie. As a puppet abruptly ambushes the both of them and pins them to the side of a nearby building, thanks to Lloyd stabilizing Elemental Powers, Cole momentarily assumes his empowered Elemental Golem form to lift up some wreckage holding them so Frak could take the puppet down, revealing that he actually tried to bake a cake once that would make Sora's pies seem "almost edible", to her annoyance. With four of the marionettes down, Euphrasia lifts one of the destroyed puppets' heads with her Wind powers and states that she could get the ninja the "greatest" cake and pie recipes in the Merged Lands since the Cloud Kingdom is revealed to have all of that stuff. Zane then questions her if this is true, since the Writers of Destiny spend all their time inscribing what they believe to be the fate of all the realms' destinies. As Zane and Euphrasia continue to chat, with the former knocking another marionette's head into the sky using Spinjitzu, Wyldfyre and Kai seem engaged in a competition centered on who can obliterate a marionette the most using their Fire and Heat powers respectively. With five of the puppets now destroyed, Riyu takes down the sixth one by using force, brutality, and Spinjitzu. Dealing with the seventh one, Nya reprimands Jay for getting distracted by some noodles on a nearby stand, clarifying his actions by stating how he or Nya didn't get to eat with Ed and Edna in order to meet up with the others, before throwing his chopsticks at the puppet's knee, immobilizing it for Wyldfyre to destroy, retrieving his chopsticks in the process (albeit; alit by Wyldfyre's Heat blast until he uses it to heat up his noodles). Down to the puppet commandeered by Dorama, upon seeing the marionette deflect his Life energy blasts, Lloyd (albeit; reluctantly) transforms into his Draconus Form to "even" the odds, with Kai catching up to transform into his own Draconus Form as well. Teaming up, in record timing, the Elemental Masters of Fire and Life effortlessly outmaneuvre and destroy the puppet with ease, while Wyldfyre personally arrests Dorama. Intelligent George reports the aftermath, praising the ninja before going on to state that with crime down, Ninjago City has been picked to host the upcoming Summit of the Merged Lands.

Back at the Monastery of Spinjitzu, Mr. Frohicky sets up a table in the courtyard as the ninja return with Kai heading inside to rest. Arin, Sora, and Frak walk across the hallway before Sora makes the boys duck into the living room to avoid her parents, who are talking to Barry and Jenny, and are caught by Jay and Cole, but the three claim it is just a small meeting before leaving while Jay and Cole head down to the hangar bay, where they play a video game until Kai comes up to join in, and one misstep from Cole attempts a fancy move (performing an uppercut to slice 4 cubes), he loses his balance. The stumble causes Kai and Jay to fall, leading Jay to accidentally fire a blast of lightning at Kai that knocks over the Weapon of Desolation's containment unit. The falling containment unit deactivates, causing the unstable Weapon of Desolation to activate on their own. As Cole and Kai watch in shock, the activating weapon summons the Mutation Monster, causing Kai to yelp in alarm.

In the courtyard, The young ninja are working together to clean up leaves. A messenger dragon arrives flying toward Wyldfyre with a letter attached. Wyldfyre grabs the note and frees the dragon, joking that it probably isn't a love note from Roby. Euphrasia starts asking if Wyldfyre has a boyfriend, but Frak cuts her off, warning her not to get Wyldfyre started or things will turn "mushy". Wyldfyre opens the note and reveals it contains strange news from Roby: the Monastery of the Gates has gone missing. Arin, Euphrasia, Frak, and Sora react in disbelief, with Frak questioning how an entire building could simply disappear.

As the Mutation Monster attacks Cole, Jay, and Kai, the trio bicker over who caused the mess. Jay blames Kai, Kai blames Jay's lightning blast, and Cole reminds them both that all three share the blame. Jay uses his lightning to drop rock debris from the ceiling onto the monster, but it only acts as a mild annoyance. Kai suggests using "Dragon Form," but Jay points out they can only do so with Lloyd—and asking Lloyd would expose that they broke the Weapon of Desolation right after lecturing the trainees about responsibility. Kai agrees they must destroy the monster secretly without Lloyd or the trainees finding out. Jay devises a plan, leading Cole to seek help from Zane in the Relaxation Room, where Zane is painting a portrait of P.I.X.A.L. Sensing trouble, Zane immediately suspects he won't like whatever they need him for.

In Master Wu's library, Lloyd is trying to study scrolls when Zane sets up an easel to paint his portrait. Despite Lloyd's initial reluctance, Zane insists that he has been struck by sudden artistic inspiration and must paint him immediately. Zane guides Lloyd into various poses and then asks him to "dragon up". When a confused Lloyd questions the request, Zane claims it is vital to his artistic vision that Lloyd be depicted with the noble visage of a dragon. Though still feeling drained, Lloyd complies and transforms into Draconus Form. Because of Lloyd's transformation, Zane, Jay, Kai, and Cole simultaneously transform as well. Satisfied that the transformation worked, Zane remarks that his "artistic vision may now commence," successfully allowing the other ninja to gain the power needed to fight the Mutation Monster in secret.

Kai, Cole, and Jay fly back to the Hangar Bay only to discover that the Mutation Monster has escaped. Realizing the creature could be anywhere, the trio panics briefly before Jay proposes splitting up to find and eliminate the monster before it attacks anyone. Kai searches in the Dragon Stables and hides inside an apple barrel when Alfonzo Frohicky enters. Cole searches in the Mountains of Impossible Height and uses his earth power to create a rock cover when he spots Sora's parents. Jay searches outside the Monastery of Spinjitzu, hiding behind Riyu when he spots Arin and Sora, much to Riyu's grumbling annoyance.

During a family dinner, Arin brings in five pies while the team wonders where Cole, Jay, and Kai are. Zane dryly remarks that they are probably off "being totally and completely responsible." As Lloyd stands up to deliver an inspiring speech about Master Wu's belief that "Family is key," a sudden, massive stomp interrupts him. The Mutation Monster appears, grows larger, and attacks the monastery. Arin helps evacuate his parents while Sora uses Spinjitzu to save her own parents from the creature. Lloyd, Nya, Zane, and Riyu engage the monster in combat, but it blocks their elemental attacks. Arin rushes to the hangar bay to retrieve the Weapon of Desolation. Returning just as Cole, Jay, and Kai join the fray, Arin uses the final word "Tangauv-Hab" to activate the weapon, causing it to emit an energy wave that sucks the Mutation Monster back inside. Lloyd praises Arin for saving everyone. However, Arin notes that while he is the only ninja who can safely handle the weapon, it doesn't explain why its containment unit was busted open in the first place. Spotting Cole, Jay, and Kai in their Draconus Forms, Lloyd realizes they were responsible for breaking the unit, prompting Kai to play innocent.

Lloyd reprimands Jay, Kai, Cole, and Zane for their irresponsibility. Kai defends their actions by saying they were just hanging out like old times, but Lloyd reminds them that they are mentors now and must act like it. Zane agrees, calling their behavior "regressive," but Lloyd points out that Zane was an accomplice under the guise of "artistic vision," causing Zane to sigh. Nya interjects, pointing out that although they were being boneheaded, the situation was inevitable given the presence of the Weapon of Desolation, highlighting the irony of keeping such a dangerous weapon in a monastery mostly populated by Elemental Masters. Zane then recalls how the weapon was disposed of by being split into two halves and hidden within trees scattered across the realms. Jay quickly counters this by reminding everyone that even that measure failed to eliminate the threat, as the moment half of the Source Dragons withdrew their Source Energy from the Merged Lands, the weapon's fragments managed to summon the Elemental Masters regardless. Nya concludes that they must destroy it. Although Lloyd notes that the weapon is believed to be indestructible, Zane suggests there may be a place somewhere in the Merged Lands to properly dispose of it that they haven't explored yet. Frak interjects, realizing he knows someone who might have explored enough to help.

At the Explorer's Club, Cecil Putnam initially denied them, stating the building is for Explorers Club members only. Frak steps in using a family pass as the son of a member, Reginald, gaining them entry alongside Reginald. Frak explains to his father that they need information. Reginald directs them to The Abyss of Eternal Night in the Never Kingdoms, formerly the Never Realm, a location where anything thrown in never returns. He recounts a legend about a king who ignored his son's warning and lost half his army to the abyss. When Lloyd decides they should go there, Reginald warns them that entering the Never Kingdoms isn't simple. Since the Merge, an invisible barrier blocks anyone who has not visited the realm prior to the Merge, though those who were there before can pass through and return freely.

In the Hangar bay, Lloyd explains that because the original ninja visited the Never Realm before The Merge, they are the only ones who can cross the barrier to destroy the Weapon of Desolation. Kai asks Wyldfyre to stay behind to protect Ninjago, which she dramatically accepts. Nya states that since the the portal gates was shut down, they will travel in the new Land Bounty built by P.I.X.A.L. When Arin points out that no elemental master can touch the weapon safely, Lloyd clarifies they will transport and hurl the entire containment unit made by Sora into the abyss. Zane warns the young ninja staying behind that being near Lloyd was the only thing keeping their elemental powers stable, meaning their powers will go "wackadoo" once Lloyd departs. Lloyd encourages them to use this as an opportunity to train their skills without relying on powers. As the original ninja drive away in the Land Bounty, Nya expresses concern about leaving the trainees behind. Lloyd reflects on his trials in the Temple of the Green Ninja, noting that everyone needs their own experiences to grow, though Nya worries about threats that could stop their growth permanently.

Meanwhile, some Loyalists that evaded capture after the assault in Imperium, watch Intelligent George's broadcast of the original ninja's departure, allowing them to rebuild Cryptor, whose schematics they had just obtained from one of their insiders.

Trivia

Trivia[]

  • The episode title is an alliteration, with "Monster" and "Monastery" starting on the same letter, and also makes use of consonance and assonance.
  • The thumbnail for this episode on Tubi was the leaked image of Kai and Cole in their Draconus Forms in the Monastery of Spinjitzu. Jay had been cropped out of it.
  • This is the only appearance of Cole's empowered Golem Form in Part 2. He was able to access it thanks to Lloyd's close proximity without the need of the Weapon of Desolation.
  • Jay, Cole and Kai consult Zane for help, being an interaction mainly for the original four ninja.
  • This is the first time that the name of the first episode of a Ninjago: Dragons Rising part doesn’t begin with the word "The."
  • The Never Kingdoms' travelling rules is what makes the original ninja all go together on a mission together as a team for the first time since Season 15: Crystalized.
  • This episode marks the debut of the new Land Bounty.
    • It is unknown why the Ninja didn’t simply use the Temple Bounty to travel to the Never Kingdoms, given how Wyldfyre has the remote to call for it back from it's current location, the Spectral Lands.
  • Kai gets a full Draconus Form transformation sequence in this episode.
    • Additionally, he is the only one besides Lloyd to get a transformation sequence that covers up the whole screen, as Zane shares his sequence with Lloyd in "A Frozen Scar". He is also the only one to gets a full Draconus Form transformation sequence where there is ground beneath him.
  • In Reginald's room, there is a globe depicting the Merged Lands.
  • This is the only episode in Season 4 which Jiro appears, not having appeared since "Chaos Unchained".
  • When the original ninja tell the young ninja about their upcoming mission in the Never Kingdoms, Euphrasia is absent for unknown reasons.

Continuity[]

Errors[]

  • When Nya says, "Just waiting for you to say the thing.", Jay's half mask can be seen, shrunken down.
  • When Kai enters his Draconus Form and fights Dorama's purple puppet, he can be heard with Cole's cheering audio clip from "Day of the Great Devourer".
    • Interestingly enough, the audio clip is of Cole's original voice actor, Kirby Morrow instead of Andrew Francis.
    • That means this is the first time in Ninjago: Dragons Rising that Kirby Morrow's performance as Cole has been used, albeit erroneously, and the first time since Season 15: Crystalized.
  • When Lloyd transforms into his Draconus Form, along with the other ninja, after the transformation sequence, he's missing his shoulder pads.
  • When Cole and Jay send Arin, Sora and Frak outside to clean the courtyard, Sora can be seen walking in place just outside the doorway of the relaxation room.
  • Ed and Edna claim that they know nothing about building mechs. However, Ed did build a mech as shown in "Snakebit."
  • Zane noted that the Weapon of Desolation was split into two fragments and concealed within trees, suggesting that the ninja had become aware of its disposal. However, it's unknown why Zane did not mention the First Spinjitzu Master as the one responsible, as Cole discovered it was the First Spinjitzu Master and his spell from Dr. LaRow in "Dying to Live."
  • The Loyalists say their insider got Cryptor's blueprints, but his chest armour has been replaced with a shoulder pad.
    • This was to coincide with his minifigure in the latest remake of the X-1 Ninja Charger.
  • When Kai is in the dragon stables looking for the Mutation Monster, in the opening shot of the scene the barrel he later hides in has no apples, but when Kai goes into the barrel, apples randomly appear out of nowhere.
  • Loyalist 4 is not the listed in the credits.
