Djinns

Overview

“The djinn isn't a person. They were powerful and magical beings from the realm of Djinjago. They used to wield wish magic.”

Djinns were a race of mystical beings capable of wish magic and who hailed from the realm of Djinjago. Their kind were wiped out along with their home due to the destruction of its sister realm, the Cursed Realm, leaving Nadakhan and Arrakore as the last known djinns still alive.

History

History[]

Background[]

The djinns hail from the realm of Djinjago, the sister realm of the Cursed Realm. For a period of time, they would be periodically ruled by a royal line; however, one of their members, Nadakhan, eventually left the realm in pursuit of his own dreams.

Skybound[]

Nadakhan returned to his home realm with his crew, only to find it collapsing. Khanjikhan explained to his son of the state, revealing Djinjago's sister realm the Cursed Realm had been destroyed and now it too will follow. Khanjikhan bestowed upon his son the Djinn Blade before he told his son to avenge them, as he watched his son leave and dying with his people. This left Nadakhan as one of the only known living djinns in existence.

Nadakhan attempted to rebuild his lost home by using parts of Ninjago as a makeshift Djinjago but his efforts were foiled by the ninja.

As a result of Jay's wish to erase the events of the season, Nadakhan was left trapped forever and Khanjikhan would never have the chance to give the Djinn Blade to his son in the first place, resulting in the artifact's destruction and seemingly no chance of spreading the race's legacy.

Dragons Rising, Season 1[]

Arrakore is one of the few who survived the destruction of Djinjago. He managed to capture the only remaining piece of his realm and kept it in a necklace. However, his hope was restored by Sora and Nya, and the piece he had became bigger. He discovered that the stronger the wish magic is, the greater the potential for Djinjago to return to its original state and carry on the legacy of the djinn.

Dragons Rising, Season 3[]

Arrakore continued to grant wishes which allowed Djinjago to return and bigger than before. Rox and the Dragonians arrived to force him to fix the shatter Yellow Prismatic Blade. Arrakore refused to comply due to knowing the dangers of the blade. Arrakore manages to trick Rox into wishing the Ninja were here. However, he only summoned Nya, Sora, and Riyu. The fight ended with the Prismatic Blade being fix but Nya, Sora, and Riyu, drove Rox away but Sora and Nya learned about the Prismatic Blades and told the Ninja.

Later on Zanth, Sora, and Riyu returned to Djinjago with Wyldfyre and Frak who needed to awake the tan half of the Arc Dragon of Focus to fight Thunderfang, who Arrakore is familiar with. Arrakore manage to restore enough of Djinjago so the Cave of Bells is back but there is no tan half-dragon in it, which he explains that his wish magic isn't very strong enough to bring back living things like the Arc Dragon or his people.

When Arrakore sees Zanth's evolution state, he thinks with her new boost of Djinjagan magic and if the two work together, they might have enough power to grant the wish but it will take time and complete concentration, which means no distractions even loud noises that could destroy their focus and ruin the wish. Although Rapton and the Freebooters arrive to steal Arrakore's treasure, which Rapton escape stealing a rare Djinjagan unicorn figurine for his collection. Zanth and Arrakore were exhausted for bringing the tan half of the Arc Dragon, so they sleep as Kur and the Spectral Dragonians came to Djinjago to stop the Ninja.

Abilities and traits

Abilities and traits[]

Djinns are near-ethereal beings that are capable of flight and levitation, not unlike the inhabitants of their sister realm, Ghost Warriors. Djinns have the ability to move at incredibly fast speeds and teleport, making it nearly impossible to land a hit on one unless by tricking the djinn with a fakeout punch, then successfully landing a hit.[1] They also seem to have a great amount of longevity, as evidenced by Khanjikhan having lived since the end of the Stone Wars, although this may be contributed to his ability to grant wishes for himself. Likewise, djinns are able to shape-shift to a minor extent and even duplicate the abilities of those they impersonate, although this is possibly an ability exclusive to the royal line.

Additionally, djinns seem to be relatively immune to most poisons, as a djinn is able to survive against the venom of a Tiger Widow, which would normally kill a human with a single drop, while djinns are only exhausted by it. Though they have different appearances, djinns notably all have ethereal, ghost-like tails, orange or red skin, and black or gray hair, and four arms.

The most notable and iconic ability of a djinn, however, is their ability to grant wishes for others. Djinns are only able to grant three wishes per person and are unable to make others fall in love, to harm someone, create more wishes for a person, nor can they use a wish for themselves. However, a djinn and the wisher can use loopholes and wordplay to get around some of these rules through indirect actions. It seems it's up to the djinn if the wish works as intended as Nadakhan twists them in cruel ways while Arrakore grants them how the wisher wants.

It has been shown that one wish can cancel out the others. For example, Jay's final wish reversed the effects of all of the previous wishes he and his friends had made. In addition, the wish re-imprisoned Nadakhan in the Teapot of Tyrahn even though Soto had previously stated that wishing a djinn back into his teapot would be wishing harm upon someone. If Jay’s wish was granted even though it violated the rules of wish magic, it is because Nadakhan’s wish magic was freed from the restrictions imposed by djinn law when he got married.[2] The reason Nadakhan was obligated to grant Jay’s wish is that this restriction was imposed on him[3], but it is not part of the basic restrictions imposed by djinn law[2]. However, it's likely that individuals who made wishes in the alternate timeline, or at least those who made wishes and who remember it, could not make three more wishes even though the events were undone.[4]

The royal line of Djinn Kings are able to subvert most of these rules entirely, with a King gaining the ability to grant infinite wishes for himself upon marrying another on djinn land. Once the wedding ceremony is fulfilled, the Djinn King's wishes will manifest themselves in the form of blue energy spheres that are thrown at the intended target, depending on the manner and circumstance of the wish.[5]

Trivia

Trivia[]

  • Currently, the only known djinns are Nadakhan, Khanjikhan, Nadakhan's mother, and Arrakore.
    • There is however a depiction of an unknown djinn who possesses two arms in the book from the Library of Domu in "Public Enemy Number One." Whether this is actually a djinn is debatable, due to the lack of four arms.
  • Djinns are able to wish for whatever they want except for love, death, and more wishes.
  • Due to Djinn Kings' wishes, Nadakhan has revealed to the ninja that he sought for the ultimate gift, which was unlimited wishes.
  • Zane mentioned there was a way to destroy a djinn, though he was interrupted before he could finish elaborating, and the method was never brought up again.[6]
  • It's possible djinns may be able to grant wishes by implanting thoughts in others' minds, as suggested by Tommy Andreasen as a way Nadakhan fulfilled Jay's first wish in "Misfortune Rising."[7]
  • Djinns have aesthetically similar "tails" to those of the Ghost Warriors. This may be due to the fact that both hail from sister realms.
  • Although called "djinn" in the show, they resemble mythical genies more, as the word djinn is derived from an Arabic word meaning ghost, spirit and poltergeist, and it mostly means demons and devils. Djinns are mentioned under the name Jinn in the Quran, a religious text of Islam, as beings made of smokeless flames. Unlike Ninjago and mythical genies, Jinn are many different supernatural creatures, rather than one species. Different types of Jinn include Ghouls, Ifrits, and Iblis, the Islam counterpart of Satan.
  • A shapeshifted Nadakhan appeared to use Zane's ice power to freeze part of the Mega Monster Amusement Park roller coaster in "Infamous." Tommy Andreasen gave the explanation that it could be related to magic, which if true would mean djinn magic is able to imitate Elemental Powers.[8][9]
    • Chris "Doc" Wyatt confirmed that a non-elemental Djinjagan magical ability relates to changing the size of living things.[10] It's inferred that the ability works on non-living objects as well.
  • The Hageman Brothers have stated that Tox, the Elemental Master of Poison, could have the same effect on a djinn that Tiger Widow venom does.[11]
  • According to Tommy Andreasen and Chris "Doc" Wyatt, a djinn can bring someone back from the Departed Realm.[12][13]
    • When asked if Arrakore would bring back the djinns with his magic, Wyatt stated that he cannot disclose whether the revival of the djinns will actually occur or not.[14]
  • Djinns cannot grant wishes to other djinns.[15]
  • The exact way of referring to the species varies between characters and mediums.
    • The plural form of "djinn" is unclear. For example, Lloyd says both "djinn" and "djinns" in the same scene in "Public Enemy Number One."
    • The name "djinn" is not capitalized in The Book of Spinjitzu but is capitalized in the Dark Island Trilogy in Wu's journal. As The Book of Spinjitzu is more recent, the former way can presently be considered the correct usage.
  • In "The Way Back," Nadakhan creates two statues of past djinn kings, with one of them being of his father, Khanjikhan. It is possible that the other one was of his paternal grandfather, but it is not confirmed.
  • Djinns sometimes call humans "two-leggers" on the basis that humans have legs while they don't.
  • Djinn skin color has no effect on power.[3]
    • It is currently unknown if orange and red are the only skin colors of djinns or if they could have other skin colors that have not yet been revealed.
  • All djinns have the same hairstyle, a ponytail.
  • Djinns can be ticklish.
  • In The Lair of Tanabrax, it was mentioned that djinns have their own language, as Garmadon had lessons with his father about the djinns' language.
  • There are different levels of wish magic[16] depending on the connection a Djinn has with Djinjago and to wish magic.[3]
    • After the destruction of Djinjago, the laws designed to prevent the abuse of wish magic were abolished, which created a loophole for Arrakore's wish magic even though he cannot grant himself any wishes. This restriction can only be overcome by a djinn prince when he becomes king by marrying in his homeland.
      • Nadakhan did not take advantage of this loophole, likely because he did not reconstruct the real Djinjago from the remaining grain of sand by granting wishes.
  • Before the destruction of Djinjago, the wish magic of the djinns - including Arrakore - had restrictions imposed by a djinn law on not being able to grant wishes for love, harm, or additional wishes, so that wish magic would not be abused.[2][17]
  • According to Chris “Doc” Wyatt, whenever a djinn breaks djinn law, depending on what law they break, the consequences would be that their wish magic will be restricted.[17]
    • In addition to the restrictions imposed by djinn laws (a djinn cannot grant love, harm, or additional wishes),[2] Nadakhan is bound by the restriction that he must grant a wish whenever he hears it.[note 1]
      • The restriction on Nadakhan's wish magic which forces him to grant any wish he hears, is likely linked to the fact that he broke a djinn law, which led to his exile and caused him to be hated by his father and his people.[18]
  • A djinn with more direct access to Djinjago at the height of its majesty and to wish magic would be the most powerful wish magician.[3]

  1. In "The Way Back," during Nadakhan's wedding, Clancee asks Nya if she will free him from the restrictions of love, harm, and additional wishes imposed by Djinn law, implying that Nadakhan's obligation to grant the wishes he hears is a restriction unique to him. Furthermore, after becoming King, he was still bound by the obligation to grant wishes, such as when he was forced to listen to Clancee after the latter wished it, or when Jay made his final wish.
