Prismatic Blades

Overview

“According to this, if you look through a Prismatic Blade, it can reveal hidden souls around us. The blade was not forged in fire, but the resonance of soul energy.”

The Prismatic Blades (also known as the Prismatic Weapons) are swords made of Prismatic Steel, possessing unique abilities associated with soul energy. The first Prismatic Blade was crafted by Deg, who subsequently imparted the knowledge of their creation to the Order of the Sources. They are the sole means capable of cutting the chains that bound Thunderfang in his prison.

After Thunderfang's defeat, four of the five Prismatic Blades were lost, causing them to resurface in the Land of Lost Things. Meanwhile, the Returning Blade broke during an encounter with Spectral Dragonians in Mysterium, with its broken end being turned into a lantern by Sora and Gandalaria. During this time, Cole, Kai, and Frak took three of the four blades to Imperium where the Advanced Systems Lab sought to develop a new variant of the Prismatic Blades called the Reveal Blades, designed to destroy Spectral Dragonians. However, due to a shortage of Prismatic Steel, they ended up being enhancements of two of the original Prismatic Blades instead.

History

History[]

Background[]

Long ago, the first Prismatic Blade was forged by the Dragonian Deg, who then taught the talent of prismatic metallurgy to the Order of the Sources so they can forge four other blades following the Battle of the City of Temples and the entrapment of Thunderfang beneath the Storm Mountain. The five Prismatic Blade were the only keys able to cut the chains of the Shatter Dragon of Chaos, and were also imbued with the essence of soul energy, granting them unique abilities tied to this mystical force.[2] Over time, they were dispersed across various realms through mysterious circumstances. Lord Ras came into possession of one of the blade known as the Returning Blade, which he claimed as a trophy from battle.[3] The yellow Prismatic Blade was put on display in the Temple City Museum.[4] Meanwhile, the green Prismatic Blade was placed inside a crab tooth, endowing the crab monster with extraordinary powers.[5]

Dragons Rising, Season 2[]

The Sword Shatters[]

In the Tournament of the Sources, Roby had Lloyd and Zeatrix face off in a round known as the Gauntlet, where the goal was to select a close combat weapon and force the opponent off the platform with it. Among the available weapons was the yellow Prismatic Blade, which Lloyd recognized from a previous vision. As the match began, Lloyd searched for the yellow Prismatic Blade but was constantly thwarted by Zeatrix's interference. When the round resumed, Zeatrix managed to seize the yellow Prismatic Blade for herself. Lloyd opted for a hammer and, using Size, successfully knocked Zeatrix off the platform. However, Zeatrix retaliated by striking Lloyd with the yellow Prismatic Blade, which shattered upon impact.

Prior to Dragons Rising, Season 3[]

At some point, the Freebooters discovered the red Prismatic Blade, adding it to their collection of plundered treasures. Meanwhile, the blue Prismatic Blade was mysteriously placed inside Dorama's puppet, bringing it to life.

Dragons Rising, Season 3[]

The Missing[]

For several weeks, Dorama's puppet, now brought back to life by the power of the blue Prismatic Blade, began to terrorize a local village in the wastelands. Although many attempts were made in putting down the marionette, these efforts were all but futile, leaving little lasting effect beyond inflicting scars of battle. Word of the giant puppet's rampage would eventually reach the ears of Intelligent George, who covered it in one of his broadcasts, which Frak listened in to.

Some time later, Lloyd, Sora, Frak, Riyu, Zane, and Zanth journeyed to the wasteland village in search of Arin. There, they found themselves confronted by Dorama's puppet, which now possessed the ability to fire blasts of energy from its eyes. After a fierce battle, Frak spotted a strange glow emanating from within the puppet's head, discovering it to be from the blue Prismatic Blade. After removing the blade, the puppet once again returned to its lifeless state.

The Spectral Lands[]

As Arin prepared himself to enter the Spectral Lands, Ras halted him and revealed his possession of the "Returning Blade", which he then gave to Arin, insisting that he would need it when traversing through the Spectral Lands.

On his way to the Well of the Lost, Arin discovered that the blade had the ability to return to the user's hand when thrown, surmising that this property was how the weapon was christened with its namesake by Ras. When Arin ran into Morro, the ghost ninja told Arin that the material comprising the blade was Prismatic Steel. Arin would then use the weapon to see and ward off Soul Suckers throughout his journey in the Spectral Lands.

The Great Zane Robbery[]

Zane briefly passed by the Red Prismatic Blade when he infiltrated the Freebooters' train, but failed to notice it as his attention was focused on the techno-cocoon the Freebooters had recently acquired.

Later, Nokt and his Dragonian Warriors attacked the train in search of the blade, discovering it within the train's cargo hold. However, Zane and P.I.X.A.L. intervened, taking possession of the blade as they attempted to prevent Nokt from gaining possession of it. In spite of their best efforts however, Nokt ultimately managed to retake the blade and escaped.

Elsewhere at the algae farmers' village, the Dragonian Warriors attacked the locals as Rox located the Green Prismatic Blade. She dove into the water, grabbed the Crab tooth, and shattered it, revealing the blade. She held up it up and laughed.

I Alone Can Save Them[]

Frak continued to carry the Blue Prismatic Blade on his person as he, Lloyd, Sora, and Riyu continued their search for Arin. Eventually, the four encountered Zarkt, who was searching for the same Prismatic Blade. In the ensuing battle, Lloyd used the Blue Prismatic Blade in combat against Zarkt, successfully driving away the Master of Misfortune, who was forced to return empty-handed. While Zarkt was being chastised by Rox for his failure, Kur returned with the broken pieces of the Yellow Prismatic Blade and reported that the blade was like this when she found it. After examining the broken blade, Rox remarked that it would not be an issue; they could fix it with a little wish magic.

Fallen Wishes[]

Following their victory over Zarkt, Lloyd and his group continued to ponder over the purpose of the Blue Prismatic Blade. Meanwhile, Kai and Nya researched the blades, using The Sagas of the Eternal Sources to find their answers. Unknown to both groups however, Rox sought out Arrakore to repair the shattered yellow Prismatic Blade. When Arrakore refused, Rox ordered her platoon of Dragonians to subdue him, intending to entrap him within a Timepiece to subjugate and force him into granting her wish. Eventually, Rox managed to succeed in this goal and after a skirmish with Nya, Sora, and Riyu, she fled with the restored Prismatic Blade.

Their Draconic Majesty's Request[]

Returning to Thunderfang's prison with the restored Yellow Prismatic Blade, Rox used it to shatter the corresponding chain before discarding it. Meanwhile, after an unsuccessful attempt to destroy the Blue Prismatic Blade, P.I.X.A.L. and Zane worked to assemble and affix a tracker to it, hoping that the device could lead them to the final blade before the Forbidden Five.

Elsewhere, Arin used the Returning Blade in combat against a bounty hunter, infusing the weapon with Spinjitzu energy before hurling it to slice off the bounty hunter's glider pack. However, the mercenary deflected the blade.

Crashing Together[]

Using the blue Prismatic Blade's tracker, Zane discovered that Arin and Ras possessed the final Prismatic Blade. However, the mysterious mercenary arrived and kidnapped Ras and at the same time, Drix arrived as well to seize both blades. In spite of Nya's command for Lloyd to flee with the blue Prismatic Blade, he chose to confront Drix with it instead. In the ensuing battle, Drix gained the advantage and snatched the blade from Lloyd before attacking Ras and capturing the Returning Blade as well. Drix then briefly hoisted both blades in the air victoriously before flying off to Thunderfang's prison.

Chaos Unchained[]

Drix had both blades when he went to Thunderfang's prison. As Drix battles the Ninja, he loses the Blue Prismatic Blade and Riyu knocks the Returning Blade from him. Drix then notices Riyu taking the Blue Prismatic Blade and turns into a swarm of insects to harass him. After a prolonged battle, both blades ended up in the hands of Arin, who menacingly held them as he confronted Nokt, intending to use them in battle against the dark warrior. Unfortunately, Arin's monologuing gave Rox the opportunity to attack him from behind, relieving him of both blades, which were then retaken by the Forbidden Five.

Rox then alerted the Five to use the tornado to distract the Ninja and all five retreated into Thunderfang's prison. There, Zarkt used the blue Prismatic Blade and Drix hurled the Returning Blade to cut the final prismatic chains. Although Rox then demanded for Thunderfang to fulfill his end of the deal, the dragon revealed he never intended to keep his promise and drained their souls, causing the last two blades to fall from their respective wielders' hands.

The Shatter Dragon[]

As Thunderfang breaks out of his prison, he creates the Winds of Chaos, which causes the Returning Blade to land on the ground, where Arin landed next to it and grabbed it to fight the Dragonian Warriors. Remembering that Thunderfang absorbs souls, Arin uses the blade and finds a lot of souls surrounding the Chaos Dragon. After using the healing elixir, Arin uses the blade again and sees the souls moving on, while Lloyd's soul is returned to his body but the Forbidden Five's souls remained in Thunderfang. Arin took the blade after choosing to leave with Ras.

Human Resources[]

When Mysterium was under attack by the ghost of Kur and Spectral Dragonians, Arin used the Returning Blade to see them. However, the ghosts were impervious to Prismatic Steel, causing the blade to shatter during Arin's attempts to use it. Arin continued to rely on the blade to watch the Dragonians’ incoming attacks until Sora stepped in. She combined a loose shard of the blade with a lantern and enlisted Gandalaria's magic to enhance it, allowing the lantern's light to channel the blade's power and reveal the ghosts.

Casket of Bones[]

In the Land of Lost Things, Fritz and Spitz found the remaining Prismatic Blades from the geysers. The two showed them to Kai, who wondered how they got there because they went missing after their battle with Thunderfang until he realized no one noticed them.

Under the Light of a Mechanical Moon[]

In the Land of Lee, Arin continue using his damaged Returning Blade to spot the Spectral Dragonians led by Zarkt. Sora used her Prismatic lantern to help the Ninja spot the warriors. Elsewhere in the Land of Lost Things, Fritz and Spitz were attacked by Nokt, who drained their souls when they couldn’t fight him off with the Prismatic Blades. Geo used one and when Cole looked through it, they saw several Spectral Dragonians. Cole, Kai, and Frak later took the rest of the Prismatic Blades to find Nokt. When the Ninja arrived at the Spectral Lands, Arin used the damaged Returning Blade to battle the Dragonians until they were forced to retreat to the Spectral Monastery and end up at the City of Temples.

The Vault of Focus[]

When Nokt and his Spectral Dragonians attempted to seize the souls of the Imperians for Thunderfang, Kai, Cole, and Frak wielded three Prismatic Blades in their defense. Unfortunately, these weapons proved ineffective against their foes. Recognizing the potential of the Prismatic Blades, Percival took Kai and Frak to the Advanced Systems Lab, where two of the blades were enhanced to effectively combat Spectral Dragonians. Cole, on the other hand, continued to use his blade to fight Nokt but his reckless action costed him his soul. Armed with their upgraded weapons, Kai and Frak successfully defeated the Spectral Dragonians, compelling Nokt to retreat. Kai threw his Reveal Blade at Nokt's magical flute, which caused it to release most of the souls he stole.

For Whom the Bell Tolls[]

Kai and Frak returned to the Monastery of Spinjitzu, bringing their Reveal Blades with them. As Frak joined Sora and Wyldfyre on their journey to Djinjago, he wore his Reveal Blade on his back.

When Doves Cry[]

Kai and Frak carried their Reveal Blades on their backs as they assisted the ninja in awakening the Arc Dragon of Focus through a spell song.

Chaos Reigns[]

When the Hollow Ones launched attacks on the Caves of Bells, Frak and Kai wielded their Reveal Blades to expose the hidden Spectral Dragonians, engaging in battle against them. As the conflict unfolded in Mysterium, Kai was taken aback by the sheer number of Spectral Dragonians and, in a sense of compassion, wished that the strikes from the Reveal Blades would liberate their souls rather than lead to their permanent destruction.

Meanwhile, in Djinjago, Frak used his Reveal Blade to confront Kur, successfully vanquishing several Spectral Dragonians, while Sora was surprised that the blades were designed by the Imperians. Frak tossed his Reveal Blade to Wyldfyre, who briefly wielded it against the Spectral Dragonians, declaring that she intended to keep it. However, after being defeated by Kur, she lost the blade, allowing Frak to reclaim it. Kai and Frak continued to use the Reveal Blades until they managed to destroy all the Spectral Dragonians in the two caves.

Abilities

Abilities[]

Common[]

  • Spectral Perception/Invisibility Awareness - Being made of Prismatic Steel, the Prismatic Blades allow the user to perceive hidden spiritual energy, such as Soul Suckers in the Spectral Lands, or souls across the Merged Realms.
    • Light Projection - Two of the Prismatic Blades were upgraded into Reveal Blades to project light that could reveal the Spectral Dragonians when they are used in combat.
  • Conditional Indestructibility – As it was made of Prismatic Steel, the Prismatic Blades are difficult to destroy. They can only be destroyed by another item forged from the same material, making them nearly impossible to break by normal means. Currently, Spectral Dragonians have been the only things capable of damaging Prismatic Blades.
    • Fire Resistance - The blue Prismatic Blade demonstrated an incredible resistance to fire.
  • Spectral Destruction - Prismatic Steel is able to harm spectral beings like the Soul Suckers, specifically hitting the nodes on their back to destroy them. After two of the Prismatic Blades were upgraded into Reveal Blades, they gained the ability to destroy Spectral Dragonians.
  • Weapon - Each Prismatic Blade is also capable of being used as a regular weapon.

Unique[]

  • Enhancement - The green Prismatic Blade inside the crab tooth enlarged the crab, and the crab gained extraordinary strength when it grew, and the Blue Prismatic Blade gave life to Dorama's puppet.
    • Animation - The blue Prismatic Blade has the power to animate lifeless objects, as seen with Dorama's puppet, which was brought to life after it was placed inside the puppet.
    • Mind Control - The Green Prismatic Blade gave a crab tooth the ability to control the minds of anyone it desires through the control crown.
    • Size Enhancement - The crab tooth enhanced a crab's size to a monstrous level.
    • Energy Beam Emission - The crab tooth was able to emit energy beams due to the green Prismatic Blade's influence.
      • Optic Beams/Lasers - In addition, Dorama's puppet was able to emit energy beams or lasers from its eyes due to the blue Prismatic Blade's influence.
  • Return - The Returning Blade would return to the user's hand if thrown at a target. The Reveal Blades were shown to return to their user, suggesting this ability is common among the Prismatic Blades.

Trivia

Trivia[]

  • They are the tenth collectible items to have the word "Blade" in their name, the others being the Fangblades, the Elemental Blades, the Techno Blades, the Jadeblades, the Aeroblades, the Djinn Blade, the Departed Blades, the Time Blades, and the Blades of Deliverance.
  • The blades' color scheme matches that of the Arc Dragon of Focus, as the Prismatic Steel reflect the colors blue and purple and the handles of the blades are purple, tan, and gold.
  • They mark the third fully transparent katana piece produced for Ninjago, the first being the crystal katana and the second being an orange katana from 30650 Kai and Rapton's Temple Battle.
  • In the sets, the Prismatic Blades resemble katanas. However, in the show, two of the Prismatic Blades take on a different sword design, one of which is shorter than a standard katana.
  • In real-life, prismatic blades are long, narrow specialized stone flake tools with a sharp edge, like a small razor blade.
  • When asked about why the Prismatic Blades were created, Chris "Doc" Wyatt remarked that creating a lock necessitates a key.[6] This suggests that the inhabitants of the City of Temples were involved in the creation of the Prismatic Blades, just as they were involved in forging the chains that restrained Thunderfang, in case he was ever needed to be freed.[7] Doc Wyatt later clarified that while the first Prismatic Blade was forged by Deg, a Dragonian, he subsequently imparted the skill of prismatic metallurgy to the Order of the Sources, Roby's ancestors.[1]
  • The Prismatic Blades needing their wielders to look at the blade is similar to the Sword of Sanctuary. However while the sword is used to see their opponents next move, the Prismatic Blades allow their users to see invisible opponents.
