After their new ally shares his tragic past with the Ninja, Kai suspects the stoic warrior might be hiding his true allegiance. They cross into the Never Kingdoms and find a familiar sight - and familiar faces. A cryptic warning in the night shakes the Ninja's trust, but they find help with a Formling guide before the Weapon of Desolation can escape containment.

Plot

Plot[]

The flashback begins in the Village of the Tiger Tribe, Mei tries to reassure Zilvar that the tremors affecting their home will pass, citing the predictions of the elders who read stones. Disillusioned by superstition and fearing for the safety of his tribe and future family, Zilvar sets out alone to find a secure home. His dangerous journey takes him through the perilous Lava Wastes where he witnesses the Fire Dragon Tribe and Heatwave in battle and up the cliffs of the Forest of Spirits, where he finally finds a peaceful sanctuary. Zilvar returns to his village full of hope, only to discover it completely swallowed by catastrophic tremors. Blaming himself for not being there to save his people or his beloved Mei, Zilvar carves the names of the lost into a fallen memorial stone and wanders the Wyldness aimlessly. In the present, Nya expresses deep sympathy for Zilvar's loss. Lloyd mentions Ras, suggesting he might be a surviving member of Zilvar’s tribe. Zilvar dismisses this, explaining that "Ras" was never written on the memorial stone and that Ras likely hails from another tribe in the vast Wyldness. The quiet conversation is abruptly broken when Jay notices a burning smell. Kai quickly defends himself, but attention shifts immediately to the containment unit housing the Weapon of Desolation. Zane analyzes the containment unit and warns that its structural integrity is failing as energy leaks out. Cole notes with dread that the weapon behaves as if it is consciously trying to escape. Kai tries to brush off the terrifying thought that the object might actually be sentient. Realizing the imminent danger, Lloyd takes charge and declares that they must transport the Weapon of Desolation to the Abyss of Eternal Night immediately. The Ninja gear up for a dangerous journey to destroy the weapon once and for all before it breaks containment and wreaks destruction upon the realm.

Trivia

Trivia[]

  • Glen Lakin stated this is his favorite episode he has written for the series.[2]
  • This is the second episode where Cole uses his Storm Suit hood with his Draconus Suit.
  • This episode marks the debut of the Monastery of the Never Kingdoms.
  • Formlings are revealed to have gotten their shapeshifting abilities from the first Elemental Master of Form.
  • Akita's wolf form has a different design, and her human form has a strand of grey hair, showing how the time difference that used to exist in the Never Realm has made her older.
  • Sorla is somehow still alive despite that time moves faster in the Never-Realm before the Merge.
  • The Never Kingdoms' barrier pushes out those who have never been to the Never-Realm pre-Merge.
    • It's unknown if the barrier's rules could be bypassed by using the portal gate if all the portal gates were still working for others than only Ras.
  • Akita appears in this episode, but her brother Kataru doesn't.
  • In his "ghost" form, Wu was able to possess Kai to warn the ninja before leaving and going towards the portal gate. It's indicates that not all of Wu's "ghost" orbs were captured by Ras.
    • This scene has Wu's only speaking lines in Dragons Rising Season 4 as a whole.
  • In the beginning flashback, there's a monument to fallen tigers in the Wyldness. Two of the names are Tormak and Tazar, possibly the very same ones from Legends of Chima.
  • Akita's transformation between forms now has a visual effect instead of the smooth transition between forms.
  • Lloyd reunites with Akita and Nya reunites with Sorla, leaving Cole as the only ninja to not reunite with the one they formed the closest connection with in the Never-Realm before the Merge, that being Krag. Krag's fate is unknown.

Continuity[]

  • This episode marks the first appearance of Akita and Sorla since "Awakenings", and is the only episode in this season in which they speak.
  • This episode marks the return of Lloyd's Titan Mech, now rebuilt and sporting the Legacy redesign.
  • Zane recalls his actions as the Ice Emperor in the Ice Chapter of Season 11. However, this is the first time he's acknowledging them on-screen. The first time he does this is his story in Quest for the Lost Powers. He even mentions the Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu that was once his frozen scepter.
    • This continues humanizing his character, as Season 4 Part 1 did before, addressing fans' concerns of Zane's more robotic personality.
    • Lloyd reminds Zane that the Ice Emperor was a separate person. He most likely was referring to the fact that whilst Zane's body did terrible things, it wasn't his mind nor soul.
  • The title refers to the Boreal River, being "a frozen scar on our land", according to Beniro.
  • Jay suggesting that Kai should go first to test the Never Kingdom's border could be a reference to Kai suggesting that Jay go get the part needed for the original Land Bounty from Beohernie. "It should be someone expendable. Like Jay."
  • Kai tells Jay that he heard Master Wu's voice before, referencing when Kai was led to the Monastery of Spinjitzu's portal gate, and when he, Cole and Frak unearthed the remains of the Source Dragon of Balance in "The Screaming Earth."
  • Lloyd references when Arin told him that Master Wu never passed through to the Spectral Lands since "Under the Light of a Mechanical Moon"
  • This episode marks the first time Jay has said Master Wu's name in Ninjago: Dragons Rising and the first time since "Kryptarium Prison Blues", 97 episodes before this one came out.
Errors

Errors[]

  • When Zane says, "Separation failure. We're jammed.", his voice filter is not applied.
    • This is the first time, albeit erroneously, that Zane has spoken without his titanium voice filter in Dragons Rising.
  • When Zane creates an ice flower, there's no frosty air effects. In the next scene, there are.
