Overview
- This article is about the Source Dragon. For other uses, see Balance (disambiguation).
The Source Dragon of Balance was one of the seven Source Dragons. Hence their name, they represented the source of Balance, having served as the foundation for all the Elemental Powers related to their source.
History
History[]
Background[]
The Source Dragon of Balance was among the seven Source Dragons that helped maintain balance across the realms. Each Source Dragon represented a unique source,[5] with the Source Dragon of Balance specifically embodying balance.
The Source Dragons faced a significant dilemma regarding whether to grant the First Spinjitzu Master Elemental Powers to share with mortals. However, the Source Dragon of Balance cast the deciding vote in favor of bestowing these powers. This decision, however, led to Thunderfang, feeling spurned by the council's rejection of his ambition to become a Source Dragon, planning to overthrow the Source Dragons.[6] When Thunderfang attacked the City of Temples, the council decided to send the mortal avatar of the Source Dragon of Focus, the Arc Dragon of Focus to stop the Chaos Dragon. After completing its task, the avatar of the Focus Source Dragon was split into two halves, which were put into a deep slumber.
The First Spinjitzu Master would later implored them to contribute their dragon energy. This request was made in order to create the Dragon Cores, which were meant to prevent the Coalescence,[7] an imminent event where all the realms would merge into a single world, a consequence brought about by the Source Dragon energy.[8]
At some point, a tree in Ninjago became charged with the Source Dragon of Balance's dragon energy and released it in the form of resin that hardened and fossilized into amber, which was eventually extracted by a Metalonian blacksmith and used to create chronosteel and with it, the elemental power of Amber.
At some point before the Merge occurred, the Source Dragon of Balance was killed while in their mortal form.[9][10] Their corpse then eventually ended up buried in a desert in Imperium. Wishing to be unearthed, their still sentient corpse called out to Cole, resulting in the earth screaming. As the MergeQuakes intensified, they warned Cole that time was running out.
Legacy[]
The Motion Dragon told the Ninja of Balance's death, which happened before the Merge.
Years after the Source Dragon of Balance's death, the Source Dragon of Motion alerted the ninja to whoever was responsible for killing three Arc Dragons might soon target the Source Dragons. She recounted that the Source Dragons, despite their revered status, are not as powerful as many might assume when confronted with danger, including the murder of the Source Dragon of Balance. This left the ninja in disbelief, as it was the first time they had heard of such an act against the Source Dragons, despite being aware of the capture of the Source Dragon of Energy.
Cole, Frak, and Kai unearth Balance's living skeleton.
Cole followed Master Wu to where the corpse was. After finding the point where it was the loudest, he tried using his Earth power on it, but to no avail. It was later on unearthed by the combined efforts of Cole and Frak, who used their Elemental Powers of Earth and Quake to unearth the corpse whilst Kai used his Fire to destroy rocks that were preventing the bones from rising out of the ground. It disappeared soon after. Wu's specter form appeared to his students, telling them that the skeleton was lost but now it can be found.
Balance's symbol still remained, but caused friction among the Council of Sources.
After Thunderfang's return and his ambition to become a Source Dragon by collecting souls in the Spectral Lands, the Source Dragons found themselves in a stalemate over whether to engage with him. The Source Dragons of Life and Strength argued that their promise to the First Spinjitzu Master had led to the conflict with Thunderfang. Strength pointed out that he had refused to grant gifts to the First Spinjitzu Master, while the Source Dragon of Motion reminded everyone that their agreement to assist the First Spinjitzu Master stemmed from the favor the Source Dragon of Balance had towards mortals, which had been the deciding factor. With Balance now deceased, the Source Dragons faced a critical choice about whether to confront Thunderfang or not.
After the ninja summoned Thunderfang's eternal enemy and Source Dragon of Focus's personal avatar, the Arc Dragon of Focus, the Council had a fallout, with Focus, Life, and Strength leaving the Council of Sources while Energy, Motion, and Flow continued to stay, but it disrupted the balance of Elemental Powers and their wielders. The remaining members acknowledge that the mortals would ultimately suffer the consequences of their brethren's actions.
At some point after, the monks at the Altar of the Seven Sources explained to the Chief Loyalist that each column represented a Source Dragon's power, noting that the column for Balance was inactive because the Source Dragon of Balance had died. They reassured her that this issue could be resolved when the cycle resets. However, before they could elaborate on what would happen after, the Chief Loyalist interrupted them.[11]

Trivia
Trivia[]
- Their death was hinted at in "The Battle of the Second Monastery" when the Source Dragons' symbols appeared before Lloyd, in which, according to Chris "Doc" Wyatt, was intentional that the Source Dragon of Balance's symbol was absent.[14]
- Their death was also hinted at in "Land of Lost Things," when Cole was able to feel the earth "screaming", and then in "Absolute Power," when Cole left to follow a clue from Master Wu. It turned out that the earth screaming was due to the presence of the remains of the deceased Source Dragon of Balance wanting to be unearthed.
- When a fan inquired about the fate of the Source Dragon of Balance, asking if it traveled through the Spectral Lands after its death, Doc Wyatt responded "How do we know that?",[15] suggesting that the Source Dragon of Balance may not truly be dead. However, he later acknowledged the death of the Source Dragon of Balance when he mistakenly interpreted the open space in Source-Henge as a sign of its absence,[16] and reiterated that there are now six Source Dragons due to Balance's departure.[17]
- Currently, the Source Dragon of Balance is the one with the least confirmed elemental powers connected to their source, with a total of three confirmed.
- Since two of their elements have been confirmed as still being in use (and one had even been transferred to a new master), it's confirmed that their death didn't cause their elemental powers to vanish.
- The Source Dragon of Balance is currently the only known Source Dragon with no known mortal dragons that possess an Element connected to their source.
- When asked the other Source Dragons didn't use their power to revive Balance, Chris "Doc" Wyatt stated "Revive? Not how it works."[18]
- Despite having died before the Merge,[19] the Source Dragon of Balance seems to be connected to the key to understanding it.[20]
- They do not have control over the concept of the Balance, despite their name.[21]
- Many people appear to be unaware of the Source Dragon of Balance's death, as some still refer to their group as if there were still seven Source Dragons, even Ras and Thunderfang who are usually very well-informed about the Source Dragons.
