The Grand Inquisition is the seventh episode of the fourth season of Ninjago: Dragons Rising and the 67th episode overall.

In this full episode, Sora and Frak must unmask the Loyalist in Umbrasylvis to clear their name. Meanwhile, Lloyd confronts his past in the Ritual of Unrooting.[1]

Inside the Temple of the Green Ninja, an unlikely guide helps Lloyd untangle his choices from his destiny.[4]

Plot

The Loyalists managed to escape from the cave, leaving Kai, Nya, and Jay trapped. Jay, eager to pursue the villains, attempted to breach the force field with his Lightning Daggers, but his attack failed. Nya tried using water to blast the shield, but her efforts only resulted in splattering water everywhere, annoying Kai as his hair got wet. Ignoring Kai's warning about standing in a puddle, Jay shot lightning at the barrier, inadvertently electrocuting Kai. Despite the mishap, Kai proposed combining their powers and, following a coordinated attack of fire, Water, and Lightning, they shattered the force field. As they rushed outside, they saw the Loyalists escaping on hover chariots, and an electric bomb was deployed by the Lead Loyalist, disrupting Administration Agents' vehicles with an electromagnetic pulse. Kai noted they wouldn't be able to catch up to the Loyalists on foot, reflecting on his time in the Land of Madness. However, Jay suggested Nya could salvage the fried parts to create a new machine, which she agreed to attempt.

In Umbrasilvis, the Grand Inquisitor imposed a lockdown to find and punish the person who released the Mutation Monster, starting an Inquisition. He started with Sora, who was seen as suspicious because she was an outsider. Sora struggled to explain her situation, which made the crowd turn against her. Frak was questioned about his arrival through the fountain, leading to guilt being implied. Wyldfyre, known for her fighting, challenged the Inquisitor, which made him suspect her chaotic nature was linked to the monster's release. Freya defended Wyldfyre by stating she was with Riyu all night, but when asked about Sora and Frak's whereabouts, the Inquisitor became more suspicious. Reginald testified for his fellow club members, showing a logbook that accounted for everyone in the Expanding Frontier. However, Sora pointed out that the log could have false entries. The Inquisitor dismissed her claims. Reginald admitted Sora and Frak were not in the log and didn't vouch for their, much to Frak's dismay and distress. The court chose to gather more evidence and called for a recess, ordering warning signs to be put around Sora and Frak. He warned that a Thread of Truth woven into the signs would expose any attempts to remove them, resulting in an automatic guilty verdict. As the crowd began to disperse, Frak was disappointed that his own father couldn't defend him. Sora reminded Frak of the Loyalist on the airship, realizing that catching the person could help prove their innocence, and they decided to search the Expanding Frontier for clues.

In the Whispering Wood, Arin and Euphrasia stood helplessly over a dying Acona. Said Acona dissolved entirely into energy, leaving behind a seedling. The other Acona instructed Arin to plant the seedling. Nearby, Zane stood by the weakening Arc Dragon of Life, who confessed that the wood had never degenerated to such a critical point. The dragon despaired that neither it nor the wood could hold on much longer, warning that if the Whispering Wood fell, the Merged Lands would inevitably collapse as well. Zane comforted the Arc Dragon of Life. Touched by the gesture, the dragon remarked on the irony of a being like it comforted by a Nindroid. Zane replied that while he often struggled to communicate his feelings, he still felt them as deeply as anyone else. While Arin and Euphrasia buried the seedling in the ground, the Arc Dragon thanked Zane for staying with it until the very end. Zane refused to accept defeat, urging the dragon to believe in Lloyd, who had survived countless dire situations before. The Arc Dragon dismissed this as false hope, stating that Lloyd was too deeply rooted in his current path to free himself. However, at that exact moment, the planted seedling sprouted into a vibrant shoot. Watching the miracle, Zane pointed out that the Whispering Wood and the Green Ninja were far more resilient than the dragon realized.

Meanwhile, as Lloyd meets Tween Lloyd, he sheepishly asks his skipped variant how long he had maintained his childhood hairstyle. However, Tween Lloyd took the opportunity to tease his older self about his messy hair and insults his absence for a girlfriend. Offended, Lloyd tried to defend himself by mentioning his responsibilities over taking care of the Monastery of Spinjitzu, but Tween Lloyd effortlessly dismisses the excuse and states that he was there to help Lloyd and prepare him for the rest of the Ritual of Unrooting. Although skeptical, Lloyd was caught off-guard when Tween Lloyd knocked him down to the ground before extending a hand to help him up, asking his young adult version if he was prepared for what's next and what's to come.

Sora and Frak were searching through storage crates aboard the airship, with Frak skeptical about finding anything useful. However, when he stumbled upon an orange scale, he claimed it belonged to his father, suggesting he was the Loyalist. Sora challenged Frak's accusation, recalling his earlier defense of his father, but Frak argued that his father's refusal to support him in court indicated guilt. Although Sora pointed out that the scale could have been shed at any time, they pressed on, with Frak remembering seeing the Loyalist after hearing Rowan's scream. Reaching a dead end in the hallway, Sora noticed new wall material and discovered a secret latch leading to a hidden room. Inside, they found an Imperium console, which Sora identified as an old model from the Advanced Systems Lab. Frak expressed disbelief at how his father could have acquired it, while Sora speculated it might be stolen—a trait Frak bitterly noted fit his father's "exploring" lifestyle. Analyzing the console, Sora revealed it was tracking the Mutation Monster's energy signature to locate a source in the village. This led to the conclusion that the Loyalist needed the monster to gather energy data. After boosting the tablet's processing power, Sora pinpointed the target's coordinates and determined that to capture the villain, they would need to allow them to find the object and ambush them at the location.

Afterwards, Lloyd and Tween Lloyd walk towards a large tree with giant mushrooms. Tween Lloyd easily scales upwards, but when Lloyd attempted to do so, the mushroom broke, causing him to pummel down. Tween Lloyd then tells him that he needed to find a different way up since he symbolized a path Lloyd didn't take. Advancing further, Tween Lloyd challenges Lloyd to think about the true source of his power, to which Lloyd remembers, that his strength came from not only himself alone, but from his friends, his family, and community. This revelation transformed an ancient scroll into the Green Ninja Prophecy, as Tween Lloyd teaches Lloyd that, as the Elemental Master of Life, his greatest power is the "connection" between all living things, and that his True Potential could only be unlocked through those connections.

Sora and Frak reached the Tree of Burdens, where Frak was struck by its somber beauty. Sora shared that locals tied ribbons to the tree to express their burdens. Frak opened up about his complicated relationship with his father, feeling pressured to be perfect yet always falling short. As they conversed, they heard footsteps and quickly hid as the Loyalist approached. Frak was ready to fight, but Sora suggested they observe instead. The Loyalist picked up the red fragment of the Weapon of Desolation from the tree, which ignited Frak's anger, leading him to reveal himself and confront the Loyalist, whom he called his father. The Loyalist fled, firing an Imperium Sword, but Reginald tackled him, surprising Frak. Reginald then unmasked the Loyalist, who was revealed to be Johnny Courageous. Sora recognized Johnny as an Imperian, to which Johnny accused her of contributing to Imperium's downfall and declared his loyalty to Beatrix, shocking Sora. Frak picked up the fragment, causing his elemental powers to surge. Johnny tried to escape, but Sora restrained him with the Imperium Sword. Reginald intervened, wrapping the fragment in a handkerchief, citing his experience with cursed relics. Sora requested the fragment to clear their names, and Reginald reluctantly agreed. Frak thanked Reginald but confronted him about his absence, expressing frustration over Reginald's focus on legacy instead of being a father. Reginald explained his struggles, wishing to be a father, Frak could be proud of, but Frak coldly dismissed him, leaving Reginald filled with regret as he and Sora take Johnny away.

Elsewhere, Lloyd inquired Tween Lloyd of why exactly the Temple of the Green Ninja had revealed his skipped age, given that he had accepted his rapid aging from the Tomorrow's Tea as another part of his destiny. Tween Lloyd clarifies this part by revealing the Ritual of Unrooting also requires Lloyd to grasp all connections to other beings, including other versions of himself, like his past, present, and future selves, urging Lloyd to remember that lesson for what lays ahead. When Lloyd realized the trials were not yet finished, Tween Lloyd explained that everything so far was merely just to give him a fighting chance. He then conjures up a large archway and instructs Lloyd to reflect on his past while preparing for the future, cautioning him that his "greatest enemy" awaited him on the other side, an adversary he had only temporarily overcome. Tween Lloyd then emphasizes that defeating this enemy was essential for Lloyd to fully access the pathways of the Whispering Wood and realize his true potential as the Legendary Green Ninja. As Tween Lloyd begins to depart, Lloyd hesitated to ask him if his younger self was "happy", to which Tween Lloyd encourages his older self to find the answer himself before vanishing, leaving Lloyd alone to ponder.

The Grand Inquisitor called the court back to order, ready to declare Frak and Sora guilty in their absence. Just as he was about to announce their fate, Sora, Frak, Wyldfyre, and Riyu entered the square, dragging Johnny Courageous with them. Sora accused Johnny of being the real offender and dropped the fragment of the Weapon of Desolation, shocking the crowd with the revelation that Johnny had desecrated the Tree of Burdens. The Grand Inquisitor quickly changed his ruling, finding Johnny guilty and exonerating Sora and Frak, while also lifting the town's lockdown and ending the inquisition. However, he picked up the weapon fragment, indicating that it needed to be delivered to Beatrix, and disclosed that he had been undercover with the Loyalists for months. In a sudden turn, Johnny activated a button on the Inquisitor's staff, releasing thick smoke into the square. Although Sora used her Spinjitzu to clear the air, the two Loyalists had already escaped on the Expanding Frontier.
