Source Dragons

Overview

“We have existed since before time had a name. We are the source of all Elemental Power in this universe. We hold together the very fabric of reality.”

The Source Dragons (also simply referred as the Sources) are a mysterious group of immensely powerful cosmic dragons that exist beyond the mortal plane, functioning as a council. They all possess godlike abilities to interact with the Realms of Creation, maintaining equilibrium by using their life force. They embody abstract concepts that are fundamental to the universe, and are the source of all Elemental Powers in existence.

There used to be seven Source Dragons until one of them was killed before the Merge by unknown circumstances.

Following Thunderfang's second defeat at the hands of the Arc Dragon of Focus, who was summoned by the ninja, the Source Dragons of Strength, Life and Focus withdrew themselves from the council, consequently causing complications for mortals regarding their Elemental Powers.

History

History[]

Background[]

Being the source of all elemental power, they predate Firstbourne[1] and the First Realm itself,[2] having existed for an extremely long time. At some point in the past, the First Spinjitzu Master sought the assistance of the Source Dragons, requesting a portion of their potent energy. Their energy was harnessed to forge three Dragon Cores, instrumental in maintaining the separation between realms. Working as a council, the Source Dragons debated whether to assist the First Spinjitzu Master, and the decision was contentious until the Source Dragon of Balance, who favored mortals, cast the deciding vote in favor of providing help. This first interaction with mortals led to conflict with Thunderfang,[3] who, after the War of Oni and Dragon, sought to become the Source Dragon of Chaos. However, the Source Dragons consistently denied his ambitions for divinity, deeming him unworthy. Frustrated by their refusals, Thunderfang turned his ambitions toward vengeance, plotting to usurp the Source Dragons collecting enough souls to gain power,[4] including theirs.[5] Ultimately, the vengeful dragon's quest for retribution was thwarted when the Source Dragons summoned their champion, the Arc Dragon of Focus, who imprisoned him in the depths of the First Realm after he attacked the City of Temples.[4][6]

In the passage of centuries, the Source Dragon of Balance was killed while some point after, the Imperians, under the influence of Ras, managed to apprehend the Source Dragon of Energy thanks to their technology and the Icon of the Source Dragon of Energy. Driven by their desire to seize dominion over the realms, Imperium aimed to capture the remaining Source Dragons.[7][8]

Dragons Rising, Season 1[]

During the dragons' escape from Imperium, Lloyd and Zane discovered the Source Dragon of Energy being held captive to power the entire Kingdom of Imperium. They tried to free him, but the Source Dragon forbid them, as doing so now would put the Merged Realms at risk. To let the other dragons escape, the captive Source Dragon offered Lloyd to let him transfer some of his dragon power to the Green Ninja, allowing him to activate the portal gate. After stopping the merge storm with the Dragon Cores, Lloyd goes back to Imperium and uses all three cores to free the captive Source Dragon. After being freed, the dragon seemingly disappears into thin air.

Dragons Rising, Season 2[]

Following his release, the Source Dragon of Energy informed the other Source Dragons of his newfound freedom at the hands of Lloyd. Seeking guidance in the ninja's quest to counter Shatterspin, Lloyd requested a vision from the Source Dragons. In response, the Source Dragons summoned him to their void. However, their opinions of Lloyd varied. The Source Dragon of Life acknowledged Lloyd as an Elemental Master of Energy. On the other hand, the Source Dragons of Motion and Strength held a more skeptical view of Lloyd. The former sensed a potential threat emanating from him, while the latter dismissed him as insignificant. Despite the mixed opinions, the Source Dragon of Energy recounted Lloyd's crucial role as a conduit for his life force, underscoring his significance. He emphasized Lloyd's uniqueness as a mortal and his plea for assistance. Realizing the debt owed to Lloyd for his role in freeing the Source Dragon of Energy, the Source Dragon of Motion ultimately relented. In a gesture of support, she granted Lloyd a vision of Egalt and his domain, hinting that the Dragon Masters could aid the ninja in his mission.

After the murder of three Arc Dragons, the Source Dragon of Motion became aware of the tragedy through her connection with the fallen dragons, shared with the Life Source Dragon. Understanding the strong bond between Lloyd and the Source Dragons, she felt compelled to warn him about the threat posed by the killers and seek justice for the slain dragons. Worried about the increasing danger to the Source Dragons, she listened as Lloyd mentioned the map the late Matriarch of the Mountain Dragons had carried. The Motion Source Dragon immediately recognized it as a map to the City of Temples. She explained that the Tournament of the Sources was crucial, and Lloyd’s participation was key to uncovering the identity of the killers and seeking justice.

After the Tournament ended, the Source Dragon of Motion appeared before Lloyd. He felt he had failed, expressing regret for not meeting her expectations. But she reassured him that the real purpose of the Tournament was to reveal the identity of the killers—the Forbidden Five. Though the Forbidden Five had escaped, she praised Lloyd for uncovering their names and preventing Ras from reaching the Source Dragons. The Motion Source Dragon reminded the Green Ninja that though the killers were still at large, their plans had been set back, and he had protected the Source Dragons. She encouraged Lloyd not to doubt himself, pointing out that while Sora won the Tournament, he had proven himself worthy of the Source Dragons' gifts. Because of this, the Source Dragons now owed him a debt—a debt they would honor. To mark their bond, she gave him a Dragon Icon made from her scale and told him to call upon her through it in one singular time of true need. With that, she left, leaving Lloyd with her promise of help whenever he required it.

Dragons Rising, Season 3[]

While imprisoned by Lee, the Source Dragon of Energy summoned Lloyd to the council's assembly in secret, where they were discussing if they should or not intervene to stop Thunderfang by reawakening the Arc Dragon of Focus. Because they had lost one of their own, the Source Dragon of Balance, the one that made the final vote during an impasse to help the First Spinjitzu Master, they simply couldn't come into an agreement. After the Source Dragon of Strength noticed Lloyd's presence, the connection was cut. However, through that, Lloyd came to learn that even in death, Thunderfang was still a threat.

After the Ninja realized what Thunderfang is doing, they went to the City of Temples to find a way to defeat the Shatter Dragon once and for all. Former Minister of Ledgering Bleckt took the ninja to the Vault of Focus, where Lloyd told him that the Source Dragons were in a deadlock on summoning the Arc Dragon of Focus. Bleckt showed them a way to summon the Arc Dragon, though it would make them an enemy of the Source Dragons.

After reaching the Caves of Bells in Djinjago and Mysterium, the ninja successfully awakened and summoned the Arc Dragon of Focus and, with the combined efforts of Arin and Lloyd controlling the dragons, defeated Thunderfang, which greatly angered the Source Dragons of Strength, Life, and Focus. Consequently, the Source Dragons who preferred to stay out of mortal affairs decided to withdraw from the Council of Sources, leaving only the Source Dragons of Motion, Flow, and Energy remaining. This shift greatly disrupted the balance of the Elemental Powers and their wielders. The remaining council members recognized that the mortals would ultimately suffer the consequences of their brethren's actions.

Abilities

Abilities[]

“Source Dragons experience time differently than the rest of us. They can see what came before, and the things that might come to be.”
  • Transcendent Dragon Physiology - The Source Dragons are dragons of godlike power that exist beyond concepts like Time, Space, Reality, and Dimensionality unless they take their mortal forms,[9] and are comparable to Greek gods in terms of power and abilities.[9]
    • Draco-Ergokinesis - Like other powerful dragons such as Arc Dragons, Thunderfang, and Riyu, Source Dragons are capable of manipulating their dragon energy.
      • Draco-Ergokinetic Breath - Source Dragons can throw their respective source energy from their mouths.[10]
      • Sparks - Like other powerful dragons, such as the Arc Dragons[11] and Riyu, Source Dragons can bestow dragon energy upon Elemental Masters. This allows recipients to tap into powers usually exclusive to dragons using dragon energy. However, in contrast to regular dragons, when a Source Dragon shares its energy with an Elemental Master, they serves as a conduit for that Source Dragon and their energy.
        • Elemental Power Augmentation - By sharing their dragon energy with Elemental Masters, they can increase the strength of Elemental Powers.
        • Draco-Ergokinesis Bestowal - Conduits gain the power to manipulate the dragon energy of their Source Dragon and others.
          • Precognition Bestowal - Conduits can receive visions of the future.
      • Nigh-omnipotence Source dragons are the most powerful creatures in the realms. They exert near-total control over reality.
        • Dimensiokinesis/Realmkinesis - Source Dragons hold a position of significant power and influence over dimensions and realms. They are intricately linked to the Merge, an event that unified all realms, and their power within the Dragon Cores was what prevented this merging during the First Spinjitzu Master's time. In "The Battle of the Second Monastery," it was suggested that capturing a Source Dragon could have resulted in the realms' destruction if it hadn't been confined in a sphere limiting its powers.
          • Dimension/Realm splitting - According to Ras, the combined power of all seven Source Dragons could reverse the Merge.[12][13]
          • Dimensional Travel - The Source Dragons, like other dragons, can travel between dimensions and can bring living beings with them.
          • Dimension/Realm Creation - They are capable of creating dimensions and realms.
          • Dimension/Realm Destruction - They are also capable of destroying entire dimensions and realms.
            • Omnicide - Destruction of a realm would result in the death of all life in it.
          • Dimensional Rift Creation - As demonstrated by the Dragon Cores, objects wrought from pure condensed Source Dragon energy, the Source Dragons are capable of tearing rifts in the fabric of reality, exposing the Ethereal Divide.
            • Vacuum Effect - Such rifts are identical to MergeQuakes and have a vacuum effect that sucks nearby objects or people in.
        • Omnificence According to Ras, the combined power of all seven Source Dragons can create anything.[14][15]
          • Elemental Power Creation/Linkage - By embodying their sources, the Source Dragons serve as the foundation for various Elemental Powers, with their energy being integral to their respective source. They are connected to the elements they had created, as well as to those developed by others with the use of a specific Source Dragon's energy.[16] They also depend on each other to maintain the balance of Elemental Powers, otherwise it would weakened the Elemental Masters' connection to their powers and cause them to become unstable.[17]
            • Elementokinesis - Source Dragons can use the Elemental Powers that are derived from their Source.[18][19]
              • Elemental Powers Bestowal - Source Dragons can bestow their Elemental Powers to others.
                • Potentikinesis Bestowal - As Golden Power is derived from all their sources, all the Source Dragons can bestow it to others.
          • Draco-Telumgenesis - Source Dragons can create Source Dragon Icons, weapons which contain their dragon energy and can be used to summon them.
        • Nigh-Invincibility - The Source Dragons are described to be almost impervious in terms of power.
        • Telepathy - Similar to few other dragons, Source Dragons possess the ability to communicate with other beings by using telepathic powers.
        • Nigh-omniscience - Source dragons know and are aware of almost everything that happens in the realms. They are also able to perceive time.
          • Retrocognition - Source Dragons are capable of viewing and perceiving the past.
          • Precognition - Source Dragons are capable of viewing and perceiving the future.
        • Shapeshifting - Source Dragons can manifest themselves in different mortal forms.[20]
          • Megethoskinesis - Source Dragons can change the size of their mortal form at their own will.
        • Concept Embodiment - Each Source Dragon represents and embodies a concept, such as balance, energy, flow, focus, life, motion, and strength.
          • Dragon Embodiment - The Source Dragons all embody dragons and are linked to mortal dragons somehow.
          • Avatar Manipulation - Each Source Dragons have control over their mortal avatars.
        • Functional Immortality - The Source Dragons cannot be killed in their symbolic forms.
    • Pyrokinetic Breath - Source Dragons can shoot streams of fire from their mouths in their mortal forms.
    • Flight - Source Dragons can fly in their mortal forms by flapping their wings.
Weaknesses

Weaknesses[]

“But you're a Source Dragon. You're more powerful than anything!”
“I wish that were always true, but as you know, one of our kind was recently captured and contained by mortals with evil intent. And before that, the unthinkable happened. A Source Dragon's very life was extinguished.”
Wyldfyre and the Source Dragon of Motion, "The Shape of Motion"
  • Mortal Form - While immortal and near invincible in their symbolic forms, Source Dragons can still be harmed or even killed in their mortal forms.[21]
  • Glass core - The glass core could keep a Source Dragon trapped inside it, neutralizing most of said Source Dragon’s powers as well as drain its dragon energy.
  • Source Dragon Icons - Source Dragon Icons have the ability to forcefully summon Source Dragons to the Realms of Creation.

Trivia

Trivia[]

  • In "TEAM MECH OR TEAM DRAGON?!," it was suggested that the Source Dragons are made out of source energy.
  • When a Source Dragon takes on a mortal form, this means they (or a part of them) are fully present within a mortal body. This is not to be confused with their mortal avatar, which is a distinct form. An example includes Source Dragons when they descend to the mortal plane, as they're in the mortal plane with mortal bodies.
    • Source Dragons have to take a mortal form when communicating with mortals.[57]
  • The Crowns of Horns/symbols of six of the seven Source Dragons are renowned for being based on the Elemental Powers used by the six original ninja, who each has the symbol of the Source Dragon associated with their respective element on most of their Dragons Rising suits. This is because each of their elemental powers take their sources from one of the six Source Dragons.[58]
    • However, these symbols do not strictly represent the Elemental Powers.[59] They actually correspond to a concept specific to each Source Dragon.
    • The Source Dragon of Balance stands out from their peers by being the only one not associated with any of the original 6 ninja's Elemental Powers though he may be seen as being associated with Wu.
  • According to Kevin Burke, the reason the Matriarch of the Mountain Dragons was pictured in a scroll that mentioned Source Dragons is because the drawing is just a representation of one since Source Dragons were believed to be myths and few have barely seen a Source Dragon. This is similar to depictions of gods from mythology.[60]
    • One of the interpreted depictions of the Source Dragons is them as a seven-headed dragon.[61]
  • Source Dragons are the object of a religious worship by a certain community if monks.
  • Before the reveal of the sources, writer Glen Lakin gave possible derivations for several elements through his Bluesky:
    • He implied Wind could come from the Source Dragon of Flow, stating, "Wouldn't it be ironic if someone who was raised under a rigid belief system found their power going with the flow?".[62]
    • Lakin stated among the elements Heat, Light, and Sound, two are derived from the Source Dragon of Energy with the other being derived from another Source Dragon.[63] When asked a similar question with Quake and Heat being the options, he gave the same answer.[64]
      • His reiteration when asked whether Heat and Quake are from the Energy Source somewhat implies that Heat is from the Source Dragon of Energy.
    • Glen Lakin implied that Propulsion comes from either Strength or Motion stating, "maybe it does! [referring to Motion] But maybe propulsion is caused by the strength of its thrust..."[65]
      • He also implied Fusion comes from Strength as well.[66]
    • He suggested that Amber comes from either Life or Energy, with Life being a possibility since the dragon energy that created Amber came from a tree.[67]
    • When asked could if he could give a hint to what source Figment was derived from, Glen Lakin gave the hint "Let me think on it."[68][69] This implies that Figment is from Focus.
    • Glen Lakin suggested that Reflex could be derived from Motion due to its speed and the way its animated. However, he stated it could be from Focus as the user is in a state of constant awareness. he also suggested Reflex could be from Flow, due to it being used to redirect incoming energy.[70][71]
    • He originally stated that Form and Size are from the same Source Dragon,[72] but then later corrected that they are from two different Source Dragons.[73]
    • When asked if he could give a hint to what source Gravity was derived from, Glen Lakin gave the hint, "Gravity is the PULL of one object on another."[74] This implies that Gravity is from Strength.
  • LEGO.com alluded to Riyu being a Source Dragon or possessing similar powers, despite coming from a herd of normal dragons.[75]
  • The seven Source Dragons are likely the most powerful beings shown thus far in the show, capable of destroying entire realms. Thus far, only the First Spinjitzu Master, Thunderfang and the Overlord are capable of potentially surpassing them in power:
    • The First Spinjitzu Master is said by Chris "Doc" Wyatt to potentially be capable of winning a fight against one of the Source Dragons, but not powerful enough to defeat all of the Source Dragons at once.[76]
    • The Overlord could overpower a Source Dragon under the right conditions, though it would be difficult for him to do so.[77]
      • When asked how powerful the Overlord would be if he possessed a Source Dragon, Chris "Doc" Wyatt stated "Very".[78]
      • Some of the Sources consider the Overlord to be a threat.[79]
      • It's possible that the Overlord at one point attempted to dominate the Source Dragons.[80]
    • When asked for a ranking on which source is the most powerful/important of the source dragons, Glen Lakin replied "I don't think the council would have lasted longer than a cycle if there was a great power differential between them. I'm sure each Source Dragon believes themself to be the most powerful. What is life without strength to protect it or focus to understand the world around it?".[81]
  • The Source Dragons exist beyond the Ethereal divide and can manipulate it to their liking.[82]
  • When asked "if the world stives for balance is there a opposite of the Source Dragons" Chris "Doc" Wyatt responded with "No comment".[83]
  • The relationship between the Oni and the Source Dragons and whether or not their power over Destruction come from them is currently unknown.
    • When asked whether there is a possibility of a Source Oni, Chris "Doc" Wyatt responded with, "Anything's possible."[84] When later asked whether Source Oni exist, Chris "Doc" Wyatt responded with, "No spoilers."[85]
  • When asked "If a Source Dragon die, can someone replace him (and his elements)?" Chris "Doc" Wyatt stated "No comment".[86]
  • The Source Dragons did not participate in the War of Oni and Dragon.[87]
  • Despite the event being designed to honor them, the Source Dragons generally aren't interested in what occurs in the Tournament of the Sources.[88]
  • The Source Dragons are the oldest known characters in the series, having existed for an extremely long time.
  • Source Dragons can have multiple Conduits.[89]
  • The death of one of the Source Dragons was hinted at "The Battle of the Second Monastery" when the Source Dragon symbols appeared before Lloyd, in which, according to Chris "Doc" Wyatt, was intentional that the seventh Source Dragon symbol was absent.[90]
  • When asked how the seven Source Dragons came into being, Chris "Doc" Wyatt replied that no one can answer that.[91]
    • He gave a similar answer when asked "Were the Source Dragons always been 7, or can they be increased and decreased?".[92]
      • He would later state that there have always been exactly 7 Source Dragons prior to the Death of the Source Dragon of Balance [93]
  • When asked if the Source Dragons created the realms, Chris "Doc" Wyatt replied "Sort of".[94]
    • According to Chris "Doc" Wyatt, the Source Dragons could potentially create a whole new 17 realms and keep it away from merged lands.[95]
  • According to Kevin Burke, Source Dragons cannot choose to give or take Elemental powers from specific individuals, but can choose to share with either all or no mortals.[96]
  • When asked if the Source Dragons have a limit to how much power they possess, Chris "Doc" Wyatt stated "Working together, no real limit."[9]
  • Some trees have special connections to source dragon energy, which the series will address in the future.[97]
    • One of these trees is the ancient tree from Amber Spiral from which the elemental power Amber takes its origin.[97]
  • The Source Dragons on some occasions can take other mortal forms besides of a dragon.[98]
  • When asked if each Source dragon has an equivalent of Lloyd's power, Chris "Doc" Wyatt replied "Uh. Hmmm. Basically, yes."[99]
  • While the Source Dragons embody the concepts they symbolize, they do not possess control over it. For example, while the Source Dragon of Motion embodies motion, she cannot control the movement of the universe.[98][100]
  • When asked how Darkness is connected to the Source Dragons, Chris Doc Wyatt stated, "Only indirectly".[101]
    • However, when he was asked this question again on, he stated “not from the sources.”[102]
  • The Source Dragons spend their free time communing with creation.[103]
  • When asked if Source Dragons could fall in love, Glen Lakin replied "If they could, that's a show thing not a post thing. (But you've certainly seen them have emotions and express opinions.)"[104]
  • The Source Dragons are occasionally identified by their sources rather than by their individual names.[105] This is similar to how the Elemental Alliance is commonly referred to by their respective elements instead of their personal names in "Lost in Time."
  • Source Dragons cannot create new Elemental Powers whenever they want.[106]
  • When asked if the death of a Source Dragon would mean all Elemental Masters of their source lose their powers, Chris "Doc" Wyatt replied "Interesting question. Remember that you asked that."[107]
    • When asked this question again at the onset of Dragons Rising season 3 part 2, Chris "Doc" Wyatt replied "Let's find out."[108]
      • Glen Lakin would later confirm that Amber, Balance and Shadow are from the Source Dragon of Balance, confirming the death of a source dragon wouldn't cause their elemental powers to vanish.
      • As seen at the end of "Chaos Reigns", despite the fact that the Source Dragons of Strength, Focus and Life removed themselves from the council and mortal affairs, Lloyd (whose power is connected to Life) still has his power, even if now being unstable. This would mean that, for elemental powers to be cut off, the majority of the council must agree to that and, in doing so, they must remove all elemental powers from mortal use.
      • It would appear that the potency and control the Elemental Masters have of their powers also depends on the state of the Council of Sources. With the removal of the Source Dragons of Strength, Focus and Life and the death of the Source Dragon of Balance, Elemental Masters were able to feel their powers weakening and become more unstable.
  • Of the seven concepts represented by the Source Dragons, three have been the subject of banners in Ninjago: Core: the Balance banner, the Strength banner, and the Focus banner.
  • When asked "objectively, based on the Elements they have under their roster, would you say there's a Source that has more weight/a higher power scale than the other 6?", Glen Lakin replied "I wouldn't say that's an objective question. I'm sure all the Source Dragons believe they have the best Elemental Powers. If you want my OPINION, I think a team of all Elemental Masters under Flow would be pretty versatile and formidable."[109]
  • When asked "if the Source Dragons were to pull the off switch on elemental powers, would that include powers trapped inside of weapons such as the Time Blades?", Chris "Doc" Wyatt replied "Tricky question. Source Dragons can cut off their energy BUT there are certain locations AND items that can act as reservoirs of SD energy (think: batteries). Tapping into these items would supply a Master with Elemental Powers even if no fresh energy were flowing from the Source Dragons... until that reservoir is empty."[110]
  • While Source Dragons have been introduced since "The Merge: Part 2," not all their names have been mentioned in the show itself (excluding the credits): Motion and Life were first mentioned in "The Shape of Motion," Energy and Strength in "Fallen Wishes," Balance in "Casket of Bones," and Focus in "The Vault of Focus."
  • According to Chris "Doc" Wyatt, the Source Dragons symbolic forms aren’t meant to be taken as actual forms, but are meant to be visual representations of them in a non-physical plane of existence.[111]
  • When asked if all Source Dragons are non-binary or only just the Source Dragon of Life, Chris "Doc" Wyatt" replied with, "Not all."[112]
  • Not every Source Dragon has a mortal avatar.[113]
  • The Source Dragons experience time differently, but are still prone to being shortsighted or miss important occurrences.[114]
